Living Hope: Produces a Holy Life
1 Peter 1:13-16 Is it even possible to live a holy life? - Holy = "set apart" "separate" "different" "dedicated" How can you and I live a holy life? 1. You must prepare your mind for action. v. 13 2. You must keep sober in your spirit. v. 13 3. You must fix your hope completely on the grace of God. v. 13 4. You must live a life of obedience. v. 14 (Don't slip back into your old ways of living) How can you know you are following God's command to "Be holy for I am holy." - By being set apart for God's use in your daily living. - By being separated from you old way of living. Living Hope: The Joy of His Salvation
Key Scripture: 1 Peter 1:10-12 How do you feel when you think of the word "Salvation"? What does it mean to you to have experienced salvation? - Salvation = deliverance, preservation, safety: Saved from something and saved for something. Saved from destruction, damnation, and hell: Saved for glory, eternal life, and heaven. - The Joy of His Salvation was the focus of the Old Testament Prophets study. V. 10-11 - The Joy of His Salvation was the focus of the Holy Spirits revelation. V. 11 - The Joy of His Salvation was the focus of the Disciples preaching. J - Jesus first O - Others next Y - Yourself last - We have inexpressible joy because we have a living hope. V. 3 - We have inexpressible joy because our inheritance is secure in heaven. V. 4 - We have inexpressible joy because we are protected by God's almighty power. V. 5 - We have inexpressible joy because our faith is tested and proven. Living Hope: Our Inheritance in Christ
Key Scripture: 1 Peter 1:3-5 Have you ever received or not received an inheritance? How did it make you feel? - An inheritance is a financial term describing the assets passed down to individuals after someone dies. - Our inheritance is Jesus is imperishable. v.4 - Our inheritance in Jesus is undefiled. v. 4 - Our inheritance in Jesus is unfading. v. 4 - Our inheritance in Jesus is reserved. It is secure. v. 4 - We, as believers, are protected by God's power. We are secure v. 5 John 10:28-29 How does it make you feel knowing your inheritance is secure and you are as well? Experiencing A Living Hope (Easter Sunday)
Text: 1 Peter 1:3 - You must be born again to experience a "living hope." - All believers are given "living hope" through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. - God's definition of living hope is "an eager, confident expectation." It is not wishful thinking. - Our "living hope" is anchored in the past because Jesus rose from the dead. - Our "living hope" continues in the present because Jesus is alive. - Our "living hope" endures throughout the future. Jesus promises eternal life to all who believe. - Unbelievers do not have "living hope." (Ephesians 2:12) (1 Thessalonians 4:13) Which hope are you experiencing in your life right now? Key Scripture: Luke 23:33-43 - Both criminals mocked Jesus at first. (Matt. 27:44) Rulers mocked. v. 35 Soldiers mocked. vs. 36-37 - One criminal was hurling abuse at Jesus. v. 39 - One criminal recognized his sin and the innocence of Jesus. vs. 40-41 - This one criminal believed and received the Lord Jesus Christ. v. 42 - This man was saved by Jesus. v. 43 - The Good News is salvation is totally a free gift from God. - The Good News is we can be forgiven of our sin by God. - The Good News is it is never too late to receive Jesus. - One man died with sin in him and on him. - One man died with sin in him but not on him. - Jesus died with sin on Him but not in Him. Get A Testimony & Give A Testimony
Key Text: Rev. 12:11, John 4:39-42, Acts 4:13 Have you shared your testimony? - What is a testimony? It is a declaration of proof or a profession of faith - It is a public recounting of a religious conversion or experience. - It is a formal written or spoken statement, especially one given in a court of law. - A Biblical Testimony is sharing with someone else about your relationship with God. - How do you get a testimony? You get a testimony by being tested. - Important Truths about Your Testimony: - When God answers your prayer, no matter how big or small, you need to share it. Why? - It is a stewardship issue. - If you don't turn the answer to your prayer into praise, it may very well turn into pride. - Giving your testimony is the way you give God all the glory. - Second Person Testimony is Heresay: John 4:39-42, Acts 4:13 It's not a testimony if you don't share it with others. What Is It That You Treasure?
Key Text: Matthew 6:19-21 - What is treasure? Treasure is anything you value above all else. Your treasure motivates you to action. - Jesus speaks of earthly treasure and it's value. v. 19 - Jesus speaks of eternal treasure and it's value. v. 20 - We store up "treasure in heaven" when we make choices on earth that benefit God's kingdom. - Jesus knows your treasure reveals your values. v. 21 - When Jesus is our treasure, we will commit our resources: our time, talent, and treasure to His kingdom work. What is God's treasure? - God's earthly treasure is His chosen people Israel. How Am I Using My Talent for the Kingdom of God?
Imitators of GOD Talent: How am I using my talent for the kingdom of God? Text: Matthew 25:14-30 - What is a talent? - It is a gift from God. - It is a natural ability such as (music, art, athletic, mechanics or even math) - It improves with practice and time. - It is to be used for the good of others. "What do you have that you did not receive? And if you received it why do you boast as if you had not received it?" 1 Corinthians 4:7 - The Parable of the Talents: Matthew 25:14-30 In this Parable a talent is a very large sum of money. In todays money, a talent of gold would be worth $1,800,000. - Observations to apply from The Parable of the Talents: - We are stewards, not owners. - We are each given a talent according to our ability. - We have a choice to operate out of trust or out of fear. - God rewards good stewardship. - God punishes bad stewardship. Time: Am I using it wisely or wasting it away? Key Scripture: Ephesians 5:1, 15-16 - Paul gives the command: "Be imitators of God, as beloved children." 5:1 Imitator = a follower; a person who copies the behavior or actions of another. To mimic. - Paul gives the command: "Be careful how you walk." 5:15 - Not as unwise men (foolish), but as wise (skilled, expert) - Making the most of your time. 5:16 - Paul gives the reason why: "because the days are evil." - Evil (wicked, bad) (full of labor, hardship, and annoyance) There are Five Areas of how we spend our TIME 1. Spiritual 2. Relational 3. Educational 4. Financial (Occupation) 5. Physical (Health, Recreation)
