The biggest ever Mr Price store opened its doors at the Carlow Shopping Centre this (Thursday) afternoon. With 35 staff, the store will provide a welcome boost to the area, breathing new life into a previously vacant retail unit at a time when many retailers are scaling back. A documentary capturing the experiences of a Carlow-based aphasia support group will be screened at the VISUAL Arts Centre on Sunday, April 26th. The film will feature the 12 members of 'Talking Heads', each of whom is living with aphasia, an acquired language disorder which affects approximately a third of all stroke survivors. Carlow's VISUAL Arts Centre and George Bernard Shaw Theatre will be fully decarbonised in a €1.5 milllion project, which will include the installation of modern heating and ventilation systems. Carlow County Council and the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland are co-funding the project, with Aramark Energy Ireland appointed as the lead design team. At the February meeting of the Piltown Municipal District, its Chair, Cllr Pat Dunphy (FG) raised a series of road-related issues affecting South Kilkenny, some of which have persisted for decades. From the Abbey Road in Ferrybank to the Rathkieran and Roadstone Junctions on the N24 and the problematic section of the N24 entering Mooncoin from the west (Carrick-on-Suir), Cllr Dunphy has found himself raising several of these matters month after month, year after year. Following the meeting, Cllr Dunphy spoke to KCLR News' Dermot Keyes about his frustrations and stressed why he needs to keep beating a drum on all of these matters.

Speaking to KCLR News, Piltown Municipal District Chairman Cllr Pat Dunphy (FG) made an appeal to the public to stay off the pedestrian bridge over the River Lingaun on the Kilkenny/Tipperary border at Killonerry after a section of the bridge recently gave way.

A pier on the pedestrian footbridge over the River Lingaun linking Counties Kilkenny and Tipperary has collapsed, making the bridge unsafe for public use - and may well be condemned in the coming weeks. However, the February meeting of the Piltown Municipal District was told that people continue to use the bridge, which forms part of the 104-kilometre South Leinster Way, much to the concern of local political representatives, including Piltown MD Chair, Cllr Pat Dunphy (FG). South East Technological University (SETU) has launched its Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) (Hons) in Home Economics. The programme is the first of its kind in the southeast region that gives students the opportunity to study home economics at degree level alongside an additional minor subject from arts and humanities. Kilkenny's Fire Service has introduced Ireland's first purpose-built electric fire vehicle. The two-seater appliance was delivered last week and is now based at the city's Fire Station at Jamesgreen. This new vehicle will deliver a more effective emergency response and enable the service to respond to incidents on the city's narrow laneways in a more immediate manner. John Masterson spoke to KCLR News' Dermot Keyes in Freshford, a village which has experienced more than its fair share of flooding down through the years.

While Freshford escaped the worst of Storm Chandra this week, the North Kilkenny village has experienced a range of flooding incidents over the years, including last November, 2022, and three separate floods in 2018. That same year, the then Government committed €3.8 million for flood relief works in Freshford, one of six projects announced for County Kilkenny, which also included Inistioge, Thomastown, Graiguenamanagh, Ballyhale and Piltown. Yet those substantial works have yet to be delivered, much to the frustration of local Councillor Michael McCarthy (FF) who spoke to KCLR News' Dermot Keyes earlier today.
