On today's show Drako Sullivan joins John to share his incredible story. Drako grew up under difficult circumstances. His mother became addicted to crack cocaine when he was 8 years old. As a result, Drako took a role helping to raise his siblings. Drako began selling drugs at 13 years old and was first arrested for selling drugs at 17. After his third drug conviction, he landed in federal prison for a 262 month sentence. While in prison he wrote and published two books, Embracing Change and At All Cost. On today's episode of Felony Friday Matt Freeman joins John to share how he went from serving on the front lines in Iraq to being addicted to drugs and eventually convicted of drug trafficking. Matt is an Iraq war veteran, who was discharged for drug use. He was later arrested for “Trafficking in Dangerous Drugs”, the result of being the target of multiple controlled buys by a former friend. He was sentenced to 3 years in prison, serving the last 6 months in a halfway house. After his release, Matt taught himself how to repair cars in order to make himself marketable and has been working in the field ever since. Matt hosts a podcast called The Statist Quo, which seeks to fill in the blanks left by the mainstream media on war and military matters, as well as exploring history, current events, politics and economics from a libertarian perspective. On today's show Angelique Knowles joins John to share her inspirational story of how she overcame obstacles in prison, healed herself from the trauma she suffered throughout her life and forged a path forward of love and compassion. Angelique was sentenced to 72 months at Washington correction center for women and served 66 months. Before that she did 126 months for manufacturing methamphetamines, and possession with intent to deliver. Throughout her time in prison she was subjected to inadequate medical care and abuse. She was subjected to horrifying trauma in her early years. But she has found the strength to push on and use her story to inspire others. On today's show Michael Monsivais makes his return to the show. Michael has an incredible story that you can hear in detail on Episode 147 of this show. Michael will be the first to admit that he made mistakes, but he turned his life around while in prison. He turned an obstacle into an opportunity and started a welding program to teach and certify his fellow prisoners. He has taken that one step further since getting his freedom by founding "No More Locked Doors," which is a non-profit with the goal helping the formerly incarcerated get the skills and education to help with reintegration back into life on the outside. During the show we spent some time discussing the violent attack that Michael was subjected to by BOP prison guards while incarcerated at FCI Lompoc. Michael suffered severe burns when prison guards threw flashbangs that landed on top of him and burned him badly. Instead of getting proper medical care, he was thrown in the SHU for 71 days. His story was profiled recently by Reason, which talked about neglect of prisoners by the Bureau of Prisons and connected that to Jeffrey Epstein's death. Learn more about your ad choices. On today's show Irma Alred joins John to share a heartbreaking and inspiring story. Irma was was convicted for a conspiracy to possess with intent to sell marijuana. It was just her second offense, but she was sentenced to 364 months in prison (30 years 4 months) along with a fine of $25,000, with 18 % interest, 10 years probation. Irma served 21 years and was released from prison on October 30th 2015. There is so much more to the story. While in prison Irma dealt with debilitating brain aneurysm that resulted in two surgeries.
