Prior to his breakthrough in the bread game Dave served a total of four prison sentences for crimes ranging from burglary to armed robbery to drug dealing. Dave Dahl was able to turn his life around and find success after prison. Dave's story is one of second chances. On today's show Jason Spyres joined John to discuss the major injustice he suffered as a result of selling cannabis in his teens. Jason was arrested on drug charges nearly 20 years ago. In the years since, he’s been on a path of personal success and growth. When he was 19 years old, he was arrested for selling cannabis during an undercover sting, and until recently, the state of Illinois had kept him out of society for it. Jason served 15 years of a 30-year prison sentence. Once Jason got a taste of freedom, he pushed relentlessly for his goals. While on work release he worked 2 jobs and took on a full slate of college classes to work towards his goal of becoming an engineer. Currently, Jason is enrolled at Stanford University and is actively petitioning the Governor of Illinois for a full pardon. On today's episode Lisa Hanna join John to share her remarkable story. Lisa is a US Army veteran, having served 2 tours overseas. She graduated from Thomas M. Cooley Law School, in 1993. However, she suffered a personal tragedy months earlier when her son passed away. Drugs and alcohol became Lisa’s medication to numb the depression after her only son's death. She did get clean and left her abusive husband Scott. Then Scott was busted with methamphetamine, marked bills, and stolen guns. When pressured by prosecutors he agreed to “cooperate” in exchange for a reduced sentence. He said Lisa was his source, which she claims is not true. Lisa was charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute a substance containing Methamphetamine. She served more than 15 years in federal prison. While in prison, Lisa wrote a book called Prison Bitch, a humorous memoir covering her time inside federal female camps and prisons. When Lisa got out of prison she kept pushing and reached her goal to become a lawyer! She was sworn in recently is and she can legally practice law. Lisa hopes to help other women who have been targeted on trumped up conspiracy charges to avoid the nightmare she lived for over 15 years. Learn more about your ad choices. Today on Felony Friday Michael Monsivias joins John to talk about his experience in the criminal justice system and how he's using his own experience to create better opportunities other prisoners. Michael also details one of his worst days in prison, when prison guards threw flash grenades into his cell unprovoked. Two of them exploded, burning his flesh. Today on Felony Friday Judy Henderson joins John to talk about the unbelievable injustice she suffered in the criminal justice system. In 1982, Judy Henderson was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 50 years for her role in a robbery-turned-murder. Her boyfriend at the time – the man who committed a robbery, fired a gun, killed someone, and shot Henderson herself in the process – went free, while Henderson did the time.
