Ep 116Improve Learning Outcomes using Laughter with Christee Atwood
The emotional state of your learners has a big impact on your success as an instructor. How you make them feel may not seem important but it is. And I'm pretty sure there is neuroscience research to support that claim. Even if there isn't, who doesn't like to laugh and have fun while they're learning? We're excited to have Christee Atwood as our guest helping us link laughter and learning. But that's not all. We'll also discuss how to produce successful online virtual training sessions when the audience is skeptical and not very motivated to participate. She'll share a broad range of experiences in corporate training that are sure to tickle your funny bone. "I am the author of 14 books, and counting. I have presented programs from Texas to Tokyo, California to the Caribbean And I've never been hit by a rotten tomato yet. That either means I'm doing well, or that people have more respect for rotting produce than they used to.I write books on business and training topics, as well as humorous books, and occasionally the two overlap." - Christee AtwoodBecome virtual friends with the IDIODC gang on twitter. Why not?Podcasting is more than just digital versions of news programs or repurposed comedy shows. Podcasting is an amazing way to deliver audio content in a format that is easy to access and available to all employees with a computer or mobile device. In fact, it's a great vehicle for delivering learning content. Internal corporate podcasts are beginning to grow in popularity. This week we have an amazing guest to talk with us about the power of podcasting. I'm the contrarian voice that invents solid practices where needed; the champion of change and innovation with a keen eye on the balance sheet. And I know how to inject confidence into under-appreciated team of good people doing good work.I embraced the web when it was young, dragging a multi-billion dollar company along with me as they kicked and screamed all the way to the bank. I’m among the first dozens of podcasters, where there are now nearly a million. I've lead teams of innovators, presented to thousands of people around the world, have authored 2.5 books in the “for Dummies” series, and continue to push the envelope of media and technology."" - Evo TerraBecome virtual friends with the IDIODC gang on twitter. Ep 106Learner Experience Design: A New Perspective on Design Thinking for Instructional Designers With Sharon Boller #IDIODC
The new book "Design Thinking for Training and Development" offers a primer on design thinking, a human-centered process and problem-solving methodology that focuses on involving users of a solution in its design. For effective design thinking, talent development professionals need to go beyond the UX, the user experience, and incorporate the LX, the learner experience. The author Sharon Boller joins us for a conversation on learner experience design and shares some practical case studies that have successfully implemented an LX strategy. "I joined TiER1 Performance in 2019 after selling Bottom-Line Performance to them. BLP was incorporated by my husband and me in 1999. Our focus was on “the right learning solution,” and we grew the company to a $4M+ company over the span of 20 years. In 2019, in a desire to expand both capabilities and capacity, we joined forces with TiER1, whose focus is “strategy activation through people.” In addition to L&D solutions, they focus more broadly on talent development, change management, strategic communications, and mergers and acquisitions." - Sharon Boller Become virtual friends with the IDIODC gang on twitter. By thinking visually about the content you are creating you become a better instructional designer. Kevin Thorn shows us his process for breaking down images and objects into a combination of simple shapes. And then building your own objects and visuals that support your content by simply reversing the process. It all starts with simple shapes. And even if you think you can't draw, Kevin will help you change your mind and give you the confidence to be the visual thinker your projects need you to be. Ep 98Why Design Thinking Isn't a Thing & Instructional Designers Don't Need It With Debbie Levitt #IDIODC
We've had a chance to talk with many instructional designers on IDIODC over the last 2 years. And most instructional designers are "ALL IN" on the trend in design thinking. But what if I told you the trend is actually not even a thing to be trending? This week we're talking with a UX/UI expert who specializes in improving the customer experience. She has a few strong opinions about design thinking and why it's not a thing. And if we look at our work as training professionals, we can see how building online eLearning experiences could benefit from a UX designers experience. Join us for what's sure to be a fun conversation about instructional design, customer experience, user experience, and design thinking. This is one episode you do not want to miss. Debbie Levitt, CXO of Delta CX, has been a CX and UX strategist, designer, and trainer since the 1990s. As a “serial contractor” who lived in the Bay Area for most of this decade, Debbie has influenced interfaces at Sony, Wells Fargo, Constant Contact, Macys.com, Oracle, and a variety of Silicon Valley startups. Clients have given her the nickname, “Mary Poppins,” because she flies in, improves everything she can, sings a few songs, and flies away to her next adventure. Debbie has presented at conferences including eBay’s Developer Conference, PayPal’s Developer Conference, UXPA, and WeAreDevelopers. She is an O’Reilly published author and one of few instructors on the planet recommended by Axure. Her “DevOps ICU” book and training teach non-CX roles about CX, why it’s done by specialists, and how to integrate it into teams and processes. Her “Delta CX” book and training teach companies how to improve customer satisfaction, predict and mitigate business risk, and increase ROI by investing in great customer experiences. Outside of CX work, and sometimes during CX work, Debbie enjoys singing symphonic prog goth metal, opera, and New Wave. Ep 97Dump your Training Strategy for a Learning Ecosystem Strategy With Derek Redmond #IDIODC
With the average shelf life of an employee’s skills at less than five years, it is imperative that organizations support their employees in staying current in new and emerging skills and in learning how to learn. Learning management systems, once seen as a one-size-fits all learning solution, have not effectively kept pace with wider technology development, and the needs and expectations of workplace learning. Moreover, organizations tend to have too narrow a view when considering the elements that affect learning at their organization. An ecological and holistic approach is needed to improve learning environments and to future-proof these environments for new developments in education and technology. Join us for a conversation with Derek Redmond about Learning Ecosystems. Derek is an Instructional Designer & Educational Technologies Specialist at PointClickCare with over 7 years in the industry. Previous to PointClickCare, Derek worked for the Baycrest Centre for Learning, Research and Innovation in Long-Term Care and Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences. Ep 92The Rise of Informal Video-Based Learning With Chris Karel #IDIODC
Video-based learning is on the rise... and has been since the launch of YouTube in 2005. Mobile devices, apps, and social media, are some of the drivers behind this trend. It's a tech trend in businesses with cautiously curious executives wondering how to use it as a competitive advantage. There are many opportunities for training departments. But there are also legal and IT concerns. And despite the fact that's video is cheaper than ever to produce and deliver, there are still concerns over hidden costs of file storage and internal bandwidth costs. The good news is that all of the concerns associated with video-based learning can be solved. As an industry our first step is to learn how we can keep our video production skills current with these modern capabilities. Join us for a conversation on this weeks live eLearning podcast with Chris Karel who has been creating video-based learning for many years and now runs his own video learning company. Hang out with us and bring your questions...and a cup of coffee. "Ever since I used a popcorn bucket to defend the galaxy against the dark side of the Force,¹ I’ve been obsessed with visual storytelling. Cartoons, sitcoms, dramas, and even the commercials brought me joy. Then I found interactive storytelling. I used joysticks and direction pads to discover plot twists and adrenaline-fueled battles. Movies, TV, videogames, I couldn’t get enough, but my heart was drawn to the lifestyle of the teacher. I wanted to learn the ways of my father. I chose education over communications and earned my way to Master Teacher. Leading teams of teachers, parents, and of course padawans,² I furthered my quest. I learned that many of the “truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view.”³ My POV changed. Returning to the ways of the Jedi, I chose to embody the adage: “Do or do not, there is no try.” ⁴ I became a Digital Storyteller. Writing, producing, shooting, and editing, I found my Road Back.⁵ After sharpening my skills to a position of leadership, it was time to leap. Today, my passion is finding ways to help people learn how to use video for learning purposes. Story is the Force. I use Story to improve knowledge, teach skills, affect behavior, and occasionally entertain. Send an email to [email protected] and we can add to each other's quest. References1. Ep 90Learning Experience Design is the New Instructional Design With Jeff Tillett #IDIODC
You've probably heard about Learning Experience Platforms but have you ever thought about being a learning experience designer? It's not a new term or title, but we often blend conversations about experience design into instructional design. Perhaps it's time we talk about it as something different. Instructional design served us well for over 50 years and perhaps it should be replaced by Learning Experience Design. None of us have all the answers, but it's going to be a fun conversation to have with Jeff Tillett. Jeff is experienced with technology, and solving business problems through the training function within the Fortune 500. But don't ask him about instructional design because he's having more success being a Learning Experience Designer. We'll be talking with Jeff about how he defines Learning experience design and how thinking differently helped him transition training programs from old traditional methods to new learning experiences that support the modern worker. "I am a native of the Pacific Northwest and grew up in central Washington. As a young man, I worked on orchards and farms around the Yakima Valley. I learned to work hard and cultivated my “maker” skills set. In high school I explored architecture, fine arts, audio engineering. I also earned a certificate in Radio and TV Broadcasting. I am an Instructional Designer, Learning Experience Designer. I have a background in graphic design, media development and production. I have worked with computers and Internet technologies for over 20 years; a survivor of the Internet boom, I assisted many startups in successfully building business and eCommerce ventures. In the late 90’s my focus turned to interactive content for learning when I was part of a distance-learning Internet start-up. Since then I have worked for various companies as an interactive developer and Instructional Designer, including Adobe, T-Mobile USA, Microsoft, Entirenet, Float Mobile Learning, Apple. Most recently, I helped Amazon Machine Learning University move from classroom only to a blended model in order to scale their program. I help organizations leverage video, interactive media and mobile technology to create high performance engaging learning." - Jeff Tillett Jeff: @MojoTillett https://twitter.com/mojotillett?lang=enBrent: @BSchlenker https://twitter.com/bschlenkerChris: @Chris_V_W https://twitter.com/Chris_V_WIDIODC: @TeamIDIODC https://twitter.com/TeamIDIODC Brent Schlenker is dominKnow's Community Manager. Ep 88Improving Learning Engagement Through Community Participation With Shannon Tipton #IDIODC
With so many courses being created on a regular basis, and so few of them showing much level of improvement, how do we make a better learning mouse trap? Communities! People learn best when they are connecting with other people. And in the standard models of instructional design we typically leave participants on their own after the training event has occurred. But when we know that learning is a long-term process, why don't we do more to support that? Well... now we can. This week on IDIODC we'll be talking with Shannon Tipton who regularly engages the students who take her courses with a slack group for collaborative engagement before, during, and after the main training events. This idea isn't new, but executing it successfully certainly is. Join us and hear how Shannon has successfully integrated communities into her learning designs. Grab your thinking cap, a cup of coffee or tea (or whatever your drink of choice may be), and get ready for an insightful session with Shannon, Brent and Chris! Shannon Tipton is CLO of Learning Rebels, an organization focused on improving business L&D through unique blended and microlearning training designs. She also is the author of her book "Disruptive Learning: Discover Your Inner Learning Rebel". Ep 87Drink'n'Draw - Creating Icons for Learning Projects With Kevin Thorn #IDIODC
Welcome to another edition of IDIODC Drink'n'Draw-ing with Kevin Thorn, we'll be talking about the usage and importance of icons as graphic elements in your instructional designs. (Not sure what Drink'n'Draw is? Catch up on our last Drink'n'Draw episode with Kevin Thorn here on Youtube: https://youtu.be/2AO-ov8QESY ) With a favourite returning guest Kevin Thorn in the house, he'll be showing us how to start with a sketch and build your own icon sets. We'll be looking to your, the chat room audience, for inspiration. You will all vote on an idea. Kevin will show us how to sketch it, snap a photo of it, import it into Illustrator and convert it to an icon. But even if you're not a graphic designer, you can still benefit from understanding this design process. You may not become the world's greatest icon creator, but in a pinch you could be the person that saves a project from doom because you had this little skill. And there is a psychology to icons as well that we will discuss along with the importance of understanding cultural norms and Accessibility guidelines. So even if you don't do the art work, you'll need to have a solid understanding of the nuance of icons and the instructional power they wield. Welcome to our second episode of the new year! Grab your thinking cap, a cup of coffee or tea (or whatever your drink of choice may be), and get ready for an insightful session with Kevin, Brent and Chris! Ep 83Training Innovations in a Heavily Controlled Industry With James Gilchrist
If you work in any of the highly regulated and controlled industries as a trainer or instructional designer, you may have found it to be lacking in creativity and innovation. You likely spend the majority of your time developing and supporting compliance training that must first be approved by a committee of members from all departments. And we all know how that turns out. Learners receive boring slides filled with jargon approved by the legal team. The good news is that it doesn’t need to be that way. As an instructional designer working in the finance industry for many years, James Gilchrist has taken on the task of navigating difficult environments, pushing up against corporate boundaries, and succeeding at being innovative. It’s not often that we find a creative soul like James working in this type of environment and willing to share his tips and tricks with the IDIODC community.James is an Associate Director at the DTCC (Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation) in its DTCC Learning department. Hired as an Instructional Designer on contract in 2008, he made the transition to FTE in 2010 and has spent the last ten years developing client learning initiatives for many of DTCC’s core financial service offerings. He considers the work of building learning solutions and the experience of managing client relationships as equally important when it comes to creating innovative corporate training that makes an impact.Become virtual friends with the IDIODC gang on twitter. Ep 81Instructional Designers in Offices Speaking to the Lizard Brain with Mike Taylor
Whether you're a learning professional or a marketer, you're competing for the same thing: attention. Without it, you can't get people to think and act in new ways. Though, there is one big difference between these two professionals. Marketers have been much more successful. Savvy marketers understand that tapping into the psychology of emotions sparks engagement in today's hyper-distracted world. That's a mindset learning professionals need now more than ever before. Mike Taylor joins us for an engaging conversation about the many things corporate training professionals can learn from marketing professionals. We'll discuss the psychology of our audience and how marketers are better at leveraging their emotional needs with engaging imagery, video, and copywriting skills. You'll leave with a better understanding of how you can still be an instructional designer but improve your effectiveness by thinking like a marketer. With over two decades of real-life, in-the-trenches experience, designing and delivering learning experiences, Mike Taylor understands that effective learning isn’t about the latest fad or trendy new tools. Known for his practical, street-savvy style; Mike directs learning technology and online learning at Mindset Digital in Columbus, Ohio. He shares what he learns on his website at mike-taylor.org. Ep 80Drink'n'Draw - Hands on Practice Sketching Instructional Designs With Kevin Thorn
Some of the greatest ideas, inventions, and innovations started as sketches. And the biggest mistake we often make is jumping into our software to start developing. But for more successful outcomes, we should all be starting with paper and pen. And if you’re one of those people that thinks “…but I can’t draw”, then this IDIODC is perfect for you. The amazing instructional illustrator Kevin Thorn joins Chris and Brent to talk about sketching in the design process. He’ll be doing some live sketching on his iPad and walking us through the basics and how it applies to designing all kinds of learning experiences. Kevin’s latest project is helping professionals increase their creativity and innovation by combining the creative process of illustration and game thinking. You don’t need to be a professional artist to practice and successfully sketch your ideas. And game thinking isn’t just about creating fun card games and board games. It’s about designing purposeful learning experiences that may or may not have game elements included. Find out more about how you can leverage simple sketches to improve your instructional design skills on the next IDIODC. Kevin is an award-winning eLearning designer & developer, consultant, and owner of NuggetHead Studioz, LLC., a boutique custom design and development studio specializing in online learning experiences. Ep 79Learning xAPI One Piece at a Time With Andrew McGuire
Are you looking to venture into the xAPI, but don’t know where to start? Are you all thumbs when it comes to code? It may seem simple but for Andrew McGuire a journey with xAPI started by building the most basic of elements. Andrew is excited to share with you the details about how he found a simple (not easy) way to learn how to use xAPI. Andrew began working at his current position thinking xAPI as a nothing more than a replacement to SCORM. He had also done little more than edit code. Then he found an article on how to send statements to an LRS from a basic webpage. Through many failures, he focused on getting the core elements working and then adding on to that. In this way, he was able to implement a webpage utilization tracker with xAPI that fit his company’s business needs. Since then, he has been able to lead an effort that got xAPI implemented into an enterprise-wide performance support utilization tracking solution. This was done by developing iterative prototypes that added value, researching existing resources, and getting plugged into an active L&D network. Ep 78Design Thinking - A Cultural Trojan Horse With David E. Elliott, Charlaine Lapointe and Christian Sabourin
When creating powerful learning content, an organization and its practitioners need to do more than follow a simple series of steps. There are a collection of different cultural values and practices that must be addressed in order to deliver learning that reaches its full potential, and be a rich and enjoyable experience for the audience. Three team members from the Canada School of Public Service (CSPS), will share stories about applying Learning Experience Design (LXD), the application of Design Thinking for the development of learning experiences and products. Their multi-disciplinary team won an Award of Excellence in Innovation earlier this month and they are eager to share what they have learned. This chats special guests:David E. Ep 765 Lessons Instructional Designers Can Learn from a Beginner With Mike Simmons
Do you remember your first instructional design project? Not the one you did in school, but the first REAL course you created for a client or first full time job? No doubt it included a decent amount of stress and anxiety. Those are feelings you’d likely rather forget, but the lessons you learned probably shaped the way you work even to this day.On this weekly episode of IDIOODC, Chris Van Wingerden and Brent Schlenker talk with friend Mike Simmons, founder of Catalyst Sale, and host of the Catalyst Sale Podcast. He recently produced and launched his first training course and he’s agreed to share a few of his many lessons learned during the process. Most of us suffer from the “curse of knowledge” and have forgotten what it’s like to be a beginner. Check out the fun conversation with Mike as we all take a step back and re-learn the importance of what we do as instructional designers.Mike works in revenue operations, predictable growth through data and design. Welcome back friends to the first episode of IDIODC back from summer vacation! We gotta say, we missed you guys. We can't wait to start off September with a conversation over a much needed cup of coffee with just us learning folk. Reminder for season 3, if you want to catch us live on Crowdcast.com, we will now be airing at 10am ET. Don't miss us! https://www.crowdcast.io/dominknow For this first episode of IDIODC Season 3, we will be talking with the ever so intelligent, Anna Leach! There are very few data analysts who understand instructional design, or care about it for that matter. As we all hear about the coming tsunami of data via xAPI and other technologies, we need to figure out how to use it. More importantly, we need to understand why it's important to gather data and plan how we will use it to improve the learning solutions we provide. We'll have a great conversation with Anna about her journey and what she's learned while blending the fields of Learning Technologies and Data Analytics. Anna is a PhD student and graduate teaching associate at the School of Information at the University of Arizona. The iSchool focuses on the intersection of people, technology, and information. Her studies are focused educational technology and the information it produces or consumes and how it can or does impact humans. She is working to understand the value of the data collected and how it can empower learners and elevate learning. She is researching what data is collected in our LMSes (and other learning tools), how much we understand about data privacy, and how we interpret this data for assessment. Prior to the PhD program, Anna worked as a data analyst at the Ohio State University. She also completed her Masters in Learning Technologies in the Fall of 2017 through the Ohio State University online program. She has discussed her data analysis journey in a TEDxPSU talk titled Beyond the Numbers: A Data Analyst Journey. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2oOFs4WgI0&feature=youtu.be In her free time, she spends time with her family and pug Skully or hiking or crocheting. Ep 68Building Cohort Experiences as a Learning and Development Solution: With Special Guest Megan Torrance
The Beatles said it best. We get by with a little help from our friends. Or something like that. And it’s true. We learn more and become more productive when we’re with other people, especially our friends and trusted colleagues. However, bringing a group together for an impactful conversation with meaningful outcomes does not happen by accident. We used to solve this problem with single events. The newer, more successful approach is long term, connected groups, communicating virtually and in periodic group gatherings. It’s a cohort of professionals supporting each other in the long term process of learning, and behaviour change. While Brent is away this week, Megan Torrance is joining Chris to talk about the power of learning with your friends. You may know Megan from her years of experience running the xAPI Cohort, or her past episodes on IDIODC. In this conversation we’ll talk with Megan about how the cohort framework can be applied in so many different corporate situations as a comprehensive learning and development solution. Megan Torrance is CEO and founder of TorranceLearning, which helps organizations connect learning strategy to design, development, data and ultimately performance. Megan has over 25 years of experience in learning design, deployment and consulting. Megan and the TorranceLearning team are passionate about sharing what works in learning so they devote considerable time to teaching and sharing about Agile project management for learning experience design and, of course, the xAPI. TorranceLearning hosts the xAPI Learning Cohort, a free, virtual 12-week learning-by-doing opportunity where teams form on the fly and create proof-of-concept xAPI projects. Megan is the author of The Quick Guide to LLAMA, and two ATD TD at Work publications: Agile and LLAMA® for ISD Project Management and Making Sense of xAPI. She is a frequent speaker at conferences nationwide. TorranceLearning projects have won several Brandon Hall Group awards, the 2014 xAPI Hyperdrive contest at DevLearn, and back-to-back eLearning Guild DemoFest Best-In-Show awards in 2016/2017 with xAPI projects.
