Ep 131131: Behind-the-Scenes Design Series - Bivouac 2.0
EThis week I welcome my friend Lara Worm of Bivouac Ciderworks to the podcast for a conversation about community and design. Lara and I are currently collaborating on the design of “Bivouac 2.0,” or Bivouac Adventure Lodge, a beautiful gathering space for cider tasting–and much more–in the North Park neighborhood of San Diego. This episode (and future ones to come) will give you a look inside the design process in the hospitality space, from beginning to end. This project is a great example of how we as designers can help bring the dreams and visions of our clients to life through the addition of little, meaningful details. It is also an example of one of my collaborations with a female business owner, which carries a different vibe and flow. I can’t wait to share more about this project with you!About LaraLara Worm, co-founder, CEO, and self-described “Adventure Guide” of Bivouac Ciderworks, has never followed a traditional path. Lara is a native San Diegan raised in her family’s food and beverage business, however, she wandered “off trail” – as per usual – and went on to pursue a career as a homicide prosecutor in Washington, D.C. After a decade on the East Coast, Lara returned to San Diego and found herself back in the world of hospitality. As an ardent world traveler and adventurous foodie, Lara was first introduced to cider during stints living in Australia and England. Bivouac Ciderworks takes that inspiration from cider culture around the world, but brings a west coast irreverence and style to the traditional drink.A lifelong hiker and outdoor adventurer, and outspoken feminist, Lara somehow found a way to combine her passion for the outdoors, fine food and drink, and social justice, in crafting Bivouac’s lifestyle brand and craft ciders. Lara embraces her adventure by road tripping across the country with Jamie, rock climbing with her dog Cooper, and plotting her eventual move to Mexico.Featured in this episodeFeatured Tarot deck: Rider-Waite Colman Smith TarotConnect with LaraWebsiteBivouac on InstagramBivouac Adventure Lodge on InstagramLara on InstagramAre you an interior designer or are you interested in Holistic Interior Design? Ep 126126: Trād Talks: Sustainability, Creativity, and the Power of Responsible Resourcing
This week I welcome Jessica Phelps, the founder of Trād Furnishings, to the podcast to talk about sustainability, creativity, and responsible resourcing. Through Trād Furnishings, Jessica offers a great, sustainable solution to a problem most designers have at some point: leftover, unused materials from a job. Sometimes we order too much of something or it doesn’t work as we expected it to, but we aren’t able to return it. These items often sit for years, unused, or are discarded. So Jessica created Trād Furnishings to give these items a new life in another designer’s project.Jessica shares the process of how she brought this business to life, why it can be a huge help to designers in San Diego, and her hopes for expansion in the future.Join Jessica and me for a Sustainability Design Coven Training on Thursday, September 14. The event is available to Design Coven Pro members. To become a member, visit designcoven.com/join.About JessicaJessica Phelps is a graduate of Design Institute of San Diego and has worked as an interior designer for over 20 years. Originally from Missouri, she grew up around her grandmother’s bridal shop and has always had an appreciation for beautiful fabrics and design. Early on, she obtained a degree in fashion merchandising and then, once she moved to San Diego, persued her career in interior design. After graduating, she passed her NCIDQ certification in 2005 and has been featured in San Diego Home and Garden magazine as well as mentioned on HGTV's website for a "Bright, Bold and Colorful Kitchen."Jessica strongly believes in working with a client and their style while guiding them to a beautifully balanced interior. She enjoys thinking "outside of the box" while respecting the fundamentals of good design and especially has a passion for designing tile layouts because of the infinite possibilities. In 2020, Jessica finally decided to take action on her idea of an online marketplace for interior designers to buy and sell items that didn’t work for a job. Finally in mid-2023, Trādfurnishings.com was launched. Jessica is currently excited to see how Trād Furnishings will flourish and help the design community while, at the same time, continuing to grow and enjoy her interior design career.Featured in this episodeFeatured Tarot deck: Rider-Waite Colman Smith TarotConnect with JessicaWebsiteInstagramAre you an interior designer or are you interested in Holistic Interior Design? Ep 125125: Building Your Own Interior Design Business with Sasha Pusey
This week, I have Design Coven Member Sasha on the podcast to talk about her experience in the interior design industry and how she recently built her own business. A lot of designers ask me about starting their own businesses, which is amazing, but I find most aren’t aware of all the work that goes on behind the scenes (often spanning several years) before most designers go out on their own successfully. Sasha’s story is a great example of the process many of us move through before being ready to jump out on our own. Sasha also took advantage of all the Design Coven membership benefits, including mentorship with me, and she talks about how this helped her gain the confidence and skills needed to manage her own business. If you’re considering membership in the Design Coven but want to hear more about how it can move you forward and elevate your business, this episode is a must-listen!About SashaSasha has been practicing interior design since graduating from Florida State University in 2014 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Interior Design. She has had the pleasure of working with Architectural and Design firms all over the world. Now, she’s excited to begin a new chapter designing dream homes, boutique hotels, wanderlust restaurants, and more. She is passionate about creating spaces that positively impact individuals. She thrives on connecting, listening and implementing an innovative design that is both aesthetically beautiful and functional for the user. Over the course of her professional career, she’s played a key role in a variety of projects in various sectors, including corporate and healthcare, but hospitality/multi-family and residential design is where she truly shines.Featured in this episodeFeatured Tarot deck: Rider-Waite Colman Smith TarotConnect with SashaWebsiteInstagramAre you an interior designer or are you interested in Holistic Interior Design? Ep 117117: Artist Spotlight: JenMarie Landig
In this month’s Artist Spotlight, multi-disciplinary artist JenMarie Landig joins me to talk about her unique journey with art and how she successfully weaves together her various talents and passions in her business. Like many interior designers I work with, JenMarie has multiple creative interests that she wants to pursue, and rather than force herself to compartmentalize or choose just one, she has embraced what she calls “full spectrum living.” We discuss what it has been like for both of us to show up as our full selves in life and business. The Design Coven will be doing a virtual Mindful Movement workshop with JenMarie on August 11 to help us explore the connection between our experiences, our emotions, and our bodies. This workshop is inclusive of all levels and abilities. If you want to join us, become a Design Coven member at designcoven.com/join. About JenMarieJenMarie Landig, born in Orange, California, currently lives and works in Southern California where she roams from Los Angeles to San Diego and several cities in between. Landig has a multi-disciplinary artistic practice grounded in photography, writing, movement, performance, and community. Critical to her practice is a focus on style and design through moments of play and laughter, gut-checks and stillness, connection and curiosity. Ep 116116: Streamline Your Design Business with Erinn Valencich of StyleRow
As designers and business owners, we are often managing a lot at once and using multiple different programs to do it all. In this episode, Erinn Valencich, founder of StyleRow, joins us to talk about this amazing platform that every designer can benefit from having. As a designer herself, Erinn realized that all of us were using 5 or more different programs to interact with our teams, vendors, and clients—there was no program that did it all. And so she brought together a team and built one! We talk about the StyleRow platform and why streamlining our processes through one program is valuable and essential—not just for our experience as the business owner, but also for our client’s experience. The Design Coven will be doing a virtual workshop with Erinn on Friday, July 7, where she’ll talk more about the program and how she’s built her career in the industry. If you’d like to join us, become a member at designcoven.com/join. The recording will be available to Pro members.About ErinnErinn Valencich, better known as Erinn V, is an entrepreneur who started her entrepreneurial career at an early age. Graduating from high school early, she skipped college and went straight to work, garnering an incredible professional resume in the lifestyle space with brands such as eBay, Maxwell House, Oprah, Betty Crocker, The Today Show, The View and HGTV all before the age of 24. She then founded a design firm, a furniture brand, has six licensed collections and is the visionary founder behind a software company to streamline and power the luxury furnishings industry, StyleRow. Ep 115115: Small Living & Sustainable Design with Curtis and Christina
This week’s episode is a replay that’s taking us back to Episode 14, Small Living & Sustainable Design with Curtis and Christina Micklish. I want to highlight this episode again because of the important discussion we have around sustainability. We talk about how to make small spaces both beautiful and functional (which Curtis and Christina do very well) and about the specific choices we can make when building or remodeling homes to reduce our overall footprint and protect our environment. Even if you listened to this episode when it first aired, there’s so much we cover in this episode that I’m sure you’ll find something new to inspire you the second time around! Plus, this is an important topic that we can all benefit from a regular refresh on.About Christina & CurtisAgainst their Real Estate agent's advice, Christina and Curtis bought a fixer with "good bones" 3 years into their unwed relationship. A 5 year renovation turned into 9 with the two realizing that 1,700 sq. ft. on nearly an acre of land was not the life they hoped for. They wanted a life of less that offered freedom to experience more. Letting it all go to live in a 425 sq. ft. Hillcrest treehouse made Curtis' recent project, Cayuca, an attainable and sustainable concept.Featured in this episodeFeatured deck: Inner Compass CardsFeatured candle: Mithras CandleFeatured beverage: Nova Kombucha - Watermelon Lime, Little Dragon TeaCurtis also references Our Breath Collective as part of his regular practice.Connect with Christina & CurtisWebsites:Mollismollis.comUrbanistguide.comMicklish.comCayucahillcrest.comInstagram:@christinamicklish @urbanistguide @micklishstudioAre you an interior designer or are you interested in Holistic Interior Design? Ep 113113: Designing with Intent: Using Biomorphic Design to Create Spaces for Wellness
In this solo episode, I’m diving into a practice you may already be incorporating as a holistic interior designer, but aren’t fully aware of: Biomorphic Design. Biomorphic Design is an approach to interior design that incorporates natural forms and organic shapes that are found in nature. It can really enhance the overall well-being of those who will be spending time in these spaces, as it reconnects them to nature and brings in balance and harmony. I share eight ways you can incorporate Biomorphic Design into a space using materials and textures.Featured in this EpisodeFeatured deck: Your Wise Animal BodyAre you an interior designer or are you interested in Holistic Interior Design? Ep 112112: Sacred Spaces Series with Madouk Collection: Creating Intentional Spaces
In our fourth episode in the Sacred Spaces Series with Madouk Collection, Taylor and I talk about the importance of being intentional when we create spaces for our clients and for ourselves. The spaces we spend the most time in have the ability to either drain our energy or help us recharge it, which is why it is important to design rooms with intention—and buy the products that are placed in them with intention. This means understanding where and how products are made as well as how we want to use them and how we want them to make us feel. As an example, Taylor explains how Madouk Collection rugs are infused with intention through a truly special process. This episode will inspire you to look more closely at what you put in a space and how it can function on both a physical and spiritual level.About MadoukMadouk Collection helps eco-conscious and socially aware people dealing with the difficulty in finding genuinely ethical and sustainable products achieve a stylish and comfortable living space through offering a carefully curated selection of ethically sourced, handmade rugs and home décor items. We’re talking about brand voice this week with online business manager and mentor Jazmin Cornejo. Jazmin shares her journey as an entrepreneur, including how she created two distinct voices for her two brands and how her branding helps draw in her ideal clients. We talk about how we can better embrace ourselves as brands, and, at the same time, why it’s okay for our brands to evolve and to not be who we are 24/7. I also share some of my personal struggles with brand voice and how I overcame them. Some would say she is a little bit bold & spicy - a Scorpio rebel at heart! She does things to the beat of her own drum and wants to show others how to do the same. She’s a little bit woo-woo, and if you know anything about Human Design, she’s a Projector so essentially a natural-born guide, a master of working smarter, not harder, and only wants to work 5-6 hours a day, which is why easy automation, tasks that move the needle and are effective are her jam! She’s a networking queen and knows the importance of her community! You gotta treat them like fine wine and give nothing but top-notch customer service! She wants to make everyday life easier for you so you can live in your ZONE OF BRILLIANCE! Ep 94094: Artist Spotlight: Kelsey Brookes
ESan Diego-based artist Kelsey Brookes joins me for this month’s Artist Spotlight. We have a wonderful conversation about his background in art and science, what led him to pursue art full time, and what inspires his work. His process and experiences in many ways relate to our process as Holistic Interior Designers, practically and creatively. His work would make a lovely addition to your projects, so be sure to check out his show at Quint Gallery! The Design Coven will be doing an artist tour and talk with Kelsey at Quint Gallery on Wednesday, April 5th. If you’d like to join us and become part of the Design Coven, head to designcoven.com/join.Guest Bio Kelsey Brookes is a former scientist who uses his background in biological and empirical methodology to create a new genre of art. His practice takes ideas and forms found in logic and natural systems (molecular and atomic structure, number sequences etc.) and creates art that blurs the boundaries between science and art. This methodology becomes the instrument used to create lively and colorful work that is both meticulously crafted and conceptually rigorous. His detailed paintings and sculptures find a balance between the normally opposing philosophies of subjectivity and objectivity, as well as concept and aesthetic. Diving into the discoveries of the physicist, mathematicians and chemist as only a scientist can then reducing and express that knowledge to the nonscientific world in the form of image and color as only an artist can.Brookes has had solo exhibitions in La Jolla, Los Angeles, New York, Detroit, London and Berlin. His work was featured as the cover art for the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ 2012 “I’m With You record and The Flaming Lips’ 2013 “Stone Roses” LP. KELSEY BROOKES: Psychedelic Space is the first monograph of the artist’s artwork and examines three years of work and four solo exhibitions. His work belongs in esteemed private collections, as well as the public permanent collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, and the Frederick R. Weisman Foundation.Featured in this episodeFeatured candle: Beeswax candle from Mithras CandleFeatured Tarot deck: Radiant Crystal Cards by Bouchette DesignConnect with KelseyLinks:WebsiteInstagramCosmic Symmetries at Quint GalleryAre you an interior designer or are you interested in Holistic Interior Design? Ep 90090: How Procrastination Can Move Your Interior Design Business Forward
In this solo episode, I explain how procrastination can actually help our interior design businesses grow. After listening to a book on Audible called Who Not How by Dan Sullivan and Dr. Benjamin Hardy, I realized that the tasks I was procrastinating on were the ones I needed to hand off to others. I stopped focusing so much on how I was going to get these tasks done and instead found who could help me get them done. I share which tasks I’ve handed off and how that has helped me take my business to the next level. Ep 84084: Artist Spotlight: Taylor Chapin
This week I welcome artist Taylor Chapin to the podcast to tell us about her journey in the art world and how she came to embrace life as an artist. Taylor also explains her process and the main theme you can find in her work, which is commentary on our consumer culture. Artwork is an important part of our designs, and knowing more about the work of local artists like Taylor can help you design something truly unique. Listen in and consider her pieces for your next project! In this episode, I refer to Episode 50 with Andrew Utt of ICA. If you missed it or would like to revisit that conversation, you can check it out here.Guest Bio Working in both oil and acrylic, Taylor Chapin's paintings examine advertising, branding, superficiality, and the construction of value under the lens of American neoliberal capitalism. Her work questions our mindless drive toward industrialized American consumerism, the contents of which fill and fetishize our interior and exterior spaces. She reimagines mundane consumer goods emphasizing their inherent banality while simultaneously enshrining them, questioning how value is manufactured and challenging the perceptions of what is real/unreal, valuable/valueless.She is drawn to the allure of what lies underneath. She drapes, wraps, and covers with various fabrics to transform once recognizable forms into abstracted shapes, semi-composed inklings of what lies below. It is this illusory quality of implied volume and depth that bemuses and betrays the two dimensional space of the stretched canvas, allowing the painted surface to become an additional layer of the facade.Chapin was born and raised in San Diego, California. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from San Francisco Art Institute and recently graduated with a Master of Fine Arts at University of California San Diego.
