With the average shelf life of an employee’s skills at less than five years, it is imperative that organizations support their employees in staying current in new and emerging skills and in learning how to learn. Video-based learning is on the rise... and has been since the launch of YouTube in 2005. Mobile devices, apps, and social media, are some of the drivers behind this trend. It's a tech trend in businesses with cautiously curious executives wondering how to use it as a competitive advantage. There are many opportunities for training departments. Writing, producing, shooting, and editing, I found my Road Back.⁵ After sharpening my skills to a position of leadership, it was time to leap. You've probably heard about Learning Experience Platforms but have you ever thought about being a learning experience designer? It's not a new term or title, but we often blend conversations about experience design into instructional design. Perhaps it's time we talk about it as something different. Instructional design served us well for over 50 years and perhaps it should be replaced by Learning Experience Design. Hey, Merry end of year reporting Season! ...What? That's not a thing? Sure it is! This is the perfect time of year to be reflecting on your accomplishments and the value you add to your organization. But the big question is What do you count? What data do you have that tells the best story? Well, it's not too late to figure that out. Wrapping up 2019 with a solid EOY report is the best way to put the last 365 days into perspective. Evaluate what you've accomplished and note all things you may have not had enough time for as well. This sort of report will not only show you how far you've come, but also help you better forecast 2020! Are you looking to venture into the xAPI, but don’t know where to start? Are you all thumbs when it comes to code? It may seem simple but for Andrew McGuire a journey with xAPI started by building the most basic of elements. Andrew is excited to share with you the details about how he found a simple (not easy) way to learn how to use xAPI. Andrew began working at his current position thinking xAPI as a nothing more than a replacement to SCORM. He had also done little more than edit code. Then he found an article on how to send statements to an LRS from a basic webpage. Through many failures, he focused on getting the core elements working and then adding on to that. In this way, he was able to implement a webpage utilization tracker with xAPI that fit his company’s business needs. Since then, he has been able to lead an effort that got xAPI implemented into an enterprise-wide performance support utilization tracking solution. This was done by developing iterative prototypes that added value, researching existing resources, and getting plugged into an active L&D network. Anna is a PhD student and graduate teaching associate at the School of Information at the University of Arizona. The iSchool focuses on the intersection of people, technology, and information. Her studies are focused educational technology and the information it produces or consumes and how it can or does impact humans. She is working to understand the value of the data collected and how it can empower learners and elevate learning. She is researching what data is collected in our LMSes (and other learning tools), how much we understand about data privacy, and how we interpret this data for assessment. Prior to the PhD program, Anna worked as a data analyst at the Ohio State University. She also completed her Masters in Learning Technologies in the Fall of 2017 through the Ohio State University online program. The Beatles said it best. We get by with a little help from our friends. Or something like that. And it’s true. We learn more and become more productive when we’re with other people, especially our friends and trusted colleagues. However, bringing a group together for an impactful conversation with meaningful outcomes does not happen by accident. We used to solve this problem with single events. The newer, more successful approach is long term, connected groups, communicating virtually and in periodic group gatherings.
