On today's episode of Felony Friday John welcomes Lynn Espejo back to the show. Lynn previously appeared on Episode 110 to talk about the rampant prosecutorial misconduct in her case. Her appearance was prior to reporting to serve her prison time. She's on the show today to share her experience in the federal prison system. Lynn was convicted on February 8, 2017, after an eight-day jury trial, and was sentenced to 45-months in federal prison, of which she served 27 months, before being released to home confinement during COVID-19. During her incarceration, Lynn's blog, Inside-The-Walls, started out as a way for her to vent her frustration at being indicted and convicted for a crime she did not commit, and what she saw as a broken criminal justice system. However, it soon became a voice against the corruption, fraud, and violation of inmate rights she witnessed while incarcerated at Federal Prison Camp Bryan located in Bryan, Texas. On today's episode of Felony Friday John is joined by Chad Marks. Chad is well known in the criminal justice community for the incredible works he's done to help other incarcerated individuals to get their freedom. Chad did this all while serving his own sentence. Chad is known as a Jailhouse lawyer. Although he has no formal legal training, he has used his gift for understanding the law to give back. In February of 2003 Chad was convicted of Conspiracy to Distribute 50 grams or more of Cocaine Base. When the case was taken to trial and he was sentenced to serve 40 years in prison. His co-defendants, who committed the same crimes, pled guilty and were sentenced to far less time. In October of 2018 the judge who sentenced Chad wrote a letter to President Trump in favor of his clemency. Finally, last month on June 25th Chad was released from prison on compassionate release. Chad Marks walked out of Federal Prison after serving 17 years. And he spent the vast majority of those 17 years working to free his friends and brothers behind bars. Rick reached out a few weeks ago in order to advocate for his friend Eddie McDevitt, who is serving life in prison for a tragedy resulting from a bar fight. In 1983, Eddie got into a fight with a former cop, the cop died. Eddie was charged with capital murder and ended up with life in prison. Eddie should have been free 31 years ago. If he fought a barber or a taxi driver, he would have been out of prison long ago. Rick did time with Eddie and says he saved his life while in prison. Rick did 5 years for a drug conspiracy charge. On today's episode of Felony Friday Rufus Rochell and Amy Povah join John. Rufus Rochell walked out of FCI Coleman on April 24th of this year. The BOP gave him home confinement, so he is still serving the remainder of his absurd sentence. In 1988 Rufus was sentenced to 40 years 8 months for Conspiracy with Intent to Distribute 50 grams or more of Crack and Possession with Intent of the same amount. Prior to his arrest he had only minor infractions. There were no drugs founds. There were no undercover buys. Rufus was thrown in a cage based on the testimony of convicts who had their own freedom to gain by pointing the finger at Rufus. Amy Povah has been on the show before to share her story of injustice and talk about the incredible Cando Foundation that she founded, which is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit foundation that advocates Clemency for All Non-violent Drug Offenders. On today's show John is joined by Ted Visner. Ted was released from a Michigan state prison on May 7, 2020 after having served 2 years. His sentence was the result of a malicious prosecution. Ted was not permitted to meaningfully participate in his defense. The police, by the direction of the prosecutor – Bernard Coppolino, stole exculpatory evidence from his home to keep this critical defense evidence, (critical evidence being Mr. Visner's Michigan Medical Marihuana Program cards/licensing), from being presented to the jury. MPD150 is an effort by local organizers, researchers, artists and activists, in which they've published an investigation into the conduct of the Minneapolis Police Department throughout its 150-year history and call for abolishing the Minneapolis police. MPD150's goal is to shift the discussion of police violence in Minneapolis from one of procedural reforms to one of meaningful structural change. They want to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department and transfer the social service functions to community-based agencies and organizations. They want to replace emergency intervention functions with models not based on military methods and to redirect resources to support community resilience and people-directed development. Today's episode of Felony Friday with Lyn Ulbricht was co-produced by Lions of Liberty Pride member Tyler Colford. At Lions of Liberty we invite our Nittany and above Lions Pride members to assist with producing an episode of one of our shows. You can hear more about Tyler below. Lyn Ulbricht returns to Felony Friday for a second time. She was previously on the show back on episode 137. Lyn is a warrior for criminal justice reform and of course she advocates fiercely for the release of her son Ross Ulbricht. Ross was the creator of Silk Road and is serving a life sentence for the non-violent crime of creating a website. Silk road was a place where individuals could freely buy and sell goods using bitcoin. The site did not allow child pornography or stolen goods to be sold and was mostly used for marijuana transactions. The trial was filled with prosecutorial corruption and suppression of evidence. The judge in the case, who is no longer on the bench, gave Ross an incredibly harsh sentence that had no precedence. In this episode we talk about how faith has helped Lyn and Ross to navigate this crisis is their lives. And how Ross has been able to find peace, while incarcerated, through gratitude and by forgiving those those who served him with immense injustice. On today's show Albert Edwards joins John. Albert shares how an injustice made him bitter for more than a decade and how a decision to change his mindset, changed his life. Albert was convicted of a non-violent drug offense in 1994 and sentenced to 440 months. On the show Albert goes into the details of how the case and sentencing played out. He was convicted and sentenced based on drug sales made by his co-defendants to an informant. Albert had no direct sales to the informant, but ended up being guilt by association. Felix just got out of prison after serving 26 years for Conspiracy to Possess with Intent to Distribute; Distribute Cocaine and Conspiracy to Launder Monetary Instruments, for which he was originally sentenced to 30 years. His daughter, Allegra, was instrumental in getting him home by petitioning the court for his compassion release. Felix's case is absolutely nuts. You'll probably have to listen twice to understand what happened. He was originally sentenced to 30 years in 1994, he won his appeal, but ended up getting sentenced to life in 2003 on the same case! Today's guest on Felony Friday is Judge Jim Gray. Judge Gray joins John to discuss his recently launched bid to win the nomination for President on the Libertarian Party's ticket. Judge Gray is an American jurist and writer. He received his undergraduate degree from UCLA in 1966 and a JD from USC in 1971. Gray was named to the Santa Ana Municipal Court in 1983 by the Governor, who then appointed Gray to the Orange County Superior Court in 1989. Judge Gray was the 2012 Libertarian Party vice presidential nominee, as well as the party's 2004 candidate for the United States Senate in California.
