Spanish Conquistador Pedro Menéndez de Avilés routed the French Florida colony in 1565 and slaughtered the Protestant Huguenots. Three years later, French nobleman and soldier Dominique de Gourgues returned to the area, and, with the help of Native allies, massacred the Spanish garrison in retaliation. The Saturiwa were a Timucua chiefdom centered on the mouth of the St. Johns River in what is now Jacksonville, Florida. One of the 500 indigenous nations & cultures that blanketed North America, they were a prominent political force in the early days of European settlement in Florida, forging friendly relations and alliances with the French Huguenot settlers at Fort Caroline in Saturiwa territory, in 1564-65. The Saturiwa are so called after their chief at the time of contact with the Europeans, King Saturiwa, who was sovereign over thirty other chiefs and their villages. During colonial North America, a bright, icy, small Solar System body passed by Earth and was observed by English astronomer Edmond Halley (1656-1742). Its tail was over 96 million miles long of dust and gas blown out from the coma surrounding its nucleus. Halley's calculations predicted the comet would return in 1758, and it did. The Comet has been observed throughout history, including in North America. Halley noticed that comets appeared in 1531, 1607, and 1682, all about 76 years apart. He used Isaac Newton's law of gravity to calculate the orbits of the comets. He concluded that these comets were actually the same comet returning on a long elliptical orbit around the sun. In May of 1673, French-Canadian explorer, Louis Jolliet (1645-1700), along with French Jesuit missionary Father Marquette(1637-75), departed from Northern Michigan with two canoes and five voyageurs of French-Indian ancestry. Gallic Wars were waged between 58 and 50 BC by the Roman general Julius Caesar against the peoples of Gaul (present-day France). Gallic tribes, including the Averni led by the Celt chieftain Vercingetorix, fought to defend their homelands against an aggressive Roman campaign. The Wars culminated in the decisive Battle of Alesia in 52 BC, in which a complete Roman victory resulted in the expansion of the Roman Republic over the whole of Gaul. The Conquest of Gaul brought Roman occupation and influence to a land later to become France, one of North America’s major European founding nations.
