In Genesis 2, we get a close look at the events that occurred in the Garden of Eden. We get to focus on the relationship between God and man. Pastor Greg Laurie shares valuable points from this book today. Notes: Genesis 2/Genesis 3 Elohim is the appropriate word to portray God as the Majestic Creator. Yahweh is the personal name God uses when dealing with humanity. Read: Genesis 2:7–9 God created man and breathed life into him. The word, “breathed,” is warmly personal. Genesis 2:7 Eden means, “delight.” God placed man in a real place called, Eden. Eden was hand-made by God Himself, untouched by sin and death, perfect. Adam was tasked with naming the animals. The word, “helper,” does not imply inferiority; it’s the same term God uses to describe Himself as a helper to His people. God establishes the family and the home: A man and a woman. To have a successful marriage, you must both leave other relationships. Genesis 2:24 To have a successful marriage, the couple must cleave together. Cleave means, “to glue, to cling.” Marriage is a picture of Christ and the church! 1 Corinthians 7:32–33 Our greatest needs are not fulfilled in marriage but in Jesus! Genesis 1:1 Since God created the heavens and the Earth, He is more than adequate to meet your needs. Genesis is the ground floor and foundation of the entire Bible. Without it, the rest of the Bible would be incomprehensible. Read: Genesis 1:1–10 God is triune, meaning, three-in-one—eternally existing in three persons. Genesis 3:22; Genesis 11:6 The Trinity consists of three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God is the Creator of all things! Created (Bara) means, “to create something out of nothing.” Only God can create; that is, call into existence that which had no existence. God has always existed. He is self-existent. He has existed from the beginning. Revelation 1:8 God created all things in six days! Genesis gives a broad-stroked painting of creation, not a photograph. The focus of Genesis is not to show us “how the heavens go,” but “how to go to Heaven.” I don’t believe in the Bible because Science proves it true; I believe in the science that the Bible proves is true! God created mankind in His image. Read: Genesis 1:26–28 After each thing God created, He said, “It is good.” When God created man, He said, “It is very good.” Genesis 1:31 Read: Genesis 2:1–3 God did not rest because He was tired; He rested because He was done! The word rest in Hebrew is Shabath and it means, “cease.” “Cast all your care on Him, for He cares for you!” 1 Peter 5:7 The God who created you will bear it for you. “If you will come to Him, He will turn your night into day with a word. He will reorder your broken life with a word. He will bring form out of chaos with a word. The faithfulness of God and our response of faith to His calling. Jesus promised to the church: “The gates of Hell shall not prevail against us.” God has remained faithful to lead, protect, and guide us each step of the way. 2 Thessalonians 3:3 “The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places. I have a beautiful inheritance.” Psalm 16:6 “Now, faith is the substance of things hoped for, evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1 Faith is not just intellectual ascent; it is also action. Faith is belief plus action. Faith is a living, restless thing; it cannot be inoperative. What saves is faith alone, but the faith that saves is never alone. How does faith come? By listening, studying, and immersing yourself with the Word of God. Romans 10:17 Theology without apology. Worshiping Evangelizing Learning Loving Faith can make the difference between something happening and not happening. Faith sees what could be; a believer sees invisible things. Read: Matthew 14:28–31 Faith is the refusal to panic, and it has no back door. When you have a lapse of faith, call out to Jesus! Matthew 14:30–31 “Little faith” is one word in the Greek. With Peter’s eyes back on Jesus, “little faith” walked back to the boat. Matthew 14:32 We should never believe our doubts and doubt our beliefs. We should believe our beliefs and doubt our doubts. “Your faithfulness continues from generation to generation.” Psalm 119:90 Teach God’s Word faithfully. Invite people to come to Christ. We’ll also see what more we can learn from Zechariah, Elizabeth, and John the Baptist. Notes: Luke 1 Malachi 4:2 We live by time; God lives outside of time. God recognizes human time, but He is not bound by it. God sees the big picture, but we see the small picture. God has His timing and makes everything beautiful in His time. Ecclesiastes 3:11 No one wants your loved ones to come to Jesus more than Jesus does! God was not only promising the Messiah, He also spoke of a forerunner. Malachi 3:1 The forerunner would be known as John the Baptist. From Genesis to Revelation, we have one complete Revelation of God. From the Old Testament to the New Testament, He is the same. Jonah 4:2 Read: Luke 1:11–17 Continually bring your burdens to the Lord in prayer! Zechariah means, “God remembers.” Elizabeth means, “My God is an oath.” God remembers us and keeps His promises! Philippians 1:6 Zechariah was a humble man. “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” James 4:6 God is still looking for humble people to use for His glory. 2 Chronicles 16:9 We represent God to a lost world, and we intercede for those in need to God in prayer. 1 Peter 2:9 Zechariah was a faithful man. God often speaks to His people when they are busy doing their daily tasks. Zechariah and Elizabeth were Godly and blameless people. Luke 1:6 Blameless does not mean they were sinless; it means they obeyed God. God was preparing them both for this day, and now the reward for their faithfulness has come! Luke 1:13 His prayer on earth was heard in Heaven! God promises that if we, as His people, call out to Him, He will hear and answer! Psalm 34:15 God urges us to call out to Him! Jeremiah 33:3 God’s delays are not necessarily His denials. God hears and stores our prayers. Not one is wasted. Every prayer is answered: Yes, no, and wait. Zechariah was human and flawed just like us! Luke 1:18–19 Read: Luke 1:21–22 John was the direct forerunner of the Messiah! His job was to clear the way, prepare the way, and get out of the way.
