Reacting to the repressive religious policies of England in 1630, over the next ten years, about 20,000 Puritans emigrated from England to Massachusetts and the neighboring colonies during what came to be known as the Puritan migration to New England. Like the Shroud of Turin, many claim that North America’s most venerated Christian relic holds a blessed and sacred image formed in 1531, a decade after the conquest of Mesoamerica by Spanish Conquistador Hernan Cortez. With some 17,000 Puritans migrating to New England by the mid-1630s, Harvard University was founded in anticipation of the need for training clergy for the new commonwealth, then known as a "church in the wilderness". Let’s wrap-up the fascinating life, times, deeds, and exploits of Samuel de Champlain (1567-1635), the Father of New France. In 1629 Champlain suffered the humiliation of having to surrender his almost starving garrison to an English fleet that appeared before Quebec. He was taken to England as a prisoner. Peace, however, had been declared between England and France before the surrender, and New France was accordingly restored to the French. Champlain returned from Europe to spend his few remaining years. He became governor of New France in 1633 and died in his beloved Quebec City 2 years later on Christmas Day, 1635. Before the group of Puritan colonists left England for the New World in 1630, John Winthrop (1588-1649) delivered an inspirational final message filled with the hope for what America could become.
