Navigating the Healthcare System: Understanding the Biggest Challenges in Healthcare Today
Navigating the Healthcare System: Understanding the Biggest Challenges in Healthcare Today Check out our fundamentals of wellness course: https://www.stillmanwellness.com/join-fow Leland Stillman Integrative Medicine (stillmanmd.com) Learn how we can help you. https://linktr.ee/stillmanmd https://linktr.ee/JimLaird Dr Stillman Masterclass https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLxRRz3RExqpn_IJzI2qRW9O4dUFRkjyPA [00:02] According to Dr. Stillman, navigating the broken healthcare system can be challenging. People often struggle to find good healthcare, lack faith in the medical system, and have difficulty finding trustworthy practitioners who treat them with respect. Doctors frequently fail to listen to patients and offer reasonable treatment options. Furthermore, insurance companies charge excessive prices for labs and imaging studies, and accessing care and referrals can be difficult. [04:28] The current healthcare system is inefficient and frustrating for patients. It often leads to unnecessary tests and medications driven by insurance coverage and legal concerns for doctors. Patients experience long wait times and rushed appointments, resulting in dissatisfaction. This dissatisfaction has even led to burnout among doctors. Dr. Stillman believes a better approach is needed, combining conventional medicine with integrative and affordable care. [08:32] To address the issue of accessibility and affordability, Dr. Stillman evolved the practice. Initially, handling all the tasks increased prices, making it expensive for people. However, with the help of a hired assistant, a program was created that combined group coaching and one-on-one sessions, allowing them to serve more people. Annual plans were also introduced, incorporating a nurse practitioner and health coach for more affordable and comprehensive care. [13:00] Dr. Stillman offers a program called Fundamentals of Wellness for group coaching. This program focuses on educating and guiding individuals in accessing healthcare and understanding the specialists or tests they may need. It also prioritizes mindset and emotional well-being during coaching sessions, as accountability and regular interaction lead to better outcomes. [17:11] The practice offers coaching for wellness and medical assistance. Their services cover fundamentals and education on labs and results, catering to busy executives seeking personalized attention. They provide group coaching, one-on-one calls, and quarterly labs, aiming for consistent care, progress tracking, and guidance. In comparison to other services, their price point is relatively lower. [20:50] While functional medicine offers affordability, it lacks personalized coaching. Functional medicine practitioners charge high fees per hour and often have long wait times for appointments. They tend to focus more on lab results and supplements rather than addressing lifestyle and diet. Patients require personalized coaching and someone who will listen to their problems. [24:22] Dr. Stillman emphasizes the importance of lifestyle in maintaining health. Supplements should be used to target specific issues rather than adopting a blanket approach. Building good habits and sustainable results through lifestyle changes is crucial. Supplements alone won't be effective without lifestyle improvements. Dr. Stillman also mentions functional foods and healing with food, highlighting the significance of circadian rhythm and sun exposure. Additionally, many thyroid issues are not solely due to hormone deficiencies. [28:18] Dr. Stillman believes that poor nutrition and stress management contribute to various health issues. Eating habits and nutrient deficiencies play a significant role, and individuals may be unaware of their nutritional deficiencies. Simple mistakes in diet can lead to malnourishment. Proper stress management is essential for overall well-being and can impact the thyroid gland. Dr. Stillman's practice offers personalized wellness programs tailored to individual needs and goals.
Experience the Power of Infrared Sauna: Insights from Brian Richards' Interview
Experience the Power of Infrared Sauna: Insights from Brian Richards' Interview Sauna Space Simple, effective saunas. https://sauna.space/stillman Discount STILLMAN5 From Brian Richards, SaunaSpace founder in 2008, I discovered how life-changing a sauna could be. Insomnia, adrenal fatigue, and acne were getting in the way of my everyday life. When an alternative medicine doctor recommended near infrared sauna therapy, I was grateful for a solution that didn’t involve prescription drugs, but there weren’t many options for near infrared saunas. Within days I started to notice changes, and continued treatment brought all of my symptoms to a halt. I became obsessed with perfecting the technology so I could make it accessible to everyone. Thirteen years later, we have a team of great engineers and craftspeople who share my mission: To gives everyone a natural way to relax, get relief, and live their healthiest lives. I’m proud of how many people we’ve helped in that time, and we’re determined to keep improving so we can change lives for many years to come. Historically, diets were high in magnesium, but modern diets lack sufficient magnesium. Depleted soils lead to low magnesium levels in plants and animals. Chronic stress further depletes magnesium in the body. Maintaining optimal magnesium levels is challenging. Normal reference ranges for magnesium levels have been adjusted down. Keeping magnesium levels at the upper end of the range is beneficial for overall health. [03:52] Magnesium deficiency is linked to practically every disease. Magnesium is necessary for metabolic reactions and vitamin D production. Low magnesium levels can result in low vitamin D levels. Stress and unhealthy diet contribute to magnesium deficiency. The reference ranges for lab results are based on a sick population. Hair tissue mineral analysis provides a better understanding of magnesium levels. [07:32] Low magnesium levels can result in a loss of energy. Magnesium is crucial for overall energy production in the cell and cellular bioenergetics. Inadequate magnesium intake can lead to fatigue and sluggishness. [11:10] Magnesium deficiency can cause symptoms like brain fog, fatigue, anxiety, headaches, and pain syndromes. Magnesium deficiency is often associated with panic attacks and can be improved with supplementation. People with GI illnesses may have impaired magnesium absorption. Individuals on PPIs, H2 blockers, or antacids may have difficulty absorbing magnesium. Low magnesium levels have been linked to neurological disorders like dementia, movement disorders, and autism in children. It is important to get lab testing done to determine magnesium levels and identify other vitamin or mineral deficiencies. Getting magnesium from food is usually better than taking supplements, as food comes with other necessary nutrients. Taking supplements that do not come in a complete package may create imbalances. [14:37] Tracking diet to get enough magnesium through meals: Smoothies with chia seeds, oats, and molasses are a good source of magnesium. Sirloin steak, brown rice, and spinach provide magnesium for lunch. Sockeye salmon, bone broth, quinoa, pine nuts, and Swiss chard offer magnesium for dinner. [18:04] A 2,000 calorie day with a focus on protein and magnesium: The diet includes 160 grams of protein, which is beneficial for muscle gain and fat burning. The diet provides 800 milligrams of magnesium, almost double the recommended intake. Different foods vary significantly in magnesium content, such as pumpkin seeds (160mg), chia seeds (100mg), and pine nuts (65mg). Nutrient variations in different foods have a long-term impact on overall health. Knowing serving sizes based on fist size or handful is essential for optimal nutrition.

Tradeoffs understanding goals, adaption and the consequences of goals (audio starts at 3:15)
Tradeoffs understanding goals, adaption and the consequences of goals (audio starts at 3:15) Check out our fundamentals of wellness course: https://www.stillmanwellness.com/join-fow Learn how we can help you: https://linktr.ee/stillmanmd https://linktr.ee/JimLaird Dr Stillman Masterclass https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLxRRz3RExqpn_IJzI2qRW9O4dUFRkjyPA [03:20] The importance of understanding trade-offs in pursuing fitness goals is highlighted. Misunderstanding these trade-offs often leads to counterproductive activities. [06:37] A balanced approach to fitness is emphasized as being key to achieving fitness goals. This approach incorporates both strength training and cardiovascular exercise, alongside sufficient sleep, a healthy diet and beneficial outdoor activity. [09:37] There's a caution against traditional powerlifting programs, as these can often be an obstacle preventing athletes' optimal sport performance. The suggestion recommends modifying exercises and reducing weights to achieve the positions needed for a specific sport. [12:15] Adaptability is singled out as a key quality in successful athletes, enabling them to overcome various obstacles and problems. In particular, intellectual understanding of a game can often compensate for a lack of athleticism. [15:05] The choice of sports should be influenced by an individual's specific body type and attributes. A reference is made to Soviet-era programs which supported such selections based on mental characteristics and body structures. [17:51] A critique is made of the United States' approach to athletic development, with an excessive focus on winning often leading to negative consequences, such as athlete burnout and injuries. This is contrasted with more conservative approaches from countries with a smaller talent pool, such as Canada. [20:26] There's an acknowledgement that competing at a high level often requires some degree of health sacrifice. Athletes are advised to track their body's markers to ensure they strike a balance between pushing their bodies to adapt, without overexerting themselves. [23:00] Lastly, the speaker advocates for improving health by spending time outdoors and benefiting from natural light exposure. The negative health effects of indoor environments, characterized by artificial lighting and consistent temperatures, are highlighted. Light, as a crucial, yet often neglected health factor, is spotlighted as a powerful influence on our biology.

The speaker challenges societal beliefs and emphasizes the importance of struggle in life. [00:03] Happiness is not a destination, but a way of traveling. Happiness is experienced along the way, not as an end result. Society's pursuit of happiness often leads to disappointment. [02:47] The lack of struggle and manual labor in modern society decreases physical fitness and the ability to handle intensity. Modern conveniences have made life easy, but humans crave work and struggle. People chase cheap dopamine due to a lack of sunlight and manual labor, which provide fulfillment. [05:07] Embrace struggles and challenges to improve. Chasing happiness through materialistic things is a myth. Struggles and adversities teach us valuable lessons. [07:33] Success requires hard work and dedication. Success is not guaranteed and requires consistent practice and effort. Athletes like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant exemplify dedication to achieve success. [09:49] Athletes excel in business due to their ability to win and lose. Playing on losing teams can help athletes improve. Athletes know how to work through difficult situations and coaches. [12:01] Protein should be the foundation of every meal. Recommended daily allowance of protein is too low. 0.7 grams of protein per pound of body weight is needed for most people. [14:15] Traditional cultures adapted their diets to the seasons and light cycles. Even the Inuit varied their diet with seasons, eating more berries in summer. Modern society's artificial environment is not ideal for our biology. [00:01] Wi-Fi and cell phone radiation disrupts cellular function and structure. Microwave and radio wave radiation disrupts hydrogen bonding networks and impairs bioenergetics. History of wireless radiation and its use in military technology. [04:42] The military-industrial complex suppressed information about the negative effects of non-native EMF radiation. The Soviet Union recognized the negative effects of non-native EMF radiation and developed safety levels. Western scientists have not studied the negative effects of non-native EMF radiation due to fear of upsetting the military-industrial complex. There is an open question about the harm level of non-native EMF radiation on the populace. [09:08] The cell uses light to structure water and create a battery The cell's energy production is based on the production of light in the mitochondria Anything that disrupts this cellular battery will reduce the cell's ability to generate energy [13:48] EMF radiation is a stressor that degrades the quality of life and creates stress on the organism. EMF radiation is an additional stressor that requires more work to mitigate and overcome. The EMF radiation is causing problems and affecting the blood-brain barrier. [17:47] EMF exposure can lead to nutritional deficiencies and altered brain metabolism. EMF exposure creates an increased need for nutrients, leading to nutritional deficiencies. Exposure to EMF alters glucose metabolism in the brain, which can have significant health implications. [21:42] Exposure to wireless devices can lead to illness and disease. Long-term exposure to microwave and radio wave radiation can impair cell structure and function. Exposure to wireless devices is a slow drain on cells and can cause vague symptoms, but the increasing number of devices in the environment is a cause for concern. [25:47] EMF mitigation can have therapeutic value. EMF exposure can confound epidemiological studies. Mitigating EMF exposure can lead to significant pain reduction. The world's attitude towards smoking changed in one generation, and the same can happen with EMF exposure. [29:43] Reduce EMF exposure by hardwiring devices and unplugging Wi-Fi router EMF exposure leads to fatigue, exhaustion, and anxiety Controlling controllable factors and getting outside helps mitigate EMF exposure.

Health Is a Process and a Journey - Not a Destination
Health Is a Process and a Journey - Not a Destination https://linktr.ee/stillmanmd https://linktr.ee/JimLaird Dr. Stillman and Jim discuss the importance of health as a journey, not a destination, and the need for personalized approaches. Jim shares his personal health journey. Good health is a journey, not a destination [00:01] Quick fixes are not always the solution. Addressing stress and diet is important for good health. Stress management is crucial for overall health [02:50] Fundamental habits and Space Foundation help in managing stress. Supplement protocols and lab testing alone cannot solve stress-related issues. Listen to your body's warning signs and make changes before it's too late [05:30] Unresolved issues can lead to harmful habits. The details of comprehensive functional medicine lab testing can help identify individual needs. Conventional medical approach lacks comprehensive lab testing [07:58] Functional medicine doctors often test too many things and prescribe supplements without coaching patients. Root causes of health problems often involve lifestyle factors that need to be addressed. Modulating autonomic tone affects digestion, heart rate, and brain function [10:36] Subconscious modulation is driven by processes within the central nervous system and energetic/physical inputs. Supplements are often used to enable pushing harder instead of learning to relax and take care of the body. Addressing underlying problems is better than relying on supplements [13:09] Supplements can only help cope for a limited time. Enabling behavior in medical system leads to overuse of supplements. Instant gratification is a big problem in society [15:45] Rewards should be given to those who work hard. Technology should be used mindfully to set up the life you want. Prioritize restorative challenges over beatdowns [18:04] Adjust your training according to what's going on in your life. Don't make pushing through an emergency or competition situation your norm.

Uncovering the Shocking Risks of "Weight Loss" Drugs
Discussion on the Problems with Semoglutide and the Importance of Considering All Consequences of Weight Loss Strategies https://linktr.ee/JimLaird https://linktr.ee/stillmanmd [00:02] In recent times, the weight loss drug semoglutide has gained attention for its potential long-term problems with weight loss and body composition optimization. As quoted by Albertson Georgie, "We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them." This statement emphasizes the need to think differently when addressing weight loss strategies and their consequences. [04:35] Semoglutide may cause a significant proportion of weight loss to be lean body mass, which includes bone and muscle. This highlights the importance of focusing on how we look and feel rather than just the number on the scale. Body proportions also impact exercise performance, and it's essential for individuals, especially women, to prioritize feeling good in their bodies rather than conforming to societal standards. [08:54] Modern medicine often focuses on managing symptoms rather than addressing underlying causes, which can be unsustainable and unhealthy in the long run. Losing lean body mass can lead to falls, broken bones, and even mortality. Traditional exercise strategies, such as those pushed by trainers at the gym, can also harm long-term health by limiting movement options and causing stress on the body. [12:55] The healthcare system is currently facing numerous challenges due to the weight of disease created by doctors' treatment and prescription patterns. There is a need to shift the focus towards health and wellness, nutrition, and teaching doctors how to be healthy themselves. Understanding the physiology behind long-term dietary and exercise habits is crucial for achieving sustainable weight loss. [21:07] Accountability and daily low-level movement are essential for overall health. Most people avoid exercises they struggle with, but these are the ones they need to work on the most. Additionally, the importance of maintaining a healthy circadian rhythm and spending time outdoors should not be overlooked. [25:02] Simplification is key to successful coaching and wellness routines. It's important to simplify things so people can do them well and build on that foundation. Individualization is also crucial, as everyone is different and may require more or less of certain aspects in their wellness journey. [28:53] Connecting to a positive purpose is vital for healing and maintaining motivation. Identifying one's passion and purpose can help individuals stay committed to their health and wellness goals. Pain can keep people around you, but connecting to a positive purpose instead can lead to more sustainable and fulfilling results. In conclusion, it's essential to consider all consequences of weight loss strategies, including the potential problems with drugs like semoglutide. By thinking differently and focusing on a holistic approach to health and wellness, individuals can achieve sustainable weight loss and improved well-being.
