Podchaser Cole Raven, Running Wild- EP056
EOn this episode of Growin' Up Rock, we talk with Podchaser co-founder Cole Raven. Podcasts are booming. There's a podcast for everything, and Podchaser’s database and discovery engine has quickly become a go-to resource for podcast devotees. Officially beta-launched in July 2017, Podchaser is often called the IMDB or Rotten Tomatoes of podcasting, allowing listeners to rate and review shows, as well as individual episodes. In addition to Podchaser’s awesome review and rating system that is SUPER easy to use, they also allow you the listener to put together your own favorite playlist of shows and share easily throughout all your social media accounts. (Find our favorite Episode Playlist Here). With a library of over 18 million podcast episodes, they are the one-stop-shop for all things related to discovering awesome new podcasts to listen to and share with whomever you want. Growin' Up Rock caught up with co-founder Cole Raven to get the inside scoop on how Podchaser developed, what they have to offer, and what they're trying to achieve as a company. We also get to know him and find out more about Cole and the massive amount of podcasts he listens to as he’s running obstacle courses or training for the next season of Survivor (OK We completely made that part up about Survivor, but I think he might be good on it.). We vow to help Cole with his playlist by adding a healthy dose of Rock n Roll to improve his time out on the running course. Hear from Cole what he thinks makes a great podcast. In addition to all of this, Sonny and Steven decide to go Punk, so tune in to find out what we mean. Help us fund the Rock N Pod Expo 2 this year in Nashville. The Filthy 15 – EP055
EIn this episode we get down and dirty with a closer look at the infamous Filthy 15 list of rock and pop songs, put out by the PMRC in 1985. What happens in 1985 when politicians' wives, with way too much time on their hands, catch their children walking around the house singing songs they find objectionable? Find out in this episode of Growin’ Up Rock, as Sonny and Steven explore the PMRC and the so-called list of Filthy 15 songs that were put on this earth to destroy the youth of America. We discuss, in our opinions, what they got right and what they got so horribly wrong. We rock some of the songs on the list so you can judge for yourself, and we play one that missed the list. In 1985, there were a million tunes that could have made the list, so why these 15? Music is an art form which we feel should be left open to interpretation, not censored by people who think they know what I should and should not be listening to. That being said, with what is out in the world today, I do think parents should be doing their job, and listen to what little Timmy and Suzie are listening to, so they can decide on a case-by-case basis whether or not they are mature enough to handle the content and not do damage to an impressionable developing mind that was not ready to hear it yet in the first place. On The Road At Summer NAMM – Bonus
ETypically on Growin' Up Rock, we are all about the music and the artists who create it, but in this episode we take our show on the road and head to Nashville for Summer NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) industry event to learn more about what's happening in the business of music. At the show, we have quick chats with producer/engineer Nick Raskulinecz (Rush, Halestorm, Foo Fighters) and Living Colour bassist Doug Wimbish. Then marketing manager Matt Brown at EVH guitars gives us the story behind Eddie Van Halen's Eruption '78 series guitar packages. We run into Decibel Geek Alumni, Toddzilla and attend concerts with Poison, Cheap Trick, Pop Evil, and Thee Rock n Roll Residency while hanging out with our friends at The Decibel Geek. The NAMM show (National Association of Music Merchants) happens twice a year and isn't open to the public. The expo area showcases the latest tools and instruments on the market so that merchants can place their orders to get the stuff in their stores for musicians to purchase. So while the event is restricted to music industry insiders, the bonus of this is that often there are artist walking around taking a look at the latest products or demoing equipment. Inside Bob Nalbandian’s Metal Heart – EP054
EIn this episode, we talk with Bob Nalbandian, director of the docuseries “Inside Metal: The Pioneers Of Hard Rock And Metal.” Bob shares his growing up rock stories and some amazing stories about making these documentaries and growing up in LA during this glorious time for hard rock and metal music. In the not-too-distant future, the awesome bands of the 70’s and 80’s that we grew up loving and seeing live in concert be just a memory. Time stops for no man. That’s why it’s increasingly important for documentaries to be made by people like Bob Nalbandian who grew up in LA and is an ardent fan of hard rock and metal. Bob was into the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) and some of the awesome local acts happening out in LA during the musical explosion of the 80’s and early 90’s. Bob Nalbandian loves the music and connected first hand with the musicians, many of whom grew up in Los Angeles at a time when bands and fans filled local clubs like the Whiskey, The Troubadour, The Starwood, and The Country Club. You've heard of Motley Crue, Van Halen, Ratt, and Quiet Riot, but for every one of those bands there were five others that were every bit as popular in the clubs at the time that you never heard of unless you lived on the Sunset Strip when the LA metal scene exploded. We had an awesome time just hanging out and talking with Bob about some of the stories, characters, and memories he had seeing these killer rock n roll bands coming of age in the early stages of their careers out in Hollywood. Jacob Cade – Young Rock Rising – EP053
EJacob Cade represents the young rock rising in music today. The young 19 year old up and coming singer / guitar player from Denver sits down with Growin’ Up Rock to share his experiences working with famed hard rock producer Michael Wagner, and co-writing songs from his upcoming EP release “Hunger” with Lzzy Hale and Joe Hottinger from Halestorm, Rachel Bolan from Skid Row, and Paul Taylor from Winger. We discuss the state of the music business today through the eyes of a young artist. We play some choice cuts from Jacob’s album as well as some of his favorite tunes to crank up. They say that Rock is Dead, and after my visit to Denver and sitting down with Jacob Cade, I think Rock lives strongly in the heart of the young. All you have to do is press play on either Jacob’s 1st album “The Prince Of Rock n Roll” which he wrote when he was 16, or one of the new tunes off his upcoming EP “Hunger” to hear that he not only loves Rock and classic rock like Zeppelin, GNR, Slash, and Aerosmith, but he writes music that has its sights set on bringing back rock to the mainstream. Raw in your face loud guitar riffs with thundering bass and drums layered with aggressive youthful vocals with almost a punk attitude, rips through your car stereo speakers while heading down the highway to a big arena rock show. Ahhh, don’t that just bring back the memories? It's completely exciting for us to see rock is still alive and well in the youth of America. Jacob Cade, is in the early stages of his ‘Growin’ Up Rock Story”, but he was kind enough to open his door and share with us all the amazing stories he has already built up and given us his insight and views on where he may go from here. Jacob will also be appearing at this years Rock n Pod 2 Expo in Nashville, so hopefully you will make the trip. It’s an entertaining discussion with some righteous loud rock n roll mixed in. Indiana Jones Of Rock N Roll – EP052
EWe talk to Christian Swain, host of the Rock N Roll Archaeology Project Podcast about his Growin’ Up Rock story and his goal with this massive project he has taken on. Why he feels there is an obligation to educate today’s youth about rock music. I like to refer to Christian as the Indiana Jones of Rock n Roll Podcasting. He spends a great deal of time putting together his shows and now he has a whole network of shows that tie into the Mother ship Podcast that is the Rock n Roll Archaeology Project or since we are among friends RNRAP. It’s All In The Numbers – EP051
EIt's all in the numbers, or at least that's what a numbers guy like Hollywood would have us all believe. It's really simple, there is a ton of great rock bands and great rock songs that revolve around numbers. Lets face it, music itself is all about beats and time signatures, aka Numbers!! In this episode Sonny takes the even numbers and Steven embraces the fact that he is the odd man out, and begrudgingly takes the odd numbers. We discuss some of Steven's latest concert adventures and play some bands and songs that have everything to do with the numbers, duh, the title of the episode is "It's All In The Numbers". Graduation Day – EP050
EIt's Graduation Day at Growin' Up Rock, and our friend Bakko from the Cobras and Fire Podcast is here to help us figure out where our lives went horribly wrong. Do you remember your Senior Year? Your Graduation Day? What was your life like at that time? What rock bands and concerts impacted you during this pivotal time in your life? Sonny goes missing, and we are sure he is completely trying to avoid Bakko like the plague. Tune in to find out the truth of Hollywood's disappearance. Growin' Up Rock is halfway to 100 episodes and in this, our 50th episode, we decide to reflect on our senior year in high school. Steven and special guest Bakko, dig out their personal yearbooks and read some of the many ridiculous notes written in the back written by friends they may or may not remember and pick some great songs from albums released during their graduation years. Stand up, raise your fist in the air and reminisce about your high school years while we mix in some great rock n roll for you to listen to. Help us fund the Rock N Pod Expo 2 this year in Nashville. Stryper’s Michael Sweet – EP049
EStryper has been a Growin' Up Rock part of my life since they released the Yellow and Black Attack back in 1984. Singer and lead guitarist Michael Sweet is an amazing singer and we feel criminally underrated as a guitar player, so it is an honor to have him sit in with us on today's podcast. We talk to Michael about some of his earliest memories and influences, and we get into Stryper's latest release "God Damn Evil." Check out GUR co-host Sonny Pooni's album review right here. Michael is the driving force behind Stryper and he appears to be one of the hardest working men in rock n roll, with solo projects, Stryper albums, touring, Sweet and Lynch records, etc. When does this dude find the time to do stuff, like you know SLEEP!?! To me, it seems like the music the band has been releasing on the last two albums is as good, if not better, than anything they released in their so called "Hey Day." I say their "Hey Day" is today!! So grab your bible (just kidding, no preaching here, this is a rock show) and turn it up while you check out the latest episode of the Growin' Up Rock podcast. Life, Love & Rock N Roll – EP046
EWhat's it all about? It's about Life, Love, & Rock n Roll. At least that's what Sonny and I think. On this episode we find out how a band called Granny 4 Barrel made so much noise and a lasting impression after I showed up late and completely missed their live set. We discuss the upcoming summer concert series. I tell you all about playing hooky on a school night in order to rock n roll my way through the mean streets of Atlanta, while Sonny travels from city to city, selling his companies cult like wears. We decide that part of hanging out and shooting the shit about concerts and our wives, is also playing a little Def Leppard, Kix, Nordic Union, Billy Idol, Hell's Addiction, and The Darkness. Joel Hoekstra Interview – EP045
EWhitesnake's guitarist, Joel Hoekstra is the perfect portrait of what today’s guitar god looks like. The man comes across as humble with true personal values, but on stage just enough attitude and swagger that draws you in, and has you standing on your chair with your fist raised high above your head. Oh, and we can’t forget the most important trait in a guitar hero. You must be able to wield your guitar like a sword in an all out musical war, which Joel does without a doubt. In this episode we talk with Whitesnake guitarist, Joel Hoekstra. Joel is a guitar hero in demand and has built a solid resume that is second to none. Joel is currently part of one of the best twin guitar attacks in rock n roll playing alongside Reb Beach in Whitesnake. In addition to Whitesnake, Joel spends the rest of his year sharing the stage with Cher, and Trans Siberian Orchestra. Joel Hoekstra has not only recorded several solo albums, including Joel Hoekstra’s 13, an album Joel released in 2015 which is more a collection of actual songs, rather than a collection of instrumentals which you might expect in a guitar players solo effort. Joel spent several years as a partner in crime with Brad Gillis to the dual guitar efforts of Night Ranger and playing in the Broadway production of Rock Of Ages. We talk with Joel about his earliest memories around his musical upbringing and discuss his gateways into Rock n Roll. We get into all the musical relationships he has built with so many of today's superstars and how his work ethic and positive attitude has made him in demand and given him many opportunities that most musicians in his line of work would kill to have. Joel picks a handful of songs from Whitesnake and Joel Hoekstra 13 to share with the listeners and we talk about the upcoming Whitesnake tour with Foreigner as well as a new album coming from Whitesnake. Steve Stevens Interview – EP043
EThe amazing and super talented Grammy award winning guitarist Steve Stevens is interviewed on this episode of the Growin' Up Rock Podcast. Long time Billy Idol guitarist and songwriter Steve Stevens was gracious enough to spend time with me and tell me some of his rock n roll story. In this interview we cover a massive amount of ground in Steve's career starting with his youth and growing up in NY to currently planning a summer tour with Billy Idol. We discuss his long time partnership with Billy Idol, putting his name on the Atomic Playboys project, the many collaborations he's had with Vince Neil, Michael Jackson, and The Top Gun soundtrack just to name a few. Steve picks a few choice cuts to play that just don't get enough love from his work with Vince Neil, The Atomic Playboys Project and of course Billy Idol. Prince, We Like It Heavy – EP042
EWe Love Prince and we like it heavy, so we want to celebrate the rock n roll side of his music on this 2nd anniversary of his passing. Legends never die. “I never meant to cause use any sorrow, I never meant to cause you any pain…” Whether Prince was preaching to the crowd, telling a personal story or encouraging everyone to get funky, the messages were loud and clear. Although he is no longer physically present, he lives with us through his incredible music. On We like it heavy: Prince we discuss the iconic artist, Prince. Although we all love “the hits”, we go a little deeper and cover the more guitar driven rock tracks. There are not many mainstream artists that appeal to the hardcore rock/heavy metal fans. It’s just not cool in our narrowly focused world. But, Prince seemed to connect to everyone. So, whether you love pop, R&B, rock, or funk, there is Prince music for everyone at Growin’ Up Rock. Loverboy w/ Paul Dean – EP041
ELoverboy lead guitarist Paul Dean is a rare breed in a rock band. He’s loyal to almost a fault, and in a world dominated by Guitar Gods, his ego is checked at the door while focusing on writing music not to suit his own stature, but rather put his lead singer Mike Reno in the best possible situation to use what Paul says is “one of the best rock voices in history” Formed in Calgary in 1979, Loverboy ruled the rock airwaves and MTV from 80 -85 with an amazing string of hits and platinum albums. Tunes like “Turn Me Loose”, “Hot Girls In Love”, “Lovin’ Every Minute Of It”, “Working For The Weekend”, and more. After a successful debut album with Canadian rockers Streetheart, Paul Dean was sent packing back to Calgary where he got back up on the horse, coming together with rock solid vocalist Mike Reno to form Loverboy. Paul Dean was instrumental in the success of Loverboy, co-writing on almost all the songs for the first 4 records, which by the way were the ones that made Loverboy a household name in the 80s. In this episode, Growin’ Up Rock’s Steven Michael talks on the phone with Loverboy’s guitarist Paul Dean to discuss his early years, growing up in a remote Canadian resort area, playing around the campfires, and seeing Jimi Hendrix and Vanilla Fudge play live. We get into his early bands, Loverboy, and what he feels his role in the band has always been. We discuss why he thinks Loverboy’s members have stayed in tact for so many years continuing to play out live each and every year. We talk about the release of his new single and solo album, and just have a genuinely great conversation with one of Steven’s many influential Growin’ Up Rock bands Like always - Get out there and support live and recorded rock n roll music. Texas Hippie Coalition w/ Big Dad Ritch – EP040
ETexas Hippie Coalition. Formed in Denison, Texas by vocalist Big Dad Ritch and former bass player John Exall, the band plays a brand of music they they call "Red Dirt Metal". Imagine if you will, that bands could get together and have a Rock n Roll Love Child. Figuratively speaking if ZZ Top, and Pantera were to get together they would have for sure bred something sounding a lot like Texas Hippie Coalition. Texas Hippie Coalition has been on a consistent run of putting out an album every two years since 2008. Pride Of Texas (08), Rollin (10), Peacemaker (12), Ride On (14), Dark Side Of Black (16) have all been very consistent in sound, flying the flag high for Texas and that "Red Dirt Metal" sound. The song "Hands Up" showed up on a Spotify recommendation list for me, and since Spotify had done such a great job in the past with its recommendations for me, I was game to hit play and I'm glad I did. In that song, I heard a larger than life arena rock anthem with southern attitude and heavy guitar aggression, I had not heard since my last spin of a Pantera album. They are not near as "Thrashy" as Pantera, but I think that southern flair mixed with the heavy guitars is what makes me think Pantera a little. Guitarist Cord Pool, Nevada Romo, and Drummer Tim Braun, along with vocalist and founding "MC" Big Dad Ritch, flood the speakers and stages of the world with a "get up and break some shit" attitude. This is what initially attracted me to the band, and why I set out to find out more about this band of outlaws, I knew very little about other than the name which I had heard in circles previously. I reached out to have that conversation with Big Dad Ritch and find out more about this "new to me" band, I had embraced and wanted to share with the Growin' Up Rock audience. What I found in this interview was a dude who is absolutely dedicated to his music and his fans, which in this day and age is refreshing. All bands say they love their fans, but as you will find out THC practices what they preach in making it feel like one big sweaty rock n roll family. BDR and I talk about the upcoming tour, keeping on track with putting out a new album in 2018 and some fun memories and stories about growing up in Texas, his dedicated fans, and a brush with greatness that included the late great Stevie Ray Vaughn and Dimebag Daryl. Girl Gone Bad – EP039
EEver wanted a good girl gone bad? A wild woman? A sexy temptress? The girl next door, who is much more than you fantasized about? A girl gone bad is what every red blooded male secretly wants. We ALL love a bad girl.......at least for a little while. We here at Growin' Up Rock, are not a whole lot different. In our youth, we were drawn to rock n roll and hard rock in particular because it was a little dangerous, rebellious, and most importantly the chicks flocked to it. Make no mistake about it, every teenage dude wants to play in a band, because he wants to score high points with the ladies. Since the early days of Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, and The Beatles, rock n roll was cool and seem to attract the bad girl or at least a good girl dreaming of being bad. Steven and Sonny talk about their secret fantasies that involve scantily clad women, rock n roll videos, fire breathing dragons, and the 7 dwarfs..........OK that last part was totally and completely made up, but I bet it made you raise an eyebrow or at least chuckle. Talking Rock w/ Mark Strigl – EP038
EOn this Episode of Growin' Up Rock, Sonny and Steven are Talking Rock with Talking Metal's main man Mark Strigl. You think you know a few things about Talking Metal and about Mark Strigl, but you have no idea. The fellas have a great time digging into Mark's Growin' Up Rock past and talking all things music. Mark has been doing a rock podcast since 2005, and In fact when Mark started, you could count the amount of Podcast dedicated to rock music on one hand. Now a days the market is flooded with plenty of killer rock podcast available to help get you through the daily grind of work and life and Talking Metal along with Growin' Up Rock is a nice place for you to start. Mark has interviewed tons of great guest over the years, and has plenty of great stories to share, but Mark's story is so much more than extensive and entertaining than just hosting a Podcast. We get into Mark's Growin' Up Rock story as he shares with us how a rock and metal loving dude, who once felt out of place and like a "geek" among the rockers of the 80s, quickly adapted to the grunge music of the 90s and became comfortable as a "cool kid" working at MTV and VH1. Mark's story includes attending Berklee School Of Music, playing in numerous bands around the New York area, and working at MTV, VH1, Sci-Fi Channel and Fuse while getting the opportunity to jam on Video with various musicians from bands like Exodus, Overkill, Twisted Sister, and more. Mark is not a rock star that sold millions of albums, but he has a great and entertaining story that any music fan is going to enjoy, so delay no more and check out our convo with Mark Strigl from Talking Metal. Going Solo – EP037
EHey Ma!!, I'm going solo. In what could very well become a on-going series for Growin' Up Rock down the road, Steven, Hollywood, along with very special guest Joe Polo from Podcast Rock City join forces to discuss several artist who have left or taken a break from the Mothership bands that helped create their famous status in the first place, to go solo or join forces with other artist in a new venture to create kick ass rock n roll. One never knows what drives an artist to leave one creative force to join another or in many situations set out on their own to in a sense become their own boss, and take their careers into their own hands. Maybe its money, or maybe its ego. Perhaps its a "yes" man by their side telling them how great they are, and how they are the "real" talent in the band. Hell, for all we know it's as simple as they hate the other dudes in the band and just need to get away. Either way, it has provided the fans and buyers of all things music, both trainwrecks, and absolute gems of new music to crank loud and proud. In this first installment of the series, we go deep on a few artist and tracks to find some really great hard rocking stuff to jam the speakers with and on other selections we stay a little closer to the obvious, while choosing maybe the not so obvious tunes to play. We have great time visiting with Joe Polo and find out a little about his Growin' Up Rock story. We find out that Joe does like other music besides just Kiss and maybe in not much of a surprise, one of Joe's selections for the night involves Kiss, go figure, I never saw that coming. We hope you enjoy this episode, and that you share some of your selections on our Facebook page to start the conversation with other listeners. The one thing we found out when starting to research this episode, was the massive amount of artist especially in today's musical environment that have created awesome music as a solo act or part of a completely new band apart from what originally they were know for. This is exactly what inspired the reason this may become a on-going series for the GUR team. Cell Phone Roulette – EP036
EIt's time to spin the Growin' Up Rock cell phone roulette wheel of rock n roll. Steve and Hollywood, pull out their personal cell phones and let the shuffle button dictate exactly what music is going to be played on the show this evening. Have no fear, they have made sure specific for this episode that their massive and diverse libraries have been segregated to only include killer rock n roll music, so we don't unwillingly play some of that Hall & Oates, or Flock Of Seagulls that Hollywood loves so much. We have no idea what music will be played until the shuffle happens but what we do know is that it will be loud and rockin. We also discuss some of the completely ridiculous other Podcast that we listen to and why we are at war with most of them. How politics and religion play a part in us choosing the music we play and what it all means. OK that last part was completely made up and really has nothing to do with this latest episode. We never get into politics or religion and we pretty love most of the other podcast we listen to and in fact are friends with those guys. Klassik ’78 Interview w/ Joe – EP035
EKlassik ‘78 is a sonic trip back to your bedroom circa 1978, with your Kiss records on the turntable cranked up , distorting the cheap speakers ever so slightly in order to shake the walls while your parental units were away. Steve and Sonny are back with another interview with Klassik ‘78 (Steve interviewed K78 mastermind Tom in EP 2 - Listen to it Here). This time around the guys interview Joe (Aka The Voice Of Paul Stanley) from Klassik ‘78. Joe talks about the recording of the new EP “Side Two” and they go track by track through the new tunes and discuss how he ended up with K78, along with his role in the band. They also have a little fun talking about Joe’s favorite Kiss albums in a lightning round. If you are not familiar with Klassik ‘78, the best way to describe them is a band that records completely original music that sounds Exactly like ‘74 - ‘78 era Kiss. Make no mistake about it, this shit is good, from the classic sound of the recording to the way the songs are written and come across to the listener. To a Kiss Army soldier, this is a musical wet dream. If you are a Kiss freak and have followed the band over the years, then you are completely aware that time keeps moving and the bands sound has moved right along with it, but hearing Klassik ‘78, makes it OK to be a kid again and remember why you became a Kiss fan in the first place. Not only does K78 produce that classic sound from an era long gone by a band loved by so many, but the original songs they are writing and recording are freakin great. Don’t get me wrong, you are not going to see Klassik ‘78 songs at the top of today's charts, but you we’rent going to see Kiss there back in ‘78 either and their music kicked ass. Enuff Z’ Nuff Conversation w/ Chip Z’ Nuff – EP034
EEnuff Z' Nuff is a band from the late 80s formed in Chicago by current bass player and vocalist Chip Z' Nuff and former vocalist Donnie Vie, that in my opinion never got a fair shake. They may or may not have contributed to their own trials and tribulations through sex, drugs, alcohol, and bad decisions, but no matter the issues and who was to blame, the bottom line was they wrote freaking great songs. Enuff Z' Nuff had a great mixture of fantastic melodies, huge hooks, lush harmonies, and hard rocking guitars. With a feel straight out of the Beatles catalog, but with their own spin, they were a power pop band at heart that were lumped into the hair metal category with many others from that era. Growin' Up Rock attended a local concert and sat down with Chip Z' Nuff after soundcheck to talk about his and the bands early days. We talk about how a visit to the Howard Stern show changed the path of the band and we get insight into the current band lineup. Chip gives us exciting news about a brand new upcoming release "Diamond Boy" due out in June on Frontiers Records. The band played a fantastic set that night on the bill with Junkyard, and The all female tribute band "The Iron Maidens" Chip looked right at home as the frontman and sounded great singing all the old material. The rest of the band, Tony Fennell: Guitar, Tory Stoffregen: Guitar, and Dan Hill: Drums were tight and all great players in their own right. The Friday night crowd was treated to the following set: Baby Loves You Kiss The Clown Heaven Or Hell In The Groove Solo Section Jean Genie (Bowie Cover) Fly High Michelle New Thing Dog On A Bone Wheels If the band comes to your neighborhood, make sure you get out there and support them and any other killer rock n roll bands that are out there playing each and every night. Sons Of Apollo Interview w/ Jeff Scott Soto – EP033
ESuper group Sons Of Apollo vocalist Jeff Scott Soto has embraced his artistry and explored many genres of music that make him happy. Being able to be creative in so many different genres of music has not only made Jeff a go to singer by many artist and producers, but it shows just how well rounded a musician Jeff Scott Soto has become. He might of gone on to be the permanent replacement singer for Steve Perry in Journey or perhaps even the new singer in Queen replacing the legendary Freddie Mercury, but then he would have felt trapped in a box, performing songs he loves, but someone else created, instead of giving him the creative outlet he craved as an artist and being able to share his gift of melody and hooks with the world. On this episode of Growin' Up Rock, we sit down with Sons Of Apollo vocalist Jeff Scott Soto and take a high view walk through less talked about parts of his career. We find out how Co-Host Sonny Pooni's Musical Man Crush started his musical journey in life and how he may have almost become Queen's new singer. We get into his current role with SOA, and find out how he works gaining his individual identity in a band of Superstar instrumentalist. Kiss Expo Konfessionals Pt.2 – EP032
EIt's time to finish up our coverage of the 2018 Atlanta Kiss Expo with this epic marathon episode of the Kiss Expo Konfessionals Pt. 2. This is the next best thing to actually being there, as we recorded live at the expo, sitting down with Kiss fans, special guest, and fellow podcasters to get their take on the expo and talk to them about their Kiss and Vinnie Vincent Obsession. Along the way we play some pretty killer music, which helps to put in perspective all the great stories from the awesome people we get to meet. In the second and final part of our Kiss Konfessionals from the 2018 Kiss Expo in Atlanta, we finish strong in a celebration of Vinnie Vincent & Kiss fandom. Everyone had a Rock n Roll story to share with Growin' Up Rock on how they found Kiss and how it affected their lives. What songs and albums they prefer, and how it feels when we ask them to choose their favorite Kiss Song / Album, comparing it often to choosing their favorite child. Bob Kulick Interview – EP029
EBob Kulick is an amazing guitar player and Grammy Award winning producer who has played and written with artist like Kiss, W.A.S.P., Diana Ross, Meatloaf, Patti Labelle, and Michael Bolton just to name a few. Steven & Sonny interview Bob to discuss his earliest musical memories. We also get into the recording of his newest record “Skeletons In The Closet”. (You can check out Hollywood’s album review right HERE) We discuss some of the many tribute records he has produced including the one for which he won a Grammy. Bob has cemented his place in rock n roll history, but his story is not one that is up front and familiar to most. Although his younger brother Bruce Kulick may have gotten more attention becoming a member of Kiss in the 80s and 90s for a span of 12 years, Bob also is part of the Kiss family having played on many of the bands albums. Bob has seen and done plenty in the world of Rock, Pop, and R&B that no doubt will supply him with an endless amount of stories to fill an entertaining book one day. Until that book comes out, he was kind enough to spend a little time with us and talk about topics like growing up around New York in the late 60s and meeting artist like Jimi Hendrix as well as playing some of the famous venues around town like Cafe Wha. As an added bonus and because we wanted to test Bob’s cat like reflexes, we threw a bunch of random questions at him in a “Lightning Round” or not so lightning round - You decide. Bob was a great sport and we had a lot of fun grilling him on some of his preferred taste revolving around music. Vinnie Vincent Family Tree – EP028
EVinnie Vincent is a mystery, he’s an enigma, in fact he’s a mystery wrapped up in an enigma. He is a talented songwriter, guitar player, producer and studio engineer, and even has some vocal abilities as you will hear from some of the demos. In order to unwrap this enigma, we needed to bring in the heavy artillery, so we went after our favorite Vinnie Vincent geek, our buddy and special guest Chris Czynszak from the Decibel Geek Podcast. Steve, Hollywood, and Chris are getting ready for the upcoming Atlanta Kiss Expo, and what better way to do this, then by exploring the Vinnie Vincent Family Tree. We discuss Vinnie’s early years, his time in Kiss, and The Invasion. We get into some rare demos from Warrior and talk about some of the interesting recordings we have come across including songs with The Bangles, Wendy O’ Williams, Jeff Scott Soto, and John Waite. and if that was not enough, we bust Sonny's balls about being a social media icon. Don't miss the music or laughs and check out this episode. We are sure you will not regret it. This will kick off an amazing several week of Kiss related content, from upcoming interviews with Kiss FAQ host Julian Gill, Bob Kulick, Klassik '78, and some other special surprises. It will all bubble over into February with releases of our coverage of the Atlanta Kiss Expo. The Babys Interview – EP027
EThe Babys co-founding members Tony Brock and Wally Stocker jumped on a Skype call for an interview with GUR host Steven Michael for an awesome and entertaining walk through their careers. Tony Brock The Babys are a British rock band that formed in 1975. They released five studio albums between ‘76 and ‘80 before reforming in 2013 to release a sixth studio album called “I’ll Have Some Of That.” Though the band had some success with Billboard chart climbers like “Isn’t It Time” and “Everytime I Think Of You,” they never really exploded like some of their contemporaries. Member changes and management changes during the recording of their third release “Head First” didn’t help matters, nor did mega changes at their record label. Wally Stocker In my opinion, The Babys helped lay the blueprint in the mid ‘70s for melodic hard rock and AOR that would birth many bands which would shape the massive rock sound in the 80s. Over the years, The Babys lineup has included members John Waite who had a successful solo career with the hits “Missing You” and “Changes,” Jonathan Cain who went on to become a integral part of Journey at the pinnacle of their career, and Ricky Phillips who played alongside Waite, Cain and Neal Schon in Bad English and also has been a part of Styx since ‘03. Drummer Tony Brock went on to play with Rod Stewart for 12 years as well as for Sir Elton John, and he also produced Australian superstars Jimmy Barnes and Keith Urban. Lead Guitarist Wally Stocker had a post-Babys career with Air Supply and Rod Stewart. Now in 2018 with its newest members John Bisaha (Bass and Lead Vocals), guitarist Joey Sykes, keyboardist Francesco Saglietti and The Babettes Holly Bisaha and Elisa Chadbourne joining founders Brock and Stocker, the band is back with a classic but current Babys sound. Check out their latest release and make sure you see them live when they hit your city. It’s worth your efforts as the band is garnering a lot of new buzz for the live shows and their new material. Color By Numbers – EP024
ENumbers and colors are all around us, so we decide to explore some song titles and bands that contain a number or color in the title. There are a shit ton of songs that either have a color or a number in the title. Hell for that matter, there are even a few band's with a color or a number as part of the band name. There is no way in hell we will ever get to all of them. Sounds like the birth of a recurring series!! In a “Hollywood” exclusive series opener, we are going to talk about band's with songs that either include a color or number in the title. The first episode will focus more on deeper cuts from some very well known bands, and some great rocking tracks from a few lesser known bands that we love here at GUR. We are only scratching the surface on what will become another recurring theme in various future episodes. Let us know how you like the theme, and if you would like to see more of this type of theme in the future. Bob shares his experience as part of that competition as well as some great stories about playing on the road and opening up for acts like The Offspring and Enuff Z'Nuff. When The Lights Go Down – EP023
ESonny and I have been to a ton of concerts over the years between us. There have been great ones and some not so great, but the one thing we both agree on, is that one of the most hair raising, goosebumps giving moments of the entire night, is when those house lights go down, that intro tape rolls, and the band comes on the stage with a flash kickin’ ass launching into that first song of the night. In this episode, we search our failing memories to find a handful of those great concerts and share those memories and opening kick ass songs with all of our fellow rock n rollers. Under The Influence Of The Stones – EP022
EWhen you think of iconic rock bands, you have to think of The Rolling Stones. Not a Stones Fan? Not everyone is, but understand that Jagger and Richards laid the blueprint for many, many rock stars to come in the late 70's, 80's, and 90's. Guys like Steven Tyler & Joe Perry, Slash & Axl, and numerous others were influenced in many ways through the music and swagger of The Rolling Stones. In what will be a recurring series of Growin’ Up Rock, Hollywood, and Steve will be discussing some of the most iconic and influential rock n roll bands in history, and the hard rock and metal bands that were influenced by not only their music, but the show, style, and attitude of these rock titans. In each "Under The Influence" episode, we will pick one iconic band we felt influenced many of the hard rock and metal bands we loved back in the day, and maybe some of the newer bands coming out today that we're digging on. So even if you are not a huge fan of the band we think were influential, the bands we will be featuring and the music we will be playing will be right up your alley. Everyone knows that you can’t discuss the term rock n roll without mentioning the Rolling Stones, so we thought this was as good a place as any to start. Bands like Aerosmith, GNR, Cinderella, Hanoi Rocks, New York Dolls, Kiss, The Black Crowes, and countless others were all influenced in some way by The Rolling Stones. Word of the day: Phenomenal Reviews: Colin Francis: “Hi there. Just wanted to say your last episode ballad is fantastic it has turned me onto some old rock bands I haven’t heard of which is unusual for me so at the moment I am checking all them bands out as we speak thanks and keep up the great work” Jason Kearney: “I was at a show of theirs (Tesla) here in Reno where I helped shield his mom as she was center and up front for the show and they played Mama's Fool. Trixter Interview w/Mark Gus Scott – EP021
ETrixter was a young band from New Jersey that exploded onto the hard rock scene in 1990 with the hits, "Give It To Me Good" and "One In A Million," just before the bottom gave out from Rock to grunge around '92. Charismatic drummer Mark Gus Scott has been there from the beginning to see it all happen. We jumped on the phone with Mark for a long and entertaining conversation. We talked about the early days of Trixter, and some of the killer tours they have been a part of, including Kiss, Scorpions, and the now infamous Blood, Sweat, & Beers tour with Warrant and Firehouse. Mark shared some stories and memories involving firearms, fireworks, and alcohol, along with a double-size helping of rock n roll. Mark's not just your average drummer pounding the skins with little or no musical inclination other than smashing the shit out of cymbals. While still a high school Trumpet player, Mark was awarded a special citation to attend the University of Hartford's Hartt School of Music over the summers and study music, which he puts to great use in the release of a new and traditional holiday EP called "Christmas Miracle." The first single is Mark's rendition of the classic "Ave Maria," and he will be giving 100% of the proceeds of the sale of the single to the worthy charity "Hope 4 Kids International" which focuses on serving children living in impoverished environments around the world. You can support the cause by picking up the EP for the holidays and sharing with friends and family. Hero Albums To Zero Albums – EP020
EEver heard of the Sophomore Jinx? Sometimes a band can spend their entire career writing that absolute gem of a debut album, only to follow it up with a complete failure. Sometimes that so called sophomore jinx even happens in the middle of a band's career. Steve and Sonny get into a fun conversation about some bands they love, that produced a fantastic album, only to follow it up with a less than stellar offer. So in other words they went from a hero of an album to a complete Zero, by dropping an atomic stink bomb of a record. Agree to disagree with some of our fine selections? Let us know all about it. Stevie boy likes to rock, and he does not want to slow dance to the latest Metallica song. This week we try to bridge the gap between the boys and give Steve and Sonny the best of both worlds. We Sold Our Souls For RnR – EP018
EOn this Halloween Spooktacular Episode, Sonny and Steve discuss some of their growin’ up rock stories centering around Halloween and the witching season. We talk scary album covers, scary songs, scary bands and selling our soul for Rock N Roll. We look funny in and out of costume, but holding up kids for their bags of candy is just a small part of Helloween, least we not forget all the killer Rock n Roll that goes along with it. Grab a peanut butter cup and a candy bar and turn your stereos up to 11. “Grown Ups Of The Week” Steve Wright & Podder Than Hell Podcast Nerds with Words Podcast Darryl Alber (Agree w/you on UFO but not Deep Purple, also You're beginning to take up an inordinate amount of time in my week(ha,ha).
