Sage Hanner is a West Texas A&M University alumni, a former member of the WTAMU equestrian team, and found herself with an internship opportunity at the San Antonio Rodeo in 2013! Sage just wrapped up her 10th rodeo- nearly a decade of being a part of the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, and a part of a great group of people. Agriculture, horses, and the importance of education has always been a part of Sage’s life, so it was only natural for her to want to jump in head first with the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo and their mission to develop the youth of Texas by funding scholarships and educational programs! The mission of this organization runs deep, and the heart and passion of all of the people that come together to see this through is something that stands out across the nation!The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo has just completed their 74th consecutive rodeo! There is literally something for everyone to do here at the San Antonio Rodeo, and all of the extensive planning and organizing is something that the Volunteer groups take seriously! Breakaway Roping has been a great addition to the San Antonio Rodeo! In 2019, they started producing the Open Breakaway Roping Jackpot, and it was a huge success! Lynn Rodriguez is originally from post falls Idaho, but now calls home Hermiston, Oregon. She started on a rodeo scholarship in Blue Mountain and never looked back!As a 3rd generation rodeo cowgirl, rodeo runs deep in her roots! She never knew anything different than rodeo and roping. Her grandpa is someone that Lynn gives a lot of credit to, “he not only was a good roper but he loved the Lord and loved his family,” Lynn says, “he loved to rope but wanted to provide for his family, and that was something that he wasn’t willing to sacrifice.” He not only instilled strong morals, family ties, and work ethic into Lynn, her grandpa also shared his love with her of rodeo and roping!Lynn is a very accomplished woman in and out of the rodeo arena. Her husband Ben is a huge part of her life, not only her best friend and biggest fan, but her husband, father to their daughter Olivia, and a man who stands beside her and encourages her on every path that she takes. Lynn contributes a big part of her success to her family members, and friends, who all help her on her journey to breakaway roping. Lynn talks about her conversion from team roping to breakaway roping. From body position, to scoring, to riding, to her ropes, tip control, and more, and how she just kept working at it. Lynn talks about being a roper at a different phase in her life, and as the seasons change, so do her priorities. She is a mom first, then a wife, and a career woman! “As much as I had in my mind what my life was going to look like, God had a plan, and it was different than what I thought it looked like. My path is a lot different than what I had thought, but I think for me, you have to go down your path, knowing your priorities,” Lynn says, and she lives it everyday. Her biggest thing is family and marriage. Tibba Smith came from a ranching family from Hobbs, New Mexico. Tibba has always been around horses, and the cowboy way of life with her family, and her roots run deep. From a young age with her two sisters, Tibba has had a rope in her hand as long as she can remember. From roping on the ranch, to breakaway roping, and team roping, Tibba just loves to be around everything in the western way of life. Not only is Tibba a full time roper, and a mom to Shane Smith, she also has two full time jobs. Tibba is the Southwest Region Rodeo Secretary, as well as an insurance adjuster as well. Tibba talks about how she is working to financially make it all work for her, her son, and to make all of her dreams come true! Tibba and I talk about her past year, and one of her major highlights as the Rope Futurities of American Breakaway Roping Slot Champion. She explains the RFA format, and talks about her experience riding a 4 year old that has never been competed on, and roping strong calves with a long start. John and his wife Sandy Gwatney have always been a team in and out of the arena. Not only are they a great team behind the chutes and the production side of the industry, but they also were a team as competitors in the arena. When John competed his main event was in bull dogging, and Sandy was his right hand lady, who hazed for John. The dynamic duo has been together ever since, and have a true heart for the sport of rodeo.Behind the chute of the breakaway roping world, you don't always notice the people who actually make the rodeo events happen. Looking at the rodeo from a production standpoint, there are a lot of different perspectives and expectations to be fulfilled that just showing up and competing. John and I talk about the rodeo production as a whole with all 8 events, including breakaway roping. Treating each event fair, giving all of the contestants the best opportunity to compete on a fair scale, and working with the production time limit is a job that is not an easy task, but one that John takes pride in doing. Martha Angelone is a Virginia native now converted to Texan and is now the 2022 World Champion Breakaway Roper! Martha joins us on in the LOOP to go back and tell her story, from her childhood rodeo days, through the college ranks, amatuer rodeos, and now the professional rodeos as a full time breakaway roper! Martha tells her story from the beginning, from riding English Horses and doing English Jumping Competitions, to roping with her Dad and sister. Martha had a lot of success in all of the rodeo events through high school, and that opened doors for college! She has always wanted to rope for a living, and couldn't wait to get the opportunity, so she loaded up everything that she had, and headed south for college! Martha showed up in Texas with a 1500 Dodge Truck and a bumper pull trailer, one horse, and herself! When Martha was in college she had 3 full time jobs, went to school, and roped everyday, “It's not where you come from, it’s how hard you work.” Martha says. Martha started off in Alva, Ok then went to Altus, Ok and finally finished her degree at Weatherford College in Weatherford, Texas. After college Martha just kept working hard, training her own breakaway horses, and going to every roping that she could get to! Martha talks about how surreal it was to even think that she never dreamed that 3 years ago she would be able to travel full time down the rodeo road and call “Breakaway Roping” her full time career. We talk about her professional breakaway roping career from making the inaugural 2020 NFBR Finals in Arlington, Texas at Globe Life Field, to Las Vegas in 2021, and 2022! Martha is truly a humble competitor, who has stayed true to her roots, and her love of roping. The future of breakaway roping is so bright on the horizon with all of the little girls around the world dreaming of becoming the next World Champion Breakaway Roper! Emmry and Lilly Edwards talk about all of the special things that they love about breakaway roping, horses, practice sessions, competitions, and so much more. This event is truly something special, and the heart of the production comes from Jill and Travis Edwards. In 2022 the Edwards grew their breakaway roping event by 125%. There were over 100+ little girls that competed in the Something Special Breakaway Roping this year! There are so many people who have jumped on board and that have been involved as sponsors and supporters of growing this event! Natasha’s passion for the western industry, ranching, and rodeo comes from a deep love of the Western Industry! She has experienced first hand the injuries that can result from the western way of life, having a horse accident that left her with a lot of obstacles to overcome from a broken back from the L1-4,and the C6, Kidney damage, as well as a head injury. The doctor advised that her time riding horses was done, and to be grateful that she was alive, but Natasha wasn't going to accept that final outcome. "I just Love to win" ~ Taylor Hanchey Taylor Hanchey is the currently the only woman to qualifier in the NFR in two of the women’s events, barrel racing and breakaway roping. This will be Taylor’s second consecutive NFBR qualification, and she is defiantly committed to getting better each and every way. Taylor is the definition of a competitor, in and out of the rodeo arena. Taylor is very thankful for both of her horses that have taken her to the winners circle; Pam Pam and Cat-man. Taylor talks about her year and how she went home after the 2021 NFBR and got to work on her breakaway roping. Her husband, Shane Hanchey, is always her biggest fan and in her corner in all things. Jordi Edens is a first time National Finals Breakaway Roping Qualifier and she is very excited and confident about going to Las Vegas. Jordi was the high money earner over the 4th of July run and got her momentum rolling to start off her summer strong. Jordi finished the year off at Puyallup, WA at the NFR Playoffs, and it was “just like a fairytale year for me,” she says. She is quick to give a lot of credit to her parents, Tommy and Lori Edens, for all of the help from entering, traveling, taking care of her horses, and encouraging her to stick it out all year long. Jordi is one of the younger girls, making the NFBR at the age of 20, and is very confident about roping at Las Vegas! One of her biggest accomplishments of 2022 was that her horse, Baybe Bullet “Baybe”, won horse of the year in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association, Breakaway Roping Horse of the Year! Cheyanne Guillory has clenched her second strait NFBR Qualifier title, and is making another trip this year to Vegas! Cheyanne is a Louisiana native who now calls Oklahoma home. Cheyanne talks about her year which was full of victories and adversities, some horse changes, and a lot of miles traveled! Cheyanne split the win at San Juan Capistrano, California this year with Joey Williams, and finished strong in the Northwest. Gianna Cianfichi-O’Day | Cal Poly Graduate| Civil Engineer | Breakaway RoperGianna Cianfichi O’Day has gone full force into her rookie year of 2022 in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association Breakaway Roping. From talking about breakaway roping, breaking down goals, and seeing a big goal that she had for 2022 was to make the NFR Playoff Series in Puyallup, WA come to fruition. Gianna is from Santa Rosa, California and started riding when she was 4 years old! Now she is a full time Civil Engineer, Wife, and a breakaway roper. Gianna talks about her aspiring dreams as a breakaway roper, managing a full time job, and also overcoming the huge obstacle of losing her thumb as a freshman in college. Britta Strain is a native Florida cowgirl who has now converted to a Texan. Britta shares her journey into the sport of rodeo, roping, and competing at the collegiate level. As a pre-vet major at Texas A&M University in College Station,Texas, Britta has big goals and aspirations for her rodeo career after college to compete at the professional level. One of her biggest feats thus far has been the fact that she conquered a huge obstacle after a fatal vehicle accident with her truck and trailer.
