We tend to think getting scammed is usually on the buyer's end. But it's very common for sellers to get scammed as well. Today I will dive into the top 9 Etsy seller scams out there so you can stay clear of these scumbag fraudsters. Here's a summary of what's covered: Claiming there was an issue accepting payment for their order and sending you a fake QR code through Messages saying that you need to scan it to confirm their purchase. Asking for additional items to be added to their order. For example, asking sellers to purchase and include a highly-priced gift card with their order and promising to pay them back later. Claiming they want to purchase items listed in a link that is actually malware or a link to a phishing site. Offering to send you more money than you are asking for your item? This is known as an overpayment scam. Insisting you reply via a personal email address, off of Etsy? A buyer who immediately insists on communicating off of our site may be questionable. Your email is never required for a buyer to complete a purchase. (you shouldn't be communicating through email if you're a buyer or seller) Seeming not to have read or looked at your listing, based on their vague questions. (could be a red flag) Refusing to go through Etsy Checkout, thereby disqualifying the transaction from any Etsy protection. Having a particular interest in an item of relatively high value. Scammers tend to focus on mid and high-value listings. The new make an offer feature is live on Etsy for everyone... But it doesn't come without flaws. I cover this hot topic along with some other important Etsy news going on this week. Here's a summary of what's included in this new episode: Etsy launches more registries. Gift and baby gift. You can access them via: https://www.etsy.com/registry This is a great way to attract buyers and curate a catalog for your loved ones. Etsy and eBay are testing moving product descriptions further down the page. This is causing concerns buyers won't understand fully what they're buying or miss crucial information. The companies explained they want to move up item specs further up the page. One eBay seller complained that they saw sponsored listings in the middle of their listing above the description. I haven't heard of this happening on etsy, but there are related listings on the bottom. Most buyers do not read the descriptions, especially on eBay. Pictures/video tell the story which is even more of a reason to make sure they are clear. It's an all-new episode of Etsy seller news! I want to keep you updated on all the stuff you need to know as a seller so you can't focus on growing your business. Here's what's going on in today's episode: -You can earn commission through Etsy's Creator Co program through social media posts. You can apply here: www.creatorco.etsy.com -USPS is changing their rates again on July 9th. There's some good and bad news with the changes. Hey, at least it's not all bad, right? Here are the main changes: Priority Mail rates are getting up to $4.83 cheaper First Class Package & Parcel Select Ground are merging into the new Ground Advantage name. The slower 2-5 day delivery speed stays the same—they're just changing the names. Ground Advantage rates for packages under 1 pound (First Class Package) are staying the same Ground Advantage rates for packages over 1 pound (Parcel Select) are mixed—some rates are increasing up to $1.06, while others are decreasing up to $3. Media Mail rates are increasing by 7% across the board. Signature Confirmation is increasing to $3.40. This new law requires marketplaces to disclose information about sellers such as name and address. The point of the law is to make buying online more transparent and safe. However, sellers do worry about people getting and abusing their personal information. Don't worry I break down the specifics of this law and precisely who will be impacted. Hindsight is always 20/20 of course. But as I've been going through this process of starting, building, running, and growing an Etsy business for the last 10 years I've learned a ton. Most of which was trial by fire. Doing something wrong and then self-correcting. And boy did I do a lot wrong which I've dedicated entire episodes to in the past lol. AI is everyone and now it's taking over marketplaces. You now see tons of AI-generated stuff for sale on etsy such as art, templates, graphics, and more. But the real question is… is this allowed on Etsy? Let's dive into this in today's episode of seller news. Kind of a light Etsy news week so I want to cover a hot newsworthy topic that is of course controversial. Handmade sellers view AI-generated sellers as cutting corners and not handmade since a computer is generating the stuff. But that doesn't mean that it's necessarily not allowed... So I put my detective hat on to try and figure out if Etsy has specifically addressed this. First, let's just distinguish what I'm specifically talking about when it comes to AI-generated. You can have AI programs such as Chatgpi generate ideas and content based on questions you ask. But you still have to use this information to create the end product. So more or less you're using it for research purposes and are still creating the product. I don't think there's anything wrong with using AI this way and I don't believe it would violate any Etsy policies. What I'm specifically talking about is using an AI tool to generate images that you then simply download and put on Etsy for sale without editing them, changing them, or even confirming if you have the right to use them… This I feel is a slippery slow and problematic. This is what I want to figure out.\ First, I searched the web which is always a great idea when you want to find accurate information you can trust.. lol. Two articles came up both saying you CAN sell AI-generated art with one linking to Etsy's policies. So I went right to the source to double-check. I went to Etsy's seller handbook. And here's what Etsy's handmade policy states… I couldn't find anything specific to AI products, but I did review their handmade policies. Based on what I found, even though AI isn't specifically mentioned, I don't see how it's not a violation to use an AI-generated product that you didn't personally design. And I don't see how you would "make" the items unless you're using AI to create a pattern and then make it. But that seems like it's never the case because I think the goal with AI-generated stuff is less work and a quick buck. While I haven't heard of Etsy taking anything AI-generated down, there are a lot of problems with managing this. First, if the seller isn't saying it's AI-generated then it will be really hard to find out, especially if the AI tool is generating original stuff. Second, if it's stated as AI-generated on the listing, then is it completely generated, unaltered, or slightly altered which probably would be allowed. Or is it AI-related content, information, that was completely created by the seller such as ai prompts… ughhh I know confusing… So maybe I'm leaving you with more questions than answers until etsy specifically addresses this... I'll leave you with this... Don't use this as an excuse to give up on your shop. You can't worry about what other people are doing all the time. It's a time and energy such. If you want your Etsy business to succeed I guarantee something like this won't stop you unless you let it. This is just the shiny object of controversy of the day. There will always be a new controversy on the horizon. It will not end with this. Just know this, accept it, and learn to grow a thick skin. It can only bother you, distract you or impede you if you let it. I want to leave you with something to lift your spirits in case what I just said didn't. There is a common belief that Etsy is oversaturated and excessively competitive. This sentiment is frequently used as an explanation for poor shop performance. However, we rarely apply the same logic in our offline lives. So why allow it to hinder us in the virtual world? Reflect upon this: did competition deter you from applying for jobs or colleges? If you participated in sports or joined a band, did the existence of competition make you quit before you even started? Does competition deter you from availing yourself of great sales deals during Black Friday or other sales events? Competition is integral to our culture, particularly in America. It is expected and accepted, rarely causing us to abandon our pursuits or to abstain from trying something new. Therefore, why should the narrative be any different when it comes to starting an online business? Anticipating competition should be part of your business strategy. Let's delve into why competition can be advantageous: 1. **A competitive marketplace is a thriving marketplace.** Strong competition is absent in stagnant markets or in niches that aren't lucrative. The presence of competition implies a robust market. With approximately 5 million sellers to 93 million buyers on Etsy, the market is certainly vibrant. 2. **Competition sustains the market.** The revenue that keeps Etsy thriving is largely due to its competitive nature. A reduction in competition might lead to fewer buyers, making it even more challenging to find success. 3. **Competition guides you towards success.** Familiarize yourself with the top players in your niche; their success stories can offer you valuable lessons. Observe their selling techniques, promotional strategies, pricing, and how they've organized their shops and listings. This information can serve as a roadmap for your own venture. Remember, this doesn't mean directly copying their listings or products, but using their ideas as inspiration for your own unique creations. 4. **Competition helps you stand out through value.** Over time, as your business develops, you can establish customer loyalty and differentiate your shop by offering high-quality products and superior customer service. Many sellers who lack passion or dedication may start to cut corners, creating opportunities for you to excel. 5. **Competition exposes you to what to avoid.** You may observe shops making detrimental decisions or experiencing negative consequences, providing you with insights into mistakes to avoid. 6. **Competition inspires improvement.** It ensures that businesses continuously strive to enhance their offerings for a better consumer experience. Monopolization often leads to complacency and a decline in the quality of the consumer experience. Key areas of focus include clearer policies, removing counterfeit items and listings, easier appeals, transparent communication with sellers, and reducing fraud. These efforts help maintain a marketplace where creativity, authenticity, and diversity thrive. In 2022, investments in automated technology helped remove more than four times as many listings violating the Handmade Policy compared to the previous year. The Etsy Reporting Portal was launched to make reporting intellectual property violations easier, and cases were resolved more quickly. Etsy also invested in its support teams to offer live chat support 24/7 for most topics. As Etsy continues to progress, updates will be shared with the community. Money is tight, and running an Etsy business does require coinage as they said back in the 80s. With that being said there are things you can do to run your business lean so you can squeeze out as much profit as possible. Here are the top tips I cover in this week's podcast: Keep inventory low. Handmade sellers should have little or no inventory until they know what sells. Vintage sellers need more inventory but make sure you're buying what is selling. Use eBay for comps. Do not buy postage at the post office or UPS. Use etsy or third-party shippers such as pirate ship. Buy packaging in bulk online, not locally. Amazon or supplyhut.com are good places to start. Use a thermal printer. It's a bigger cost up front but there will be tons of savings long term. Do everything yourself, and outsource later. If you outsource from the onset you'll always have to rely on someone else. Don't run ads… right away. Use your smartphone and not a fancy camera. Making money online, specifically on Etsy may seem easy or at least that's how it's often presented. Just like how it may be presented as easy to own a mansion, Ferrari, or spend every day on the beach collecting passive income… I've been around the Etsy game for a long time. I've been selling since 2014 to be exact. I've been around the commerce game even longer, since 2000… So I've learned a few things along the way.. or at least I'd like to think so. During that time I've failed a bunch, made tons of mistakes, and have also seen many other sellers do the same. In today's age, I think starting a business or Etsy shop is a little different than years ago. Mainly because we live in the age of social media or social perceptions rather. This is why I want to do this episode and talk about the dark side of selling on etsy. I don't want to be all doom and gloom, but I do want to set the record straight.
