Matthew Pollard is an internationally recognized consultant, speaker, blogger, author, mentor, coach, and serial entrepreneur with five multi-million dollar business success stories under his belt, all before the age of 30. He is the founder and CEO of Rapid Growth, LLC, dedicated to achieving maximum ROI for businesses of all sizes. Though his client list includes multiple Fortune 500 companies, his real passion is helping small business owners end the overwhelm, eliminate the stress and guesswork, and get on a clear path to Rapid Growth. Called “the real deal” by Forbes, his methods have transformed over 3500 businesses to date. This commitment to a job well done, combined with his father’s favorite saying, “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!” set the stage for Matthew’s entire life. But all too often, it can be overwhelming, stressful, and resource-draining.Matthew loves the process of helping a business determine its exact right message and niche. Ep 27Know Your People | John F. Bates, Captain, USMC & Attorney at Law
EJohn F. Bates, Esq. is the most influential man in my life. He gave me his name, and along with my Mom, he gave me what I believe is a great foundation for life. A number of people have told me he's the best contract attorney in Utah, where he practices, and he's got a deep commitment to fairness and justice. At 17 years old he enlisted in the Marine Corp. and the rest, as they say, is history. He was deployed to Vietnam in April 1965 and medevaced to Okinawa in August 1965, where he was appointed the non-lawyer legal officer for FMFPAC (forward) until being released to the US in December 1965. After being temporarily medically retired from the USMC in 1968, he subsequently received an honorary medical discharge. I personally remember how sad he was because, as he said "I'd rather carry the garbage for the Marine Corp than be the most powerful CEO in the world!" But, even as he dealt with the great physical challenges from his Vietnam experience, he went on to get his law degree. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1971 at age 30, with gratitude to the GI Bill. He then worked in the oil and gas industry, running the legal department for a large multinational company until he decided to hang out his own shingle and go into business for himself. He got his MBA in 1993 & LLM in 1997. In this episode, we discuss the many lessons he took from his time in the service and the many ways those lessons shaped his leadership style and philosophy. I know I'm biased, but this is a very fun ride and I hope you enjoy hearing from the most influential hero in my life. Here is a link to the poem we discuss in the podcast. Enjoy! --------John Bates provides 1:1 Executive Communications Coaching, both in-person and online. Good & Prosper also offers courses to entrepreneurs and SME business owners to enable them to further their expertise in finance, capital allocation, leadership, culture, and strategy, as well as individual leadership coaching and mentoring.Steven's perspective on business, politics, and society is shaped primarily by his alignment with the Austrian School of Economics. He was irredeemably inspired by his early reading of the Intelligent Investor at the age of 24 and was at a loss to understand why anyone would want to think differently about investing and capital allocation other than from a value perspective. He is a Christian Libertarian by conviction.Steven is an Englishman, born in Lancashire in 1963 who moved to Germany at the age of 24 after completing his education at Rugby and Durham University. Starting in 1987, he spent almost all of his investment career in Munich, Germany, before moving to Ireland with his family in early 2015. He's an avid long-distance trail walker, cross country skier, and sailor, reads voraciously, listens to an unhealthy amount of podcasts, writes enthusiastically, and drinks large quantities of green tea every day.Steven is also a founding member of the Small Giants Community, a wonderful, US-based organization, that caters to companies that choose to be great instead of big and provides resources and a community to value-based leaders. In addition, Steven is an active supporter and mentor within the Ashoka Social Entrepreneurship network, both here in Ireland and in Germany and Britta and he's been actively involved with Ashoka in one way or another since 2002.In 2015, Steven was invited to join an interfaith delegation to the Caribbean Island State of Grenada, whose purpose was to coordinate a number of reconstruction and redevelopment projects for infrastructure seriously damaged by hurricanes a decade earlier. As part of that delegation representing the Anglican community, he was awarded an honor bestowed by the Governor-General into the Order of the Nation of Grenada with the rank of Knight Commander.Since 2017 Steven served as one of a number of business professionals working as mentors to high-growth entrepreneurs with the Ryan Business Academy's Mentoring for Growth' Program. In 2018 Steven was elected to serve on the founding steering committee (supervisory board) of the MyData Global Organisation, a Helsinki-based foundation set up to 'empower individuals with their personal data, thus helping them and their communities develop knowledge, make informed decisions, and interact more consciously and efficiently with each other as well as with organizations.'Steven believes that business can and should be a force for good in society and that the more people take entrepreneurial responsibility for their lives, the better the society will be.
