Beijing 2022: Olympics - Day -1

It's Day -1 to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, and the action is heating up (but the weather isn't). Jill didn't pack her recording microphone before she headed out of the hotel, so enjoy the ambience of the Main Media Center. She has been out to the two other competition zones: Yanqing and Zhangjiakou, both of which involve immense planning to get to, and both of which are cold. Very cold. Jill also went to the kickoff event of these Games: Mixed Doubles curling at the Ice Cube (formerly the Water Cube). Four games at once is kind of difficult to watch, but the play was exciting (although depending on the end, the British journalists often declared the Great Britain/Sweden game a "disaster." Great Britain won). Our first TKFLASTANI competed! Jill saw moguls skier Brad Wilson compete in the first qualifying round for the men's moguls competition. Will he be able to make the finals? Alison's got the scoop on the US women's first ice hockey game and a horrible break for our TKFLASTANI Brianna Decker. What officiating/volunteer job do we want? Which TKFLASTANIs are competing next? Listen to find out! If you'd like to read Jill's Beijing diary, join our Facebook Group (even if you have to make an account just for the Games). Want a transcript of this episode? Ep 224Book Club Claire on "Boycott"

Book Club Claire is back for our first book club session of 2022! Because of the cries from various Western countries (United States, we're looking at you) to boycott the Beijing 2022 and the ensuing diplomatic boycott by several of them, we wanted to look at the last US-led boycott of an Olympics, that of the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow. Claire leads us in a discussion of Boycott: Stolen Dreams of the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games by Tom Caraccioli and Jerry Caraccioli, which covers both the political side of the boycott, athletes' varied reactions to it, and what could've been. Did you know that the 1980 Olympics would've been the first time the US was represented by an African-American gymnast? True! We've also got some news from TKFLASTAN, including Olympic dreams realized for some of our TKFLASTSANIS who will be heading to Beijing, and dreams dashed for others. Plus, one TKFLASTANI is in limbo – our bobsledder Josh Williamson tested positive for COVID, but if he recovers in time, he could still potentially get to Beijing. Speaking of Beijing, we have details on the torch relay and the Opening Ceremonies – and it's almost time for Jill to hop on a plane to go there. Will she make it? Ep 212Modern Pentathlete Samantha Schultz's Tokyo 2020 Experience

We always love it when TKFLASTANIS come back on the show, so we're thrilled that modern pentathlete Samantha Schultz had some time to chat with us about her experiences in Tokyo. We talk with Samantha about competing in the heat, life in the Olympic Village (how were those beds?), and how the post-Olympic lows have been, as well as what's on tap for her future. Modern pentathlon's not known for making headlines during the Olympics, but Tokyo's women's competition did -- and sadly, not for a great reason. Annika Schleu, who was leading the competition going into the horse riding portion, had a horse that refused to jump partway through the competition. This led Schleu to visibly break down, and her coach also hit the horse on the rear, an action that's prohibited by the sport's rules. Schleu's medal hopes were dashed, the coach was sent home from the Games, and the international federation had a PR nightmare to clean up. The result is that the UIPM, the federation, annouced this week that after Paris 2024 (which will see a shortened 90-minute modern pentathlon), the riding portion will be replaced by a sport yet to be determined. All of this is in hopes that the event will be included on the sports program for LA 2028. This news has caused quite a stir with many of the sport's athletes, and we talk with Samantha about her thoughts on what riding means to the modern pentathlon. Throughout 2021 we're revisiting great stories from Atlanta 1996! For our Atlanta 1996 moment this week, Alison tells us all about the waving men. We also have news from TKFLASTANIS of Team Keep the Flame Alive, including: Jacqueline Simoneau Connor Fields Ness Murby Ginny Thrasher McKenna Geer Phil Andrews We have an update on the Raven Saunders podium protest at Tokyo 2020, with a decision as to whether or not she should receive sanctions. Also, we have news from Beijing 2022, or really, the lack of it where foreign journalists are concerned. Will the organizing committee allow foreign press access to venues and pre-Games events as they initially said they would? Will the IOC ensure this happens. We discuss the implications of the organizing committee's actions on the global interest of these Games. And, in time for the 1000 days out from Paris 2024, the IOC has launched a global store! Ep 210"Next Olympic Hopeful" Bobsledder Josh Williamson Returns

All of our TKFLASTANIS are very dear to us, but Citizen #1 will have a special place in our hearts. Bobsledder Josh Williamson, winner of the first season of Team USA's "The Next Olympic Hopeful" was our first interviewee, and now he returns, on the cusp of fulfilling his "Next Olympic Hopeful" goals and making it to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. We catch up with Josh and learn how he's approaching this season, what it's like to become a veteran in the sport, and what the bobsled track at Beijing is like (POV video here). Follow Josh on Twitter and Insta In our history moment on Atlanta 1996, Alison dives into maybe the most controversial phrase that came out of Juan Antonio Samaranch's mouth during the Games. Also on tap, we've got news from TKFLASTAN, including updates on Evan Dunfee, Dawn Harper Nelson, Connor Fields and Stephanie Roble. In our Beijing 2022 update, the Olympic Flame is officially lit and has traveled to Beijing, though not without controversy. The Torch Relay, of which there are few details, includes the inspiring slogan "Health, Joy and Energy." Alison is not impressed by Jill's attempts to spruce that up. And we have news from Milan-Cortina 2026, in which we are completely unsurprised to learn of venue changes due to cost containment needs. The Games aren't even for another 4+ years, but maybe it's a good thing that they've figured this out now. Thanks so much for listening, and until next time, keep the flame alive! Tokyo 2020 Paralympics: Day 10

CORRECTION: In the women's wheelchair basketball competition, we said the US defeated China 41-36, when in fact, China won this game. China will face Netherlands for the gold medal. The US will play Germany for the bronze. We regret this error. It's Day 10 of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, which means the team events are starting to wind down. But, the competition's heating up! We've got all the action on the day's events, who was soggy and who stayed dry, and (as always) some thoughts on today's television coverage, which almost makes us miss Mike and Maya.
