My guest today on Felony Friday is Michael Braxton. He goes by the name Alim. He has been on Death row for 28 years and spent 7 of those years in solitary confinement. He was sentenced to death for killing another inmate at the Caledonia Correctional Center in Halifax, where he was already serving a life sentence for killing a man during a robbery in Raleigh. He credits his faith for changing him as a man. In addition to being a co-author of the Crimson Letters: Voices From Death Row, he is also is a rapper and musician who produces music on Death Row. On today’s episode of Felony Friday Quawntay “Bosco” Adams joins John to share his incredible story. Quawntay spent 28 of his 45 years of life confined to the cells of juvenile, county, state, and federal detention facilities. Now he’s using those struggles to inspire change and hope. In May 2006, facing an impending conviction, Bosco escaped from a maximum security detention facility and was captured not long after. But his escapee caught the attention of an international audience. Then in January 2020 Bosco defied the odds again by discovering a loophole in the law that would change his own story. He filed a motion and fired his skeptical court appointed attorney. He took the fight for his freedom into his own hands and he won. Bosco was granted immediate release on July 24, 2020. While he was in prison he wrote the book, Chasin’ Freedum, which has been optioned for a feature film that is set to begin production soon. On today’s episode of Felony Friday we have our second interview with an inmate on death row with Lyle May joining the show. Prior to Lyle calling into the show , John is joined again by co-author on the Crimson Letters: Voices from Death Row, Tessie Castillo. The book was the brain child of Tessie and she shares why people need to read it and some of the challenges she had to overcome to make this book reality. For the second part of the show, Lyle May calls in and provides a fascinating and engaging interview. He addresses topics that span from how he stays motivated on death row to his criminal justice reform proposals. Lyle was convicted of a double homicide in 1999 at age 19. While incarcerated he has managed to earn a GED and Associate's Degree. He has also published two books and is working on his third. On today’s edition of Felony Friday, Richard Midkiff joins John to share his unique story. Richard was sentenced to 38 years in prison for felony murder, related to a 1996 robbery and murder. He was driving the getaway car. In 2019, Richard was released from prison after a series of U.S. Supreme Court rulings in the 2010s affording prisoners who were sentenced to long terms as juveniles the right to have their cases reviewed. The current Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody tried to revoke the plea deal that got him out and send him back to prison. Thankful Richard won the appeal and has remained a free man. Tessie shares her story about how she found herself writing a book with inmates on death row and why she is so passionate about getting these stories out. For the second half of the show John is joined by George T. Wilkerson. Wilkerson was sentenced to two death sentences on December 20, 2006. He is on death row in North Carolina. During his time on death row, Wilkerson has written many articles and recently co-authored the Crimson Letters - Voices from Death Row, which contains 30 compelling essays written in the prisoners' own words. On today's show John is joined by Adam and Ro Clausen. Adam Clausen was sentenced to 213 years in federal prison for Hobbs Act Robbery and 924(c) Use of a Firearm. 213 years and not a soul was was harmed during any of the robberies. Thankfully, after many years of fighting for his freedom, Adam was released this year on compassionate release after serving 20 years. Ro was a previous guest on this show back on Episode 179 of this show, where she advocated for Adam's release. She also shared about her YouTube channel called Strong Prison Wives, where she makes videos in relation to being a strong prison wife. Adam and Ro shared the uncommon and frustrating experience of Adam's last day in prison. The BOP was pathetic and actually made it more difficult for Adam to get out, because he wanted to take the time to make sure he did everything by the book. In 2017, Baldemar was sentenced by U.S. District Judge John McBryde to Life in federal prison. He was convicted of one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute a controlled substance at trial.
