In early colonial Virginia, indentured servitude was the dominant form of labor. However, as more and more indentured servants completed their contracts and demanded land, planters grew concerned about the growing number of landless, disgruntled men. New England’s Narragansett tribe sided with the colonists during an armed conflict that took place in 1636 and ended in 1638 known as the Pequot War—between the Pequot tribe and an alliance of the colonists from the Massachusetts Bay, Plymouth, and Saybrook colonies and their allies from the Narragansett and Mohegan tribes. The Kingdom of Saguenay was a legendary, mythical, fanciful country rich in gold and diamonds supposedly located, according to the Natives, inland of present-day Quebec City. Adventurer Jacques Cartier tried in vain to reach this realm on several occasions. Jacques Cartier led his third and last expedition to the St.-Lawrence river valley in 1541. A new headquarters was established a few miles upstream from the Amerindian village of Stadacona, near the present site of Quebec City. This time Cartier was to be followed by Jean Francois de la Rocque, sieur de Roberval, with a party of colonists. After a wait which lasted through the following winter, Cartier set sail for home, only to meet Roberval’s party in three tall ships in the harbor of what is now St. John’s, Newfoundland. Diamonds of Canada, mined by Jacques Cartier's men at the mouth of Rivière du Cap-Rouge proved to be worthless quartz. Cartier’s "treasure" is remembered in the name of Québec’s Cape Diamond or Cap aux Diamants and also in the French proverb "Faux comme un diamant du Canada", "As false as Canadian diamonds." Saint Marie de l'Incarnation (1599-1672) was a French Ursuline nun. As part of a group of sisters sent to New France in 1639 to establish the Ursuline Order, Marie was crucial in the spread of Catholicism in New France. She was a religious author and has been credited with founding the first girls' school in the New World. Saint François de Laval (1623-1708) was a French Catholic prelate who served as Apostolic Vicar of New France from 1658-74 and as Bishop of Quebec from 1674 until he retired due to poor health in 1688. He continued to work in New France until his death in 1708. He was declared a Saint in 2014. First known European penetration of the interior of the continent through the St. Lawrence River gateway took place in 1535, when Jacques Cartier returned as leader of a new expedition. Pressing upstream in three small vessels, he reached the Amerindian village of Stadacona, near the present site of the city of Quebec, Canada. At Stadacona, Cartier and his followers passed a bitter winter with the help of chief Donnacona. Many of his party died from cold and scurvy before he could set sail for France the following spring. The Society of Priests of Saint-Sulpice, better known as the Sulpicians, is a society and congregation of Catholic men, named after the Church of Saint-Sulpice in Paris dedicated to Sulpitius the Pious— a 7th-century French bishop and saint. The Sulpicians played a major role in the founding of the city of Montreal, where they engaged in missionary activities, trained priests and constructed the Saint-Sulpice Seminary, the second oldest structure in the city, constructed during the 1680s and still located in Old Montreal. First Intendant of New France, Jean Talon (1626-94) was a French colonial administrator appointed by King Louis XIV and his minister, Jean-Baptiste Colbert, to serve as the Intendant of Justice, Public Order and Finances in Canada, Acadia and Newfoundland for two terms: 1665-68 and 1670-72. Talon attempted to change the economic base of the burgeoning colony from fur trading to agriculture, but found this could not be accomplished without a larger population. To this end, Talon arranged for settlers to come to New France, including over 800 women known as the King's Daughters. He also tried to diversify the economy by involving the private sector, introducing new crops such as flax and hops for making beer, by starting a shipyard and lumber industry, and by encouraging mining. He started the first commercial brewery in Canada, La Brasserie du Roy, in Quebec City in 1668.
