Livin’ The Life: Miljenko Matijevic of Steelheart – EP082

E

In this episode we are livin' the life with Miljenko Matijevic of Steelheart. We catch up with Steelheart's main man Miljenko to talk about his career, the new live album, and what Steelheart fans can expect in 2019. In 1990 when Steelheart finally got their shot to hit the rock scene, the band embodied everything you would want from a band in that era. They had the look, catchy songs, emotional ballads, screeching guitars, energetic live shows, and a singer named Miljenko Matijevic with a multi-octave range that would make your head spin. Through the journey, Steelheart ended up with a varied history. The band had a couple of hit songs of off 2 amazing albums and then quickly fell off the face of the earth after a fluke stage accident. Miljenko rebuilt the band for a stint in 1996, was involved in the movie Rock Star (playing the voice of Marky Mark Wahlberg) in 2001 and then returned to the rock scene for good in 2006. In 2010, Miljenko even did a stint being the lead singer for The Doors. After releasing the acclaimed Through Worlds of Stardust in 2017, Steelheart is back with a live CD/DVD called Rock ‘n Milan. Miljenko Matijevic tells his Growin’ Up Rock story by sharing his humble beginnings, move to America, his start in music, influences, how Steelheart became a MTV smash, handling adversity of the music business, coming back into the scene through movies/TV, success that being a hit in Asia brought and what the future has yet to offer. Miljenko was very transparent and passionate throughout the conversation. You will enjoy the conversation but to truly appreciate everything that Steelheart has to offer, we encourage you to see them live. The experience is energetic and the musicianship is impressive. Under The Influence Of Van Halen – EP079

E

In this episode it's all about the countless number of rock bands under the influence of the mighty Van Halen. In The 80s there was no rock band bigger than the mighty Van Halen. The guitar playing of Eddie Van Halen and the ringmaster antics of David Lee Roth had a lasting effect on every rock band coming up in the 80s and beyond. Given the impression Van Halen made on so many bands we loved back in the 80s and still love today, we thought it fitting to discuss a few different hard rock bands and artist that may have been influenced by Van Halen either in their playing, their look, or their music. See if you agree, the bands we play in this episode may have borrowed a trick or two from the mighty Van Halen. Marc Ferrari – RnR Business Animal – EP078

E

Marc Ferrari is a RnR business animal. Known for being the lead guitar player in Keel and Cold Sweat, Marc has played to thousands of Rock n Roll animals around the world. Marc has done the whole Rockstar thing, but that is just a small stop in his musical journey through life. Some of Marc's career highlights include, writing songs for the 96 Summer Olympic Games, writing and releasing 2 solo records, playing guitar for Crucial Taunt, a fictional band in a couple of the most iconic movies from the 90s Wayne's World. Oh and did we forget to mention that Marc is also a writer. Marc has written two books, a music business book called "Rock Star 101" and a children's book called "Don't Dilly Dally Silly Sally". All of these accomplishments, and they still are probably not his most financially or intellectually biggest success. When Marc's musical career was starting to decline in the early 90s when the fans of hard rock and metal started to turn to grunge, Marc started Mastersource, a music publishing company to license music to TV and movies. He grew that company at the right time and later sold it to Universal Music Publishing. He's an entrepreneur, investor, musician, writer, producer, and in all of that he still found the time to work on a re-release of the cult hard rock record "Break Out", from his band Cold Sweat. We caught up with Marc and discussed some of his days with Keel and some of his many accomplishments, along with the release and re-master of Cold Sweat's one and only record "Break Out" Everyone’s got a Rock N Roll story to tell, so tell us yours @growinuprock.com Like us and leave us a review on our FaceBook page - @growinuprock or Podchaser Follow us on Twitter - @growinuprock Subscribe to our Podcast at the platform of your choice and leave us a review Support Music / Artist / and this Podcast You can help out the Podcast by doing all of your shopping at Amazon using our link below. What The Funk? – EP077

E

What the Funk is going on around the Growin' Up Rock Podcast? In this episode of the podcast, Steven and Sonny get funky while keeping that guitar cranked to 11. They explore a funk rock explosion that seemed to happen at the tail end of the 80s and into the early 90s. Discovering and discussing music by Infectious Grooves, King Of The Hill, Skin, Maggie's Dream, Extreme, Trapeze, Lenny Kravitz, TM Stevens, White Trash, and of course Kiss. There is nothing better than a heavy guitar riff mixed with a big fat funky groove along with those occasional horn sections. The boys at Growin' Up Rock have picked some great ass shakers in tonight episode. Rock n Roll Trivia – Who Are You – EP075

E

It’s a Rock n Roll Trivia Game show of epic proportions where we ask the question Who Are You? We invite our special guest Steve Wright from the Podder The Hell Podcast to come and test his trivial hard rock knowledge against the absent minded Steven Michael who thinks the answer to everything is Van Halen. While we try and figure out who has the most points, we play some killer music by the likes of Lita Ford, Queensryche, Sammy Hagar, Iron Maiden, WASP, Night Ranger, Kiss, Striker, and Blood Of The Sun. Our Gameshow host Sonny “Wink Martindale” Pooni deals out the questions to both Steve's, while mixing in some great music to crank up while on that long holiday road trip. Feel free to play along with us and let us know how you did via our Facebook page link below. Happy Thanksgiving from all of us here at Growin’ Up Rock !!. Matt Jaffe-California’s Golden Rocker – BONUS

E

Matt Jaffe is a singer-songwriter from San Francisco. Relatively unknown in the rest of the United States, this California rocker cut his teeth on open mics around the Bay Area. Matt started pursuing music more seriously when Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads) offered to produce his first record. From his earliest memories of growing up playing classic violin at 5 years old, to playing ANY gig that he was offered regardless of venue size, Matt shares stories about his young career. And he describes what it took to release his third album of original material, The Spirit Catches You. Matt Jaffe was great to speak with and very forthcoming about the music business and how his career is progressing. Matt is an intelligent young man who we believe will have a long, fruitful career. His music has been described as “eclectic, completely unexpected, and undeniably catchy – an effervescent marriage of punk-rock hooks and funky, rockabilly melodies.” Please give Matt Jaffe a listen. When We Were Young with Dan Call- EP074

E

When we were young, we learned a lot about life and rock n roll. This week we catch up with an old friend Dan Call from national recording artists The Villains. We talk about our early days of rock and roll in Atlanta in the late 80's, when we first met, and some of the many great musicians that came out of Atlanta while we were playing out. We get into Dan's thirty-plus years in the music business as a musician, songwriter, and singer. Dan's hit the charts with his band The Villains, and written and recorded with a variety of amazing artists including a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. We talk KISS, Van Halen, and what Dan has going on these days, including his first solo EP and the new single getting multiple streams on Spotify called "Wish I Was Gay." Monte Pittman – Living Between The Spaces – BONUS

E

Monte Pittman for “Better or Worse,” is living “Between The Spaces,” of music by releasing two albums at the same time. The longtime Madonna guitarist and former Prong guitar player has ties to the Pop world, but remains very much rooted in Hard Rock and Metal. Steve Michael caught up with Monte when he rolled through town opening up for former Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach. Monte was on the tour trail promoting his two, that’s right I said two, album releases which hit the market on the same day in August. With the help of Brian Slagel and Metal Blade records, this ridiculously talented musician released a full blown electric album “Between The Spaces” and a completely acoustic record “Better Or Worse.” We shoot the shit about growing up in towns where music was not plentiful, and how he first met up with pop icon Madonna. We get into the recording of his latest albums, as well as how he feels about the flow of an album and live show. I caught Monte’s set which was a high energy wall of bombastic sound that almost seems impossible for three people to produce. Making an extremely conscious effort to ensure his live set flowed, he ran through tunes from not only his latest two releases but also some songs from his first two releases, “Inverted Grasp Of Balance” and “Power Of Three.” Monte’s music often is like a buzz saw cutting down trees with its ferocity, but it still maintains melody and song structure that is easy to follow and, most importantly for me, lyrics that I can understand. In other words, no “Cookie Monster” vocals here. Queen Top 5 With Bohemian Rhapsody Movie Review – EP072

E

In this Growin' Up Rock episode, we give our review of the new Queen movie “Bohemian Rhapsody.” We enlist the help of fellow podcaster, Queen fan, and host of the Damn Good Movie Memories podcast, Brian Davis to come along for the ride as we doubledown to make it a Top 5 Queen songs episode too. When you talk about influential classic rock bands of the 70's and 80's, you would be hard pressed not to mention one of the greatest of all time, Queen. A completely ground-breaking rock band, they had songwriting talent all around, plus an iconic singer in Freddie Mercury and an amazing guitar player in Brian May. Queen broke all boundaries of what a rock band should look and sound like. Influencing bands like Guns and Roses, Metallica, Extreme and many others along the way. There are so many different textures and moods to Queen’s music, it’s almost doing a disservice to them to lump the songs under one umbrella of Rock n Roll, but at the heart of their music beats a well-oiled Rock n Roll machine. Kick back, enjoy our movie review and listen as we talk about some of our favorite Queen tunes and pick a few deeper tracks to play that you may or may not be that familiar with. Crank It Up – Have You Ever Heard? – EP071

Tonight we crank it up and ask the question, have you ever heard of these guys? We crank up the volume to music from Lynam, Million Dollar Reload, Gary Schutt, Firewind, and Zan Clan. The Crank It Up Spotlight, is a regular segment we cover in almost every episode, but tonight we are dedicating the entire episode, because we want to share some hard rock and metal bands you most likely are not that familiar with, and if you are, you rock, that’s awesome!! In an added bonus, I attended an LA Guns concert, and sat down with the opening act Lynam, who happens to be one of the bands we think enough people just aren't aware of, so you will get the interview I recorded outside the venue at the end of the night with the guys in Lynam. Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame – Who’s In Who’s Out? – EP070

E

The Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame invokes a lot of discussion among the hard rock and metal community. Should we have our own Hard Rock and Metal Hall Of Fame, and if so, who's in and who's out? Since its existence, the Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame has come with it’s share of controversy, whether people are arguing about who’s in and who’s out, or bands arguing about who is coming and who is performing together. We believe in rock n roll and music in general, but we have thoughts about the current state of affairs at the RnR HOF and some ideas that will spawn a much better representation for the hard rock and metal community. Who gets to decide what falls under the umbrella of Rock n Roll? We ask this question because to us, the definition of RnR, Rap, R&B, Blues, Pop, and Punk is certainly blurred at best. In our opinion it appears rock n roll has become more of an all encompassing description of music, instead of a particular genre of music as it once was. Jump in on this conversation and share your thoughts and views with us over at our Facebook page, we would love to hear from you, who’s in and who’s out on your Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame Ballot. Top 5 Kix With Steve Whiteman – EP069

E

We love Kix, so we pick our Top 5 Kix tunes to share. We also love Kix Lead Singer Steve Whiteman and when we had the opportunity to catch up with Steve to discuss the 30th anniversary of the Kix classic album Blow My Fuse we jumped on it. Thin Line Between Love & Hate – EP068

E

It’s a thin line between love and hate, and nowhere is it more apparent than in rock n roll, so we got to stop the hate and start the love. This week we get back to basics and have fun with a themed episode that is loaded with some great music by Firehouse, Halford, Tyketto, Megadeth, House Of Lords, WASP, Saraya, and of course Kiss. The theme this week is all about song titles with Love or Hate in the title and in some cases both Love and Hate. We get into the Ticketmaster and Live Nation controversy, and take time to discuss the BulletBoys and Enuff Z Nuff concert I attended this week. Craig Goldy Is A Dream Child – EP067

E

Craig Goldy has a very interesting rock n roll story to tell. The former Dio guitar player took time out from his new band Dream Child to discuss his friendship with Ronnie James Dio, his earlier work with Guiffria, and Rough Cutt, and the emotions he feels while paying tribute to Ronnie James Dio performing with the Dio Disciples. From his earliest memories of growing up in a not so ideal home environment, to living out of his car on the streets, Craig shares stories about his auditions for Rough Cutt, touring with Guiffria and meeting his guitar hero Ritchie Blackmore. Craig Goldy’s new band Dream Child which features guitarists / keyboardist Wayne Findlay (MSG), bassist Rudy Sarzo (Ozzy, Whitesnake, Dio) and drummer Simon Wright (AC/DC, Dio), plus singer Diego Valdez just released their debut on Frontiers Records “Until Death Do We Meet Again” is an outstanding mixture of classic Rainbow, Deep Purple, and Dio Influenced rock n roll for your ears. We highly recommend you pick up a copy right here Craig Goldy was great to speak with and very forthcoming about his time with Guiffria and Dio and in our opinion was way more accommodating than most musician, and we appreciated his time. It truly was like hanging out and catching up with a long lost friend. We wish Craig all the luck in the world for his future projects. Cinderella Top 5 – EP066

E

This week Sonny and I scream “SHAKE ME” at the top of our lungs all night as we both pick our Top 5 Cinderella songs. We barely avoid an all-out brawl on mic when we both claim a song as our favorite, deciding in the end to let technology pick the true winner of the favorite song sweepstakes. I remember seeing Cinderella in the 90's, long after their “heyday.” With rock considered passe at the time, I was psyched to be able to see a band I dug in a small club at an affordable price. Cinderella blew the roof off the place that night, and I remember thinking, "Here is a rock band that, in an arena or small club, delivers kick-ass music to the roar of a crowd" and I have never forgotten that fact. Sonny and I both decided we have somewhat of a love/hate relationship with this band, but both of us agree it's more love than hate. There are certainly more than enough killer songs to go around and make it a very tough task to decide which are our Top 5 Cinderella songs at the moment we happened to record this episode of the Growin’ Up Rock Podcast. Make sure you go to our Facebook page, Podchaser, or our website and share your thoughts on the band, your top 5 favorites and what you think of this episode. Eclipse – Rock’s Complete Package – EP065

E

Eclipse is Rock's complete package. Growin' Up Rock was lucky enough to catch up with the Swedish band in Atlanta to learn what's brought them here and what's in store for the future. Eclipse has released three albums that I absolutely love on Frontiers Records: Bleed and Scream (2012), Armageddonize (2015), and Monumentum (2017). On a rare trip to the US for an appearance at PowerProg USA, a progressive power metal festival, singer Erik Mårtensson, guitarist Magnus Henriksson, and drummer Philip Crusner of Sweden's Eclipse were kind enough to share some of their earliest influences, how they approach writing for different projects they are involved with, and their philosophy on recording to create these sonically awesome Eclipse records. It has occurred to us that Sweden must be putting something in the water, because there are a ton of killer hard rock and metal bands coming out of there these days. As you will hear from our conversation, it may just be the fact that all those kids whose parents were deep into hard rock and metal are finally coming of age. With incredible melodies, screaming guitars, great vocals and huge choruses tailor made for an arena or stadium, you're in for a treat because Eclipse is the total rock n roll package. Rock N Pod 2 Recap Finale – EP064

E

Nashville Rock N Pod 2 is over , and we are closing out this year's Rock N Pod 2 recap with an epic finale of massive proportions. In this finale you will hear from Tora Tora, Keel, Tesla, Kik Tracee, Bang Tang, and a host of other great interviews. Growin' Up Rock loves to have fun and we do exactly that with our guest as we dig into what music they grew up on that meant so much to them driving them to become the people they are today. Growin' Up Rock had an amazing amount of fun this year hanging out with fellow podcasters, rock stars, comedians, and everyday music fans just like us. Sonny & Steven cannot stress the importance we think music podcast play in the education of music fans new and old, because we just don't get what radio and TV are doing anymore when it comes to true rock n roll. Hollywood and Steven will share their overall experience of the entire weekend. Its a great mix of music and the stories and memories that were created over the course of the weekend. If you were lucky enough to be there too, you can relive it from our perspective, and if you couldn’t attend, you can hear how awesome it was and start making plans to be there with us next year. GUR believes in the concept of Rock N Pod and the overall idea that brings together knowledgeable music-loving podcasters, the artists we love and follow, and the listeners who support rock n roll. Who’s The New Guy – EP061

E

Who's the new guy in the band? In this episode, we take a look at replacement players who have impacted the bands they joined in an awesome way. Hey, I went to my job today and some new guy was there doing it. Who's the new guy? WTF? Have I been fired? Oh wait, I left because quite frankly I can't stand the rest of the guys in this band. With the music industry changing rapidly each and every day, free agency is at an all-time high. One way musicians make a living nowadays is to play in 50 bands at the same time and stay out there on the road. Musicians switch bands like a pack of 8 year-olds playing musical chairs at the popular kid's birthday party. So in today’s episode, Sonny and I talk about just a few of our favorite replacement players who have contributed some good work with bands we love. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind we are going to make some controversial statements in this episode, but it's only our preferences and opinions and we encourage you to voice yours. Go to our Facebook page and start the conversation, and I am sure we will chime in. ***RECORDING NOTE*** This is a lost episode and was recorded in the summer of 2017. Enjoy the GUR vaults!! Under Covers Of The Night – EP060

E

Under Covers of the Night is an episode about playing and discussing some very cool rock cover songs that Sonny and I discovered. When Sonny and I started to discuss doing a covers episode recently, our research quickly turned up a massive number of cover songs out there in the universe. Some awesome, and some complete crap. Some extremely close to the original, and some completely unrecognizable. You have cover songs that are part of tribute albums to a designated band or artist. You have cover songs that were created for a sound track to a movie or TV show. At the end of the day, we decided that we were going to have to do more episodes in the future about cover songs. But for now, we had a load of fun digging for cover gems and even though we don’t always agree on what is good and what is bad, we do agree we love to Rock n Roll. This Ain’t No Disco ’90 – EP059

E

It's time for another installment of “This Ain’t No Disco” on Growin’ Up Rock. In an episode from the Growin' Up Rock Vaults. (yes we recorded this one last year - see if you can tell) This ain't no disco, but it sure as hell is rock n roll at its finest. On this episode we jump in our “Back To The Future” time traveling Delorean and go back to 1990, and what another kick ass year it was for hard rock and metal releases. It was getting close to the end for the hard rock / glam rock pretty boy music scene, that we came to know and love and getting close to the dawning of what would come to be known as the Grunge Rock era. We love the opportunity to focus on a year, and play whatever we feel like playing at the time we jump on our mics.We share a few laughs, talk about the changing tides in music and pick out a handful of great music to turn it up and take you back to 1990. Fabulous First – Happy Anniversary – EP058

E

We're celebrating our Fabulous First. Happy Anniversary Growin' Up Rock Listeners!! Remember the first time you heard one of your all-time favorite bands? How about the first time you saw them in concert? Growin' Up Rock is turning one, so we have an epic first year celebration in store for you all. Sonny and I reflect back on our first year of episodes, while discussing our fabulous first associated with some of our favorite bands we grew up loving in high school. Sonny and I have a ton of bands that meant so much to us growing up around rock n roll, while going to high school. There were far more bands than there was enough time in this episode to discuss all of them, but we touch on 5 of them that were certainly right there in the mix. I wasted more time sitting in class and drawing these bands logos on all my folders instead of actually studying and I don't regret a single minute. Maybe the first time you heard your favorite bands, was not actually the first album from that artist, but more the middle of the catalog based on your age. If that's the case for you, what was that bands sound like on that first release? Have they changed? Did they grow into more of a band you love, or change so much they became something less listenable for you? In a less likely case, you may actually love everything that artist ever released. Sonny and I talk about this and so much more and we are proud as hell to take all the Growin' Up Rock listeners with us for this fabulous first Anniversary, Birthday, whatever the hell you want to call it episode. Dokken Top 5 At This Minute – EP057

E

It’s been a long time coming but we are finally doing a Dokken Top 5 List. On this episode we spin the Dial O’ Destiny and pick our top 5 favorite Dokken tunes. At least at this minute. Sonny and I are such huge Dokken fans, we found it impossible to pick just 5 of our favorite Dokken songs, so for the sake of time, as in we don’t have enough, we decided to capture a moment in time and record our favorites at this minute. Rockin' with Dokken is definitely a Growing Up Rock pasttime for Hollywood and me, and picking our favorite songs is like asking “Do you want cheese and bacon on that burger”? - Answer - UMMMMM - YES and YES!!! We also talk about our recent adventures in concert going, and how we think the economics of our universe will vastly improve the human and alien relationships of the future. OK - so I made that last part up, just wanted to see if you actually read this shit. Dokken is an American metal band formed in 1979. It split up in 1989 and reformed four years later. The band had three charting singles ("Alone Again", "In My Dreams" and "Burning Like a Flame") and have sold more than 10 million albums worldwide. Growin' Up Rock caught up with co-founder Cole Raven to get the inside scoop on how Podchaser developed, what they have to offer, and what they're trying to achieve as a company. We also get to know him and find out more about Cole and the massive amount of podcasts he listens to as he’s running obstacle courses or training for the next season of Survivor (OK We completely made that part up about Survivor, but I think he might be good on it.). We vow to help Cole with his playlist by adding a healthy dose of Rock n Roll to improve his time out on the running course. Hear from Cole what he thinks makes a great podcast. In this episode we get down and dirty with a closer look at the infamous Filthy 15 list of rock and pop songs, put out by the PMRC in 1985. What happens in 1985 when politicians' wives, with way too much time on their hands, catch their children walking around the house singing songs they find objectionable? Find out in this episode of Growin’ Up Rock, as Sonny and Steven explore the PMRC and the so-called list of Filthy 15 songs that were put on this earth to destroy the youth of America. We discuss, in our opinions, what they got right and what they got so horribly wrong. We rock some of the songs on the list so you can judge for yourself, and we play one that missed the list. In 1985, there were a million tunes that could have made the list, so why these 15? Music is an art form which we feel should be left open to interpretation, not censored by people who think they know what I should and should not be listening to. That being said, with what is out in the world today, I do think parents should be doing their job, and listen to what little Timmy and Suzie are listening to, so they can decide on a case-by-case basis whether or not they are mature enough to handle the content and not do damage to an impressionable developing mind that was not ready to hear it yet in the first place. On The Road At Summer NAMM – Bonus

E

Typically on Growin' Up Rock, we are all about the music and the artists who create it, but in this episode we take our show on the road and head to Nashville for Summer NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) industry event to learn more about what's happening in the business of music. At the show, we have quick chats with producer/engineer Nick Raskulinecz (Rush, Halestorm, Foo Fighters) and Living Colour bassist Doug Wimbish. Then marketing manager Matt Brown at EVH guitars gives us the story behind Eddie Van Halen's Eruption '78 series guitar packages. We run into Decibel Geek Alumni, Toddzilla and attend concerts with Poison, Cheap Trick, Pop Evil, and Thee Rock n Roll Residency while hanging out with our friends at The Decibel Geek. The NAMM show (National Association of Music Merchants) happens twice a year and isn't open to the public. The expo area showcases the latest tools and instruments on the market so that merchants can place their orders to get the stuff in their stores for musicians to purchase. So while the event is restricted to music industry insiders, the bonus of this is that often there are artist walking around taking a look at the latest products or demoing equipment. Inside Bob Nalbandian’s Metal Heart – EP054

E

In this episode, we talk with Bob Nalbandian, director of the docuseries “Inside Metal: The Pioneers Of Hard Rock And Metal.” Bob shares his growing up rock stories and some amazing stories about making these documentaries and growing up in LA during this glorious time for hard rock and metal music. In the not-too-distant future, the awesome bands of the 70’s and 80’s that we grew up loving and seeing live in concert be just a memory. Time stops for no man. That’s why it’s increasingly important for documentaries to be made by people like Bob Nalbandian who grew up in LA and is an ardent fan of hard rock and metal. Bob was into the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) and some of the awesome local acts happening out in LA during the musical explosion of the 80’s and early 90’s. Bob Nalbandian loves the music and connected first hand with the musicians, many of whom grew up in Los Angeles at a time when bands and fans filled local clubs like the Whiskey, The Troubadour, The Starwood, and The Country Club. You've heard of Motley Crue, Van Halen, Ratt, and Quiet Riot, but for every one of those bands there were five others that were every bit as popular in the clubs at the time that you never heard of unless you lived on the Sunset Strip when the LA metal scene exploded. We had an awesome time just hanging out and talking with Bob about some of the stories, characters, and memories he had seeing these killer rock n roll bands coming of age in the early stages of their careers out in Hollywood. Jacob Cade – Young Rock Rising – EP053

E

Jacob Cade represents the young rock rising in music today. The young 19 year old up and coming singer / guitar player from Denver sits down with Growin’ Up Rock to share his experiences working with famed hard rock producer Michael Wagner, and co-writing songs from his upcoming EP release “Hunger” with Lzzy Hale and Joe Hottinger from Halestorm, Rachel Bolan from Skid Row, and Paul Taylor from Winger. We discuss the state of the music business today through the eyes of a young artist. We play some choice cuts from Jacob’s album as well as some of his favorite tunes to crank up. They say that Rock is Dead, and after my visit to Denver and sitting down with Jacob Cade, I think Rock lives strongly in the heart of the young. All you have to do is press play on either Jacob’s 1st album “The Prince Of Rock n Roll” which he wrote when he was 16, or one of the new tunes off his upcoming EP “Hunger” to hear that he not only loves Rock and classic rock like Zeppelin, GNR, Slash, and Aerosmith, but he writes music that has its sights set on bringing back rock to the mainstream. Raw in your face loud guitar riffs with thundering bass and drums layered with aggressive youthful vocals with almost a punk attitude, rips through your car stereo speakers while heading down the highway to a big arena rock show. Ahhh, don’t that just bring back the memories? It's completely exciting for us to see rock is still alive and well in the youth of America. Jacob Cade, is in the early stages of his ‘Growin’ Up Rock Story”, but he was kind enough to open his door and share with us all the amazing stories he has already built up and given us his insight and views on where he may go from here. Jacob will also be appearing at this years Rock n Pod 2 Expo in Nashville, so hopefully you will make the trip. It’s an entertaining discussion with some righteous loud rock n roll mixed in. We talk to Christian Swain, host of the Rock N Roll Archaeology Project Podcast about his Growin’ Up Rock story and his goal with this massive project he has taken on. Why he feels there is an obligation to educate today’s youth about rock music. I like to refer to Christian as the Indiana Jones of Rock n Roll Podcasting. He spends a great deal of time putting together his shows and now he has a whole network of shows that tie into the Mother ship Podcast that is the Rock n Roll Archaeology Project or since we are among friends RNRAP. It’s All In The Numbers – EP051

E

It's all in the numbers, or at least that's what a numbers guy like Hollywood would have us all believe. It's really simple, there is a ton of great rock bands and great rock songs that revolve around numbers. Lets face it, music itself is all about beats and time signatures, aka Numbers!! In this episode Sonny takes the even numbers and Steven embraces the fact that he is the odd man out, and begrudgingly takes the odd numbers. We discuss some of Steven's latest concert adventures and play some bands and songs that have everything to do with the numbers, duh, the title of the episode is "It's All In The Numbers". We have picked out some great music as always so TURN IT UP!! New In The Listening Room - Crazy Lixx Help us fund the Rock N Pod Expo 2 this year in Nashville. Graduation Day – EP050

E

It's Graduation Day at Growin' Up Rock, and our friend Bakko from the Cobras and Fire Podcast is here to help us figure out where our lives went horribly wrong. Do you remember your Senior Year? Your Graduation Day? What was your life like at that time? What rock bands and concerts impacted you during this pivotal time in your life? Sonny goes missing, and we are sure he is completely trying to avoid Bakko like the plague. Tune in to find out the truth of Hollywood's disappearance. Growin' Up Rock is halfway to 100 episodes and in this, our 50th episode, we decide to reflect on our senior year in high school. Steven and special guest Bakko, dig out their personal yearbooks and read some of the many ridiculous notes written in the back written by friends they may or may not remember and pick some great songs from albums released during their graduation years. Stand up, raise your fist in the air and reminisce about your high school years while we mix in some great rock n roll for you to listen to. Help us fund the Rock N Pod Expo 2 this year in Nashville. Stryper’s Michael Sweet – EP049

E

Stryper has been a Growin' Up Rock part of my life since they released the Yellow and Black Attack back in 1984. Singer and lead guitarist Michael Sweet is an amazing singer and we feel criminally underrated as a guitar player, so it is an honor to have him sit in with us on today's podcast. We talk to Michael about some of his earliest memories and influences, and we get into Stryper's latest release "God Damn Evil." Check out GUR co-host Sonny Pooni's album review right here. Michael is the driving force behind Stryper and he appears to be one of the hardest working men in rock n roll, with solo projects, Stryper albums, touring, Sweet and Lynch records, etc. When does this dude find the time to do stuff, like you know SLEEP!?! To me, it seems like the music the band has been releasing on the last two albums is as good, if not better, than anything they released in their so called "Hey Day." I say their "Hey Day" is today!! So grab your bible (just kidding, no preaching here, this is a rock show) and turn it up while you check out the latest episode of the Growin' Up Rock podcast. Life, Love & Rock N Roll – EP046

E

What's it all about? It's about Life, Love, & Rock n Roll. At least that's what Sonny and I think. On this episode we find out how a band called Granny 4 Barrel made so much noise and a lasting impression after I showed up late and completely missed their live set. We discuss the upcoming summer concert series. I tell you all about playing hooky on a school night in order to rock n roll my way through the mean streets of Atlanta, while Sonny travels from city to city, selling his companies cult like wears. We decide that part of hanging out and shooting the shit about concerts and our wives, is also playing a little Def Leppard, Kix, Nordic Union, Billy Idol, Hell's Addiction, and The Darkness. Joel Hoekstra Interview – EP045

E

Whitesnake's guitarist, Joel Hoekstra is the perfect portrait of what today’s guitar god looks like. The man comes across as humble with true personal values, but on stage just enough attitude and swagger that draws you in, and has you standing on your chair with your fist raised high above your head. Oh, and we can’t forget the most important trait in a guitar hero. You must be able to wield your guitar like a sword in an all out musical war, which Joel does without a doubt. In this episode we talk with Whitesnake guitarist, Joel Hoekstra. Joel is a guitar hero in demand and has built a solid resume that is second to none. Joel is currently part of one of the best twin guitar attacks in rock n roll playing alongside Reb Beach in Whitesnake. In addition to Whitesnake, Joel spends the rest of his year sharing the stage with Cher, and Trans Siberian Orchestra. Joel Hoekstra has not only recorded several solo albums, including Joel Hoekstra’s 13, an album Joel released in 2015 which is more a collection of actual songs, rather than a collection of instrumentals which you might expect in a guitar players solo effort. Joel spent several years as a partner in crime with Brad Gillis to the dual guitar efforts of Night Ranger and playing in the Broadway production of Rock Of Ages. We talk with Joel about his earliest memories around his musical upbringing and discuss his gateways into Rock n Roll. We get into all the musical relationships he has built with so many of today's superstars and how his work ethic and positive attitude has made him in demand and given him many opportunities that most musicians in his line of work would kill to have. Joel picks a handful of songs from Whitesnake and Joel Hoekstra 13 to share with the listeners and we talk about the upcoming Whitesnake tour with Foreigner as well as a new album coming from Whitesnake. Prince, We Like It Heavy – EP042

E

We Love Prince and we like it heavy, so we want to celebrate the rock n roll side of his music on this 2nd anniversary of his passing. Legends never die. “I never meant to cause use any sorrow, I never meant to cause you any pain…” Whether Prince was preaching to the crowd, telling a personal story or encouraging everyone to get funky, the messages were loud and clear. Although he is no longer physically present, he lives with us through his incredible music. On We like it heavy: Prince we discuss the iconic artist, Prince. Although we all love “the hits”, we go a little deeper and cover the more guitar driven rock tracks. There are not many mainstream artists that appeal to the hardcore rock/heavy metal fans. It’s just not cool in our narrowly focused world. But, Prince seemed to connect to everyone. So, whether you love pop, R&B, rock, or funk, there is Prince music for everyone at Growin’ Up Rock. Turn it up! Help us fund the Rock N Pod Expo 2 this year in Nashville. August 25th - Hopefully you can come but if not, please consider being a VIP and making a donation to make this happen. Loverboy w/ Paul Dean – EP041

E

Loverboy lead guitarist Paul Dean is a rare breed in a rock band. He’s loyal to almost a fault, and in a world dominated by Guitar Gods, his ego is checked at the door while focusing on writing music not to suit his own stature, but rather put his lead singer Mike Reno in the best possible situation to use what Paul says is “one of the best rock voices in history” Formed in Calgary in 1979, Loverboy ruled the rock airwaves and MTV from 80 -85 with an amazing string of hits and platinum albums. Tunes like “Turn Me Loose”, “Hot Girls In Love”, “Lovin’ Every Minute Of It”, “Working For The Weekend”, and more. After a successful debut album with Canadian rockers Streetheart, Paul Dean was sent packing back to Calgary where he got back up on the horse, coming together with rock solid vocalist Mike Reno to form Loverboy. Paul Dean was instrumental in the success of Loverboy, co-writing on almost all the songs for the first 4 records, which by the way were the ones that made Loverboy a household name in the 80s. In this episode, Growin’ Up Rock’s Steven Michael talks on the phone with Loverboy’s guitarist Paul Dean to discuss his early years, growing up in a remote Canadian resort area, playing around the campfires, and seeing Jimi Hendrix and Vanilla Fudge play live. We get into his early bands, Loverboy, and what he feels his role in the band has always been. We discuss why he thinks Loverboy’s members have stayed in tact for so many years continuing to play out live each and every year. We talk about the release of his new single and solo album, and just have a genuinely great conversation with one of Steven’s many influential Growin’ Up Rock bands Like always - Get out there and support live and recorded rock n roll music. Texas Hippie Coalition w/ Big Dad Ritch – EP040

E

Texas Hippie Coalition. Formed in Denison, Texas by vocalist Big Dad Ritch and former bass player John Exall, the band plays a brand of music they they call "Red Dirt Metal". Imagine if you will, that bands could get together and have a Rock n Roll Love Child. Figuratively speaking if ZZ Top, and Pantera were to get together they would have for sure bred something sounding a lot like Texas Hippie Coalition. Texas Hippie Coalition has been on a consistent run of putting out an album every two years since 2008. Pride Of Texas (08), Rollin (10), Peacemaker (12), Ride On (14), Dark Side Of Black (16) have all been very consistent in sound, flying the flag high for Texas and that "Red Dirt Metal" sound. The song "Hands Up" showed up on a Spotify recommendation list for me, and since Spotify had done such a great job in the past with its recommendations for me, I was game to hit play and I'm glad I did. In that song, I heard a larger than life arena rock anthem with southern attitude and heavy guitar aggression, I had not heard since my last spin of a Pantera album. They are not near as "Thrashy" as Pantera, but I think that southern flair mixed with the heavy guitars is what makes me think Pantera a little. Guitarist Cord Pool, Nevada Romo, and Drummer Tim Braun, along with vocalist and founding "MC" Big Dad Ritch, flood the speakers and stages of the world with a "get up and break some shit" attitude. This is what initially attracted me to the band, and why I set out to find out more about this band of outlaws, I knew very little about other than the name which I had heard in circles previously. I reached out to have that conversation with Big Dad Ritch and find out more about this "new to me" band, I had embraced and wanted to share with the Growin' Up Rock audience. What I found in this interview was a dude who is absolutely dedicated to his music and his fans, which in this day and age is refreshing. All bands say they love their fans, but as you will find out THC practices what they preach in making it feel like one big sweaty rock n roll family. BDR and I talk about the upcoming tour, keeping on track with putting out a new album in 2018 and some fun memories and stories about growing up in Texas, his dedicated fans, and a brush with greatness that included the late great Stevie Ray Vaughn and Dimebag Daryl.
