I Love Basketball: AD is coming back, and not a moment too soon
The Lakers returned home (to fans!) from their seven-game road trip and unfortunately lost to the Boston Celtics despite the best efforts of Talen Horton-Tucker, Marc Gasol, and the deep bench in the fourth quarter. Sabreena and Christian delight in the exploits of those Lakers while placing the loss in some broader context about the team's place in the standings and their general fatigue factor. They then pivot to the big news of the day that Anthony Davis has been cleared for on-court activity and share their expectations for how the rest of the season could look for AD. The 30: Andre Drummond's offensive struggles, Frank Vogel deserves more praise and previewing Celtics-Lakers with Anthony Irwin
In this episode, Anthony and Jas kick things off by discussing Andre Drummond's offensive struggles and if it is a sign of things to come.. The guys then get into why Drummond has to alter his game when LeBron James and Antony Davis return to the lineup. Anthony and Jas then talk about why having Drummond and Gasol on the roster is a good problem to have for the coaching staff. Following that, Anthony and Jas share their thoughts on why Frank Vogel should be getting some consideration for the NBA Coach of the Year Award. The Lakers have been playing .500 ball since losing both their superstars and have remained one of the best defensive teams in the league, so Vogel deserves a ton of credit. To wrap things up, Anthony and Jas preview the game against the Celtics and how it nice will be to finally have fans back in attendance at STAPLES Center. Learn more about your ad choices. Lakers, Explained: Coby Karl on coaching in the G League, podcasting and more
After briefly arguing about Andre Drummond's value to the Lakers (0:00-18:40), hosts Harrison Faigen and Anthony Irwin threw to a more interesting conversation they recorded earlier in the day with South Bay Lakers head coach and former Laker Coby Karl (19:09-58:42), who is hosting a new podcast called “The Curious Leader with Coby Karl,” featuring guests like legendary Lakers coach Phil Jackson, team governor Jeanie Buss, current player Jared Dudley, and a whole lot more. So after Harrison and Anthony gave Coby a hard time about encroaching on their podcasting turf, they then jumped into some more serious topics. What is it like to manage all the different factors that go into coaching a G League team while building his own coaching philosophy? What makes connecting with players on a personal level so important to him? What have the Lakers had him and his coaching staff doing after choosing not to send a team to the G League bubble? What are his favorite stories about Alex Caruso and Talen Horton-Tucker? Does he remember the time that Harrison and Anthony did an interview with him and it didn’t record? What was it like to teepee Ray Allen’s house? They touched on all those topics and a whole lot more on our latest podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. I Love Basketball: Marc Gasol stays, and Andre Drummond returns
Sabreena and Christian dive into the ever-spinning roulette wheel that is the Lakers center position, starting with the news -- courtesy of Kyle Kuzma -- that Marc Gasol considered accepting a buyout from the team. Thankfully, Gasol did not follow through on that impulse, but Sabreena and Christian discuss how the Lakers got to this point via the signing of Andre Drummond. Has this latest stretch changed how comfortable the Lakers should feel offering Dennis Schröder a max extension? On the latest episode of "Lakers, Explained," co-hosts Harrison Faigen discussed that, if this brutal slump the Lakers have been in affects their opinion of Schröder's value -- or the value of any other members of the team -- as well as Paul Pierce getting fired from ESPN and Andre Drummond's thoughts on Easter Egg hunts. In this episode, Sabreena and Jas kick things off by discussing Woj's report that some NBA executives want changes made to how the league's buyout market works. Do teams like the Lakers and Clippers have an unfair advantage? Sabreena and Jas share their thoughts on why Adam Silver shouldn't make any changes to the current system. Following that, they get into Frank Vogel's plan to play Marc Gasol and Montrezl Harrell together and if Gasol will play meaningful minutes in the playoffs. I Love Basketball: How should we feel about the Lakers' trade deadline?
The Lakers played the Sixers Thursday and made the game more competitive than would have been expected, but after a brief Danny Green interlude, Sabreena and Christian are more interested in talking about the passage of the NBA trade deadline, and the team's general activity. They talk through the potential Kyle Lowry trade that wasn't and the Lakers' valuation of Talen Horton-Tucker. They then move on to the latest news from the buyout market regarding Andre Drummond and LaMarcus Aldridge before closing with the comments from Dennis Schröder about hitting free agency this offseason. Postgame Show: Life without LeBron James
Following LeBron James' injury on Saturday afternoon, the Los Angeles Lakers began life without their top two stars on Sunday night on the road against the Phoenix Suns. While the undermanned Lakers fought to the finish, the Suns came away with a double-digit win in what was likely a precursor for the weeks to come for L.A. Having taken the rough weekend for fans, Anthony and Jacob sit down to discuss the post-LeBron life in Los Angeles while recapping Sunday's game. They look at what positives could come from the Lakers not having James and Davis for the foreseeable future (not many!) and how the team might play without them. Then, they discuss whether the injuries change the Lakers' mindset heading into the trade deadline that is just days away. Should the team look for someone to help in the short term? Should they stand pat and only target buyout guys? After that, the two step back and look at the league in a bigger sense. James' injury paired with that of LaMelo Ball's leads the two to question whether the league is acting in the best interest of the players and just how much is at risk for the league this season. They discuss the condensed schedule, the rash of injuries this season to marquee players and connect the dots between the two. Finally, Jacob offers a preview of the upcoming game against the New Orleans Pelicans in a contest that now has an entirely different feel to it without James and Davis. In this episode, Jas is joined by Brian and Andy Kamentzky to talk all things Lakers. L.A. is 6-6 without Anthony Davis, the guys kick things off by discussing what has been the biggest issue without AD in the lineup. Brian and Andy then share their thoughts on why Montrezl Harrell and Kyle Kuzma have turned the corner recently. Following that, they get into which players the Lakers should target via trade of the buyout market and which available big men could come in and take Marc Gasol's place. Then, the guys get into which teams around the league would give the Lakers the most fits in a playoff series and how each contending team will do down the stretch. Lakers, Explained: Why it's basically impossible to trade for P.J. Tucker
The Lakers beat the Golden State Warriors on Monday night, and we’re ready to break it down. On the latest episode of “Lakers, Explained” — a podcast by Silver Screen and Roll — co-hosts Harrison Faigen and Anthony Irwin dove into the game. First, both hosts wanted to apologize to Montrezl Harrell for underrating what he brings at times. He showed his value against the Warriors, and has made progress on defense lately. Then they praised Kyle Kuzma after the latest sign of his own improvements against Golden State. How much juice those two are giving the Lakers right now cannot be overstated. After all that, in the second half of the show, Harrison and Anthony got into why the Lakers making a trade for P.J. Tucker — they’re rumored to still be talking to the Rockets — work is a lot less likely than them adding him in the buyout market because of how complicated a deal would be. Plus, is such a deal even a good idea? Harrison broke down all the crazy level of machinations that would be required to make a trade that isn’t 1-for-1 work to outline how hard it would be for Rob Pelinka and the front office to get it done. And that goes for Tucker, or any of their other rumored targets. Finally, the two wrapped up the show by getting you ready for the second night of the back-to-back against an awful Minnesota Timberwolves by trying to get Anthony to name their coach and starting lineup. He did better than Charles Barkley does in “Who He Play For?”, but only marginally so. You can follow Harrison on Twitter at @hmfaigen, and Anthony @AnthonyIrwinLA. Learn more about your ad choices. I Love Basketball: The All-Star Break has mercifully arrived
The Lakers played their final game of the first half of the season Wednesday and were down all three frontcourt starters plus Alex Caruso. It wasn't altogether surprising that the Lakers lost to the Kings in their absence, but Sabreena and Anthony still found reasons to enjoy the performance, both in the moment and for what it could mean going forward. Lakers, Explained: Are the Lakers at risk of losing Dennis Schröder or Alex Caruso?
While Dennis Schröder was out, the Lakers went 0-4. Since he’s returned, they’ve won two games in a row. While that isn’t grounds to campaign for him to win MVP, it does mean it’s time to appreciate how much he helps this team and how important he is, especially with Anthony Davis set to miss at least five more games. So on today’s episode of “Lakers, Explained," that’s exactly what co-hosts Harrison Faigen and Anthony Irwin did. Did they undervalue how important to this team Dennis is before? Is he really as helpful as he seemed to be on both ends? And why haven’t the Lakers extended his contract yet? They got into all that and more. But before they got to that, Anthony and Harrison wanted to address the latest free agency rumors about Alex Caruso, who reportedly may get offered the full mid-level exception. How much would Anthony and Harrison pay for Caruso, and do they think the Lakers will be able to keep both him and Schröder? They debated all that — and discussed the future of breakout Lakers star Damian Jones — and more on our latest show. You can follow Harrison on Twitter at @hmfaigen, and Anthony at @AnthonyIrwinLA. I Love Basketball: A Mock All-Star Draft
The Lakers were off today and haven't done anything newsworthy since releasing Quinn Cook, so Sabreena and Christian went a little off-book for today's episode. LeBron James is once again GM of Team LeBron for this year's All-Star Game, and the draft for the teams will be held on March 4. In anticipation of that event, Sabreena and Christian did a mock draft of this year's teams and give their best picks for this year's skills competitions. Learn more about your ad choices. Lakers, Explained: Time to hit the panic button?
The Lakers have lost four games in a row, with their 114-89 embarrassment against the Utah Jazz basically being two and a half quarters of garbage time following a mostly competitive first frame. Yes, Anthony Davis and Dennis Schröder have missed time, but this team shouldn’t be this bad, should it? That’s the question we tried to answer on our latest episode of the Silver Screen and Roll postgame show. Hosts Harrison Faigen and Anthony Irwin started out the show with the caveat that this loss was basically the same story as the last several, and that trying to glean any new analysis from it was basically an exercise in futility. What continued, however, were a few trends that have plagued the Lakers’ all season: Their horrible 3-point shooting, and their recent issue of allowing their opponents to hit too many threes of their own. Are either of those things reason for concern moving forward? To some degree yes, but Harrison also provided some context on last year’s team, and how this isn’t actually that big of a drop from the defending champs’ previous 3-point shooting woes. After discussing all that, Harrison and Anthony dove into the Lakers’ second-half schedule, and how tough of a slate they have coming up to round out their run to the playoffs. A run that will all come while the team is as tired as ever, and facing eight back-to-backs over their final 35 games to boot. Finally, they wrapped up the show with a plea for LeBron to consider taking it easy if things keep going this way, and for the team to make sure he stays healthy for the playoffs. The 30: Is LeBron James playing too many minutes? Why the Lakers are struggling without Anthony Davis and more with Anthony Irwin.
In this episode, Anthony and Jas kick things off by discussing the Lakers' recent 1-4 slide and what might be causing the downturn in their performance. The guys question if Frank Vogel should limit LeBron James' minutes and if it would be good to give him some time off during the season. Following that, they get into the Lakers' shooting woes and how the team can improve its offensive production. Then, Anthony and Jas discuss some of the Lakers that are struggling and why the team likely won't turn things around until Anthony Davis returns. The guys also share some quick thoughts on how the Wednesday game against the Utah Jazz could play out. I Love Basketball: Is the Lakers' shooting a problem?
The Lakers lost to the Brooklyn Nets 109-98 Thursday, and it was hard to take too much away from a game when the team was without Anthony Davis and lost Dennis Schröder right before game time, especially defensively. However, the Lakers struggled to shoot the ball from 3-point range yet again, continuing a dispiriting 10-game trend, and Sabreena and Christian spend some time talking about the offense and if there are any signs of concerns. I Love Basketball: Finding the positives during this win streak
The Los Angeles Lakers have won their last six games, which is now their longest streak of the season, but if you’ve been paying attention, it really doesn’t feel like they’ve been that good. Mostly because they haven’t. That’s why their last three took them at least one overtime to sort out despite playing against lottery teams. But impressive or not, the team still is winning, after all, and so on our latest episode of the Silver Screen and Roll podcast, host Sabreena Merchant was joined by our own Harrison Faigen to discuss the positives they've seen during what has been perhaps the least impressive winning streak ever. To start, they lauded the continued growth and development Kyle Kuzma, who has morphed into a very different player than the rookie that Lakers Twitter fell in love with, but deserves a ton of credit for so drastically changing his game in order to play winning basketball for this team. Then, after a short break, Harrison and Sabreena discussed Anthony Davis’ season, and what they want to see from him over the rest of this year when he gets back on the court (beyond just good health). We know how good Davis can be, but there are a few things he could stand to keep working on as the regular season continues. Finally, to wrap up the show, our hosts broke down their other two favorite positive parts of the win streak the Lakers have been on: The endless energy of Montrezl Harrell, and the resurgence of Wesley Matthews. The 30: The Lakers get a razor-thin win over the Thunder. With Anthony Irwin
In this episode, Anthony and Jas kick things off by breaking down the Lakers' ugly 114-113 win over the Thunder. This was the third-straight time the Lakers had to go to overtime against an inferior opponent. Is that a cause for concern? The guys share their thoughts on why fans shouldn't be worried about the previous three outings. Following that, Anthony and Jas get into why the Lakers' offense hasn't been as sharp without Anthony Davis and if that could be an issue come playoff time. They also discuss KCP's shooting woes and why he needs to get going for the Lakers to return to being the dominant team they were to start the season. Lakers, Explained: Is there anything to worry about right now?
The Los Angeles Lakers have won five games in a row, and eight of their last 10. They are half a game back of the best record in the NBA. So why has the discussion around them — on this site included — been so negative lately? On the latest episode of “Lakers, Explained” — a podcast by Silver Screen and Roll — co-hosts Harrison Faigen and Anthony Irwin debated that question, and then had the MVP conversation. Lakers, Explained: What is up with this team's defense?
After our last podcast covered the Lakers' wild win over the Atlanta Hawks and seven-day road trip, for today’s show, co-hosts Anthony Irwin and Harrison Faigen were joined by Mo Dakhil of Bleacher Report and The Athletic for their annual early season conversation to discuss the overarching basketball questions about this team as a whole. But first, Anthony needed to know: Why is Mo hating on the Lakers by dropping them down in his latest power rankings? Then Harrison was curious if Mo had ever had his own Courtside Karen experience during his days as an NBA and Australian national team video coordinator. After that, the three of them got into how the Lakers have played so far, and the outstanding production of Alex Caruso. But while the team has one of the best records in the NBA, but have also clearly coasted and/or struggled at times, both during their recent road trip and before. Is there anything there that concerns any of them long-term about the defending champs, and what is going on with the defense? Is it actually as good as the metrics suggest, and if so, why does it often look so poor when it goes wrong? Harrison, Anthony and (most importantly) Mo all have some theories about what is up with that end of the floor and a whole lot more. You can follow Harrison on Twitter at @hmfaigen, Anthony at @AnthonyIrwinLA, and Mo at @MoDakhil_NBA. You can read his latest power rankings here. Learn more about your ad choices.
