Brian Tatler Of Diamond Head – Bonus
EEpisode Description: Steven speaks with founding guitarist Brian Tatler of the band Diamond Head about the bands history and the recording of their upcoming album . On May 24th Diamond Head will release their 8th studio album "The Coffin Train". What’s The Story: I first got into Diamond Head after hearing "Am I Evil" on the B-Side of a Metallica picture disc and I was hooked. I went out and picked up everything I could. If they were good enough to get into Kerrang, and be part of the NWOBHM sound then they must be great. The band was formed in 1976 under the riff-rolling leadership of guitarist Brian Tatler. DIAMOND HEAD would quickly establish themselves as a vanguard of the exploding New Wave Of British Heavy Metal scene. Their genre-defining debut album Lightning To The Nations, influenced and opened gates for many of the metal bands I grew up loving. The Coffin Train, DIAMOND HEAD's eighth studio album, is a glorious testimony to Brian Tatler and Rasmus Bom Andersens' masterful ability to create the flavors necessary for prime DIAMOND HEAD music. The record was recorded in several different places. Guitars, bass, and vocals at Vigo Studios in Walsall and drums at Circle Studios in Birmingham. The album was produced and mixed at Ras' Raw Sound Studio in London. Steven’s Mixed Tapes – Volume 1 EP98
EEpisode Description: The idea behind Steven's mixed tapes is basically to play some great rock music while sharing a few stories about growing up. Steven's mixed tapes is basically my version of a radio show. Radio wishes it played kick ass music like this and without the commercials or yearly subscription fees. What’s The Story: When I was a kid in school, I made it a point to put together mixed cassettes of all the bands and songs I loved. Everytime a new record came out or I read about some band in Kerrang magazine, I picked up the cassette and dubbed it off in my state of the art duel cassette player. I would bring them to school the next day and share them with all my metalhead buddies. Listener Questions, You Asked, We Answered – EP97
EEpisode Description: Sonny and Steven answer listener questions. They cram a bunch of great music into this already laugh filled episode while trying to answer some great questions about rock n roll and the meaning of life. OK, I made that last part up and besides they aren't qualified to answer life questions, they're idiots. What’s The Story: You asked and we answered. Sonny and I open our lives up to the listeners and answer a boatload of questions ranging from Sonny’s love for Alias and his hatred of Rush to why I can’t figure out the answer to a question in which the Podcast is named after. After 96 episodes, we figure why not turn over the questioning to some of our listeners and let them ask away. We did our best to answer most of the questions but some of the questions were, well how can I put this? Dumb! Top 10 Live Albums – EP 96
EEpisode Description: Sonny and I pick our Top 10 Live Albums growing up. We discuss why they were important to us, and play some of our favorite tracks from those albums. What’s The Story: Nowadays Live Albums are released all the time. If you are into a band, chances are they have released a live record. Back in the late 70’s and early 80’s live albums were much more of an event. In most cases the bands were already well established and the live album would be released about 4 or 5 records into the bands career. For me growing up and I suspect in a lot of other people’s lives, live albums were a way to check out a band. A greatest hits so to speak. If you liked it, then go down that “rabbit hole” and pick up some of the studio releases. In some artist cases, they owe everything to the live album. Peter Frampton and Kiss come to mind immediately. They were struggling before they released their first live albums. I consider myself much more of a studio track guy, but in my youth, I simply wore out the live albums we will be discussing in this episode. Mick Sweda of Lies, Deceit, & Treachery – EP095
EEpisode Description: Guitarist Mick Sweda joins Sonny and Steven to talk about his current band Lies, Deceit, & Treachery, as well as his time in the Bulletboys and King Kobra. Sweda is joined in Lies, Deceit & Treachery by two other original members of Bulletboys plus Last In Line frontman Andrew Freeman. We chat about some of the trials and tribulation of the music business and get into his earliest musical memories. What's The Story? We use the term "desert island" album a lot on this show. For both Sonny and I, the Bulletboys debut album falls into that category. Like so many others, I discovered the Bulletboys through the "Smooth Up In Ya" video on MTV, quickly went out and got the album, and became a fan. In addition to the Bulletboys record, I was also a fan of the King Kobra debut, and although not a "desert island" record, I was known to crank it up from time to time. So it was a real pleasure to speak to Mick, who was absolutely cool as hell and very gracious with his time. - Steven Michael Mick Sweda is a songwriter, guitarist and singer born in Gowanda, New York on April 18, 1960. After attending college on a drama scholarship and touring the east coast with various bands, Sweda moved to Los Angeles. He spent time in various musical projects, including the band Stormtrooper whose Armies of the Night EP surfaced in 1985. In 1984, he was approached by Carmine Appice to join his new band King Kobra, which had been signed to Capitol Records. Sweda recorded two records with King Kobra (Ready to Strike and Thrill of a Lifetime) and toured extensively, opening for bands such as Iron Maiden, Kiss and Ted Nugent. Sweda left the band in 1987 and started BulletBoys with Lonnie Vencent and Marq Torien, the latter of whom had briefly served as King Kobra's lead singer. The band signed to Warner Bros. Records in 1988. Upon the release of their eponymous debut, the band toured extensively opening for bands such as Cheap Trick, Bon Jovi, Ozzy Osbourne and others, as well as headlining theaters. BulletBoys recorded two more records for Warner Bros. (Freakshow and Za-Za) and supported both records with tours before Sweda left the band in 1993. EEpisode Description: Steven talks to legendary frontman Biff Byford of Saxon about the band's history and some of Biff's earliest musical memories. They discuss the current setlist and the overall Monsters of Rock Cruise. In addition to this great interview, Steven rounds up friends and fellow Saxon fans Kevin Williams and Brad Rusthoven to discuss their history with the band. The guys pick and play some of their favorite deep cuts from the band. What's The Story: Saxon is a band that was crucial in helping me to develop my taste in hard rock and metal music as a teenager growing up in the early 80s. I first discovered the band on a weekly trip to the mall record store, where I'd spend hours reading Kerrang magazine. My first money was spent picking up an import cassette of the very first Eagle Has Landed live record. From the opening of "Motorcycle Man," it was clear this was to be a new musical love for me. - Steven Michael Saxon are an English heavy metal band formed in 1977, in Barnsley. During the 1980s, Saxon established themselves as one of Europe's greatest metal acts. As one of the leaders of the new wave of British heavy metal, they had eight UK Top 40 albums, including four UK Top 10 albums and two Top 5 albums. The band also had numerous singles in the UK Singles Chart, chart success all over Europe and Japan, and in the United States. The band tour regularly and have sold more than 23 million albums worldwide. Considered one of the classic metal acts, Saxon have influenced a number of bands such as Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Testament, Exodus, Overkill, Mötley Crüe, Pantera, Helloween, Running Wild, Metal Church, Armored Saint, Dream Theater, Dokken, Skid Row, Sodom, Celtic Frost, Bathory, King Diamond and Death Angel. - From Wiki Everyone’s got a Rock N Roll story to tell, so tell us yours @growinuprock.com Like us and leave us a review on our FaceBook page - @growinuprock or Podchaser Follow us on Twitter - @growinuprock Subscribe to our Podcast at the platform of your choice and leave us a review Support Music / Artist / and Your Favorite Podcast You can help out the Podcast by doing all of your shopping at Amazon using our link below. Tesla’s Frank Hannon – EP092
EEpisode Description: Steven speaks with Tesla guitarist Frank Hannon about some of his earliest musical memories and the band's newest album release "Shock." We go album-by-album to discuss what Frank's thoughts were at the time of recording. Because we are such huge Tesla fans, as an added bonus we thought why not throw in our top 5 Tesla tunes to rock along the way. What's The Story: Tesla is an American rock band formed in Sacramento, California in late 1981 by bassist Brian Wheat and guitarist Frank Hannon as Earthshaker, and later City Kidd. Lead vocalist Jeff Keith, drummer Troy Luccketta, and guitarist Tommy Skeoch joined them by 1984. By 1986, the band had changed from its glam-derived sound to a 'rootsier' direction under a new name: "Tesla." The band disbanded in 1996 with members devoting themselves to solo projects before re-forming in 2000. Tommy Skeoch departed the band in 2006 and was replaced by Dave Rude. Tesla have sold 14 million albums in the United States. I heard the first single "Modern Day Cowboy from the band's debut album upon its release and was hooked. When I saw the band in a small club in Atlanta on that very first tour for the debut album, I loved everything about the bands no-frills approach to rock n roll and I never looked back. Over the years, I have seen the band countless times and purchased all the band's releases of original material. This band is rock n roll done right; from its heavy driven rockers to its meaningful ballads. Love This Band!! Motley Crue Top 5 With “The Dirt” Movie Review – EP091
EEpisode Description: This week, we pick our Top 5 Motley Crue songs. Plus you'll hear our opinions and review of "The Dirt," a Netflix movie release of Motley Crue's biography. What's The Story?? By now all of the Rock n Roll faithfuls have carved out time to check out "The Dirt" on Netflix. If you haven't, what are you waiting for? On the heels of the successful Queen biopic "Bohemian Rhapsody," and with the Elton John movie "Rocketman" coming out soon, Motley Crue finally saw their book "The Dirt" turned into a Netflix movie. We checked out the film and render our verdict, as well as spin our favorite Motley tunes. I first got into Motley Crue after a friend from California gave me a demo cassette marked "Motley Crue Leathür Records." I remember first hearing "Livewire" and thinking the music kicks ass. I thought the singer had a weird but cool voice. As time went on and "Shout At The Devil" was released, I became a huge fan. In December of '85, I worked for a local stage crew and assisted Tommy Lee's drum tech in setting up Tommy's kit for the night's show. I met Tommy that night, and several times again at later dates, and he was always cool with me. XYZ’s Terry Ilous and Patt Fontaine – EP090
EEpisode Description: We talk with XYZ's founders Terry Ilous and Patt Fontaine about their history and the recent Monsters Of Rock Cruise, as well as what's coming up for the band. Since we love XYZ, we decide to do a quick top 3 showcasing some of our favorite tunes from the band's catalog. What's The Story? XYZ came together in Lyon (France) where bassist Patt Fontaine and vocalist Terry Ilous were born and grew up. The band migrated to Los Angeles in 1986. XYZ started off as the unofficial house band of "The Whisky A Go Go". The original members were Terry Ilous (vocals), Bobby Pieper (guitars), Patt Fontaine (bass) and Joey Pafumi (drums). A tour of the US with Enuff Z'Nuff and Alice Cooper followed the success of their 1989 Enigma-released debut album, and they were signed by major label Capitol for their second. - Source Wikipedia The Band's History XYZ played clubs throughout the mid 1980's and first got a record deal in 1989 with Don Dokken as their producer. Ilous and Fontaine then recruited Mark Diglio (guitars) and Paul Monroe (drums) to replace the departing Pieper and Pafumi, to record their debut album. Terry Ilous's vocal style on the band's first album was very similar to Dokken's. The album contained the hits "Inside Out" and "What Keeps Me Loving You." Videos for both songs received reasonable airplay and the album reached No. 99 on the Billboard charts. A third single from the album, "Maggy," was used in the 1990 Dolph LundgrenmovieI Come in Peace. The next album, Hungry, released in 1991, failed to chart, but I loved it. Diglio and Monroe left the band and were replaced by Tony Burnett and Joey Shapiro, respectively. After the next tour was finished, band members went separate ways once again. XYZ reunited in 2002 with the lineup of Ilous, Fontaine, Tony Marcus, and Shapiro, and still perform to the present day. - Source Wikipedia Growin' Up Rock Podcast Everyone’s got a Rock N Roll story to tell, so tell us yours @growinuprock.com Like us and leave us a review on our FaceBook page - @growinuprock or Podchaser Follow us on Twitter - @growinuprock Subscribe to our Podcast at the platform of your choice and leave us a review Support Music / Artist / and Your Favorite Podcast You can help out the Podcast by doing all of your shopping at Amazon using our link below. This Ain’t No Disco ’96 – EP088
EEpisode Description In this episode, it's time for another installment of "This Ain't No Disco". We discuss and play hard rock and metal music released in 1996. What's It All About: This ain't no disco '96, but for sure it's a change in the landscape of Rock n Roll. It's time for another installment of This Ain't No Disco, and this time we head back to 1996 and we find that the hard rock and metal we loved so much in the late 80's and early 90's was vastly changing and becoming industrialized and very different from what we grew up loving. One thing is for sure, no matter how the guitar strap is hung you can always find a good dose of rock n roll if you know where to look for it and believe me, 1996 you had to look under all sorts of rocks to find it. David Frangioni – Midiot Of Success – EP087
EEpisode Description In this episode, Growin' Up Rock talks with producer, engineer, and technologist David Frangioni. David's early experience with MIDI technology would establish his reputation as the go-to guy for setting up home studio recording. David became so much of an authority on MIDI setups, Aerosmith's Joey Kramer gave David the title of "Midiot" along with the hat to go with it. David's worked with countless rock artists including Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne, Elton John, Styx, and KISS. Bands you will hear on this episode include Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin. Who is David Frangioni? David Frangioni’s musical aspirations started when he began playing the drums at just two years old. Around the same time, he lost an eye to cancer. He continued drumming, realizing music was his passion, a passion that extended later to music technologies. David was one of the pioneers behind MIDI technology. He parlayed that experience into a gig serving as Aerosmith’s in-house engineer/technologist from 1989 to 2002 and continues to work with them. He's worked as a producer, engineer, and technologist for a long list of iconic rock artists including the Stones, Ringo Starr, Elton John, Sting, Journey, Styx, and more. A successful entrepreneur, David is the founder of Audio One, one of the most successful and awarded Audio/Video firms in the United States. Ty Tabor From King’s X – BONUS
EEpisode Description We catch up with guitarist Ty Tabor from King's X to discuss the 2019 Monsters Of Rock Cruise and some of his personal Growin' Up Rock story. We talk about how the band decides on a set list, the possibilities of a new King's X record, and what he remembers about the Woodstock 2 festival that put them in front of 350 thousand people. A Brief Band Overview King's X is a band that was formed in the mid 80s that garnered a ton of critical acclaim from the critics and the bands peers. They were a great mixture of hard rock, melody, harmonies, funk, R&B, and soul. Yep - They had a lot to offer. Maybe some people did not know how to take them and maybe the record companies did not know how to market them, but for whatever reason they never achieved some of the massive success their peers received in the 80s. The band is still going strong and doing better than ever before, and I absolutely love and respect them. Check out our conversation with guitarist, singer, songwriter Ty Tabor. Ep 84Fun With Lord Tracy's Terry Glaze - EP084
EWe have done a lot of interviews at this stage of the podcast. As far as I can remember, nothing matches the fun Sonny and I had with Lord Tracy's frontman Terry Glaze on a Friday night sitting around the computer. Terry is a charismatic and funny dude that we loved hanging out with on Skype. We happen to love his music and we think you'll enjoy this episode. The term “desert island album” comes up often when folks who love music are conversing. If music is your main hobby or passion you probably can name 5 pretty easily. Many people go with, “Led Zeppelin IV”, “Appetite for Destruction”, “Kiss-Destroyer”, “Cheap Trick-at Budokan”, “Beatles-The White Album”, “Back in Black”….for my partner in crime STEVEN MICHAEL it’s “Van Halen 1”…. well, all the regular listeners know that I’m a bit off the beaten path on stuff like this…and although all the albums I just mentioned are incredible….one of my personal desert island albums is Lord Tracy’s "Deaf Gods of Babylon" released in 1989. - Sonny Pooni Terry Glaze A Brief Overview In the early 80's Singer / Guitarist Terry Glaze formed a friendship with fellow high schooler and musician Vincent Paul Abbott, and his kid brother Darrell Abbott, better known as Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darrell of Pantera. The 3 shared a love of hard rock and metal music and in the coming years would put together the early version of Pantera which put out 3 albums of spandex ladened hard rock and metal music. I loved "Projects In The Jungle". Terry Glaze would eventually leave the band and Phil Anselmo would replace Terry as the singer of Pantera. Pantera would go on to become the Heavy Metal Juggernaut that most of the world is familiar with today. Terry would go to join the band that became Lord Tracy which to the majority of the world would be unknown, but to Steven and Sonny would be a "hidden gem" . The band would put out "Deaf Gods Of Babylon" in 1989 an album of hard rock awesomeness and firmly planted as a "Growin' Up Rock" album of their youth. Episode Description We talk to Terry about the early days of Pantera and go track by track through the Deaf Gods Of Babylon album, exchanging a bevy of stories and just genuine great funny conversation. Even if you are unfamiliar with Terry Glaze, Lord Tracy, or Deaf Gods Of Babylon, do yourself a favor and check out this episode. Fun times with Terry Glaze on a Friday night. Livin’ The Life: Miljenko Matijevic of Steelheart – EP082
EIn this episode we are livin' the life with Miljenko Matijevic of Steelheart. We catch up with Steelheart's main man Miljenko to talk about his career, the new live album, and what Steelheart fans can expect in 2019. In 1990 when Steelheart finally got their shot to hit the rock scene, the band embodied everything you would want from a band in that era. They had the look, catchy songs, emotional ballads, screeching guitars, energetic live shows, and a singer named Miljenko Matijevic with a multi-octave range that would make your head spin. Through the journey, Steelheart ended up with a varied history. The band had a couple of hit songs of off 2 amazing albums and then quickly fell off the face of the earth after a fluke stage accident. Miljenko rebuilt the band for a stint in 1996, was involved in the movie Rock Star (playing the voice of Marky Mark Wahlberg) in 2001 and then returned to the rock scene for good in 2006. In 2010, Miljenko even did a stint being the lead singer for The Doors. After releasing the acclaimed Through Worlds of Stardust in 2017, Steelheart is back with a live CD/DVD called Rock ‘n Milan. Miljenko Matijevic tells his Growin’ Up Rock story by sharing his humble beginnings, move to America, his start in music, influences, how Steelheart became a MTV smash, handling adversity of the music business, coming back into the scene through movies/TV, success that being a hit in Asia brought and what the future has yet to offer. Miljenko was very transparent and passionate throughout the conversation. You will enjoy the conversation but to truly appreciate everything that Steelheart has to offer, we encourage you to see them live. The experience is energetic and the musicianship is impressive. Under The Influence Of Van Halen – EP079
EIn this episode it's all about the countless number of rock bands under the influence of the mighty Van Halen. In The 80s there was no rock band bigger than the mighty Van Halen. The guitar playing of Eddie Van Halen and the ringmaster antics of David Lee Roth had a lasting effect on every rock band coming up in the 80s and beyond. Given the impression Van Halen made on so many bands we loved back in the 80s and still love today, we thought it fitting to discuss a few different hard rock bands and artist that may have been influenced by Van Halen either in their playing, their look, or their music. See if you agree, the bands we play in this episode may have borrowed a trick or two from the mighty Van Halen. Marc Ferrari – RnR Business Animal – EP078
EMarc Ferrari is a RnR business animal. Known for being the lead guitar player in Keel and Cold Sweat, Marc has played to thousands of Rock n Roll animals around the world. Marc has done the whole Rockstar thing, but that is just a small stop in his musical journey through life. Some of Marc's career highlights include, writing songs for the 96 Summer Olympic Games, writing and releasing 2 solo records, playing guitar for Crucial Taunt, a fictional band in a couple of the most iconic movies from the 90s Wayne's World. Oh and did we forget to mention that Marc is also a writer. Marc has written two books, a music business book called "Rock Star 101" and a children's book called "Don't Dilly Dally Silly Sally". All of these accomplishments, and they still are probably not his most financially or intellectually biggest success. When Marc's musical career was starting to decline in the early 90s when the fans of hard rock and metal started to turn to grunge, Marc started Mastersource, a music publishing company to license music to TV and movies. He grew that company at the right time and later sold it to Universal Music Publishing. He's an entrepreneur, investor, musician, writer, producer, and in all of that he still found the time to work on a re-release of the cult hard rock record "Break Out", from his band Cold Sweat. We caught up with Marc and discussed some of his days with Keel and some of his many accomplishments, along with the release and re-master of Cold Sweat's one and only record "Break Out" Everyone’s got a Rock N Roll story to tell, so tell us yours @growinuprock.com Like us and leave us a review on our FaceBook page - @growinuprock or Podchaser Follow us on Twitter - @growinuprock Subscribe to our Podcast at the platform of your choice and leave us a review Support Music / Artist / and this Podcast You can help out the Podcast by doing all of your shopping at Amazon using our link below. EWhat the Funk is going on around the Growin' Up Rock Podcast? In this episode of the podcast, Steven and Sonny get funky while keeping that guitar cranked to 11. They explore a funk rock explosion that seemed to happen at the tail end of the 80s and into the early 90s. Discovering and discussing music by Infectious Grooves, King Of The Hill, Skin, Maggie's Dream, Extreme, Trapeze, Lenny Kravitz, TM Stevens, White Trash, and of course Kiss. Matt Jaffe-California’s Golden Rocker – BONUS
EMatt Jaffe is a singer-songwriter from San Francisco. Relatively unknown in the rest of the United States, this California rocker cut his teeth on open mics around the Bay Area. Matt started pursuing music more seriously when Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads) offered to produce his first record. From his earliest memories of growing up playing classic violin at 5 years old, to playing ANY gig that he was offered regardless of venue size, Matt shares stories about his young career. And he describes what it took to release his third album of original material, The Spirit Catches You. Matt Jaffe was great to speak with and very forthcoming about the music business and how his career is progressing. Matt is an intelligent young man who we believe will have a long, fruitful career. His music has been described as “eclectic, completely unexpected, and undeniably catchy – an effervescent marriage of punk-rock hooks and funky, rockabilly melodies.” Please give Matt Jaffe a listen. When We Were Young with Dan Call- EP074

We talk about our early days of rock and roll in Atlanta in the late 80's, when we first met, and some of the many great musicians that came out of Atlanta while we were playing out. We get into Dan's thirty-plus years in the music business as a musician, songwriter, and singer. Dan's hit the charts with his band The Villains, and written and recorded with a variety of amazing artists including a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. We talk KISS, Van Halen, and what Dan has going on these days, including his first solo EP and the new single getting multiple streams on Spotify called "Wish I Was Gay." Monte Pittman – Living Between The Spaces – BONUS
EMonte Pittman for “Better or Worse,” is living “Between The Spaces,” of music by releasing two albums at the same time. The longtime Madonna guitarist and former Prong guitar player has ties to the Pop world, but remains very much rooted in Hard Rock and Metal. Steve Michael caught up with Monte when he rolled through town opening up for former Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach. Monte was on the tour trail promoting his two, that’s right I said two, album releases which hit the market on the same day in August. With the help of Brian Slagel and Metal Blade records, this ridiculously talented musician released a full blown electric album “Between The Spaces” and a completely acoustic record “Better Or Worse.” We shoot the shit about growing up in towns where music was not plentiful, and how he first met up with pop icon Madonna. We get into the recording of his latest albums, as well as how he feels about the flow of an album and live show. I caught Monte’s set which was a high energy wall of bombastic sound that almost seems impossible for three people to produce. Making an extremely conscious effort to ensure his live set flowed, he ran through tunes from not only his latest two releases but also some songs from his first two releases, “Inverted Grasp Of Balance” and “Power Of Three.” Monte’s music often is like a buzz saw cutting down trees with its ferocity, but it still maintains melody and song structure that is easy to follow and, most importantly for me, lyrics that I can understand. In other words, no “Cookie Monster” vocals here. Rowan Robertson Interview – EP073
EOn this episode of Growin' Up Rock, we interview ex-Dio and current DC4 guitarist Rowan Robertson. Rowan Robertson was seventeen when he was chosen by Ronnie James Dio to replace friend of the show Craig Goldy to be part of a new band line up for the recording of "Lock Up The Wolves." We talk to Rowan about his time with Dio, and the unlikely pairing of him and Billy Ray Cyrus. We discuss the Vegas show Raiding the Rock Vault, which he performs in nightly, and his newest project, DC4 with the Duncan Brothers. Queen Top 5 With Bohemian Rhapsody Movie Review – EP072
EIn this Growin' Up Rock episode, we give our review of the new Queen movie “Bohemian Rhapsody.” We enlist the help of fellow podcaster, Queen fan, and host of the Damn Good Movie Memories podcast, Brian Davis to come along for the ride as we doubledown to make it a Top 5 Queen songs episode too. When you talk about influential classic rock bands of the 70's and 80's, you would be hard pressed not to mention one of the greatest of all time, Queen. A completely ground-breaking rock band, they had songwriting talent all around, plus an iconic singer in Freddie Mercury and an amazing guitar player in Brian May. Queen broke all boundaries of what a rock band should look and sound like. Influencing bands like Guns and Roses, Metallica, Extreme and many others along the way. There are so many different textures and moods to Queen’s music, it’s almost doing a disservice to them to lump the songs under one umbrella of Rock n Roll, but at the heart of their music beats a well-oiled Rock n Roll machine. Kick back, enjoy our movie review and listen as we talk about some of our favorite Queen tunes and pick a few deeper tracks to play that you may or may not be that familiar with. Crank It Up – Have You Ever Heard? – EP071
ETonight we crank it up and ask the question, have you ever heard of these guys? We crank up the volume to music from Lynam, Million Dollar Reload, Gary Schutt, Firewind, and Zan Clan. The Crank It Up Spotlight, is a regular segment we cover in almost every episode, but tonight we are dedicating the entire episode, because we want to share some hard rock and metal bands you most likely are not that familiar with, and if you are, you rock, that’s awesome!! In an added bonus, I attended an LA Guns concert, and sat down with the opening act Lynam, who happens to be one of the bands we think enough people just aren't aware of, so you will get the interview I recorded outside the venue at the end of the night with the guys in Lynam. Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame – Who’s In Who’s Out? – EP070
EThe Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame invokes a lot of discussion among the hard rock and metal community. Should we have our own Hard Rock and Metal Hall Of Fame, and if so, who's in and who's out? Since its existence, the Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame has come with it’s share of controversy, whether people are arguing about who’s in and who’s out, or bands arguing about who is coming and who is performing together. We believe in rock n roll and music in general, but we have thoughts about the current state of affairs at the RnR HOF and some ideas that will spawn a much better representation for the hard rock and metal community. Who gets to decide what falls under the umbrella of Rock n Roll? We ask this question because to us, the definition of RnR, Rap, R&B, Blues, Pop, and Punk is certainly blurred at best. In our opinion it appears rock n roll has become more of an all encompassing description of music, instead of a particular genre of music as it once was. Jump in on this conversation and share your thoughts and views with us over at our Facebook page, we would love to hear from you, who’s in and who’s out on your Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame Ballot. Top 5 Kix With Steve Whiteman – EP069
EWe love Kix, so we pick our Top 5 Kix tunes to share. We also love Kix Lead Singer Steve Whiteman and when we had the opportunity to catch up with Steve to discuss the 30th anniversary of the Kix classic album Blow My Fuse we jumped on it. Kix are for kids, but Kix Rock n Roll is for everyone whose ever cranked up the car stereo to 11 and rolled down the windows while rolling down the highway on a sunny day. It was tough to pick our top 5 Kix tunes, but like all other top 5 episodes we ever decide to do, we take the coward way out and commit to our top 5 at that particular moment, because damn, we love Kix and our favorites change at any given moment. Thin Line Between Love & Hate – EP068
EIt’s a thin line between love and hate, and nowhere is it more apparent than in rock n roll, so we got to stop the hate and start the love. This week we get back to basics and have fun with a themed episode that is loaded with some great music by Firehouse, Halford, Tyketto, Megadeth, House Of Lords, WASP, Saraya, and of course Kiss. The theme this week is all about song titles with Love or Hate in the title and in some cases both Love and Hate. Craig Goldy Is A Dream Child – EP067
ECraig Goldy has a very interesting rock n roll story to tell. The former Dio guitar player took time out from his new band Dream Child to discuss his friendship with Ronnie James Dio, his earlier work with Guiffria, and Rough Cutt, and the emotions he feels while paying tribute to Ronnie James Dio performing with the Dio Disciples. From his earliest memories of growing up in a not so ideal home environment, to living out of his car on the streets, Craig shares stories about his auditions for Rough Cutt, touring with Guiffria and meeting his guitar hero Ritchie Blackmore. Craig Goldy’s new band Dream Child which features guitarists / keyboardist Wayne Findlay (MSG), bassist Rudy Sarzo (Ozzy, Whitesnake, Dio) and drummer Simon Wright (AC/DC, Dio), plus singer Diego Valdez just released their debut on Frontiers Records “Until Death Do We Meet Again” is an outstanding mixture of classic Rainbow, Deep Purple, and Dio Influenced rock n roll for your ears. We highly recommend you pick up a copy right here Craig Goldy was great to speak with and very forthcoming about his time with Guiffria and Dio and in our opinion was way more accommodating than most musician, and we appreciated his time. It truly was like hanging out and catching up with a long lost friend. We wish Craig all the luck in the world for his future projects. Cinderella Top 5 – EP066
EThis week Sonny and I scream “SHAKE ME” at the top of our lungs all night as we both pick our Top 5 Cinderella songs. We barely avoid an all-out brawl on mic when we both claim a song as our favorite, deciding in the end to let technology pick the true winner of the favorite song sweepstakes. I remember seeing Cinderella in the 90's, long after their “heyday.” With rock considered passe at the time, I was psyched to be able to see a band I dug in a small club at an affordable price. Cinderella blew the roof off the place that night, and I remember thinking, "Here is a rock band that, in an arena or small club, delivers kick-ass music to the roar of a crowd" and I have never forgotten that fact. Sonny and I both decided we have somewhat of a love/hate relationship with this band, but both of us agree it's more love than hate. There are certainly more than enough killer songs to go around and make it a very tough task to decide which are our Top 5 Cinderella songs at the moment we happened to record this episode of the Growin’ Up Rock Podcast. Eclipse – Rock’s Complete Package – EP065
EEclipse is Rock's complete package. Growin' Up Rock was lucky enough to catch up with the Swedish band in Atlanta to learn what's brought them here and what's in store for the future. Eclipse has released three albums that I absolutely love on Frontiers Records: Bleed and Scream (2012), Armageddonize (2015), and Monumentum (2017). On a rare trip to the US for an appearance at PowerProg USA, a progressive power metal festival, singer Erik Mårtensson, guitarist Magnus Henriksson, and drummer Philip Crusner of Sweden's Eclipse were kind enough to share some of their earliest influences, how they approach writing for different projects they are involved with, and their philosophy on recording to create these sonically awesome Eclipse records. It has occurred to us that Sweden must be putting something in the water, because there are a ton of killer hard rock and metal bands coming out of there these days. As you will hear from our conversation, it may just be the fact that all those kids whose parents were deep into hard rock and metal are finally coming of age. With incredible melodies, screaming guitars, great vocals and huge choruses tailor made for an arena or stadium, you're in for a treat because Eclipse is the total rock n roll package. Who’s The New Guy – EP061
EWho's the new guy in the band? In this episode, we take a look at replacement players who have impacted the bands they joined in an awesome way. Hey, I went to my job today and some new guy was there doing it. Who's the new guy? WTF? Have I been fired? Oh wait, I left because quite frankly I can't stand the rest of the guys in this band. With the music industry changing rapidly each and every day, free agency is at an all-time high. One way musicians make a living nowadays is to play in 50 bands at the same time and stay out there on the road. Musicians switch bands like a pack of 8 year-olds playing musical chairs at the popular kid's birthday party. So in today’s episode, Sonny and I talk about just a few of our favorite replacement players who have contributed some good work with bands we love. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind we are going to make some controversial statements in this episode, but it's only our preferences and opinions and we encourage you to voice yours. Under Covers Of The Night – EP060
EUnder Covers of the Night is an episode about playing and discussing some very cool rock cover songs that Sonny and I discovered. When Sonny and I started to discuss doing a covers episode recently, our research quickly turned up a massive number of cover songs out there in the universe. Some awesome, and some complete crap. Some extremely close to the original, and some completely unrecognizable. You have cover songs that are part of tribute albums to a designated band or artist. You have cover songs that were created for a sound track to a movie or TV show. At the end of the day, we decided that we were going to have to do more episodes in the future about cover songs. But for now, we had a load of fun digging for cover gems and even though we don’t always agree on what is good and what is bad, we do agree we love to Rock n Roll. This Ain’t No Disco ’90 – EP059
EIt's time for another installment of “This Ain’t No Disco” on Growin’ Up Rock. In an episode from the Growin' Up Rock Vaults. (yes we recorded this one last year - see if you can tell) This ain't no disco, but it sure as hell is rock n roll at its finest. On this episode we jump in our “Back To The Future” time traveling Delorean and go back to 1990, and what another kick ass year it was for hard rock and metal releases. It was getting close to the end for the hard rock / glam rock pretty boy music scene, that we came to know and love and getting close to the dawning of what would come to be known as the Grunge Rock era. We love the opportunity to focus on a year, and play whatever we feel like playing at the time we jump on our mics.We share a few laughs, talk about the changing tides in music and pick out a handful of great music to turn it up and take you back to 1990. EWe're celebrating our Fabulous First. Happy Anniversary Growin' Up Rock Listeners!! Remember the first time you heard one of your all-time favorite bands? How about the first time you saw them in concert? Growin' Up Rock is turning one, so we have an epic first year celebration in store for you all. Sonny and I reflect back on our first year of episodes, while discussing our fabulous first associated with some of our favorite bands we grew up loving in high school. Sonny and I have a ton of bands that meant so much to us growing up around rock n roll, while going to high school. There were far more bands than there was enough time in this episode to discuss all of them, but we touch on 5 of them that were certainly right there in the mix. I wasted more time sitting in class and drawing these bands logos on all my folders instead of actually studying and I don't regret a single minute. Maybe the first time you heard your favorite bands, was not actually the first album from that artist, but more the middle of the catalog based on your age. If that's the case for you, what was that bands sound like on that first release? Have they changed? Did they grow into more of a band you love, or change so much they became something less listenable for you? In a less likely case, you may actually love everything that artist ever released. Sonny and I talk about this and so much more and we are proud as hell to take all the Growin' Up Rock listeners with us for this fabulous first Anniversary, Birthday, whatever the hell you want to call it episode. Dokken Top 5 At This Minute – EP057
EIt’s been a long time coming but we are finally doing a Dokken Top 5 List. On this episode we spin the Dial O’ Destiny and pick our top 5 favorite Dokken tunes. At least at this minute. Sonny and I are such huge Dokken fans, we found it impossible to pick just 5 of our favorite Dokken songs, so for the sake of time, as in we don’t have enough, we decided to capture a moment in time and record our favorites at this minute. Rockin' with Dokken is definitely a Growing Up Rock pasttime for Hollywood and me, and picking our favorite songs is like asking “Do you want cheese and bacon on that burger”? - Answer - UMMMMM - YES and YES!!! We also talk about our recent adventures in concert going, and how we think the economics of our universe will vastly improve the human and alien relationships of the future. OK - so I made that last part up, just wanted to see if you actually read this shit. Dokken is an American metal band formed in 1979. It split up in 1989 and reformed four years later. The band had three charting singles ("Alone Again", "In My Dreams" and "Burning Like a Flame") and have sold more than 10 million albums worldwide.
