Dylan Cease was good but (again) not quite consistent enough, Manny Machado committed a throwing error leading to an unearned run for the 2nd straight game, and the Padres saw a 2nd straight late rally falling just short in a 3-2 loss- their 2nd 1-run loss in a row- that gives the Miami Marlins a 2-1 series win and knocked the Pads down to 3-3 (against 2 terrible teams) on this 10-game road trip. Cease and Sandy Alcantara (W, 5-9) went back and forth in a beautiful pitchers’ duel, with the Miami ace- and former Cy Young winner- getting the best of the man who finished 4th in the voting last season. Cease (5 innings, 3 runs/2 earned, 3 walks, 5 K’s) walked the 1st 2 hitters of the game for Miami, then struck out the next 2 before giving up a 2-out, 2-run single to Agustin Ramirez. Machado’s wild throw on Javier Sanoja’s grounder leading off the 5th inning led to another unearned run for the Marlins, as Jesus Sanchez smashed a 2-run homer a couple of hitters later for Miami. Cease (3-10) struck out 5 and walked just 3, allowing 2 earned runs on just 4 hits in 5 innings. Alcantara went 7 innings, giving up just 4 hits and an unearned run that scored in the 4th, when Manny singled in Luis Arraez, who had singled and gone to 2nd on an error by catcher Will Fortes on a pickoff attempt. The Pads added 1 more in the 9th, when Jackson Merrill doubled and scored on a single from Jose Iglesias. Kyle Hart pitched 2 scoreless innings in relief, and David Morgan added a scoreless 8th as the San Diego bullpen continues to shine. Robert Suarez worked the 9th to pick up his MLB-leading 29th save, Jason Adam pitched the 8th, Jeremiah Estrada worked a perfect 7th, and Adrian Morejon gave them 1 2/3 perfect innings with 2 strikeouts. The Pads’ bullpen leads the major leagues with 44 saves. The are 44 and three when leading after eight innings. They have won 22 1-run games, 2nd in MLB. Luis Arraez flew out to deep left-center field with the game-winning run on 1st base to end the game, and the Philadelphia Phillies escaped Petco Park with a 2-1 win over the San Diego Padres to wrap up the 1st half of the season and hit the all-star break. Pinch-hitter Jake Cronenworth drew a 4-pitch walk to start the 9th, Bryce Johnson laid down a sacrifice bunt, and Elias Diaz popped out, they walked Fernando Tatis Jr., to face Arraez. Jose Iglesias Manny Machado Manny singled and Xander Bogaerts walked to greet reliever Orion Kerkering, but Jackson Merrill popped out and Jose Iglesias flew out to end the threat. The Phillies took a 2-1 lead in the 8th, when rookie David Morgan relieved Arian Morejon after Bryce Harper’s 1-out double. Morgan struck out out Nick Castellanos for our #2, but JD Realmuto doubled to left-center to score Harper. Jose Iglesias’ RBI single off Christopher Sanchez with the infield in scored Manny Machado in the bottom of the 7th to tie the game at 1-1. Machado led off the inning with a single, went to 2nd on Xander Bogaerts’ single, and scored on Iglesias’ hit last the dove of 2nd baseman Bryson Stott. The hit and RBI were sweet redemption for Iglesias, who struck out with the bases loaded to end the bottom of the 1st against Sanchez, who settled in and dominated the Padres after that. Pivetta deserved better. The right-handed gave up just 1 unearned run on 3 hits over 6 2/3 innings, striking out 8 and walking 3, yet he remains stuck on 9 wins. Pivetta could easily have 3-4 more wins with some run support. After striking out Trea Turner and Kyle Schwarber, Pivetta issued a 2-out walk to Bryce Harper, Nick Castellanos reached on a rare throwing error by Manny Machado, and Realmuto reached on an infield single, loading the bases forStott, who hit a chopper to 1st. The San Diego Padres came back twice against Philadelphia Phillies Ace Zach Wheeler to beat the NL-East leaders 5-4 at Petco Park and take a 2-0 series lead and set themselves up to go for the sweep in tomorrow’s finale. Manny Machado hit the go-ahead sacrifice fly, Jackson Merrill hit 2 home runs off Phillies’ ace Wheeler, tying the game both times, and the Padres’ bullpen- minus their 3 all-star relievers- slammed the door on the Phillies. With having pitched back-to-back days, closer Robert Suarez, Jason Adam and Adrian Morejon Jeremiah Estrada struck out Trea Turner, got Kyle Schwarber on a fly ball to left, and Bryce Harper to ground to 1st to close it out. Yuki Matsui got Brandon Marsh to pop out with runners in 1st & 3rd and 2 outs in the 8th inning. Machado drove in Fernando Tatis Jr., who had just gone from 1st to 3rd on Luis Arraez’s single with 1 out in the 7th. Manny had just made a beautiful play to get Edmondo Sosa on a chopper to 3rd with the bases loaded to help rookie David Morgan get out of the jam. Merrill’s 2nd homer tied the game at 4 in the bottomof the 6th, sending the Petco Park crowd into a frenzy. After the Padres were no-hit for 8 innings last night, their bats woke up against the Cincinnati bullpen. Jake Cronenworth went deep in the 6th with a 2-run shot that got San Diego within 4-3. Sheets then made it 6-4 with a monstrous blast to right-center to give the Pads their 1st and only lead of the game. Bryan Hoeing (1-0) pitched an inning and 2/3 of scoreless baseball in relief of Randy Vasquez, who was roughed up by the Reds. Vasquez gave up 4 earned runs on 9 hits in 4 1/3 innings. Closer Robert Suarez got out of his own jam in the bottom of the 9th to pick up his 23rd save. Suarez walked 2 hitters before striking out Spencer Steer on nothing but 100+ mile an hour fastballs to end the game. Steer hit three homers on Friday.
