The Padres scored a quick run on 2 hits against Shohei Ohtani, making his pitching debut in a start for the Dodgers, but the worldwide megastar quickly made up for it with a pair of clutch hits and a 2 runs driven in to lead the Dodgers to a 6-3 win over the Padres in LA. The 2-way superstar threw 28 pitches in the first inning, 21 months after right elbow surgery. It was his 1st outing since August 2023 with the Anaheim Angels of Nowhere. Manny Machado drove in Fernando Tatis, Jr., with a sacrifice fly against Ohtani to drive in the Padres’ 1st run. Luis Arraez had singled Tatis over to 3rd after Fernando led off the game with a bloop single to center. Ohtani ripped an RBI double to the wall in left-center with 2 outs in the 3rd to tie the score at 1. He added a run-scoring single with 2 outs I the Dodgers' 5-run 4th, when they took a 6-2 lead. Ben Casparius (5-1) got the win, working 3 2/3 innings of relief. Kirby Yates pitched a perfect 9th for his 2nd save against his former team. Padres’ starter Dylan Cease (2-6) struck out 5 straight hitters- including Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman- in the 1st inning. Cease struck out 9 Dodgers, but he gave up 6 runs on 8 hits in just 5 innings. San Diego took a 2-1 lead on Xander Bogaerts’ RBI double in the 4th. Manny Machado had 3 hits and drove in 5 runs, Luis Arraez had 3 hits and scored 4 times, Dylan Cease struck out 11 Dodgers, while allowing only 3 hits in 7 shutout innings, and the Padres smoked the Dodgers off the field in an 11-1 statement win at Petco Park. After losing the series opener by a run in extra innings, the Padres took no chances in this one. They jumped on the Dodgers in the 3rd inning, scoring 3 times with the superstars leading the way. Fernando Tatís Junior led off with a walk, and scored on a double ripped to right field by Arraez. Machado then singled in Arraez, and Jackson Merrill tripled down the right field line to score Machado. The Padres added a run in the 4th, one in the 5th, and 4 more in the 6th on a home run by Martin Maldonado, who drove in 2 runs, and a 2-run single off the bat of Xander Bogaerts. San Diego went up 11-0 in the seventh on Machado's two-run single. Michael Conforto’s RBI single put the Dodgers on the board in the 8th. It was easily the best outing of the season for Cease, the dominant righty who finished 4th in Cy Young voting a year ago. This season has been a bit different, as he hadn’t won in his last 11 starts. Ceade has been prone to giving up the big inning, but tonight he escaped a bases-loaded jam in the 3rd and another harrowing inning in the 5th with inning-ending strikeouts. The Dodgers have 14 pitchers on the injured list, so Matt Sauer (1-1, just up from the minors) got the start. Sauer struggled, throwing 111 pitches while giving up 9 runs on 13 hits. Utilityman Kiké Hernández pitched the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing 3 hits and an earned run while throwing no pitch faster than 57 mph. Manny Machado went 4-4, including a 2-run game-tying single with 2 outs in the 9th inning, and Jake Cronenworth knocked in the go-ahead run in the 10th as the Padres stole a big game from the Giants by the score of 3-2. Just a day after the Padres won the series opener 1-0 in 10 innings, the Pads & Giants went to extras again. This time the Padres had to beat Giants’ closer Camilo Duval in the 9th inning to get it done, and that’s exactly what they did. Fernando Tatis, Jr. and Luis Arraez drew back-to-back walks with two outs, loading the bases for Machado, who also walked, reaching base all 5 times he came to the plate. Machado made a huge defensive play in the 3rd inning, cutting down Willy Adames at the plate with a beautiful relay throw to cut down what would have been the Giants’ 3rd run of the inning- and the game. That play loomed larger than ever after Manny’s even bigger hit in the 9th tied the game. Spencer Bivens (1-2) retired the first two batters in the 10th before Cronenworth ripped a grounder through the hole between 1st & 2nd into right field, scoring automatic runner Jackson Merrill easily from 3rd to give the Padres their 1st and only lead of the game. Yuki Matsui (1-1) tossed a perfect 9th and Jeremiah Estrada picked up his 2nd save. With a runner at 3rd after a sac bunt, Estrada retired Heliot Ramos and Jung Hoo Lee on grounders to shortstop to end the game. Ramos hit his 11th homer, a 2-run blast in the 3rd, but that was all the Giants would get off Pads’ rookie & top prospect Ryan Bergert, who had just been brought up from AAA before the game. Bergert gave up just those 2 runs while scattering 6 hits over 5 innings in his 1st big-league start. Giants starter Landon Roupp shut the Padres down- allowing just 4 hits in 6 1/3 shutout innings. After the Pads' 1st 2 hitters reached base in the 8th, Giants 3rd baseman Matt Chapman snagged Merrill’s grounder, stepped on the base then threw to 1st to finish a sweet 5-3 double play to end the inning and keep the Padres off the board- for the time being. Before the Pads got to Doval for the tying runs in the 9th, the Giants’ closer hadn’t allowed a run in 20 2/3 innings. Stephen Kolek and the Padres bullpen pitched 10 scoreless innings, & Jose Iglesias’ sacrifice fly scored automatic runner Jake Cronenworth in the top of the 10th inning, as the Pads squeaked by the Giants 1-0 to win the opener of this very important 4-game series series at San Francisco. The win gives the Padres a 2-game lead over the Giants in the NL West, and it also moves them to within a game of the 1st-place Dodgers, who lost 4-3 to the New York Mets tonight. The Padres are 3-0 against the Giants this season. Cronenworth went to 3rd base on a leadoff sacrifice bunt by Tyler Wade. Pads’ starter Stephen Kolek matched scoreless innings with the Giants’ Logan Webb before giving way to the bullpen after 5 2/3 shutout innings. Kolek- the former reliever making just his 5th career start- allowed just 3 hits while striking out 3 & walking none. The right-handed Kolek escaped a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the 2nd inning, getting a groundout & a double-play ball to keep the Giants off the board. Both plays were made by Iglesias, who was playing 3rd base for Manny Machado, who DH’d tonight. The Padres also dodged a big bullet in the 7th when Adrian Morejon & Jeremiah Estrada walked the bases loaded before Estrada struck out Jung Hoo Lee to leave 3 more Giants stranded on base. Jason Adam struck out the side in a scoreless 8th inning, allowing a leadoff single & an intentional walk around the 3 K’s. Closer Robert Suarez (1-1) got the win after pitching 2 innings of perfect baseball after allowing a leadoff single to start the 9th. Morejon, Estrada, Adam & Suarez combined to throw 4 1/3 scoreless innings, giving up just 2 hits & striking out 7 Padres. This on the heels of yesterday’s equally brilliant performance in their comeback win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Webb went 8 scoreless innings for the Giants, striking out 7 and walking none. The Padres did touch him up for 6 hits, but the tough right-hander made big pitches to get out of innings when he needed to. Manny Machado homered and drove in the go-ahead run, the bullpen pitched 6 2/3 brilliant innings in back of Randy Vasquez, and the Padres beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-4 in their series finale at Petco Park. The Pads trailed 4-2 heading into the 7th inning, but Pirates’ relievers Tanner Rainey and Caleb Ferguson imploded with 4 walks and the Padres bats suddenly came to life with a 4-run rally that gave them the 6-4 lead. Manny Machado’s deep sacrifice fly drove in Elias Diaz to make it 5-4 Padres, then Tyler Wade’s infield single made it 6-4. Luis Arraez drove in Jose Iglesias with the game-tying single, and Diaz’s pinch-hit single scored Xander Bogaerts to bring the Padres to within a run at 4-3. Fernando Tatis Jr walked in 4 pitches, loading the bases after Pirates’ reliever Rainey Bogaerts, Jose Iglesias and The Pads cut the lead in half in the bottom of the 6th. Arraez and Jackson Merrill each doubled to lead off the inning, with Merrill driving in Arraez to cut it to 4-2, bring the tying run to the plate and chase Pirates’ starter Andrew Heaney. Pinch-hitter Tyler Wade was retired on a fly ball out by reliever Chase Shugart, keeping it at 4-3. Heaney had retired 13 Padres in a row after Jake Cronenworth’s sacrifice bunted Xander Bogaerts to 2nd after Bogey singled to lead off the 2nd inning. The Padres’ bullpen was fantastic again, with Wandy Peralta pitching out of a bases-loaded, 1-out jam in the 3rd inning, David Morgan and Adrian Morejon kept the Pirates off the board and keep the Pads in the game. Jason Adam pitched a 1-2-3 8th and Robert Suarez worked the 9th for his MLB-leading 19th save. Manny Machado gave the Padres a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the 1st inning. Manny has But their lead didn’t last long, as Andrew McCutcheon hit a 2-run homer in the 3rd off Randy Vasquez, the 1st hit of the game allowed by the right-hander. O’Neil Cruz had walked and stolen 2nd base- for the 2nd time in 2 at-bats- right before the homer, McCutcheon’s 2nd of the series. With 2 down, Spencer Horowitz doubled off the wall in left field when Gavin Sheets- who is not a true left fielder- took a bad angle on the ball. Horwitz then scored on Ke’Bryan Hayes, who was thrown out when Machado cut off Jackson Merrill’s throw as he was rounding 1st and caught him in the 8-5-3 rundown. Adam Frazier led off the 4th with a solo HR (3) to left off Vasquez, pushing the Pittsburgh lead to 4-1. Sheets gave the Pads- and the crowd- a big scare on the play, as he ran full-speed into the left-field wall. The slugger went to the ground and stayed down for quite a while before walking off. Luis Arraez singled in the tying and go-ahead runs against his former team, and Miami Marlins rookie 2nd baseman Ronny Simón's three errors helped the Padres storm all the way back from a 6-run hole for a wild 8-6 win at Petco Park. Simón was charged with a 4th error but the scorer changed the call to a single by Xander Boegarts. Miami took a 6-0 lead after sending 10 batters to the plate in the first against Stephen Kolek (3-1), who got through 5 1/3 innings for the win. San Diego started its comeback when Fernando Tatis Jr. homered over the Petco Porch- his 13th homer- to leadoff the 1st inning off Miami starter Max Meyer. Simón’s errors started in the 2nd when, with runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out, he dove for Tyler Wade’s grounder, it deflected off his glove for an RBI single and rolled into foul territory. He then chased down the ball and threw it away from catcher Agustín Ramírez, allowing another run to score. San Diego pulled to within a run at 6-5 in the 3rd on Bogaerts' RBI single, and a Jake Cronenworth sacrifice fly. Simón’s fielding error allowed Wade to reach leading off the 4th. Simón fielded Tatis' grounder and tried to force Wade at 2nd but his throw went over shortstop Javier Sanoja’s head for another error. Wade scored on Arraez’s single to tie it at 6. Cronenworth’s leadoff single in the 5th led to him scoring the go-ahead run on Arraez's 3rd hit, a 2-out single to center. Miami traded Arraez- a 3-time batting champ- to the Padres on May 4, 2024.
