In this episode we are livin' the life with Miljenko Matijevic of Steelheart. We catch up with Steelheart's main man Miljenko to talk about his career, the new live album, and what Steelheart fans can expect in 2019. In 1990 when Steelheart finally got their shot to hit the rock scene, the band embodied everything you would want from a band in that era. They had the look, catchy songs, emotional ballads, screeching guitars, energetic live shows, and a singer named Miljenko Matijevic with a multi-octave range that would make your head spin. Through the journey, Steelheart ended up with a varied history. The band had a couple of hit songs of off 2 amazing albums and then quickly fell off the face of the earth after a fluke stage accident. Miljenko rebuilt the band for a stint in 1996, was involved in the movie Rock Star (playing the voice of Marky Mark Wahlberg) in 2001 and then returned to the rock scene for good in 2006. In 2010, Miljenko even did a stint being the lead singer for The Doors. After releasing the acclaimed Through Worlds of Stardust in 2017, Steelheart is back with a live CD/DVD called Rock ‘n Milan. Miljenko Matijevic tells his Growin’ Up Rock story by sharing his humble beginnings, move to America, his start in music, influences, how Steelheart became a MTV smash, handling adversity of the music business, coming back into the scene through movies/TV, success that being a hit in Asia brought and what the future has yet to offer. Miljenko was very transparent and passionate throughout the conversation. In this episode it's all about the countless number of rock bands under the influence of the mighty Van Halen. In The 80s there was no rock band bigger than the mighty Van Halen. The guitar playing of Eddie Van Halen and the ringmaster antics of David Lee Roth had a lasting effect on every rock band coming up in the 80s and beyond. Marc Ferrari is a RnR business animal. Known for being the lead guitar player in Keel and Cold Sweat, Marc has played to thousands of Rock n Roll animals around the world. Marc has done the whole Rockstar thing, but that is just a small stop in his musical journey through life. Some of Marc's career highlights include, writing songs for the 96 Summer Olympic Games, writing and releasing 2 solo records, playing guitar for Crucial Taunt, a fictional band in a couple of the most iconic movies from the 90s Wayne's World. Oh and did we forget to mention that Marc is also a writer. Marc has written two books, a music business book called "Rock Star 101" and a children's book called "Don't Dilly Dally Silly Sally". All of these accomplishments, and they still are probably not his most financially or intellectually biggest success. When Marc's musical career was starting to decline in the early 90s when the fans of hard rock and metal started to turn to grunge, Marc started Mastersource, a music publishing company to license music to TV and movies. He grew that company at the right time and later sold it to Universal Music Publishing. He's an entrepreneur, investor, musician, writer, producer, and in all of that he still found the time to work on a re-release of the cult hard rock record "Break Out", from his band Cold Sweat. Monsters Of Rock Cruise Preview, part 1 of 4 Steven and Hollywood are going cruising. The Growin' Up Rock Podcast in 2019 will take it's show on the road and jump on the Monsters Of Rock Cruise. Matt Jaffe is a singer-songwriter from San Francisco. Relatively unknown in the rest of the United States, this California rocker cut his teeth on open mics around the Bay Area. Matt started pursuing music more seriously when Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads) offered to produce his first record. From his earliest memories of growing up playing classic violin at 5 years old, to playing ANY gig that he was offered regardless of venue size, Matt shares stories about his young career. And he describes what it took to release his third album of original material, The Spirit Catches You. Matt Jaffe was great to speak with and very forthcoming about the music business and how his career is progressing. Matt is an intelligent young man who we believe will have a long, fruitful career. Monte Pittman for “Better or Worse,” is living “Between The Spaces,” of music by releasing two albums at the same time. The longtime Madonna guitarist and former Prong guitar player has ties to the Pop world, but remains very much rooted in Hard Rock and Metal. Steve Michael caught up with Monte when he rolled through town opening up for former Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach. Monte was on the tour trail promoting his two, that’s right I said two, album releases which hit the market on the same day in August. With the help of Brian Slagel and Metal Blade records, this ridiculously talented musician released a full blown electric album “Between The Spaces” and a completely acoustic record “Better Or Worse.” We shoot the shit about growing up in towns where music was not plentiful, and how he first met up with pop icon Madonna. We get into the recording of his latest albums, as well as how he feels about the flow of an album and live show. I caught Monte’s set which was a high energy wall of bombastic sound that almost seems impossible for three people to produce. Making an extremely conscious effort to ensure his live set flowed, he ran through tunes from not only his latest two releases but also some songs from his first two releases, “Inverted Grasp Of Balance” and “Power Of Three.” Monte’s music often is like a buzz saw cutting down trees with its ferocity, but it still maintains melody and song structure that is easy to follow and, most importantly for me, lyrics that I can understand. In other words, no “Cookie Monster” vocals here. The Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame invokes a lot of discussion among the hard rock and metal community. Should we have our own Hard Rock and Metal Hall Of Fame, and if so, who's in and who's out? Since its existence, the Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame has come with it’s share of controversy, whether people are arguing about who’s in and who’s out, or bands arguing about who is coming and who is performing together. We believe in rock n roll and music in general, but we have thoughts about the current state of affairs at the RnR HOF and some ideas that will spawn a much better representation for the hard rock and metal community. Who gets to decide what falls under the umbrella of Rock n Roll? We ask this question because to us, the definition of RnR, Rap, R&B, Blues, Pop, and Punk is certainly blurred at best. In our opinion it appears rock n roll has become more of an all encompassing description of music, instead of a particular genre of music as it once was. Craig Goldy has a very interesting rock n roll story to tell. The former Dio guitar player took time out from his new band Dream Child to discuss his friendship with Ronnie James Dio, his earlier work with Guiffria, and Rough Cutt, and the emotions he feels while paying tribute to Ronnie James Dio performing with the Dio Disciples. From his earliest memories of growing up in a not so ideal home environment, to living out of his car on the streets, Craig shares stories about his auditions for Rough Cutt, touring with Guiffria and meeting his guitar hero Ritchie Blackmore. Craig Goldy’s new band Dream Child which features guitarists / keyboardist Wayne Findlay (MSG), bassist Rudy Sarzo (Ozzy, Whitesnake, Dio) and drummer Simon Wright (AC/DC, Dio), plus singer Diego Valdez just released their debut on Frontiers Records “Until Death Do We Meet Again” is an outstanding mixture of classic Rainbow, Deep Purple, and Dio Influenced rock n roll for your ears. This week Sonny and I scream “SHAKE ME” at the top of our lungs all night as we both pick our Top 5 Cinderella songs. We barely avoid an all-out brawl on mic when we both claim a song as our favorite, deciding in the end to let technology pick the true winner of the favorite song sweepstakes. I remember seeing Cinderella in the 90's, long after their “heyday.” With rock considered passe at the time, I was psyched to be able to see a band I dug in a small club at an affordable price. Cinderella blew the roof off the place that night, and I remember thinking, "Here is a rock band that, in an arena or small club, delivers kick-ass music to the roar of a crowd" and I have never forgotten that fact. Sonny and I both decided we have somewhat of a love/hate relationship with this band, but both of us agree it's more love than hate. There are certainly more than enough killer songs to go around and make it a very tough task to decide which are our Top 5 Cinderella songs at the moment we happened to record this episode of the Growin’ Up Rock Podcast. Eclipse is Rock's complete package. Growin' Up Rock was lucky enough to catch up with the Swedish band in Atlanta to learn what's brought them here and what's in store for the future. Eclipse has released three albums that I absolutely love on Frontiers Records: Bleed and Scream (2012), Armageddonize (2015), and Monumentum (2017). On a rare trip to the US for an appearance at PowerProg USA, a progressive power metal festival, singer Erik Mårtensson, guitarist Magnus Henriksson, and drummer Philip Crusner of Sweden's Eclipse were kind enough to share some of their earliest influences, how they approach writing for different projects they are involved with, and their philosophy on recording to create these sonically awesome Eclipse records. It has occurred to us that Sweden must be putting something in the water, because there are a ton of killer hard rock and metal bands coming out of there these days. As you will hear from our conversation, it may just be the fact that all those kids whose parents were deep into hard rock and metal are finally coming of age. Who's the new guy in the band? In this episode, we take a look at replacement players who have impacted the bands they joined in an awesome way. Hey, I went to my job today and some new guy was there doing it. Who's the new guy? WTF? Have I been fired? Oh wait, I left because quite frankly I can't stand the rest of the guys in this band. With the music industry changing rapidly each and every day, free agency is at an all-time high. One way musicians make a living nowadays is to play in 50 bands at the same time and stay out there on the road. Musicians switch bands like a pack of 8 year-olds playing musical chairs at the popular kid's birthday party. So in today’s episode, Sonny and I talk about just a few of our favorite replacement players who have contributed some good work with bands we love. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind we are going to make some controversial statements in this episode, but it's only our preferences and opinions and we encourage you to voice yours. Under Covers of the Night is an episode about playing and discussing some very cool rock cover songs that Sonny and I discovered. When Sonny and I started to discuss doing a covers episode recently, our research quickly turned up a massive number of cover songs out there in the universe. Some awesome, and some complete crap. Some extremely close to the original, and some completely unrecognizable. You have cover songs that are part of tribute albums to a designated band or artist. You have cover songs that were created for a sound track to a movie or TV show. At the end of the day, we decided that we were going to have to do more episodes in the future about cover songs. We're celebrating our Fabulous First. Happy Anniversary Growin' Up Rock Listeners!! Remember the first time you heard one of your all-time favorite bands? How about the first time you saw them in concert? Growin' Up Rock is turning one, so we have an epic first year celebration in store for you all. Sonny and I reflect back on our first year of episodes, while discussing our fabulous first associated with some of our favorite bands we grew up loving in high school. Sonny and I have a ton of bands that meant so much to us growing up around rock n roll, while going to high school. There were far more bands than there was enough time in this episode to discuss all of them, but we touch on 5 of them that were certainly right there in the mix. I wasted more time sitting in class and drawing these bands logos on all my folders instead of actually studying and I don't regret a single minute. Maybe the first time you heard your favorite bands, was not actually the first album from that artist, but more the middle of the catalog based on your age. If that's the case for you, what was that bands sound like on that first release? Have they changed? Did they grow into more of a band you love, or change so much they became something less listenable for you? In a less likely case, you may actually love everything that artist ever released. It’s been a long time coming but we are finally doing a Dokken Top 5 List. On this episode we spin the Dial O’ Destiny and pick our top 5 favorite Dokken tunes. At least at this minute. In this episode we get down and dirty with a closer look at the infamous Filthy 15 list of rock and pop songs, put out by the PMRC in 1985. What happens in 1985 when politicians' wives, with way too much time on their hands, catch their children walking around the house singing songs they find objectionable? Find out in this episode of Growin’ Up Rock, as Sonny and Steven explore the PMRC and the so-called list of Filthy 15 songs that were put on this earth to destroy the youth of America. We discuss, in our opinions, what they got right and what they got so horribly wrong. We rock some of the songs on the list so you can judge for yourself, and we play one that missed the list. In 1985, there were a million tunes that could have made the list, so why these 15? Music is an art form which we feel should be left open to interpretation, not censored by people who think they know what I should and should not be listening to. In this episode, we talk with Bob Nalbandian, director of the docuseries “Inside Metal: The Pioneers Of Hard Rock And Metal.” Bob shares his growing up rock stories and some amazing stories about making these documentaries and growing up in LA during this glorious time for hard rock and metal music. In the not-too-distant future, the awesome bands of the 70’s and 80’s that we grew up loving and seeing live in concert be just a memory. Time stops for no man. That’s why it’s increasingly important for documentaries to be made by people like Bob Nalbandian who grew up in LA and is an ardent fan of hard rock and metal. Bob was into the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) and some of the awesome local acts happening out in LA during the musical explosion of the 80’s and early 90’s. Bob Nalbandian loves the music and connected first hand with the musicians, many of whom grew up in Los Angeles at a time when bands and fans filled local clubs like the Whiskey, The Troubadour, The Starwood, and The Country Club. You've heard of Motley Crue, Van Halen, Ratt, and Quiet Riot, but for every one of those bands there were five others that were every bit as popular in the clubs at the time that you never heard of unless you lived on the Sunset Strip when the LA metal scene exploded. We had an awesome time just hanging out and talking with Bob about some of the stories, characters, and memories he had seeing these killer rock n roll bands coming of age in the early stages of their careers out in Hollywood. Jacob Cade represents the young rock rising in music today. The young 19 year old up and coming singer / guitar player from Denver sits down with Growin’ Up Rock to share his experiences working with famed hard rock producer Michael Wagner, and co-writing songs from his upcoming EP release “Hunger” with Lzzy Hale and Joe Hottinger from Halestorm, Rachel Bolan from Skid Row, and Paul Taylor from Winger. We discuss the state of the music business today through the eyes of a young artist. We play some choice cuts from Jacob’s album as well as some of his favorite tunes to crank up. They say that Rock is Dead, and after my visit to Denver and sitting down with Jacob Cade, I think Rock lives strongly in the heart of the young. All you have to do is press play on either Jacob’s 1st album “The Prince Of Rock n Roll” which he wrote when he was 16, or one of the new tunes off his upcoming EP “Hunger” to hear that he not only loves Rock and classic rock like Zeppelin, GNR, Slash, and Aerosmith, but he writes music that has its sights set on bringing back rock to the mainstream. Raw in your face loud guitar riffs with thundering bass and drums layered with aggressive youthful vocals with almost a punk attitude, rips through your car stereo speakers while heading down the highway to a big arena rock show. Ahhh, don’t that just bring back the memories? It's completely exciting for us to see rock is still alive and well in the youth of America. Stryper has been a Growin' Up Rock part of my life since they released the Yellow and Black Attack back in 1984. Singer and lead guitarist Michael Sweet is an amazing singer and we feel criminally underrated as a guitar player, so it is an honor to have him sit in with us on today's podcast. The Indy Kiss Konfessionals Day Two. - We're halfway there people!! Find out what happens when you have the Expo to end all Expos dedicated to the greatest Rock n Roll band on earth KISS. The 20th anniversary Indy Kiss Expo was celebrated in rock star fashion this month with a special guest list that was 2nd to none in Kiss World. In fact it seemed like just about everyone except Gene and Paul were in attendance. You had appearances by: Ace Frehley, Michael James Jackson, Todd Kerns, Bill Starkey, Lydia Criss, Eric Singer, Karl Cochran, Robert Fleischman, Roman Fernandez, Bruce Kulick, Anton Fig, Mark Slaughter, Big John Harte, Bobby Rock, Bob Kulick, Brent Fitz, Tod Howarth, John Regan, Lita Ford, Pat Gasperini, Ryan Spencer Cook, Phil Shouse, Jeremy Asbrock, Carrie Stevens, Chuck Garric, Rob Affuso. That was enough to keep your day busy, and then on top of all that at night, you had performances by The Kulick Brothers, The Gene Simmons Band (minus Gene), Four By Fate, an All Star Jam featuring Eric Singer and Ace Frehley, People like Lita Ford and Chuck Garric sitting in on various songs all highlighted by a two song reunion by the original Frehley's Comet. Growin' Up Rock was on site and recording the full two days. The Indy Kiss Konfessionals Day One. - It's gonna be a long weekend people!! Find out what happens when you have the Expo to end all Expos dedicated to the greatest Rock n Roll band on earth - KISS. The 20th anniversary Indy Kiss Expo was celebrated in rock star fashion this month, with a special guest list that was 2nd to none in Kiss World. In fact it seemed like just about everyone except Gene and Paul were in attendance. You had appearances by: Ace Frehley, Michael James Jackson, Todd Kerns, Bill Starkey, Lydia Criss, Eric Singer, Karl Cochran, Robert Fleischman, Roman Fernandez, Bruce Kulick, Anton Fig, Mark Slaughter, Big John Harte, Bobby Rock, Bob Kulick, Brent Fitz, Tod Howarth, John Regan, Lita Ford, Pat Gasperini, Ryan Spencer Cook, Phil Shouse, Jeremy Asbrock, Carrie Stevens, Chuck Garric, Rob Affuso. That was enough to keep your day busy, and then on top of all that at night, you had performances by The Kulick Brothers, The Gene Simmons Band (minus Gene), Four By Fate, an All Star Jam featuring Eric Singer and Ace Frehley, People like Lita Ford and Chuck Garric sitting in on various songs all highlighted by a two song reunion by the original Frehley's Comet. Growin' Up Rock was on site and recording the full two days. If you were unable to attend or you were there but can't remember, have no fear, we did our best to talk with Kiss fans, and many of the artist in attendance who were performing so that we could share their rock n roll story. Whitesnake's guitarist, Joel Hoekstra is the perfect portrait of what today’s guitar god looks like. The man comes across as humble with true personal values, but on stage just enough attitude and swagger that draws you in, and has you standing on your chair with your fist raised high above your head. Oh, and we can’t forget the most important trait in a guitar hero. You must be able to wield your guitar like a sword in an all out musical war, which Joel does without a doubt. In this episode we talk with Whitesnake guitarist, Joel Hoekstra. Joel is a guitar hero in demand and has built a solid resume that is second to none. Joel is currently part of one of the best twin guitar attacks in rock n roll playing alongside Reb Beach in Whitesnake. In addition to Whitesnake, Joel spends the rest of his year sharing the stage with Cher, and Trans Siberian Orchestra. Joel Hoekstra has not only recorded several solo albums, including Joel Hoekstra’s 13, an album Joel released in 2015 which is more a collection of actual songs, rather than a collection of instrumentals which you might expect in a guitar players solo effort. Joel spent several years as a partner in crime with Brad Gillis to the dual guitar efforts of Night Ranger and playing in the Broadway production of Rock Of Ages. We talk with Joel about his earliest memories around his musical upbringing and discuss his gateways into Rock n Roll. We get into all the musical relationships he has built with so many of today's superstars and how his work ethic and positive attitude has made him in demand and given him many opportunities that most musicians in his line of work would kill to have. Joel picks a handful of songs from Whitesnake and Joel Hoekstra 13 to share with the listeners and we talk about the upcoming Whitesnake tour with Foreigner as well as a new album coming from Whitesnake. Loverboy lead guitarist Paul Dean is a rare breed in a rock band. He’s loyal to almost a fault, and in a world dominated by Guitar Gods, his ego is checked at the door while focusing on writing music not to suit his own stature, but rather put his lead singer Mike Reno in the best possible situation to use what Paul says is “one of the best rock voices in history” Formed in Calgary in 1979, Loverboy ruled the rock airwaves and MTV from 80 -85 with an amazing string of hits and platinum albums. Tunes like “Turn Me Loose”, “Hot Girls In Love”, “Lovin’ Every Minute Of It”, “Working For The Weekend”, and more. After a successful debut album with Canadian rockers Streetheart, Paul Dean was sent packing back to Calgary where he got back up on the horse, coming together with rock solid vocalist Mike Reno to form Loverboy. Paul Dean was instrumental in the success of Loverboy, co-writing on almost all the songs for the first 4 records, which by the way were the ones that made Loverboy a household name in the 80s. In this episode, Growin’ Up Rock’s Steven Michael talks on the phone with Loverboy’s guitarist Paul Dean to discuss his early years, growing up in a remote Canadian resort area, playing around the campfires, and seeing Jimi Hendrix and Vanilla Fudge play live. We get into his early bands, Loverboy, and what he feels his role in the band has always been. Texas Hippie Coalition. Formed in Denison, Texas by vocalist Big Dad Ritch and former bass player John Exall, the band plays a brand of music they they call "Red Dirt Metal". Imagine if you will, that bands could get together and have a Rock n Roll Love Child. Figuratively speaking if ZZ Top, and Pantera were to get together they would have for sure bred something sounding a lot like Texas Hippie Coalition. Texas Hippie Coalition has been on a consistent run of putting out an album every two years since 2008. Pride Of Texas (08), Rollin (10), Peacemaker (12), Ride On (14), Dark Side Of Black (16) have all been very consistent in sound, flying the flag high for Texas and that "Red Dirt Metal" sound. The song "Hands Up" showed up on a Spotify recommendation list for me, and since Spotify had done such a great job in the past with its recommendations for me, I was game to hit play and I'm glad I did. In that song, I heard a larger than life arena rock anthem with southern attitude and heavy guitar aggression, I had not heard since my last spin of a Pantera album. They are not near as "Thrashy" as Pantera, but I think that southern flair mixed with the heavy guitars is what makes me think Pantera a little. Guitarist Cord Pool, Nevada Romo, and Drummer Tim Braun, along with vocalist and founding "MC" Big Dad Ritch, flood the speakers and stages of the world with a "get up and break some shit" attitude. This is what initially attracted me to the band, and why I set out to find out more about this band of outlaws, I knew very little about other than the name which I had heard in circles previously. I reached out to have that conversation with Big Dad Ritch and find out more about this "new to me" band, I had embraced and wanted to share with the Growin' Up Rock audience. What I found in this interview was a dude who is absolutely dedicated to his music and his fans, which in this day and age is refreshing. All bands say they love their fans, but as you will find out THC practices what they preach in making it feel like one big sweaty rock n roll family. BDR and I talk about the upcoming tour, keeping on track with putting out a new album in 2018 and some fun memories and stories about growing up in Texas, his dedicated fans, and a brush with greatness that included the late great Stevie Ray Vaughn and Dimebag Daryl.
