S4 Ep 158Episode 158: Thought of the Walk on American Ingenuity

Today is Friday so we have a Thought of the Walk episode. This is a short show where I talk through an idea I had while walking with my dogs, or sitting around the fire. American ingenuity is one thing that has made our economy grow despite all the fetters instilled upon it by government. It has lead to breakthroughs. But are we losing it? S4 Ep 157Episode 157: How to Make Hard Cheese

And you know what Wednesday - er I mean Thursday means: We have a homestead focused episode today and I thought it was about time to have the second in our cheese series. Why? Because last week, I was on the road and one of my favorite things to do to eat well is to make a plate with veggies, pickled things hard yummy cheeses and meats in place of a heavy dinner meal. This is even more fun when you can grab a nice cheddar you have been aging and add some slices of that to the mix. #HollerHatWednesday: Where is she and who is she with? S4 Ep 156Episode 156: Replay Episode - Deescalation Strategies and BEES

Today we have a replay episode. The cement pad has been poured and people are still on site putting in the final touches on it and I am just dying to have a DANCE PARTY. But the episode on making hard cheeses is a bit much to jump into at this late hour, so I bring you a replay of an episode from one year ago. We were getting ready for the first spring workshop ever. I got completely publicly reamed by someone in a board meeting in a very inappropriate way. And it got me to thinking about ways to deescalate tense situations. Something we can all use a reminder about, right? SO, enjoy the episode formerly knows as 76. Make it a Great Week! Direct Download

S4 Ep 150Episode 150: How Gratefulness Changes Your Future

Today, I want to examine gratitude and how being grateful for what you can do, what you have and what being grateful for others are in your life can do to help you find a pathway toward growth and success - and ultimately build the life you want to live rather than fall back into old habits of living up to everyone else's expectations. S4 Ep 138Episode 138: Homesteading When You Can't Go All In

Today April Ray of Radiant Acres joins me to talk about transitioning to the homestead from city living ---but not quite. Many folks need to have one person working a full time job while the other gets the homestead up and running. April and her husband and three children live in Hampshire, Tennessee, a tiny town an hour outside of Nashville. Four years ago, after living their entire lives in big cities (Atlanta, Dallas, and Los Angeles), they moved out to the country with a desire to grow their own food and be more self-sufficient. But April's husband, Nick, kept his day job in Nashville and they've learned to be both city and country dwellers at the same time. They've discovered that homesteading isn't an all-or-nothing venture. Self sufficiency doesn't happen overnight. Instead, there's a long period of learning, growing, adventuring, failing, succeeding -- and commuting -- that takes place on the journey. https://www.facebook.com/raydiantacres/ Instagram @raydiantacres

Today, I thought it would be fun to wrap up the month of the modern homesteading kitchen topics by discussing what you should have in yours. It will break up into two categories the Basics and More Advanced. For me, good living and home cooking go hand in hand. And a good set up in the kitchen helps make this possible. Today is a thought of the walk day and I take on what may be to some a sensitive issue: Privilege. My take may not be a new one, but this issue seems to get so bogged down in vocabulary, debate and this intellectual analysis and that intellectual analysis. As I was taking a hike through the forest, I realized that with all the academia, spin, politics and hysteria around the concept of privilege, it is not as complicated as we try to make it. Promoting an idea, project or product takes communication. If people don't hear about what you are up to, they won't "buy in." And by "Buy in" I mean not only purchase something, but also things like download your podcast, read your blog post, spread the word about you, etc. If they do not know you or your product or service exist, things stagnate. So, after you have set your marketing goals, know who you want to target and have an idea about the big picture message of a project, know where these folks are and what they are interested in, you need a content plan. This is even more important if the product you sell is CONTENT. What is a content plan? What do you need to make one? Then what do you do next? Processing it cost me $38 in supplies, of which I only used ¼, so that works out to $.23 cents a pound spent for $120 in meat (conservatively). S4 Ep 111Episode 110: Modern Cooking with Sous Vide

Today, I want to take on another country kitchen topic but from a bit of a different angle over last week: Modern Cooking in the country kitchen with a sous vide machine. Yup, this year, I got my hands on a sous vide machine and started experimenting with it. At first I was a bit skeptical about if it would really make a difference, but I also knew of other uses for it outside of cooking and thought it would be handy to have around. Then I got the thing and ended up LOVING it - like as in loving it more than my crockpot. So today, we will talk about what sous vide is, why I have started using it here at the Holler Homestead and even talk through some recipes. S4 Ep 109Episode 109: Kitchen Cycles on the Homestead

I haven't talked much about homesteading or domestic arts lately. We've focused more on building the life you want to live. So today, I thought, why not surprise them with something that goes back to our roots of homesteading? Cooking has changed Eating out culture Processed/prepared foods Dietary changes and fancified meals Plated and other mail order meal services But the country kitchen goes through cycles. One thing feeds another - or gets in the way. So today, I thought I would run you through a not so atypical morning here at the Holler Homestead…. It all starts with coffee and 30 minutes of peaceful reflection…….Then we dive in. There is something quite satisfying about the levels of production that you can attain if you let one thing feed the next in your kitchen. Next thing you know you have homemade broth in the pantry, lard going in the crockpot, home smoked meat, and easy plan for dinner, and a load of laundry hung out by the fire. So why not learn a new "old" skill this winter and begin developing your own cycles in the kitchen? Make it a great week!
