Pastor Greg Laurie begins our new "Psalms of David" series with a message focused on the choices we have in life, including the choice to follow God. Notes: Matt. 7:24-29/ Ps.1 Choices matter, because we make our choices, and our choices make us! We are not the only ones who make choices; God makes choices, too! There are over 59 references to David in the New Testament, yet he was far from perfect. He wasn’t only a shepherd, warrior, and king, but also, an adulterer, murderer, and abysmal failure. In battle, David was fearless. In wisdom, in ruling, he was without peer. “My heart is fixed, my heart is fixed, O Lord.”Psalm 57:7 The book of Psalms gives real insight into David’s heart; it shows his courage, his weakness, his fears, and prayers. Psalms is a collection of 150 Hebrew poems, songs, and prayers of Israel’s history. The first Psalm gives a contrast, as we see the difference between right and wrong choices. “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” ¾Robert Frost Read: Matthew 7:24–29 We make our choices, and then our choices make us. The final test of what our foundation is will come in times of testing and hardship in life. We, as Christians, can vote them out and vote others in.Proverbs 29:2 “Happy is the nation whose God is the Lord.”Psalm 33:12 The happy person thinks the right way.Psalm 1:2 “Man must have some delight, some supreme pleasure.His heart was never meant to be a vacuum. Spurgeon In Eastern meditation, the goal is to empty the mind.In biblical meditation, the goal is to fill the mind. You must read, study, memorize, and meditate on God’s Word. There is an art to listening. If in conversation you look at a person, respond! God told Habakkuk to write down the vision He gave to him.Habakkuk 2 The happy person is rooted the right way.Psalm 1:3 A godly person, a happy person, stays in the Word of God every day. As we abide in Christ, we bring forth spiritual fruit.Matthew 7:17 Our change in conduct and character is described as spiritual fruit.Galatians 5:22 “By their fruit shall you know them.”Matthew 7:16 Worshipping God is spiritual fruit.Hebrews 13:15 Winning others to Christ and helping them grow spiritually is fruit. Do you struggle with worry and anxiety? Pastor Greg Laurie covers what Jesus has to say on the topic as we finish our series, "Sermon on the Mount." Notes: Matthew 6 “The more we use social media, the less happy we seem to be.” —Alice G. Walton, Senior Editor, Forbes What do people worry about the most? Appearance. When things are good, we worry about when they’ll be bad; and when things are bad, we worry about if they will ever be good again. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus talks about the believer and worry. He tells us why we should not worry and what we should do instead. Read: Matthew 6:25–34 The believer should not worry. “That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life.” Matthew 6:25 In other words, “do not have anxiety about the issues of life.” Worry can be a sin! Because worry is a lack of trust in God. Worry is never of any value; it never helps but always hurts! “Worry is a lot like a rocking chair … always moving, but never getting anywhere!” The problem with worry is it’s the interest paid on trouble before it’s due. “The result of worrying about the future is that you are crippling yourself in the present.”—Dr. Martin Lloyd Jones Worry is a lack of trust. “Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7 The word cast is not the normal word for throwing something; rather, it is a word that signifies a definite act of the will by which we stop worrying about things and let God assume the responsibility for our welfare. If it’s a concern for you, it is also a concern to God! Psalm 139:17 Birds don’t worry. Why should we? Matthew 6:26 Flowers don’t worry. Why should we? Matthew 6:28–29 1 Timothy 4:8–9 Too much emphasis on the physical but neglecting the spiritual. Too much emphasis on the spiritual but neglecting the physical. God takes care of the birds and flowers; He will also take care of you. So, if the greater thing is in His control, leave the lesser to Him as well. Worry does not make life longer; it makes it more miserable. Matthew 6:27 Instead of worry, put God and His Will first in your life. Matthew 6:33 Just as God is concerned about what you will eat and what you will wear, He is also concerned about who you will spend the rest of your life with. Seek first the Kingdom of God! When I put God and His Kingdom first, my life will find its proper balance. Don’t worry, pray! What does your prayer life look like? Pastor Greg Laurie helps us stay on the right track as we examine the way Jesus instructed His disciples to pray. Notes: Matthew 6 Jesus did what the disciples had asked; and in doing so, He was acknowledging that prayer is something that can be learned. The Lord’s prayer shows us how to pray Jesus’ way. But first, Jesus shows us how not to pray. Read: Matthew 6:5–8 Sin knows no boundaries; it afflicts us when we are far from God and follows us to the very throne of Heaven. It is possible to pray with no thought of God Himself. Prayer is not to inform God but, rather, to invite God. The response to the question: “Lord, teach us to pray.” Read: Matthew 6:9–13 We pray to a Father in Heaven who loves us. A Father who loves and misses His children when they go astray. A Father that longs for communication and fellowship with us. God is not just our Father; He is our “abba” or “daddy.” Romans 8:15 We begin our prayers with “our Father.” Then, we are to worship Him and contemplate Him before we offer our petitions. Matthew 6:9 – “Hallowed be Your name.” When we pray, we should always ask for God’s Will to be done. Matthew 6:10 Prayer is not getting my will in Heaven, but it is God’s Will on Earth. 1 John 5:14 Nothing lies outside the reach of prayer except that which lies outside the Will of God. God only answers the requests which He inspires. Prayer is not pulling God to my will, but the aligning of my will to the Will of God. We should pray for God’s Kingdom to come. Matthew 6:10 When we pray, “Thy Kingdom come,” we are praying for God’s rule on Earth. Revelation 11:15 The word come indicates a sudden, instantaneous coming. 2 Peter 3:14 God’s Kingdom is brought to this Earth every time a new soul is brought to Jesus. We should be praying for the salvation of nonbelievers. We should pray a person sees their need for Jesus. We need to bring our personal needs before God. Matthew 6:11 Job 7:17 When you ask someone to give you something, you are acknowledging that they own it. We are completely dependent on God; God is completely independent from us. You will never have a proper relationship to all of your possessions until you understand that everything you have, everything that you need, and everything that you own comes from God. Everything we have, ultimately, comes from God! James 1:17 Deuteronomy 8:18 James 4:2 Romans 8:32 We need to pray for personal forgiveness, and we need to forgive others. Matthew 6:12 Forgiven people should be forgiving people. Matthew 6:12 “Everyone thinks forgiveness is a lovely idea until they have someone to forgive.” —C.S.
