Ep 66Why Most Learning Fails & How to Fix It: With Special Guest Tim Slade

Let’s admit it: most learning is a total failure! The sad reality is that most courses require learners to sit through a disappointing experience, where information is poorly organized, the content isn’t relevant, and the interactions seem contrived and without purpose. This is compounded even more when the slideshow-like presentation is interrupted with several poorly-written quiz questions and cheesy animations to make it all seem “fun.” In this IDIODC session, Brent and Chris bring on the one and only Tim Slade to talk about revamping ineffective eLearning! During this cast you will explore many of the reasons why most learning fails and the components that contribute to bad learning design. At the end of this session, you will walk away with several practical methods you can immediately apply to design learning that delivers results. Tim Slade is a Speaker, Author & Award-Winning Freelance eLearning Designer. Having spent the last decade working to help others elevate their eLearning and visual communications content, Tim has been recognized and awarded within the eLearning industry multiple times for his creative and innovative design aesthetics. He is also a regular speaker at international eLearning conferences, co-author of the popular E-Learning Uncovered book series, and author of The eLearning Designer’s Handbook. Ep 65Game Thinking is a Litmus Test for Good Design: With Special Guest Deborah Thomas

Analyze need, identify objectives, curate content and then what? Design and develop the course? No! Try thinking about the design through the lens of a game designer. A gamified event or a serious game. This allows you to think about the behaviour changes that you want them (learners, employees, managers, etc) to realize by looking at: Game goal Mechanics Actions and Resources Failure and winning Whether you want to nudge behaviour changes by rewarding daily actions, encourage completion of a task, or reward for daily practice just by applying gamification elements, you can discover key components about the topic that you may have missed. Game thinking is the litmus test to whether you have fully considered and included all of the necessary content. Deborah Thomas is the President, Owner and Senior Consultant at SillyMonkey LLC. She is currently focused on games design and development in training. With over 20 year experience in the L&D field from training manager, instructional designer and game designer, she really has a grasp on what makes great training. There is also a significant element of microlearning in the mix. All of these concepts have come together as a new comprehensive solution that improves business outcomes. And that is why businesses are asking for it. This week Brent and Chris bring back returning guest Shannon Tipton for her second appearance on the show! We'll be talking about workflow learning and how it works. She'll go over some of her tips and tricks and examples of success stories using workflow learning. Ep 53Re-envisioning Training Strategies Through a Learner-Centric Lens: With Special Guest Bianca Baumann

During this episode of IDIODC, Brent and Chris bring back on Bianca Baumann to chat about learner-centric styles of training. Similar to the first discussion with Bianca on staying relevant in today's age of technology (you can catch the recording of that conversation here: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/Engage-the-Modern-Learner-With-Bianca_Baumann), the gang discusses the core of what's important in our eLearning - ways to stay engaging and relevant. L&D professionals think they know what’s best for their learners, but do they? When was the last time we asked? When developing new training strategies, L&D professionals often assume what learners want and need. It could be based on a current performance issue, or because a new product or service is introduced. Whereas training might be the solution, maybe a short email would do. And even if training is needed, what should it look like? In her new eBook The Little Black Book of Marketing, Bianca describes ways of re-envisioning training strategies through the use of marketing techniques that are focused on the learner. Bianca, Chris and Brent will highlight: Use of training campaigns for learner-centric content Leveraging data points to uncover training needs Use of personas to understand the learners needs Bianca is a curious, self-driven and results-focused professional with 10+ years in the Education field. She is a consultant on learning solutions and leverage data to make learning stick, personalized and delivered just-in-time. Bianca has a mix of education, digital marketing and customer success experience. She's not one for the LMS, seat-time or the next button. Challenging the status quo, Bianca asks the tough questions in order to bring L&D into this century, leaving behind old learning styles that don't work. Ep 47Give Me Context or Give Me Death by PowerPoint! With Special Guests Belen & Gus

This week Brent and Chris change it up, bringing on two special guests - Gus Prestera and Belen Bilgic-Schneider. Belen and Gus share stories from the instructional design trenches, where they have been able to transform content design into a search for meaning by leveraging the power of critical incidents, stories, examples, non-exemplars, conversations, artifacts, scenarios, and cases. In other words, by putting context ahead of all other concerns, including content, interactivity, and aesthetics, instructional designers can architect more meaning-FULL learning experiences for their audiences, packing a greater learning punch, reducing time-to-proficiency, and maximizing return on learning investments. Once you buy into the idea that Context should be in charge, next comes the question of how you change the dynamic with your subject matter experts and stakeholders. We’ll talk about simple content gathering techniques you can start using immediately. Gus Prestera is an organizational effectiveness consultant, educator, and coach. He supports innovative HR and business leaders who are transforming their workforce, making big changes to how they engage, manage and develop their people. He has over 20 years of human capital management experience. Ep 46Is 2019 the year that inclusive design goes mainstream? With Special guest Tanya Seidel

During this episode of IDIODC, the gang brings on special guest Tanya Seidel to chat inclusive design and accessibility. Inclusive design and ensuring courses are accessible to people with disabilities should not be an afterthought. With organizations like Microsoft putting a priority on inclusive design with all of their products, including their product packaging, a new bar is being set for expectations around accessibility and it's time for the e-learning community to follow suit. Historically, accessible e-learning has been categorized as having to be static and limited on engagement. It doesn't have to be! But, many of the rapid e-learning tools that are available today don't always make it easy on developers. So what can we do? Something is better than nothing, and even if you're not obligated to adhere to Section 508, you can take at least some steps to help make your courses accessible to people with disabilities. This session will focus on some of the easier things you can do in development that have a big impact on a course's accessibility. Tanya is the VP of Finance and Technology at Artisan E-Learning and has close to 15 years of experience in the e-learning industry. In addition to managing Artisan’s finance, technology, and marketing landscapes, she is involved in the development and delivery of e-learning courses for a variety of clients and is well-versed in accessibility (Section 508 and WCAG), usability, and responsive design. Tanya spent more than seven years working for Trivantis, the makers of Lectora. She has been involved in creating instructor-led and web-based training programs and materials, but also in leading the design and development of e-learning authoring software and Learning Management Systems. Ep 44Ruthlessly Relevant - How Can We Engage The Modern Learner?

In time of overloaded schedules, smartphones and on-demand resources everywhere, it is getting more and more difficult to get through to our learners. L&D programs need to be ruthlessly relevant in today’s world. We have to focus on the performance-outcomes and work our way backwards to create learning experiences that stick. One way to achieve this is to take a page out of the marketing playbook and use time-tested tools and techniques to create relevant and engaging content. This week Brent and Chris bring on special guest Bianca Baumann to chat ways to increase engagement amongst learners! Ep 42Reading Digital Body Language - It's the New A in Your ADDIE Model: With Special Guest Jo Cook

In the past, teachers were responsible for “reading the room” and “getting a feel” for how learners were responding. But todays technologies help us discover more about them through their digital body language. Digital Body Language is more than just how you look on your webcam. That’s analog body language as seen through the webcam lens…and it’s important. But did you know that everything you do online tells us…them…someone… a little more about you and what your needs are, or might be? This has been the realm of digital marketing for decades, but it’s important to instructional designers as well. The learning experiences we create are part of a larger learning experience for the user. They may attend a virtual classroom session, take a self-paced eLearning course, and consume short videos to refresh the learning. And they’ll also be joining communities and chatting with peers about the same content. All of those contribute to learning and using analytics we can use data to discover what they need. Jo Cook is a speaker, instructional designer and classroom facilitator who specializes in virtual classrooms, webinars and live online learning technology. Jo’s passion is in helping and supporting teams, professionals and organizations embrace the benefits of the virtual classroom. Through her company Lightbulb Moment, Jo has specialized in training learning professionals about virtual classroom design and delivery since 2013 and has spoken on various topics at conferences such as Learning Technologies, Online Educa Berlin and keynoted for Colleges Wales and E-learning Fusion. Jo is also part-time is the Deputy Editor of Training Journal magazine and website and her background include: further and higher education; the charity sector; small and large organizations, including CNN News and Bupa International. Ep 25Accelerate Your xAPI Skills with Cohort Learning: with Special Guest Megan Torrance

Instructional Designers In Offices Drinking Coffee In this episode, Brent and Chris chat with the one and only Megan Torrance from TorranceLearning. With the xAPI Fall Cohort just getting kicked off, the three go over the ABC's of xAPI and get you a full scoop of what the xAPI Cohort is all about. (Don't need to read anymore on xAPI Fall Cohort and want to get started ASAP? Well, here's the link! https://www.torrancelearning.com/xapi-cohort/ ) The xAPI Learning Cohort is a free, vendor-neutral, 12-week learning-by-doing project-based team learning experience about the Experience API. (Yep, you read that right – free!) It’s an opportunity for those who are brand new to xAPI and those who are looking to experiment with it to learn from each other and from the work itself. Participants form teams based on shared interests and work together on an xAPI project. Each cohort features some predefined projects so you can jump right into something that sounds interesting and of course you can come with your own project idea and gather a team around you to get moving (or bring your team!). Past projects have included an onboarding checklist that leverages the Internet of Things (IoT), a game that tracks user clicks as a way to identify UX gaps, and exploration of LMS-LRS interoperability. xAPI Learning Cohorts run twice a year in spring and fall “semesters” with weekly all-group web meetings on Thursdays 2pm US Eastern Time chock-full of introductory information, practical how-tos, and high-level discussions of the implications for our industry. Teams work on real-life projects that interest them and set their own meeting and working schedules. Oh, and it’s ok to just hang out on the sidelines and observe the action if taking on a team project is too much right now. It’s also ok to participate on more than one project team during a Cohort session. Megan Torrance is CEO and founder of TorranceLearning, which helps organizations connect learning strategy to design, development, data and ultimately performance. Megan has over 25 years of experience in learning design, deployment and consulting. Megan and the TorranceLearning team are passionate about sharing what works in learning so they devote considerable time to teaching and sharing about Agile project management for learning experience design and, of course, the xAPI. TorranceLearning hosts the xAPI Learning Cohort, a free, virtual 12-week learning-by-doing opportunity where teams form on the fly and create proof-of-concept xAPI projects. Megan is the author of The Quick Guide to LLAMA, and two ATD TD at Work publications: Agile and LLAMA® for ISD Project Management and Making Sense of xAPI. She is a frequent speaker at conferences nationwide. TorranceLearning projects have won several Brandon Hall Group awards, the 2014 xAPI Hyperdrive contest at DevLearn, and back-to-back eLearning Guild DemoFest Best-In-Show awards in 2016/2017 with xAPI projects. TorranceLearning is a 2018 Michigan 50 Companies to Watch.
