Events | What Ails the Working Class in America?

America has been a notably hard-working society for most of its history—but has become much less so in recent decades. Labor-force participation, especially among men of prime working age, has fallen to levels not seen since the Great Depression and is particularly low in certain regions of the Middle West and South. The decline of work has coincided with declining health status and longevity and high levels of drug addiction.Policy analysts and political leaders have offered widely differing explanations for these discouraging trends, from trade policies and globalization to welfare policies, cultural upheavals, and regulatory suppression of economic opportunities. Their ideas for reversing course have important implications not only for national social and economic welfare, but also for partisan politics, as working-class Americans have been shifting significantly from their traditional home in the Democratic Party to the Republican Party.Join us to learn more about this critical topic as Heritage’s Christopher DeMuth moderates a conversation with Oren Cass (author of The Once and Future Worker: A Vision for the Renewal of Work in America), Nicholas Eberstadt (author of Men Without Work), Iain Murray (author of The Socialist Temptation), and former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum (author of Blue Collar Conservatives: Recommitting to an America That Works). Events | An Agenda for Regaining America’s Maritime Security and Competitiveness

Our nation has fallen behind the threat from China. Beijing’s ongoing maritime aggression and numerous war games have cast doubt on whether our Navy can sustain peace or win in war. Making matters worse, the nation’s shipping, shipbuilding, and merchant marine, on which the nation relies to supply its forces abroad and economy at home, has atrophied to a dangerous state. This vulnerability invites economic blackmail and worse, the inability to sustain the nation’s military in war let alone keep a wartime industry functioning.Yet, our nation still has comparative advantages in which it must invest and leverage to stay ahead of China; large innovative capacity, like-minded partners around the world, and a compelling, prosperous, and energetic democratic society. To prevail in today’s New Cold War, our Navy’s decline must be reversed, and the strategically important maritime industry given the attention it deserves. Hosted on Acast. Events | The Legal Issues Behind the Colorado Ballot Disqualification Case

The Colorado Supreme Court ruled that former President Donald Trump should be struck from the ballot for violating Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which applies to certain officials who have engaged in insurrection or rebellion. Does this Section apply to the former President? Can state officials enforce it in the absence of an implementing statute from Congress? Does this Section still apply in 2024?On February 8, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Trump v. Anderson – what may be one of most important cases the Court has ever considered. Join us on the eve of oral arguments as Heritage’s John Malcolm moderates a discussion of the legal issues with Josh Blackman (co-author of a law review article on the subject), Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita (who is leading a coalition of 27 states supporting Trump), Patrick Strawbridge of Consovoy McCarthy (former Supreme Court clerk who filed an amicus brief for the RNC and NRCC), and Heritage Senior Fellow Hans von Spakovsky. Events | A Decade of Decline: The Need to Restore America’s Military Power

Most Americans do not realize the sorry state the U.S. military is in. Following years of overextension, deployments, and a lack of prioritizing defense spending on what is needed to fight and win America’s wars, the military is far from the strong force built by Ronald Reagan to defeat the Soviets. The tenth edition of The Heritage Foundation’s Index of U.S. Military Strength makes that clear. With adversaries growing in strength and causing chaos in nearly every corner of the globe, coupled with a new Cold War with China, this weakness only makes the world more dangerous. But American military power can be restored if the urgency is felt, and the right actions are taken now.Join us for a conversation with Senator Roger Wicker, followed by a panel with retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg, noted grand strategist Elbridge Colby, and former Green Beret Joe Kent on how we can reverse a decade of decline and restore America’s military power. Events | Inflation: Today's Financial Pandemic

Every American has felt the effects of the staggering surge in inflation in the past few years. In the U.S. and other countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the rise in inflation strongly relates to increases in transfer payments since 2020, the start of the COVID pandemic.Heritage Distinguished Fellow in Economic Thought Dr. Robert Barro has researched this significant inflation spike, and his conclusions may surprise you. Through a conceptual framework based on the government’s intertemporal budget constraint, we can see that the inflation surge is a way to “pay for” part of added government spending by depreciating the real value of public debt. In this framework, more spending triggers more inflation, but higher initial debt and longer debt duration mean lower inflation. This can explain recent inflation rates in 21 economies (20 non-European countries and the Euro area considered as an aggregate). The U.S. is not an outlier, with inflation and the spending surge both moderately above average. The bottom line? Recent inflation surges were triggered by the surges in government spending – i.e., expanded government caused inflation. Learn more about how big government makes your everyday expenses more costly as Dr. Barro joins Heritage Executive Vice President Derrick Morgan. Hosted on Acast. The horrific attacks on Israel have served as a striking illustration of the moral rot present on American college campuses. The Power Hour is a weekly podcast that discusses the most interesting energy and environmental policy issues of the day with top national experts. In this episode, Jack and Mike McKenna, President of MWR Strategies and Heritage Foundation Visiting Fellow discuss a recently introduced bill that would establish a tariff, or should we say tax, on imported items. The bill’s sponsors insist the tariff is not a tax but Mike and Jack’s analysis suggests otherwise. But the problem with the carbon tariff is not just that it will increase prices for American families and businesses, it establishes an important foundation on which more carbon dioxide-based regulation will surely be built. If you want to know why carbon tariffs are really just a tax by another name, and how they could impact the US economy for years to come, you will want to check this one out. Are we right? Events | Holding Federal Public Health Agencies Accountable: Lessons from COVID

This past year, the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, chaired by Rep. Brad Wenstrup (R-OH), has conducted several outstanding oversight investigations into the performance of federal agencies that failed to respond effectively to the national medical emergency. These investigations revealed that federal officials failed to provide compelling information on the origin of the pandemic. They confused the public with mixed messages on the rationale and effectiveness of masking and provided weak scientific justifications for comprehensive vaccine mandates and extended school closures.Three federal agencies that have major responsibilities in responding to a national health emergency are the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Congress needs to reassess these agencies, clarify their roles and missions, and retarget funding, enabling them to cope more effectively in a future medical emergency.HHS former General Counsel Robert Charrow, American Enterprise Institute's Dr. Brian Miller, and Paragon Health Institute’s Dr. Joel Zinberg will address these and related issues. Events | Abortion Pills: What’s Next?

After the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit ruled in August that the U.S. Food & Drug Administration had to restore critical safeguards for chemical abortion drugs and prevent their shipment by mail, the U.S. Department of Justice requested that the Supreme Court review the 5th Circuit’s ruling. As the nation waits for the Court’s decision, questions abound. Can Congress prevent the shipment of abortion drugs by mail? May states restrict abortion pills, even though they have been deemed “safe and effective” by the FDA? Did the FDA follow the law in approving abortion pills in the first place? Events | The Trump Indictments: Is the Justice System Rigged?

So, is the justice system rigged and if so, what can and should be done about it?Please join us for a lively discussion with three former high-ranking officials within the Justice Department as they share their views on this important issue. Events | Faith of Our Fathers: Why Has Christianity Been in Decline?

Few would be surprised to learn that children of religious fathers are more likely than their peers to be religious as adults. A recent study goes beyond that, however. The Communio Nationwide Study on Faith and Relationships reveals that the collapse in marriage and the resulting decline in resident fatherhood may offer the best explanation for the decline of Christianity in the United States. These conclusions are drawn from the results of a nationwide survey of 19,000 Sunday church attendees conducted during worship in 112 evangelical, Protestant, and Catholic congregations in 13 different states.Join us for a conversation with the founder and president of Communio, JP De Gance, about this research and what we can do in light of it.Listen to other Heritage podcasts: https://www.heritage.org/podcastsSign up for The Agenda newsletter — the lowdown on top issues conservatives need to know about each week: https://www.heritage.org/agendaListen to podcasts from The Daily Signal: https://www.dailysignal.com/podcasts/Get daily conservative news you can trust from our Morning Bell newsletter: DailySignal.com/morningbellsubscription Hosted on Acast.
