The 30: What is Kyle Kuzma's future with the Lakers? with Christian Rivas.
In this episode, Christian and Jas review Los Angeles Lakers forward Kyle Kuzma's season. To kick things off, the guys look back at how Kuzma performed throughout the year and touch on his lack of consistency off the bench. Then, Christian and Jas get into how Kuzma was at his best when he was played starter-type minutes. Following that, they look at where Kuz has improved his game since being drafted in 2018 and where he needs to grow if he wants to reach the next level in his career. To wrap things up, the guys get into how much the Lakers would have to pay to extend Kuzma long-term and give their predictions on if Kuz will be with L.A. two seasons from now. Let's appreciate LeBron's incredible season
LeBron James may not have been rewarded with the MVP award he was seeking for his efforts, but the year he just had for the Los Angeles Lakers was still an incredible and historic performance considering the context, and we aren’t ready to stop appreciating it just yet. So that’s exactly what co-hosts Anthony Irwin and Harrison Faigen did on the latest episode of the Silver Screen and Roll podcast. After starting out the show by having a little bit of fun with the latest video of Kostas Antetokounmpo soaking in his status as an NBA champion and discussing the latest reports on when next season might start — and how it could affect the Lakers — Harrison and Anthony moved on to discussing the incredible year that was for LeBron James, and why they think he can keep this going for years to come. The 30: How the Lakers bounced back from the Magic Johnson/Luke Walton era to become NBA champions. With Christian Rivas
In this episode, Christian and Jas look back at the windy road the Los Angeles Lakers took to become NBA champions. To kick things off, the guys discuss the 2018-19 season and how everything went off the rails after LeBron James got hurt during the Christmas Day game against the Golden State Warriors. Christian and Jas talk about how things looked bleak while Magic Johnson was running the show and if the franchise would have claimed its 17th championship if Johnson was still calling the shots. The guys also get into how Rob Pelinka's message of togetherness shined through as the Lakers played a relatively drama-free season. Then, the guys discuss Frank Vogel's demeanor and why his year away from the game helped him become the right coach for the team. To wrap things up, Christian and Jas touch on the Chris Paul to the Lakers rumors. Learn more about your ad choices. Should the Lakers even consider a Derrick Rose trade?
On the latest episode of the Silver Screen and Roll podcast, Anthony and Harrison discussed the latest rumors connecting the Lakers to Derrick Rose, where they think such reporting is coming from, and what the Pistons might want for him in a possible trade. They also discussed if we think Rose fits at all with this team and if a deal like this makes sense for the Lakers, which might be two entirely different questions. After that, Anthony and Harrison kicked off the audio version of our season in review series with a player who is in some ways tangentially related to those rumors: Talen Horton-Tucker, the only rookie on the Lakers’ full-time roster during their run to the title, and their only draft pick from the 2019 NBA Draft. If Horton-Tucker is capable of continuing to develop, he doesn’t make the acquisition of one-dimensional scorer like Rose completely pointless, but he does theoretically make it less necessary to give up assets to do so. To have that conversation, Anthony and Harrison invited a very special, fan-favorite guest and certified THT stan on to discuss. Learn more about your ad choices. The 30: Previewing the Lakers' offseason, how long will Anthony Davis and LeBron James be in L.A., which free agents should the Lakers bring back and which team will be the Lakers biggest challenger next season? With Christian Rivas
In this episode, Christian and Jas kick things off by discussing Anthony Davis' contract extension and what it might look like. Following that, the guys discuss which of the Lakers with player options they want back in the fold for the 2021 NBA season. Then, Christian and Jas get into why Kentavious Caldwell-Pope will be better off signing a one-year deal with the team before testing free agency next year and how the Lakers' big man rotation will look in 2021. After that, they talk about the Lakers who are on expiring deals and which of them should be brought back, plus why Markieff Morris is potentially the best buyout player of all time. The 2019-20 Lakers season has come to an end, and there’s no time like the present to relive the very best moments of this championship team. On the latest episode of “I Love Basketball”, Sabreena and Anthony pick their favorite memories from all of the non-superstar players on this team. Postgame Show: The Los Angeles Lakers are NBA champions
The Los Angeles Lakers dominated from start to finish on Sunday night in Game 6 of the NBA Finals, winning 106-93 to capture the NBA title. In one of their most dominant defensive performances of the season, Anthony Davis and the Lakers used a stifling defense to outscore the Heat 36-16 in the second quarter, including a 28-4 run to end the half, to come away with the win. LeBron James was named Finals MVP after notching yet another Finals triple-double on Sunday with 28 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists. Davis added 19 points, 15 rebounds and 3 blocks while anchoring a defense that surrendered just 58 points through the opening three quarters and held the Heat to 36.2% shooting from the field in that span. Playoff Rondo made one last appearance with 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting to go along with four rebounds and four assists. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope continued his strong Finals with 17 points. Anthony Irwin and Jacob Rude reacted to the Lakers winning their first title in a decade in the aftermath of Sunday's game. The two share what the win means to them personally after starting their writing careers in the middle of bad Lakers teams and also touch on what this season means to Lakers fans. The guys kick things off by breaking down the end of the game and why Danny Green disappointed Lakers fans again by missing a wide-open shot that could have won Game 5. Following that, Christian and Jas talk about LeBron James and his dominating performance where he almost led the team to a victory. Then, they get into how this was a really good game for Miami, while the Lakers played below the level of expectations. After that, Christian and Jas talk about how the Lakers' bench cost them this game and why it is important two-to-three of the reserves step up in Game 6. I Love Basketball: The 2019-20 Lakers made defense fun
On this episode of "I Love Basketball", Sabreena and Anthony reflect on how the Lakers bucked the trends of the modern NBA to create a defensive behemoth, one that managed to surprised the rest of the league. They go over why it's been so satisfying to root for a team like this, and how the front office deserves credit for zagging in its roster construction. Postgame Show: Jimmy Butler destroys the Lakers
Jimmy Butler was magnificent, brilliant, dominant, unstoppable and any other number of adjectives on Sunday as his 40-point triple double led Miami to a 115-104 win in Game 3 of the NBA Finals, pulling the Heat to within a game at 2-1. Butler's historic night saw him shooting 14-of-20 from the field and 12-of-14 from the line to reach 40 points while notching 13 assists and 11 rebounds in just the third 40-point triple-double in Finals history. The Lakers did little to help their cause on the night as they turned the ball over 10 times in the first quarter and 19 times in total on the evening, an encapsulation of their overall mindset. Anthony Davis found himself in first-quarter foul trouble and he was never able to find a rhythm on either end of the court, managing just 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting with five turnovers. LeBron James did himself and the Lakers no favors also, turning the ball over eight times. Poor shooting nights from Danny Green and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope offset great performances off the bench from Markieff Morris and. Kyle Kuzma as they each scored 19 points while hitting nine three-pointers. Ultimately, though, Butler and the Heat had all the answers down the stretch as Miami won each quarter on the night with their six-point advantage in the fourth their largest. Anthony Irwin and Jacob Rude touch on each of those topics in the postgame podcast while discussing why Davis' performance both likely cost him a chance at the Finals MVP and is what separates him from being the elite of the elite in the NBA. In this episode, Anthony and Jas breakdown the Los Angeles Lakers Game 1 win over the Miami Heat. To kick things off, the guys discuss why the Lakers turned things around after a slow start in the series opener and dominate Miami the rest of the way. Anthony and Jas then get into why L.A. is a terrible matchup for the Heat, despite Miami's strong play throughout the postseason. Following that, the guys talk about how NBA media members who took the Heat to win could get things so wrong, and the Lakers are heavy favorites to win the NBA title. Lakers, Explained: The problem with the depth discussion
Over the last day since the Lakers found out they would be playing the Heat in the Finals, there have been a lot of attempts to break down this series in a few different ways. One of them is trying to see which team has the most depth, which Harrison and Anthony think is a mistake in a few ways, and they broke down why. After that, Anthony had a question for Harrison: Why do people keep thinking Anthony Davis hasn't proven himself in the playoffs yet? They discussed a few reasons they think it might be happening, and why they think it's overblown. Finally, they wrapped up the show by laughing a bit at the Clippers and the Celtics. Talking Kobe, Shaq and the Threepeat Lakers with Jeff Pearlman
The current version of the Los Angeles Lakers is on a bit of a hiatus right now because of the Clippers’ choke job yesterday, so with them not playing until Friday, host Harrison Faigen (@hmfaigen) decided to go back in time a bit and talk to New York Times bestselling author Jeff Pearlman (@jeffpearlman) about his new book: “Three-Ring Circus: Kobe, Shaq, Phil, and the Crazy Years of the Lakers Dynasty.” The book dives into all kinds of crazy detail about that aforementioned dynasty, as well as the chaotic and fun years leading up to it, and how it all fell apart. It also is one of the most clear-eyed and candid pictures of the dysfunctional, insane and successful Kobe and Shaq relationship ever reported out, and so I wanted to talk to Jeff about what he learned over the course of reporting it out, what he took away from their dynamic and a whole lot more. Then, Anthony and Jas talk about Rajon Rondo's impressive series, and if he will be able to carry it over to the next round. Following the break, the guys discuss which team the Lakers should be hoping to play out of the L.A. Clippers and Denver Nuggets, who are heading into Game 7 in their series. Are the Rockets or Thunder a bigger threat to the Lakers?
With the Houston Rockets losing to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday night, the Los Angeles Lakers won’t know who they’re playing in the next round of the NBA playoffs until Wednesday night. So instead of previewing one opponent, our latest podcast has to dig in to two very different possibilities. But before they did that, hosts Harrison Faigen and Anthony Irwin took a moment to laugh at the Milwaukee Bucks showing their flaws in Game 1 of their second-round matchup against the Miami Heat, and rant a bit about how ridiculous NBA awards voting can sometimes look after the playoffs begin. Should we start to value those accolades differently historically as a result? Then, after a short break, Anthony and Harrison discussed the Lakers’ two possible second-round opponents. They got into which one they see as a bigger threat to Los Angeles, what the relative strengths and weaknesses of the Rockets and Thunder are in a series against the Lakers, how the teams fared against each other over the course of this season, and why they both think that a bit too much is being made of the threat level of both opponents (in particular the Rockets). Finally, Anthony got into his theory on the reason for this constant hyping of the Lakers’ opponents, and it actually makes quite a bit of sense. Especially when we just did this whole song and dance with the Portland “Best Eighth Seed Ever” Trail Blazers, and, well, we all saw how that one turned out. NBA player strike puts playoff future in jeopardy
On Wednesday afternoon, the Milwaukee Bucks decision to not take the floor for their scheduled Game 5 meeting with the Orlando Magic kickstarted a movement that quickly picked up steam the rest of the day. Within hours, the rest of Wednesday's playoff games, including the Lakers-Blazers Game 5 contest, were canceled as players across the league united in a strike. By night's end, a meeting with the players and coaches inside the bubble led to LeBron James, the Lakers and the Clippers to voting to boycott the remainder of the playoffs. With the league's Board of Governor's set to meet at 11 a.m. on Thursday, the same time as a second meeting between the players, the season's future seems in serious doubt. Anthony and Jacob got together after everything played out on Wednesday to talk through how the day's events unfolded and how we got to this point. They also discussed what's at stake for the players, how the onus is now on the owners to take action and why Wednesday was the pinnacle of the player empowerment era. The Lakers once again convincingly beat the Trail Blazers on Saturday night to take a 2-1 series lead over Portland, and host Harrison Faigen (@hmfaigen) was joined by Keith Parish of Fastbreak Breakfast (@fastbreakbreak) to discuss the series so far, and how the Lakers are doing. Were the Blazers overrated? How much should we make of the Lakers' struggles? How do the Lakers bounce back from Game 1 loss?
A little less than 24 hours removed from the Los Angeles Lakers 100-93 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday, the shock hasn’t worn off. As is the case with any playoff game, there were plenty of takeaways, most negative, from the defeat. Jacob and Anthony dive into the game and look to see where things went wrong for the Lakers aside from the obvious in their poor shooting. The team is due for a progression to the mean after a string of poor shooting performances in the bubble, but will that come before the team exits the playoffs? After missing open three-pointers as well as putbacks, do the Lakers need to change their offense or is it simply a matter of making the shots they’re taking? With JaVale McGee continuing to struggle, it also may be time to change the team’s starting lineup. Jacob and Anthony look at the possibilities with the rotation moving forward, ranging from starting lineup changes that include benching JaVale McGee to whether Dion Waiters should see more minutes. And with Rajon Rondo expected to return as soon as Game 2 in the series, where does he factor into the rotation? Learn more about your ad choices.
