S3 Ep 196Transitions of the Soul - A Tribute to Ariana Garrett

A Powerful Replay: Transitions of the Soul – a Tribute to Dr. Amy Robbins’ mentor and "Soul Mama" Ariana Garrett “There is definitely a connection between what is happening on the other side, and what is happening here in this physical reality. The more we are attuned to our own soul, the more our soul can bridge those worlds, and it becomes natural to know life on a deeper level, and to know a more multi-dimensional expression of life.” – Ariana Garrett Dr. Amy Robbins says of Ariana Garrett, “I believe there is no one who could explain the Soul better than she could. There is no one who understood the soul better than she did. And there is no one who could help manifest sh*t faster than she could help manifest sh*t. She was magical where that is concerned.” Episode Summary: Today Dr. Amy Robbins shares very personal grief; her rocked faith, sadness, and vulnerability – after losing her mentor, teacher and friend – after losing her “Soul Mama”. Internationally renowned master energy therapist, spiritual life coach, and meditation teacher Ariana Garrett lost her earthly life to cancer in early August 2021. From a place of raw grief, Dr. Amy Robbins is grateful to share this tribute to Ariana’s wisdom, knowledge, soul and light. This timeless conversation originally aired in 2019. Enjoy. Topics We Discuss: The soul is the more transcendent aspect of yourself, your better self. Beautiful union of soul and personality on a spiritual path. Why Adriana uses “personality” (positive connotation) vs. ego (negative connotation) Consciousness as another word for soul, and subtle attunement to consciousness in everyday life. The souls purpose is always movement in the direction of love, creativity and presence. Death as a long, multi-step process, punctuated with choice points culminating with the last breath. Each individual’s transition (death) is unique, depending on how aligned vs. resistant the individual personality is with the process. Most deaths are positive experiences, with feelings of peace and bliss, a sense of coming home. How you die is reflective of how you’ve lived. Support Life, Death and the Space Between: Reimagine Death and Celebrate Life with Brad Wolfe and Dara Kosberg “Grief is like a Jackson Pollock painting.” – Brad Wolfe “There is room for art, music and even comedy in that sacred transition we call death.” Episode Summary: Have you ever thought about YOUR death? Really thought about it? In this episode, we literally talk about life, death and the space between with Brad Wolfe and Dara Kosberg from Reimagine. Reimagine is a non-profit founded by Brad Wolfe that draws on arts, design, and spirituality to transform culturally tabu attitudes around death and grief, to enhance how we live and how we die. Brad Wolfe has a Stanford MA in Sociology and a Berkley MBA, with a human design focus. Dara Kosberg has an MA in education from Stanford, and is director of programming at Reimagine. Listen in to understand how to transform the experience of your own death -- or the death of a dear one -- and ultimately find more meaning in your life. Topics We Discuss: Reimagine grew from the unlikely intersection between Death and The Arts – including Comedy! Comedy can crate openings to transform the experience of death, and diffuse the intensity of an end-of-life experience. Death shifts you into a new relationship with yourself. Especially during the isolation of COVID, people are looking for connection. For example, a widow hearing “yes, me, too” can create an intense, magical connection between people. Death being a hushed tabu is a modern reality! Ancient Greek cultures celebrated death. Ways to invoke Post Traumatic Growth. Finding the benefits of a tough experience. Leaning into how to go deeper. Seeing a positive growth framework to flourish. Building a community that wants to flourish by facing these hard things together; let’s dance with them! Transform the way we interact with each other, as individuals, and as a culture. Democratizing underrepresented voices in this arena through Justice Equity Diversity & Inclusion (JEDI) Focus on what matters in life – by being conscious of death. Thinking, “What if today is my last day?” Or, “What if this is the last time I see this person?” Mindfulness. S3 Ep 187Emotional Repatterning with Lisa Samet, ND

“We should all have the goal of emotional wellness. Because if we manage ourselves emotionally, we forestall a lot of physical disease that could be coming.” – Lisa Samet “Life is full of challenges, we will never get rid of those challenges. But we can navigate them better.” – Lisa Samet Lisa Samet, ND, is a well-known health practitioner who has appeared on the Dr. Oz show to promote homeopathy and naturopathic healing. She has an international practice based in Montreal, specializing in homeopathy, emotional wellness, nutrition and lifestyle optimization. Lisa Samet is the author of “Emotional Repatterning” (O-books.com). “Emotional Repatterning” provides insights, stories and real-life examples to deepen the reader's understanding of their own mind; the patterns of thinking and deep-seated beliefs that keep them feeling stuck and unhappy. Today we talk about: After working with patients extensively over the past 20 years, how feelings and emotions fit into her work as a naturopath; the mind-body connection. How emotional stress, or "wrong thinking" is responsible for not only great emotional suffering but oftentimes physical illness as well. You are not the victim of your genetics! Lisa’s personal experience with her youngest son’s mind blowing leukemia diagnosis, and the subsequent two year program of chemotherapy treatments in the traditional medical system. Her model of 8 spheres of emotion – what she calls “thinking traps” – which emerged from her practice: self-love, acceptance, responsibility, stories, cocreation, gifts, regret, and death. How death is not normalized in our culture, and because we don’t talk about it, it becomes a tabu topic. 5% of our awareness is conscious, therefore 95% is subconscious. Emotional Repatterning technique - akin to a software upgrade: 1) engage both the left and right sides of the brain, and then 2) replace long standing subconscious negative beliefs (often from childhood) like “I am not loveable” with more current positive beliefs like “I am a good person” or “I have great worth and value”. We then no longer see the world from such a distorted way. We see things from a more healed place, more clearly, where I know who I am. Emotional Repatterning typically takes a minute or two per belief that needs to be upgraded. S3 Ep 184What Would You Do on Your Last Day? with Alua Arthur

“Life only matters because we die.” – Alua Arthur “There is something absolutely miraculous about standing at the doorway of existence. I am absolutely humbled by it every time. Rather than it being heavy, there is a lightness of being that goes along with it because there is such a mystery to this human ride.” – Alua Arthur Alua Arthur is a death doula, attorney, adjunct professor, and ordained minister. Her goal is to bring grace and compassion to the cycle of life by planning for it and effortlessly tying up the loose ends. Going with Grace exists to support people when they answer the question, “What must I do to be at peace with myself so that I may die gracefully?”, and to support family members completing the affairs of their loved ones life after death. I am so excited to have Alua on the show today! Today we talk about: After 10 years as social justice attorney what triggered her transition to career path of death doula First, a literally accidental interaction with a young woman her own age facing death Next, helping a dear, close family member and her family walk toward his death, and the resulting grief and depression Then, deep dive into around the topics of death and dying Along with the heaviness and sadness of death -- there is also laughter, joy, tenderness, compassion; the juicy human emotions along with the difficult ones. The miracle of standing at the very doorway of existence. What she observes as death approaches: more difficulty interacting with the outside world, the life force diminishes, loss of appetite for food and drink, changes in skin. Often followed by a “death rally” just before death. We need a functional and cultural death literacy. Considering things like what happens to the body, finances, stuff, grief, what to say, what to do with leftover medication. We need Death Ed. How unlike as an attorney in court, she is able to cry with clients as a death doula Her organization Going With Grace – teaches how to surrender to the process of death. How death makes life more meaningful. Life only matters because we die. Swedish death cleaning – pairing things down, and holding onto only the essential stuff, considering someone needs to deal with your stuff after you are gone. Alua’s values to live authentically, boldly, as fully as possible. How one of these 365 days is our Death Day! We both talk about what we want our deaths to look like. S3 Ep 182Grief Dreams with Dr. Joshua Black

“The research has shown there are ways to improve dream recall. Some people say each dream is an unopened letter. But not all dreams are meaningful; we get a lot of junk mail.” – Dr. Josh Black, Grief Dream Researcher Dr. Joshua Black is a researcher in grief dreams, with a special focus on dreams of the deceased. Josh is one of the leading researchers in this field. In his research, Josh examines why some bereaved individuals dream of the deceased while others do not, the experiences of people’s grief dreams and how grief dreams help with grief recovery. This is my first interview on FiresideChat.com/amyrobbins. There were some technical hiccups, but we pulled it off! Our topics today: How overwhelming grief following his dad’s sudden death – then a transformative grief dream experience - led him to grief support, and ultimately dream research. Categorizes the various types of grief dreams: Dreaming of the deceased Imagery that reminds the dreamer of the deceased Other characters talking about the deceased Anticipatory grief dreams – where someone dreams of a death before it happens How a dreamer’s perspective differentiates a visitation from a dream. Dreams in general are more negative (which I never really thought about). But grief dreams tend to have a more positive bent. They can help the bereaved process the death of their loved one, or process their own experience of end of their own life. After the death of a loved one, the very high rates of grief dreams: 86% of spouses 78% of pet owners 58% after a miscarriage 55% of children dream of the deceased parent How to quickly increase your own dream recall, supported by research. S3 Ep 181Life in 20 Lessons with Chris Meyer

“Do epic shit every day.” – Chris Meyer Chris Meyer is a lawyer, filmmaker, funeral home owner and author of a new book, "Life in 20 Lessons: What a Funeral Guy Discovered about Life, from Death" is like "This is my Life" meets "Tuesdays with Morrie." Meyer spent 14 years in the funeral business assisting grieving families and in one case, the soon to be departed, in planning funerals. It was a life chapter he never intended to write, but he feels grateful for, given the impact the career detour had on him personally. In this beautifully lighthearted conversation we talk about: After being a lawyer, filmmaker, how the unusual “funeral guy” career came to pass – how the motivation for the career shift sprung from the birth of his son Job description of mortician, funeral director, funeral home owner… Funeral considerations - burial vs cremation, death certificates, embalming, preparation for visitation Intensity of dealing with families after a death – when emotions are high, and personalities are charged Psychological impacts of literally living and breathing death day after day, and how necessary it became to dissociate The difficulty compartmentalizing when a child had died After thousands of funerals, the most memorable eulogies were lives well lived - people with simple lives, who relished the smaller moments, lived in the present, lived with empathy and compassion for their elders, had great connections with family and friends A few of his lessons learned: make a few great friends, enjoy food, stop worrying about money, DEST - do epic shit today FOLLOW CHRIS MEYER instagram.com/ChrisMeyerAuthor facebook.com/ChrisMeyerAuthor Buy “Life in 20 Lessons, What a Funeral Guy Discovered about Life, from Death” wherever books are sold WAITLIST FOR COURSE dramyrobbins.kartra.com/page/waitlist FOLLOW DR. S3 Ep 180Reclaiming Ritual Healing with Ji Hyang Padma

“Hopefully we don’t believe everything we think.” – Ji Hyang Padma Ji Hyang Padma has combined an academic career with her vocation as a spiritual teacher. Ji Hyang served as Director of Spirituality & Education as well as a Buddhist chaplain at Wellesley College for fourteen years. Additionally, she has served as a meditation teacher at Harvard University, Boston University, Babson College, Esalen Institute and Omega Institute. Ji Hyang Padma currently serves as a chaplain at the University of California at San Francisco. Ji Hyang Padma is the author of the new book “Field of Blessings” (www.mantra-books.com April 1st 2021). “Field of Blessings” is a turning point, a revitalization of the healing arts in Western culture. Our conversation covers these fascinating topics: The premise of her book is to reclaim some of the nourishing resources forgotten as Buddhism crossed from the Eastern to the Western world, to reclaim the power of ritual healing and reconnect with the roots of mind-body medicine What healing looks like through the Buddhist lens - the mutuality and interconnected between consciousness and the body - or interaction between the limbic system and the brain How we use food, technology, and overwork to medicate the dis-ease in the body Mind-body practices that can help us reset the balance between the mind and body. For example, the practice of receiving the blessing of wellbeing can renew the body, and in turn can be used to echo those blessings out to the world Somatic re-experiencing work (reference Peter Levine) to heal trauma and PTSD in the body Personal healing and collective, societal healing are interdependent All of us are one body on the earth our sense of wholeness and our well-being depends on compassion, kindness and insight toward others; this enters into the collective field and brings about healing One universal element is relational empathy: relationship heals Healing the individual is healing the world Attachment Theory - The way we have experienced early life relationships affects our relationship to our physical body and all our close relationships (intimate and otherwise). When our early relationships are essentially trustworthy the limbic system and prefrontal cortex have a healthy connection. If our early relationships were dismissive/avoidant, then the information is blocked, body centered awareness does not develop well. Disconnection leads to dysregulation leads to dis-ease. Ritual is embodied narrative, and our way of making meaning, including: visualization, music dance, rhythm, poetry (reference Daniel Siegal relational neurology, interpersonal neurobiology) Chogas or rituals Setting intention Mindfulness Creating space Therapeutic attunement Evoking sacred power Changing awareness Reconnection with the natural world and community Five elements in healing Earth – groundedness, centeredness Water – emotions, confidence Air - clear mind Fire - action, assertion Space FOLLOW JI HYANG PADMA MountainPath.org “Field of Blessings” is available on Amazon, Kindle, Barnes and Noble and wherever books are sold www.mantra-books.com WAITLIST FOR COURSE dramyrobbins.kartra.com/page/waitlist FOLLOW DR. A link to the documentary “Beyond” based on this incredible book follows: https://www.beyondmedocumentary.org/en/watch-film-en/ Today we talk about ideas in “Beyond Us”: Differences between the thinking mind and human consciousness Infinite consciousness as the whole How to differentiate thought and intuition Intuition as an internal navigator His definition of “functional comparison” and how can it help us How humans are much like cells in a human body. Cells will eventually die to keep the human alive. Humans will eventually die to keep humanity alive. How we get “clogged up” in terms of our intuition – and how letting go clears us Anything that keeps us away from unconditional love is fear The essence of fear is resistance Shifting from a materialistic/dualistic world view (not our reality) into a idealism/nondualism (our reality) FOLLOW FRED MATSER FredFoundation.org www.iff-books.com https://www.beyondmedocumentary.org/en/watch-film-en/ WAITLIST FOR COURSE dramyrobbins.kartra.com/page/waitlist FOLLOW DR. Devastated by the loss, he needed science to tell him if she still existed in some form. In 2004 Bob and his wife Phran founded Forever Family Foundation (foreverfamilyfoundation.org), a global not-for-profit that educates the public about evidence that we are more than our physical bodies. Bob hosts the Signs of Life radio show, is past editor of Signs of Life Magazine, heads the foundation’s Medium Evaluation Certification Program, writes a blog at beyondthefivesenses.com , and is the author of “The Medium Explosion” (2020), a guide to navigating the world of those who claim to communicate with the dead. Bob and Forever Family Foundation are currently featured in the Netflix Series Surviving Death. “We try to bridge the gap between science and spirituality.” – Bob Ginsberg Today we talk about: How his wife’s precognitive experience predicted their young daughter’s tragic and sudden death, sparking Bob’s investigations, culminating in the global Forever Family Foundation, which has grown to over 10K members. The current phenomenon Bob calls The Medium Explosion, including how 85-90% of self-described mediums are not able to do what they claim. Medium Evaluation Certification Program processes:voluntary application, committee review, interview, readings scored against a minimum proficiency level. S3 Ep 164Life After Breath with Jacob Cooper

Jacob holds a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Jacob is also a Certified Reiki Master, Certified Hypnotherapist, and specializes in Past Life Regression Therapy. As a psychotherapist, Jacob works with individuals, groups, and families in managing emotional barriers, promoting improved wellness, and resiliency. Jacob incorporates mindfulness and a spiritual approach to focus on the connection between the mind, body, and spirit. In effect, this teaches individuals how to improve their cognitive processing and shift their perspectives. Based on his near-death experience and past life regressions, Jacob shares insight about the mystery of life on the other side of the veil. In addition to peace and euphoria in the afterlife, we also experience these feelings in the physical world; there is so much more to live for, as we are much more resilient than we imagine. Jacob’s experience also provides others with the opportunity to experience past-life memories, assisting in the development of self-awareness and finding meaning in their experiences. Jacob provides meditation and mindfulness seminars to individuals and groups diagnosed with cancer, with developmental disabilities, and the aged population. Jacob has presented at the Edgar Cayce Association for Research and Enlightenment (ARE), the International Association of Near-Death Studies (IANDS), spiritual centers, universities throughout the world, and public libraries. Jacob’s seminars promote healing for those grieving and those who seek to understand continuity of consciousness beyond the physical body, and for those with anxiety associated with the fear of life after death. He is the author of Life After Breath, a memoir on his near-death experience (NDE) published by Waterside Productions. Today we talk about: Jacob’s near-death experience NDE at only age 3, and how he recalls such great detail of his experience Growing up with this NDE experience, and how it shaped his life as being “in this world but not of this world” Other profoundly transformative out of body experiences FOLLOW JACOB COOPER https://www.instagram.com/jacobcooperlcsw/ https://www.facebook.com/Jacob-Cooper WAITLIST FOR DR. He served on the medical school faculty at the Universities of Michigan, Connecticut, and Virginia. He was a co-founder and President of the International Association for Near-Death Studies, and Editor of the Journal of Near-Death Studies. Dr. Bruce Greyson’s most recent book is After: A Doctor Explores What Near-Death Experiences Reveal about Life and Beyond (2021) “We’re not limited to what the physical body does. We have interactions that are going beyond the body. When you hate someone or are angry with someone or love someone, they can tell that, and it effects them whether you say it or act it out or not.” --- Dr Bruce Greyson Today we talk about: His journey starting from a strictly medical lens, and shifting to studying NDEs How NDE experiencers perceive time differently than the linear time we understand Cell phone metaphor as a way to differentiate the mind vs. the brain (caller’s voice vs. cell phone) Terminal lucidity where people with end stage dementia suddenly become coherent again Definition of consciousness How NDEs are spiritually transformative experiences, and how NDE experiencers universally report they no longer fear death, begin to live life more fully with meaning and purpose, and feel interconnected with others The common scientific theory that brain chemicals produce the NDE NDE experiencers report life reviews, knowing how they impacted others, and how they made others feel How inexplicably NDE experiencers interacted with those who had died, and brought back information they couldn’t have otherwise known. S3 Ep 161Surgeon or Shaman? with Dr. David Cumes

David Cumes, MD, was born and raised in South Africa and has been exploring ancient African wisdom for contemporary ideas on healing for some time. He has been initiated as an African shaman (sangoma or inyanga) and can testify personally to the value of their divining techniques, the powerful rituals and plant medicines, the altered states of consciousness induced by drumming and the diagnostic power of the bones. Dr. Cumes is committed to bridging allopathic (science-based, modern) Western medicine and ancient African healing wisdom. Western medicine has brought us many boons but there are glaring deficiencies as well. We focus too much on the intellectual, cognitive and scientific and too little on the intuitive, receptive, artistic, compassionate and mystical. Going back to our root or core self with the help of ancient African wisdom and Nature gives us not only an understanding of our origins but a clear perspective of a new and, at the same time, very old paradigm of healing unconfined to the space/time continuum. Wilderness is the Garden of Eden archetype and the ultimate source of all healing. The original sangoma medicine arose from the natural world and this healing medicine will never change. Today we talk about: How an African sangoma differs from shamans in other cultures Mysterious diagnostic power of “thrown” animal bones Western medicine’s drift away from traditional healing practices Integrating Western science-based medicine with African healing wisdom The challenge of bringing in traditional practices without western colonization How Western medical colleagues view Cumes’ bilateral approach FOLLOW DR.
