Chris Hadfield - Lessons From An Astronaut - Part 1 of 2. An engineer and former Royal Canadian Air Force fighter pilot, Chris Hadfield has flown two space shuttle missions and served as commander of the International Space Station. Chris, who was raised on a farm in southern Ontario, was inspired as a child when he watched the Apollo 11 Moon landing on TV. He attended high school in Oakville and Milton and earned his glider pilot licence as a member of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces and earned an engineering degree at Royal Military College. While in the military he learned to fly various types of aircraft and eventually became a test pilot and flew several experimental planes. As part of an exchange program with the United States Navy and United States Air Force, he obtained a master's degree in aviation systems at the University of Tennessee Space Institute. In 1992, he was accepted into the Canadian astronaut program by the Canadian Space Agency. He first flew in space aboard STS-74 in November 1995 as a mission specialist. During the mission he visited the Russian space station Mir. In April 2001 he flew again on STS-100 and visited the International Space Station (ISS), where he walked in space and helped to install the Canadarm2. In December 2012 he flew for a third time aboard Soyuz TMA-07M and joined Expedition 34 on the ISS. He was a member of this expedition until March 2013 when he became the commander of the ISS as part of Expedition 35. He was responsible for a crew of five astronauts and helped to run dozens of scientific experiments dealing with the impact of low gravity on human biology. During the mission he also gained popularity by chronicling life aboard the space station and taking pictures of the earth and posting them through Twitter, Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr to a large following of people around the world. He was a guest on television news and talk shows and gained popularity by playing the International Space Station's guitar in space. His mission ended in May 2013 when he returned to earth. When we lose a great artist, we lose part of ourselves. Only weeks before the passing of this creative genius, I was fortunate enough to sit down with astronaut Chris Hadfield, who is famous for covering the legendary Bowie song Space Oddity in space. In this clip you hear Chris talk about the visionary power of David Bowie. Space Oddity was written before human beings had landed on the moon, but Bowie's eerily accurate song captures the thrill and the loneliness of what it must be like to look down upon planet earth from the heavens. Chris talks about how just singing the song in a different environment opened up new resonances for him, made him think about himself and his job in a completely different way. When you watch the video Chris made in space, you get a real insight into what it must be like to be confronted by your own insignificance in the vastness of space, to be part of something much bigger than yourself. Chris told me that the power of the song brought out the human element of space travel, and opened people's minds to the fact that life in a space station is more than just a dry, lonely, scientific process. As well as being a consummate scientist, Chris Hadfield also has the heart of a poet, and the sensitivity of the way he sang Bowie's song seem to update it for modern audiences. The works of great artists outlast them, and listening to this version of Bowie's song after hearing the tragic news of his death, reminds me that songs like Space Oddity are a gift to us all. Chris told me that the power of poetry is how you relate to the words, your interpretation of what is being said. And that's what he tried to convey in the cover. David Bowie created countless works of art that were not only visionary and prophetic, but which opened up ways for us to express what we might never have expressed otherwise. Bowie's influences were far reaching, and he was a master of the creative intersection, fusing rock and roll with theatre, opera, space technology, literature - you name it. The very fact that a real-world astronaut discovered more about himself through one of Bowie's songs shows that the man's music will last the ages. RIP David Bowie, and thank you Commander Hadfield.

In 2007, James was recovering from a serious motorcycle accident that left him with broken legs and a severely broken and dislocated ankle. The prognosis was that he was likely to suffer a permanent walking impairment and would certainly not be able to continue the active physical lifestyle he had enjoyed up to that point. James decided to respond to this challenge in the only way he knew how, and with dogged determination, set about physical tasks that most of us can only imagine experiencing. In 2010, James rowed single-handed across the Atlantic Ocean. In 2011, he reached the summit of Mount Everest. In 2013, James embarked on an 18,000 mile unsupported global cycle, through 20 countries and cycling on average 100 miles a day. The key message that James reveals from completing this "ultimate triathlon" is that we can all potentially set ourselves difficult goals and achieve them: the capability to succeed is within everyone. James is now extending his involvement with schools and other organisations through a planned programme of motivational talks and interactive engagements. His practical and pragmatic lessons include the importance of interim goals, breaking the task down into small, achievable steps, each one of which increases the commitment to the overall goal; the need for self-belief; the willingness of others to help if only you dare to ask and finally, the value of persistence. James is also one of Hampshire's Scouting Ambassadors, the role of whom is to raise the profile of scouting in a positive manner. There are 22,000 scouts in Hampshire with a further 5,000 waiting to become scouts, subject to more volunteers becoming available. James is supporting and raising awareness for a wonderful children's charity The ELIFAR Foundation, which aims to help improve the quality of life mainly of profoundly disabled children and young adults.
