Ep 65065: The Self-Taught Artist’s Path with Sculptor Matt Devine
EI get to catch up with my dear friend and sculptor Matt Devine in this episode. Matt is a self-taught artist who creates beautiful metal sculptures for public and private spaces. He tells us his origin story with art and sculpting and how it has evolved into the work he is doing today. He also explains his creative process, including what inspires him and grounds him. We reminisce about the early days of trying to get his work out there and how that has helped him get where he is today.Guest Bio Matt Devine is a self-taught sculptor working with steel, stainless steel, aluminum and bronze. Born and raised in New England, Devine moved to California in 1995, where he learned to weld and fabricate metal while working alongside his father. The contrasts of nature and industry, light and shadow, chaos and order are themes found throughout Devine’s body of work. Pared-down organic shapes are formed out of sheet and solid materials and welded together in harmonious accord, often allowing the metal to appear as light as paper. These contrasts, plus the relationships of patterns and boundaries, address Devine’s desire to contain chaos and push out the discord of an information-saturated culture.Since becoming a full-time artist in 2004, Devine has developed his signature sculpture style while building his fine art career. Devine’s sculpture is on display at highly-regarded art galleries across North America, Asia and Europe. His works can be found in a myriad of private, corporate and public art collections on five continents.Devine currently works and resides with his wife and daughter on their farm near Portland, Oregon.Featured in this episodeFeatured candle: Beeswax candle from Mithras CandleFeatured brews:Rachel's Brew: New Moon in Virgo Tea Paru TeaMatt's Brew: Matt’s Brew - Portland Breakfast from Smith Tea CompanyFeatured deck: Radiant Crystal Cards by Bouchette DesignConnect with MattLinks:WebsiteInstagramAre you an interior designer or are you interested in Holistic Interior Design? She was trained at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, and currently specializes in experiential art installations. When she joined the team at Modern Times Beer, Christine found herself a home in the beverage industry. Her time at Modern Times taught her to be uninhibited and to trust the team she worked with. During the pandemic, she got the opportunity to make an outdoor event space in Barrio Logan called “Sideyard” attached to ReBru Spirits, and from there, she met the wonderful team at Kove. Kove needed brand direction, and Christine was in the right place at the right time with the skills they needed. She already adored the people and the brand behind it and was lucky to have found Kove at the time she did. Christine then designed the tasting room in Miramar that opened in June of 2022. It was designed to be a ‘modern eclectic experience that can seamlessly transition from day to night.’ Christine’s interior spaces continue to highlight the work she and others produce as fine artists. No two spaces should ever look the same, and bespoke installations are a signature of the work she produces. San Diego Design Week was all about inspiration, and to honor the theme, we created a series of episodes last week that covered inspiration and the senses. After interviewing several amazing artists and creators, I wanted to bring everything together and share how these conversations sparked inspiration within me and within our listeners. I also share my sources of inspiration, which are different depending on which role I am in: designer or business owner. We all have our unique sources of inspiration, so I hope this encourages you to seek out and embrace whatever ignites your creativity!Featured in this EpisodeFeatured candle: Beeswax candle from Mithras CandleFeatured deck: Rider-Waite Colman Smith TarotAre you an interior designer or are you interested in Holistic Interior Design? Ep 57057: San Diego Design Week: Exploring Inspiration & Touch with Anke of Twelve Senses Retreat
In the final episode of our San Diego Design Week series exploring inspiration and the senses, we explore the sense of touch with Anke of Twelve Senses Retreat in Encinitas. Anke’s design journey began with car design and eventually led to creating this beautiful retreat, which has four rooms inspired by the four elements and the senses. She shares how she thoughtfully designed each room, and explains why she chose certain features, materials, and textures for each of the elements. Hearing Anke’s passion for working with her hands and building spaces may also inspire you to create and take a break from working on digital screens.Guest Bio Developing the Twelve Senses Retreat has been a dream of Anke’s for over a decade. The first seed was planted when she traveled to the Valle De Guadalupe with some dear friends. They visited La Villa De La Valle, and Anke was deeply touched by how co-owners Phil and Eileen had left their careers in Los Angeles, moved across the border, and built a new life. Their incredible passion for high quality artisanship and sustainability left a long-lasting impression. Ten years later, she is immensely thankful to have completed Twelve Senses Retreat with incredible support from friends, family, and her architects and building team. She is a proud new member of the Design Hotels group, which has long been her go-to inspiration for travel and hosting.Featured in this episodeFeatured candle: Beeswax candle from Mithras CandleFeatured brew: Mushroom Mocha from Fun Earth CoFeatured Tarot deck: Moon BB Magick Tarot by Angela Mary MagickConnect with Anke & Twelve Senses RetreatLinks:WebsiteInstagramAre you an interior designer or are you interested in Holistic Interior Design? Our San Diego Design Week series on inspiration and the senses continues with a deeper dive into sound with musician Kenseth Thibideau. Kenseth shares with us what inspires him to create, how he continues to develop his craft, and why experimenting and taking risks with our creative work is so valuable. Whichever medium you work with creatively, I hope this conversation inspires you to explore how sound could play a more prominent or intentional role.Guest Bio In the past dozen years, Kenseth Thibideau has become a staple of the Southern California independent music scene. He co-founded a pair of highly-acclaimed experimental rock groups (Tarentel and Rumah Sakit) while in San Francisco, then returned to San Diego to find himself suddenly collaborating with many of the city's most respected and acclaimed musicians. He soon became a touring member of Pinback and Three Mile Pilot, and formed Sleeping People, the frenetic instrumental group that also featured a pre-Dirty Projectors Amber Coffmann—all while continuing his semi-solo Howard Hello project with Marty Anderson (Okay, Dilute). No longer masked in monikers, Thibideau is making what may be the most subtly rewarding music of his career, displaying the countless strengths of one of the west coast's most genuinely talented musicians.Featured in this episodeFeatured candle: Beeswax candle from Mithras CandleFeatured deck: Radiant Crystal Cards by Bouchette DesignConnect with KensethLinks:BandcampSpotifySoundcloudInstagramAre you an interior designer or are you interested in Holistic Interior Design? Ep 49049: How Tarot Enhances My Interior Design Business
In this solo episode, I share how and why I work with Tarot cards in my business. I tend to really get to know my interior design clients, and Tarot is another way I can connect with their energy. It is also another way for us to tap into the energy of the space we’re working on. I even incorporate Reiki when the client is open to it, and I share more about that in this episode. Even if you don’t personally work with Tarot or Reiki, you may have another talent, interest, or gift you can incorporate into your business that truly enhances the experience for your client. Ep 48048: Tarot Tuesday with Totem Tarot by Rachel White
This month I gathered my Bewitching the Home Patreon group for Tarot Tuesday with Rachel White, the creator of Totem Tarot. We talk about the symbolism and ideas behind her unique Tarot deck, as well as her approach to Tarot reading. Rachel also shares a little about the beautiful flower essences she makes for her clients. At the end of our time together, I pull cards from the Totem Tarot for each member of the Patreon group that attended live. Listen in and see if any of the messages resonate with you!Guest Bio Rachel White is The Skeptical Shaman. Here for the spiritually homeless, Rachel blends real-world pragmatism, her sense of humor, and ancient tools and techniques into her practice as a trained shaman, medium, energy practitioner, self-published author, and flower essence maker. As one client wrote in a Yelp review, Rachel White is the “Amy Schumer of shamanic practitioners.” She is equal parts blunt as she is spiritually unique, breaking every preconceived notion of the traditional image of what it means to live a spiritual life. She is, simply put, for the spiritually-curious but noncommittal who are looking for a more profound sense of meaning without feeling like they are joining a cult.Featured in this episodeFeatured candle: Beeswax candle from Mithras CandleFeatured Tarot deck: The Totem Tarot DeckRachel White's brew: Jolie Laide WinesConnect with Rachel WhiteLinks:WebsiteInstagramAre you an interior designer or are you interested in Holistic Interior Design? Ep 44044: Building a Life as an Artist with Fay Ray
EIn this episode, artist Fay Ray and I have a beautiful and honest conversation about the art world, what it means to be both an artist and a parent, and how designers can better understand and incorporate art into spaces. Fay Ray also reminds us of the challenges of building a life as an artist, and she shares how she has remained devoted to her work over the years. There’s so much here to talk about that we could do a part two to this episode, so stay tuned! In the meantime, enjoy this wonderful conversation.Guest Bio Los Angeles-based artist Fay Ray explores the fetishization of objects and the construction of female identity through high-contrast, monochrome photomontages and metallic sculpture. For her three-dimensional works, Fay Ray compiles cast aluminum objects, bored volcanic rocks, wire, chain, and natural materials into suspended sculptural masses. Conflating worlds of worship and desire, the works across mediums borrow from the symbolism and composition of traditional religious relics and the visual language of the occult. Ray’s sculptures and collages hint at the presence of a rematerialized body through a mysterious yet systematic organization of abstract form.Fay Ray (b. 1978, Riverside, CA) received her BFA from Otis College of Art and Design in 2002, and her MFA from Columbia University in 2005. Ep 42042: Creating with Heart & Intention with Malas in Bloom
This week I welcome Tammy Fodrey of Malas in Bloom to talk about the significance of malas and how she began working with these sacred tools. Tammy creates these beautiful pieces herself with high quality, high vibration crystals and also hosts workshops to teach others how to make them. She walks us through the history of malas, how we can work with them in our own daily spiritual practices, and how to care for them. Through her work with malas, Tammy reminds us of the power and significance of setting intentions, which is the important first step of every design project we begin as Holistic Interior Designers.Guest Bio Founded in 2015, Malas In Bloom is the manifestation of Tammy Fodrey’s vision to create a Mala jewelry business that nourishes the roots of ancient traditions while inspiring spiritually-oriented people who are guided by their intuition, self-healing powers, and the awakening of the heart and spirit. All Malas In Bloom pieces are designed by Tammy, drawing on her background in design and merchandising as well as her love for cultural antiquities, art, yoga, spirituality and nature. More than just jewelry, each piece is a blend of beauty and integrity, created to foster happiness, health and prosperity while helping you move through the world with intention and personal authenticity.Featured in this episodeFeatured candle: Beeswax candle from Mithras CandleFeatured brew: Morning Routine from Fun Earth CoFeatured deck: Radiant Crystal Cards by Bouchette DesignConnect with Malas in BloomLinks:WebsiteInstagramAre you an interior designer or are you interested in Holistic Interior Design? Ep 41041: A Look Inside the Design Coven: Interior Design Panel
Wondering what we talk about in the Design Coven? In this episode, I give you a sneak peek into one of our events, an interior design panel we gathered for in July. I had three experienced designers on the panel (including two previous podcast guests): Dee Morrison, Rachel Moriarty, and Suzanne Broyles. They each shared their wisdom around finding clients, building connections, gaining experience, and what to charge. Design Coven members who were present for the live event also got to ask their own questions, and our panelists openly shared their experiences for the benefit of this upcoming group of designers.Featured in this episodeFeatured candle: Beeswax candle from Mithras CandleFeatured deck: Radiant Crystal Cards by Bouchette DesignConnect with our PanelistsDee Morrison: InstagramRachel Moriarity: WebsiteInstagramSuzanne Broyles: WebsiteInstagramInterested in joining the Design Coven? Ep 39039: How to Create Your First Interior Design Service
In this solo episode, I share how to create your first interior design service. A lot of new designers ask me what services they should offer, and when you’re just starting out, there are so many possibilities that it can feel overwhelming. That’s why I recommend starting with one: a virtual design consultation. I walk you through what a virtual consultation can look like and how you can get it set up in a way that is easy for you and the client. Note: I referred to one payment platform option in this episode as "Stride" when I meant to say Stripe. Ep 38038: Design Refresh with Cece
In this Design Refresh session, I help Cece explore options for her two beautiful outdoor spaces. She has two decks located off of the main bedroom, and she’d like to use one space for yoga, and one more as an outdoor sanctuary, creating a spa-like feeling. She feels like the spaces have been afterthoughts, so I help her see other possibilities for the design of both patios that will make them more intentional and inviting.Featured in this episodeFeatured candle: Beeswax candle from Mithras CandleFeatured brew: Lemon Verbena Tea from Paru Tea BarFeatured Tarot deck: The Deck of CelestialsIntroducing my new membership program, the Design Coven! Ep 36036: Leveling up your Interior Design services with custom window treatments and soft goods
Linda Pastor Hodnett, the owner of Stitch Studio and Le Domicile Design, joins me on this episode to talk about her experience in the design industry and how she came to work with soft goods. Stitch Studio (formerly Janie’s Draperies) is a resource I’ve been using since my early days in the industry, and in our conversation, we cover why it is so important to have someone like Linda who will be honest with you about what will and won’t work. She also explains more in depth what soft goods are, what they do for a space, and how she collaborates with designers to create truly beautiful pieces that clients will love.Guest Bio Stitch Studio originates from the 25 year legacy that was Janie’s Draperies.
