Tatis Jr. led off the home half of the 1st inning with a monster shot into the basket of the upper deck in left field. Arraez followed with a single, and Bogaerts launched a 2-run shot almost exactly where Fernando hit his to make it 3-0 Padres after just the 1st 3 hitters of the game. Elias Diaz smashed a 2-run shot of his own- a line drive bullet over the left-field wall- to make it 5-0 in the 2nd inning. Yuki Matsui (3-1) pitched 2 1/3 innings in back of King, picking up the win in spite of allowing the only D'Backs' only run of the game, a solo home run off the bat of Geraldo Perdomo in the 5th to make it 5-1. Morejon, (6th inning) Miller, (7th) Estrada (8th) and Suarez (9th) finished it off from there. Miller and Estrada both struck the side. The Pads open up their best-of-3 National Wild Card Series at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday. Freddy Fermin’s single in the bottom of the 11th inning scored Bryce Johnson with the winning run, as the San Diego Padres came back to beat the NL-best Milwaukee Brewers 5-4- sending the Pads to their 4th playoff berth in 6 years & sending 40,000+ fans into a frenzy at sold-out Petco Park. Jose Iglesias sacrifice bunt moved Johnson to 3rd with 1 out, bringing Fermin to the plate. Iglesias had already homered, singled, walked & scored. Padres’ reliever Bradgley Rodriguez escaped a bases-loaded jam with 1-out in the top of the 11th with a double play to send it to the home half of the inning & set the stage for the walkoff. O’Hearn’s double to left field in the 6th came after San Diego took advantage of 3 wild pitches and 3 walks while chasing White Sox starter Yoendrys Gómez (3-3). Fernando Tatis Jr. got the go-ahead rally started with a leadoff single and scored from 3rd when Manny Machado knocked Gómez out of the game with a game-tying single. Fraser Ellard then walked 3 of the 5 Pads’ hitters he faced and gave up the go-ahead hit- O’Hearn’s double- making it 5-2. Jackson Merrill homered leading off the 2nd inning, former White Sox player Gavin Sheets padded the Pads’ lead with an RBI single in the 8th, and Luis Arraez singled in another run in the 9th to finish up the scoring for San Diego. Randy Vasquez pitched his best game of the season, Jackson Merrill homered, Luis Arraez added 3 hits including an RBI single, and the San Diego Padres won the opener of their crucial 4-game series against the Colorado Rockies, 2-0 at Petco Park. Vasquez tossed 6 innings of 4-hit baseball, striking out 9 and walking none in his best outing of the season, and maybe his career. The right-hander has been pretty good this season, keeping the Padres in games and winning some with an ERA under 4. The Pads won 4 of Vasquez’s 5 starts at a crucial time in June, before the trade deadline brought in the new guys, and when Michael King and Yu Darvish were out and Dylan Cease was struggling. There is no overlooking how much Vasquez has helped keep San Diego in the playoff race this season. The Padres’ bullpen was fantastic again, tossing 3 perfect innings, striking out 5 Rockies. Vasquez, Jeremiah Estrada, Mason Miller and Robert Suarez combined to retire the last 12 Rockies to come to the plate. Arraez was the only Padre with more than 1 hit, and they were all singles besides Merrill’s homer, his 11th of the season. Jackson has been coming around his last few games, picking up some big hits and slugging extra-base hits all over the field like he did last year in that magical rookie season. Manny Machado continues to struggle. The Pads’ superstar 3rd baseman went 0-4 tonight, on the heels of his 0-12 series against the Cincinnati Reds, a series the Pads lost 2-1. Manny is batting .108 in 9 games this month after hitting just .222 in August. Fernando Tatis Jr., who went 0-4, has also struggled with both average and power this season. The Pads defense continues to shine in key moments. Left-fielder Ramon Laureano made an outstanding catch up against the wall in foul territory to rob Mike Moniak to save a run in the 1st inning, and Machado- who committed a rare error earlier in the game- started a 5-4-3 double-play in the 3rd. The LA Dodgers were off tonight, so the Padres have moved to within 2.5 games of the defending World Series champs with 15 games left to play. Ramon Laureano made a leaping catch to rob Austin Hays of a game-tying homer in the 7th. Robert Suarez gave up a 2-run home run to Tyler Stephenson in the 9th inning, and the San Diego Padres’ offense managed just 3 hits in a 4-2 loss to Cincinnati Reds that spoiled the return of Ace Michael King and evened up this 3-game series at 1 apiece with the finale set for tomorrow evening at Petco Park. Stephenson hammered a low and inside sinker from Suarez just fair down the left-field line to win it, just 5 innings after being robbed of a homer to right field on a spectacular catch by Fernando Tatis Jr., who has robbed 5 fingers this season. Suarez (L, 4-6) walked Lux with 2 outs to get to Stephenson. The Reds hit 2 solo home runs early off King, who looked good for a guy starting for the 1st time since August 8th and for just the 2nd time since May 18th. The San Diego offense certainly didn’t help him much, managing just 2 runs on 3 hits the whole game. The Padres scored 2 runs in the 5th inning, 1 on Jackson Merrill’s 2nd RBI triple in as many nights, scoring Ramon Laureano, and the other on Jake Cronenworth’s sacrifice fly that scored Merrill. Jose Iglesias was hit by a pitch and stole 2nd with 1 out, but Freddy Fermin struck out and Fernando Tatis Jr popped out in foul ground to end the inning. Merrill doubled with 1 out in the 7th, but pinch-hitter Luis Arraez struck out and Cronenworth flied out to end the threat. Manny Machado flew out to the warning track with Tatis on 2nd with 2 outs in the 8th, but other than that they didn’t get much going tonight. King went 5 innings, giving up just 3 hits and 2 runs while walking just 1 and striking out 2. He missed almost 3 months with inflammation in his shoulder, came back on August 8th, and developed swelling in his knee after just 2 innings. The Padres’ long and set-up relievers kept the Reds off the board just like last night, until Cincy got to Suarez in the 9th. King’s return couldn’t have come fast enough for this Padres’ rotation that has been shaky at best without him, with Dylan Cease having a down year, Yu Darvish just rounding into form after missing the 1st 3 months of the season and the absolute lack of a 5th starter. Only Nick Pivetta, (13-5) who will start this series’ finale tomorrow against the Reds, has given the Padres a consistent winner in the rotation so far. Merrill went 2-4 with the double, triple, RBI & run scored. He was the only Padre with more than 1 hit. The San Diego Padres offense erupted Robert Suarez held on with the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the 9th inning, to edge the Colorado Rockies- who scored the last 6 runs of the game after falling behind big early- at Coors Field in Denver to even this 3-game series at a game apiece and snap their 5-game losing streak and move within a game of the 1st-place LA Dodgers The Padres pounded out 16 hits in a “Coors Field Special” that saw the 2 teams combine to score 18 runs on 30 hits- 4 of them home runs & 3 of those by the Rockies. Fernando Tatis Jr. hit his 20th home run for the Padres, a 3-run shot in their 6-run 2nd inning off Rockies starter McCade Brown. Ryan O’Hearn had 3 hits, got on base all 5 times he came to the plate, and scored twice to lead the San Diego attack. Luis Arraez also had 3 hits, and drove in 2 runs for the Pads. Freddy Fermin went 2-5 with a double 3 RBI’s and played a great game behind the plate as usual. Ramon Laureano added 2 hits. The only Padre who went hitless tonight was Manny Machado, who went 0-5. Suarez gave up a solo HR to Mickey Moniak (2-5, 2 RBI) with 1 out in the 9th to let the Rockies back within 2 runs. Jordan Beck’s 2-out single brought up Brenton Doyle- the Nationals League’s top hitter since July 1st- as the tying run. Doyle ripped a bullet to right, right at Fernando for the final out to end the game. Reliever Mason Miller was sensational tonight out of the Padre bullpen, going 1.1 innings (through the 8th) and allowing just 1 hit and striking out 2. Why he isn’t the closer over Suarez at this point is beyond me. Randy Vasquez- who hadn’t pitched since August 23rd and just came back to the majors today- pitched 6 innings, giving up 3 runs, 2 earned, on 8 hits in a good spot start when you consider the Pads’ recent struggles and that the game was at Coors Field. Jordan Beck had 3 hits- including a 3-run homer- for the Rockies. Ezequiel Tovar and Warmong Bernabel each also had 3 hits for Colorado. Pads’ young star Jackson Merrill- who just came off the injured list with a bad ankle- left the game after being hit on the same ankle he just came back off the injured list because of. The Baltimore Orioles walked off the Dodgers for the 2nd straight game, giving the Padres the opportunity to make up a game in the pennant race. The injury plagued Padres managed just 2 hits in 8 innings off Kyle Freeland, (4-14, 5.10 ERA) Nick Pivetta tossed 6 solid innings, Hunter Goodman homered and doubled in a run, and the lowly Colorado Rockies (40-101) shut out the Pads 3-0 in the series opener in Denver. Freeland retired the first 13 Pads’ hitters before Ramón Laureano’s 5th-inning double. Jose Iglesias singled with 2 outs in the 8th for the only other Padres hit off Freeland, tied a career high with 10 strikeouts and threw just 88 pitches in a true master performance. The loss is the Padres’ 9th in the last 11 games. They are still just 2 games behind the 1st-place LA Dodgers in the NL West race with 21 games left. The Dodgers have lost 6 of their last 7 games. (.220 hitter, 0 HR, no power #’s, 2-9 as PH) Jackson Merrill- who was activated from the injured list today- inexplicably ran for Wagner rather than hit for Fermin. The Padres came close to tying the game or taking the lead in the 7th. With Arraez on 1st and 1 out, Manny Machado ripped one deep to left, but Dylan Beavers ran it down in the edge of the track for a long out. The Orioles took the lead in the top of the 7th off Jason Adam, who gave up a leadoff single to Jeremiah Jackson to start the inning, then Gunnar Henderson bounced one off the mound, for an infield hit. Adam came up lame as he moved toward the ball, with cameras catching him appearing to say he felt something pop. Beavers singled in Jackson with the go-ahead run. Ramon Laureano’s RBI single in the bottom of the 5th scored Freddy Fermin- who had reached on an error- to tie the game at 3. Arraez singled in after a 9-pitch at-bat to tie the game at 2, right after Bryce Johnson’s RBI single got the Pads on the board. The O’s got 2 in the against Cease, who gave up an infield single then walked a batter, leading to a 2-run double off the bat of Samuel Basallo. Joe Ryan shut the Padres out for 7 innings, Byron Buxton homered, and the Padres got beat down 7-2 by the Minnesota Twins to drop the series in Minneapolis and fall 2 games behind the LA Dodgers in the NL West heading into the final month of the season. Buxton and Royce Lewis had 2 hits apiece for the Twins, while Ryan (13-7) allowed just 5 hits while striking out 8 Padres. Freddy Fermin and Bryce Johnson each drove in a run in the 9th inning for the Padres, who only threatened Ryan once, putting runners on 1st and 2nd base with no outs in the 4th. The Pads were being no hit until the 5th inning, when Diaz launched the 1st of his 2 bombs- this one off Twins starter Taj Bradley, who allowed only that 1 run in 5 innings- to tie the game 1–1. Diaz, the starter turned backup catcher after the Freddy Fermin acquisition, put an exclamation point on the 7-run 7th with a 2-run shot that made it 10-3 San Diego. The 7th started with 4 straight singles from Fernando Tatis Jr., Luis Arraez, Machado (scoring Tatis) and Ryan O’Hearn. (scoring Arraez) Gavin Sheets added an RBI single, (scoring Manny) Jake Cronenworth hit a 2-run double off the wall, (scoring pinch-runner Bryce Johnson and O’Hearn) and Diaz homered. (scoring Cronenworth) Ramon Laureano added a 2-run homer in the 8th for the Padres, who had scored 2x in the 6th on back-to-back RBI singles by Laureano (scoring Arraez) and Sheets. (scoring Machado) Pivetta (13-4) didn’t get the win, but the Padres’ record is now 12-3 in games he has started following a loss.
