Dear friends and fam,Join me as I reflect on a book I finished reading last year via this short post. I say read, but what I really mean is listen to, as audiobooks are how I consume most books these days. The book I speak of is Anna Karenina, a classic work of literature written by the Russian author Leo Tolstoy. Who is Anna Karenina? She’s a married woman in aristocratic Russian society who falls in love with a young officer named Count Vronsky. Through Anna’s life story, Tolstoy explores themes of love, desire, societal expectations, and the consequences of going against established norms. It’s a cautionary tale about the destructive power of passion and the challenges one must face from defying societal conventions. (Spoiler Alert!)The novel starts with Anna taking a train from St. Petersburg to Moscow to visit her brother whose marriage is falling apart due to his infidelity. On the journey, Anna meets Count Alexei Vronsky and there is an instant spark between them. When Anna returns to her husband, a high-ranking government official, the encounter with Vronsky continues to linger in her mind and makes her feel discontent with her current loveless marriage. Anna also has a young son, Sergei, who makes her feel torn between her duty as a mother and a wife and her passionate desire for love and fulfillment.Eventually, Anna surrenders to her feelings and begins a scorching affair with Vronsky. The affair does not stay secret for long and leads to Anna getting socially ostracized. She leaves her husband for Count Vronsky permanently, however she is unable to get a divorce and loses custody of her son to him.Anna's mental and emotional state further deteriorates due to greater scrutiny and societal pressure on her for engaging in the affair as compared to Count Vronsky. She becomes increasingly jealous over Vronsky's interactions with other women leading to arguments which strain their relationship. In a state of desperation from the consequences of her affair, Anna makes a tragic decision to end her life. She throws herself in front of a train, bringing her story to a devastating end. Anna is such a complex and multidimensional character because in addition to a detailed account of the events that unfold, Tolstoy also describes her internal thoughts, emotions, and motivations. On the one hand, Anna could be seen as morally questionable and selfish for betraying her husband and disrupting her family. However, I could empathize with her feeling trapped in an unhappy relationship while yearning for love and fulfillment because Tolstoy offered a broad portrayal of her complex inner psychology. The other major character of the novel is Konstantin Levin, a wealthy landowner who lives in the Russian countryside and is deeply committed to his work on the land. He arrives in Moscow to propose to Kitty Scherbatsky, but she rejects him in favor of Count Vronsky. Feeling heartbroken and devastated, Levin retreats to his rural estate to focus on his agricultural work.During his time away from Kitty, Levin experiences a period of self-discovery and introspection by delving into questions of faith, morality, and the meaning of life. Unbeknownst to Levin, Kitty's relationship with Vronsky crumbles, as Vronsky leaves her to go to St. Petersburg to pursue Anna. Upon hearing that Vronsky is no longer in the picture, Levin travels to Moscow to find Kitty.During their reunion, Levin and Kitty have a playful and nearly wordless encounter. Using chalk, Levin writes the first letters of each word to express his thoughts and feelings. Amazingly, Kitty understands him perfectly and responds the same way. Through this unique form of communication, they admit their love for each other and Levin proposes again. This time Kitty accepts. Despite the absence of spoken words, their deep connection transcends verbal language as they both communicate with and understand one another on a profound level beyond the limitations of spoken words. This pivotal moment in Levin and Kitty's relationship, showcases love, reconciliation, and the potential for growth and happiness in relationships. It is a contrasting and uplifting narrative that serves as a counterbalance to Anna's struggles.The remainder of Levin and Kitty's story is about the challenges of building a life together as they move to Levin's estate to start a family. Personally, I could relate to Levin more than any other characters because he embodies emotional depth, vulnerability, and a strong sense of individuality. He wears his heart on his sleeve and is willing to embrace his emotions which I relate to because I also find it hard to remain stoic and suppress or hide my feelings when they arise. Furthermore, Levin is an independent thinker who uses first principles to guide his search for meaning. I appreciate this character trait as I also resist relying on authority to form an opinion. In Part 3A of my autobiography, I recounted my experiences of moving to Moscow in 1997 when I was just 9 years old. My family had left Armenia in search of better economic prospects and ended up in Russia after a short unsuccessful stint in Ukraine first. Russia in 1997, led by Boris Yeltsin, was one year removed from the end of the First Chechen War which caused a significant influx of immigrants to Moscow. While these immigrants could have been seen as a positive addition to the labor force, filling low-paying and physically demanding jobs in sectors with labor shortages, they were instead viewed as a security threat and blamed for various societal problems, such as economic instability, political unrest, and corruption. As a result, my family and I faced discrimination and prejudice for not being ethnically Russian, even though our skin color was not all that different from the locals. Less than a year after we moved to Moscow, a financial crisis was brewing. I vividly recall the sudden shift in the exchange rate between the Russian ruble and US dollar. Initially, one could exchange six rubles for a single dollar, but within a short period, the rate shot up to nearly thirty rubles to a dollar. This would become known as the "Ruble Crisis'' of 1998. Although I was only 10 years old, even I could reason that those who had saved money in rubles suddenly found that their savings were worth much less than before. To make matters worse, there were a series of terrorist attacks in Moscow and other cities in 1998 and 1999, including bombings in a subway station, a shopping center, and an apartment building, all labelled as being perpetrated by Chechen separatists. The Russian government responded with a crackdown on all immigrants of non-Russian ethnic descent, leading to increased military operations and a visible military presence in the city. I saw military officers with assault rifles regularly patrolling the Moscow subway stations at this time.The terrorist attacks also led to the start of the Second Chechen War in the summer of 1999, as Russian forces launched a major military campaign in the Chechnya region. A month after the start of the war, there was yet another bloody apartment bombing in Moscow, killing hundreds, which escalated the conflict and led to increased support for the war among the Russian population. There was no transparency in the bombing investigation however, leading many people to question the validity of the claim that it was done by Chechen separatists. As a kid who had never lived in anything other than apartment buildings, I remember specifically thinking about the chances of my building being bombed next rather than wondering who really did it. As already mentioned, Boris Yeltsin was the President of Russia through most of the 90s but on New Years Eve of 1999 he unexpectedly resigned from power citing health issues, marking the end of an era in Russian politics and paving the way for the rise of Vladimir Putin. If anyone is old enough to remember Boris Yeltsin, you probably remember him for his public displays of drunkenness. Even I, as a young boy, saw some of these clips on TV and knew this about him. So it’s not difficult to imagine that he truly was unhealthy and could not continue to act as President. On the other hand, Russia was facing high inflation, unemployment, and a sharp decline in living standards because of the Ruble Crisis in addition to a new kinetic military campaign in Chechnya, so it’s also plausible that he did not wish to face these challenges while managing conflicts with the parliament, the military, and other powerful groups in Russian society. Regardless, after nearly a decade in power he stepped down and let Prime Minister Vladimir Putin take over as acting President. Three months later in March of 2000, Putin was elected President with a majority vote. Thankfully, my family would emigrate away from Russia 7 months later in October while the country would remain at war with Chechnya under the direction of Putin till 2009, nearly a decade later. Putin himself remains in power to this day, significantly outlasting his predecessor Yeltsin by more than a decade. And of course I don’t have to remind anybody that he has also started a new military campaign in Ukraine.So how did my family manage to escape to Canada? With the economic and geopolitical struggles of Russia in addition to the ethnic discrimination we would continue to face, my parents decided that we had to keep moving somewhere else. Fortunately Canada's immigration policy in the late 1990s was focused on attracting skilled individuals with a "Skilled Worker Points System." In Part 2 of my autobiography, I described a brief period of my life, lasting about three months, during which I lived in Ukraine in a cramped apartment with extended family. Although the stay was short-lived, the impact it had on my worldview was significant in comparison. It was the first time I had moved away from the country I called home, Armenia. I was struck by how other places could be more developed than what I was used to in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. One easy example for an eight-year-old child to understand was the difference in public transport, which we used frequently. The subway system in Kiev was larger, older, and more elaborately designed than the one in Yerevan. Despite all that, we did not settle in Kiev because no opportunities were available as even official registration to legally work was not granted. Thus, in the summer of 1997, we boarded a plane for the second time that year, having never experienced air travel during my first eight years of life. After a three-hour flight, we landed in Moscow, Russia, where we were greeted by another uncle and cousin duo. Moscow, being the center of politics and business, was relatively stable compared to other regions of Russia. This stability attracted many immigrants from other former Soviet republics, but this influx of diversity was not always well received by some Russians who used discriminatory rhetoric, claiming that immigrants were taking away their jobs. Amidst the influx of immigrants, tensions were also high in Moscow, as it had only been a year since the end of the First Chechen War. Immigrants of all ethnic backgrounds were often falsely assumed to be Chechen and living in the city illegally, putting them at risk of deportation. Despite the challenges of obtaining legal documents such as residence and work permits, immigrants were still often extorted for bribes under the guise that they were "Chechen spies." Those who refused to pay the bribes faced the possibility of being detained and spending significant time in jail while their permits were "checked”. My parents would often take precautions such as walking several feet apart in order to avoid being stopped together and having to pay a larger bribe per person in case they were detained. Some of the challenges and discrimination faced by my parents were reflected in my own experiences in school. I faced discrimination from both students and teachers who held prejudiced attitudes towards non-ethnic Russian students, particularly those from the North Caucasus region, which includes Chechnya. Even though Armenia is located in the South Caucasus region, we were all grouped together and treated with equal disdain. My Russian literature teacher even went so far as to tell my parents that I was undeserving of an A grade, as other Russian students didn't perform well enough to earn it, and that I could only be ranked equal to or below them. Despite what she said, I was not discouraged and made significant progress in reading and writing in Russian and even improved my handwriting which was the low hanging fruit she could point out to justify a lower grade. By the end of my second school year in Moscow the same Russian lit teacher had no choice but to give me an A grade as I had not given her any grounds for complaint of any sort. I learned a handful of important life lessons from that experience which had a big impact on the development of my personality. First and foremost was the lesson of consistency and long term outlook. I had to have a multi year strategy of gradual improvement to convince my teacher I was worthy of an A. That was also my first real encounter with the power of proving people wrong. Not only is it the best fuel for motivation but it can also lead to surprising outcomes as that discriminatory teacher ended up regarding me as one of her favourite students probably because I was actually engaged in her class to earn a high grade. With regards to discrimination from students, ultimately it wasn’t that bad. The worst I had to face was some name calling and on rare occasions the threat of a fight which never actually materialised. While I was a small kid growing up, I always displayed a level of athleticism when playing outdoor sports which made the bullies think twice about using me as a punching bag. I would also sometimes memorise funny comeback lines from movies and TV shows to say back to bullies when they tested me out. It was a good defence technique that made me a less appealing target for bullies, who often sought easier prey. I still had a handful of friends but the ease with which I was able to make friendships in Kiev was lost in Moscow. The challenge was compounded by the fact that I lived far from my school, requiring an hour long daily commute by bus each way. Managing that as a nine and ten year old by myself without any issues was a valuable experience for developing a strong sense of self-reliance and independence at a young age. With regards to
