The KCLR Daily: opinion on proposed enhancement of St Mary's Lane
Kilkenny County Council has proposed an enhancement of St Mary's Lane in the city centre, a busy pedestrian route which links High Street to Rose Inn Street and Kieran Street. The renewal of the pavement would account for local drainage systems, boundary treatments, street furniture, public lighting and feature lighting. Soft and hard landscaping works are also included in the proposal, which would serve to improve the outdoor amenity space around the Medieval Mile Museum. This take existing hardstanding and gravelled areas into account, along with historic and modern paving and burial grounds which contain historic headstones and carved tombs. A serviced caf´é kiosk would also be installed just off the laneway, along with what the Council describes as "the pedestrian gate adjacent to the Tholsel". Prior to a public consultation session which Kilkenny County Council held at the River Court Hotel on Friday, January 12th, KCLR's Dermot Keyes sought the views of local traders and pedestrians about the future of St Mary's Lane.

KCLR News: Views on Mercosur and modern farming from Kilkenny Mart (9th Jan 2026)
The Irish Government will not support the EU's Mercosur trade deal with South America, with Tánasite Simon Harris in touch with The KCLR Daily yesterday (Thursday, 8th Jan) to confirm the coalition's position. However, given the supportive noises made by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni about the deal earlier this week, it would now be a huge surprise if the agreement failed to reach the qualified majority of Member State votes required to rubber stamp a deal that's been 25 years in the making. Shortly after we heard from Simon Harris, KCLR's Dermot Keyes made the short trip to Kilkenny Mart at Cillín Hill to get the views of local farmers and Mart CEO Michael Lynch about both Mercosur and general farming life, and this package kicks off with Dermot in conversation with Michael Lynch.

THE KCLR DAILY: A vox-pop on driver behaviour (8th Jan 2026)
Road safety has become a major area of public debate once again following a year in which 190 people died on Irish roads following 179 fatal road collisions. During the past hectic holiday month, 18 drink and drug driving offences were detected by Kilkenny Gardaí alone, which suggests that the plea for greater driver responsibility is sadly falling on many deaf ears. As part of the road safety remedy that's set to be rolled out locally, a new and free car parking site for those carpooling for work will be piloted on a site in either Carlow or Kilkenny adjacent to the M9, as local TD Peter 'Chap' Cleere told KCLR earlier this week. With both this development and driver behaviour in mind, KCLR's Dermot Keyes sought out the views of motorists at the busy Paulstown Service Area, just off Exit 7 at the M9, where his first interviewee was Peter Fowler, a well-known County Kilkenny-based caterer.
