HR Works Podcast 164: Building an Effective Organizational Culture
We all know that getting culture right is an absolute must at any organization. But sometimes the stakes are higher than just a potential loss of motivation or high turnover. For example, when poor work cultures intersect with poor safety cultures, lives can be at risk. In episode 164 of HR Works Podcast, we talk about the space shuttle Columbia disaster, a fatal incident in the U.S. space program. On February 1, 2003, the space shuttle exploded as it reentered the atmosphere, killing all seven crew members. After an investigation, the Columbia Accident Investigation Board (CAIB) found that NASA’s organizational culture was as much to blame for the explosion as technical difficulties. HR Works Podcast 162: ADHD Isn't a Knowledge Problem, It's a Performance Problem
According to experts, the number of adults with ADHD is between 8 and 9 million. Although we can’t say for sure what the numbers are among the workforce, but it is likely you have employees with ADHD – and if you don’t, you will. ADHD is one of those things that is vastly misunderstood and poorly portrayed in the media. And even the name itself poorly describes what ADHD is and what it is really like. In addition to being misunderstood, individuals with ADHD routinely have difficulty with employment, and those difficulties can mask their natural capabilities. In our latest installment of HR Works Podcast, our guest is an advocate and disability expert with a lot to say on the subject. Please take a listen in to learn symptoms of adults with ADHD, how to help them better focus at work, get organized, and more. We are pleased to have Dr. J. Russell Ramsey, Co-Director of Adult ADHD Treatment and Research Program, Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology in Psychiatry at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

Some attribute at least part of the great resignation to mental health challenges, and that is just a tiny part of the overall impact that these concerns will have. Today we are going to talk about the idea of change fatigue, what it is, and what role it plays in regards to mental health. HR Works Podcast 160: Strong Candidates Among the Disabled
Guest: Carolyn Cannistraro, Account Relationship Manager, Wells Fargo According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the current unemployment rate for persons with a disability is 12.6% compared with the total unemployment rate of 5.4%. False myths about people with disabilities often lead to their termination before other employees, as evidenced by the 1 million such employees who were let go since the pandemic began. Since March 2020, 1 in 5 workers with disabilities have been dismissed from employment compared with 1 in 7 other employees. These figures represent a tragedy for employees and employers alike as employees with disabilities are demonstrably excellent and dedicated workers. They are also often in delicate situations outside of work for which the loss of a job can and often does spell disaster. Today’s guest is an advocate and disability expert with a lot to say on the subject. I am pleased to have with me Carolyn Cannistraro, Account Relationship Manager at Wells Fargo (https://www.wellsfargo.com/). HR Works 5-Minute Friday: Converging Factors Created Great Resignation
Guest: Bill Armstrong, President, Gava Talent Solutions A convergence of factors has aligned to create record-breaking turnover over the last few months, a trend that does not seem to be backing off anytime soon. Today’s guest might have an idea or two. I am pleased to have with us today Bill Armstrong, President at Gava Talent Solutions (https://www.gavatalentsolutions.com/). HR Works Podcast 159: Adapting Beyond the Transaction Mindset
Guest: Sanja Licina, Ph.D., President of Workforce Experience, QuestionPro The needs and concerns of employees have changed significantly over the last year and a half. But have they become more difficult to address? Today’s guest does not believe so. She believes employers need to get out of the transactional mindset that pervades employment and take some time to reexamine their employees. She also believes that tried-and-true solutions to the current set of employee issues will work only if employers can identify what those issues are. I am pleased to have with me in this episode Sanja Licina, Ph.D., President of Workforce Experience at QuestionPro (https://www.questionpro.com/). HR Works Podcast 158: For Health Benefits, Employee Experience Is Everything
Employee benefits, and especially health plan costs are among the top costs that employers have. Therefore, they have a vested interest in the health and wellbeing of their employees. But there is a big difference between encouraging healthy behavior among employees, and employees actually sticking to them. That divide costs employers big every year, especially in regards to chronic diseases. In this episode, we are joined by Sean Duffy, CEO of Omada Health (https://www.omadahealth.com/) to discuss methods for creating wellness that sticks by considering the employee experience when it comes to health benefits.

Perhaps the best indicator of the current hiring crisis is the extent to which large organizations, especially those from the fast food industry have gone to try to acquire talent. That includes everything from posting pay at the drive through to offering extensive benefits; this is a symptom of a larger issue at play and one we are going to talk about briefly today with our guest. I am pleased to have with us today Andrew Hunter, Co-Founder & Economist at Adzuna (https://www.adzuna.com/), a comprehensive job search engine. HR Works Podcast 151: LGBTQ+ Discrimination Still a Major Struggle
Guests: Ella Slade, Global LGBTQ+ Leader, IBM and CV Viverito, Deputy Director of Global Programs & Stakeholder Engagement with Out & Equal Workplace Advocates As part of Pride Month, I wanted to tackle LGBTQ+ discrimination in the workplace. Discrimination against individuals of the LGBTQ+ community was codified as illegal just about a year ago, in June of 2020 by the US supreme court when they added sexual orientation and gender identity to classifications protected by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. It was a victory for equality, but as we all know too well, legal protections do not equal the end of discrimination. A recent IBM Out & Equal survey found significant and persistent discrimination against the LGBTQ+community in the workplace. I am pleased to be joined today by two experts. Ella Slade is Global LGBTQ+ Leader at IBM (https://www.ibm.com). They work on IBM's global diversity and inclusion team within HR and have been in their role for two years. Ella first joined IBM as an intern in 2014 and worked in Talent Attraction for 5 years before their current role. CV Viverito, Deputy Director of Global Programs & Stakeholder Engagement with Out & Equal Workplace Advocates (https://outandequal.org/), where they manage programming aimed at advancing LGBTQ+ workplace inclusion in Brazil and Latin America, China, and India. Through partnerships with NGOs and multinational and national corporations, they play a key role in the development and implementation of the organization’s global strategy and activities. Drawing from a variety of sources, local experts, and stakeholders, they oversee the curation of Out & Equal’s globally-focused content. They are here to help HR and employers understand the results and drive real and lasting progress in the workplace for LGBTQ+ employees. The report mentioned in the podcast can be found here (https://www.ibm.com/thought-leadership/institute-business-value/report/lgbt-inclusion). HR Works Podcast 148: AWS on How to Train 29 Million
A recent McKinsey report found that 100 million workers across the globe will need to find new jobs by 2030. That comes to about 17 million Americans that will be transitioning to a new career. However, an Amazon-commissioned Accenture report found that 33 million low-income Americans could be upskilled for emerging jobs with the right training. For this reason, Amazon recently announced that they are committed to training 29 million people across the world for free for in-demand skills. I am pleased to have on the show today Maureen Lonergan, Director of Worldwide Training and Certifications at AWS (https://aws.amazon.com/). Maureen leads a team of builders committed to training the next generation of diverse cloud talent. Maureen empowers AWS customers, partners, and employees to gain the skills and knowledge needed to leverage the power of the AWS Cloud. Maureen launched AWS Training and Certification in 2012 with the vision of delivering new training and certification programs to meet learners where they are and to rapidly proliferate cloud skills. Her team has built a robust portfolio of flexible training offerings alongside an industry-leading certification program and continues to deliver innovative cloud learning opportunities. Education programs from Training and Certification—AWS Academy and AWS re/Start—are building a pipeline of cloud talent to meet the demands of the future. HR Works Podcast 146: Why You Should Hire the Formerly Incarcerated
Guests: Harley Blakeman, Founder & CEO, Honest Jobs and Arthur Yamamoto, VP of Talent, Checkr, Inc. According to the World Prison Brief at PrisonStudies.org, the United States has the largest prison population in the world and the highest per capita incarceration rate. While we could discuss the ethics of such a system, today I’d rather discuss one of the consequences of this system: unhirable candidates among the formerly incarcerated. A job seeker’s incarceration becomes a matter of public record, except in certain specific cases, and comes up on even the most cursory background checks. While many have tried to make things fairer for these candidates, the truth is that the formerly incarcerated have serious difficulty landing jobs. In this episode we are going to explore why the perspective of not hiring the formerly incarcerated is misguided and results in the loss of potentially wonderful talent with two experts. Our first guest is Harley Blakeman, he is the Founder & CEO of Honest Jobs (https://www.honestjobs.co/), an organization dedicated to getting jobs for people that have been affected by the criminal justice system. We also have with us today Arthur Yamamoto, VP of Talent at Checkr (https://checkr.com/), Inc. an organization dedicated to giving every candidate a fair chance to work. Remember you can always follow us on Twitter at @HRWorksPodcast (https://bit.ly/3l0dzP3), and we are also now available on Spotify (http://spoti.fi/3t8of13) and Audible (http://adbl.co/30uhdaq).

Human Resources and that instinct are not particularly compatible. Change is the bread and butter of any HR role, and while that may put some like me outside of their comfort zone, it also invites personalities like that of today's guest. Today I am happy to share a few minutes of my recent interview with Carol Mackinlay, Chief People Officer at UserTesting (https://www.usertesting.com/). If you enjoy this episode, please consider checking in next Thursday, May 27th in our “Faces of HR” (https://hrdailyadvisor.blr.com/category/faces-of-hr/) column where I’ll share the rest of our conversation. HR Works Podcast 5-Minute Friday: HR Leading Through Influence
Guest: Nadian Zak, Senior Vice President of People, Vertava Health HR represents the middle ground between employees and employers. What do poor diversity, hostile work environments, corporate espionage, and poor safety cultures have in common? They can all be found long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away. Whether you are talking about the Empire, the Rebellion, or even the First Order, the organizations that populate the Star Wars universe have a lot to learn from HR and safety professionals. I hope you all enjoy this lighthearted diversion from our often much more serious topics.
