S1 Ep 38Optimizing Gut Health for Whole Body Wellness – Episode 38
On this episode, Mark and Dr. Gladden discuss the digestive system and its part in the entire ecosystem of your body. Many people suffer from leaky gut syndrome, a condition where the intestines becoming increasingly permeable and bacteria and other toxins can spread into the body. Also, a number of physical and mental conditions are often linked to excessive inflammation that starts in the digestive tract. They explore some of the symptoms that people can suffer because of failing digestive health, or from eating a diet that causes their GI tract distress. They talk about how to identify and eliminate what foods might be causing problems, as well as what foods and supplements you can add to start healing your digestive tract. Dr. Gladden explains the role of bacteria in our digestive system. Mark and Dr. Gladden open the show discussing some of Mark's health and fitness progress, and they touch on how to safely obtain and use peptides. Next, they invite Dr. Kevin Wacasey onto the show. After a background in emergency room care, Dr. Wacasey opened a direct patient care (also called direct primary care) practice in 2013. He started this in reaction to seeing his patients paying massive amounts for basic care, because of their insurance. They discuss a number of issues related to our "sick care system" that exists in the U.S., calling for an end to the managed care model. They talk about the independent healthcare mindset and how patients need to be educated about what they're actually paying for. As insurance dictates what tests or procedures you can or cannot get, you may be denied the care you really want. Our current insurance system is profit-driven, not outcome-driven or patient focused. To be at our best health and performance, we must take control of our own health care. Special Guest: Dr. Kevin Wacasey Kevin Wacasey studied at the University of Texas at Arlington and fulfilled his residency in Emergency Medicine at Orlando Regional Medical Center. Kevin has held a certification from the American Board of Emergency Medicine since 1999. Dr. Wacasey has published two books focusing on health insurance and healthcare. His first book called The Guide to Buying Health Insurance, and Health Carewas published in 2016 and second called Healthcareonomics – 1,000 Crazy Ways American Health Insurance Controls America's Health Carewas published a year later in 2017. To go along with his two publications, Dr. Wacasey also has a blog and YouTube Channel that he contributes to regularly. Both the blog and YouTube Channel are called "Healthcareonomics". They also discuss how the body performs better when it is challenged by different extremes. Next, they discuss non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, which is an epidemic that is the most common liver disorder in developed countries. In a traditional medical model, this diagnosis is considered irreversible. Mark's father died from this disease, and Mark was also diagnosed with a cirrhotic liver. He was referred to a liver transplant specialist. Dr. Gladden and Mark walk through a number of measures that Mark took, outside of traditional medicine with Gladden's guidance, to improve his condition. S1 Ep 32Breaking Through the Limits You Set for Yourself – Episode 32
At what age were you at your very best physically, mentally and spiritually? Traditional medicine sets the "standard" about your age, deciding what levels indicate health. This means accepting when things start to go wrong rather than intervening medically. Traditional "anti-aging" experts ask how to turn the clock back. A third set considers how we become better than ever at any age. Dr. Gladden and Mark discuss the way aerobic activity and lower stress improves brain function, as well as hormone balance and the introduction of peptides to enhance mental health. Dr. Gladden expands on hormone balance and its function in health and performance. Consider what you're doing to reclaim or exceed your peak. How good could you be?
S1 Ep 31The Body as a Brain – Episode 31
On this episode, Dr. Gladden and Mark talk about how the brain-body connection impacts health. Dr. Gladden believes that people actually need to think of their body asa brain because the neurological system runs throughout the body. The discuss the power of the brain in helping your body heal or possibly holding your body back. If you're not treating the whole body, recovery from an injury or illness may be impeded because the whole system is out of balance. Behaviors and mindset play a major role in health, both in the positive and negative. In the reverse, problems in your body can affect the way your brain works as well. They consider the mindset we need to overcome the sick care system we have, to try and restore ourselves to our peak health. Dr. Gladden suggests things you can do to help retrain your brain, including meditation, transcranial direct stimulation and hypnosis.
S1 Ep 30The Electronics of the Brain – an Interview with Dr. Jeffrey Marksberry – Episode 30
Dr. Jeffrey Marksberry joins Mark and Dr. Gladden on this episode to discuss the electrostimulation device Alpha-Stim, which runs a low microcurrent through the brain or body. In the brain, it simulates endorphins and serotonin to treat anxiety, insomnia and depression. In the body, it treats peripheral pain. The nervous system is 98% electrically induced, and Dr. Marksberry explains how the treatment works for patients. They discuss how this device can help enhance mental function, exploring the possibilities when paired with other treatments for improved human performance. S1 Ep 29Modeling Better Medicine with Technology – an Interview with Dr. V.A. Shiva Ayyadurai – Episode 29
On this episode, Mark and Dr. Gladden invite Dr. V.A. Shiva Ayyadurai to tell his story, from his childhood in India watching his grandmother practice traditional medicine on the weekends to working in the U.S. in medical research and running for U.S. Senate in Massachusetts. Shiva has grown many businesses that focus on technology, with a frequent interest in healthcare. He discusses his various inventions and breakthroughs that stem from his education in the U.S. and the practice of medicine he observed as a child. They discuss how different body types have different needs, including diet and medicine. Your body is a system, and different deficiencies bring your system out of balance. Finding those deficiencies to bring your body back into balance is crucial to health. The current health system is based on wartime crisis management for health, treating one problem quickly, rather than prevention and preemptive medicine for the sake of the whole system. Shiva discusses how the technology he created, CytoSolve®, as an alternative to the very cumbersome and expensive traditional model of drug development. CytoSolve allows for complex models of molecular pathways to be able to test medicines and other compounds mathematically first. About the guest: Dr. V.A. Shiva Ayyadurai, the inventor of email and polymath, holds four degrees from MIT, including his PhD in Biological Engineering. He is a world-renowned systems scientist, Fulbright Scholar, Lemelson-MIT Awards Finalist, First Outstanding Scientist and Technologist of Indian Origin (STIO), Westinghouse Science Talent Honors Award recipient, and was nominated for the U.S. National Medal of Technology and Innovation. On August 30, 1982, the US government recognized Dr. Ayyadurai as the inventor of email by awarding him the first Copyright for "Email" at a time when Copyright was the only way to protect software inventions. His interest in human health began early, when as a child, he observed his grandmother, a village farmer and healer, practice India's oldest system of traditional medicine. This motivated his future study and research in systems biology at MIT, leading to his discovery of Systems Health®, a major breakthrough that provides an integrative framework linking eastern and western medicine. His latest invention CytoSolve®, emerging from his doctoral research at MIT, provides a revolutionary platform for modeling diseases from Cancer to Alzheimer's to discover drugs at a fraction of the time and cost. He is running for US Senate as an independent in the state of Massachusetts on the policies of clean government, real health, real jobs. Visit Shiva's website, https://shiva4senate.com/. S1 Ep 27The Problem of Cell Senescence – Episode 27
On this episode, Dr. Gladden, Mark and Robb discuss the problem of senescent cells in the body. Senescent cells stop dividing, but they don't die off through apoptosis. Rather than making way for new cells, they can become dysfunctional, release toxins and can contribute to aging and disease. Robb shares a study on senolytic drugs, which helps induce the death of senescent cells, showing promise so far in helping mice live longer. They discuss some habits that can help maintain telomere length to prolong the longevity of cells. They also cover some of the treatments that the medical community is exploring to deal with senescent cells. They talk about how stress helps the body stay healthier and that balance in your body and vigilance in healthy habits are needed to promote longevity.
S1 Ep 26Stem Cell Therapy Now – an Interview with Matthew Feshbach – Episode 26
Matthew Feshbach, founder and CEO of Ambrose Cell Therapy, joins the conversation to share information about stem cell research and treatment using stem cells. Feschbach explains the difference between types of stem cells and which are most effective for reparative therapies. They talk about why the body degenerates with age, related to stem cells. Feshbach describes the process and technology his clinic uses to harvest mesenchymal stem cells for use in therapy. They consider some of the regulatory issues involved in stem cell therapy. Feshbach describes some of the amazing results that have been seen in patients who have received the therapy to treat significant health issues. He explains what sort of lifestyle choices can optimize results from this kind of treatment. Also on the podcast, Mark and Dr. Gladden discuss the problem with staying in your comfort zone, both physically and mentally. In contrast, they describe the environments in which we grow and thrive. Special Guest: Matthew (Matt) Feshbach is the Founder and CEO of AMBROSE Cell Therapy. AMBROSE was founded in 2017 with the mission: To help people with chronic degenerative diseases improve symptoms, function and quality of life with adult stem cell therapy. Matt has taken an unconventional path throughout his business career. He did not attend college but instead taught tennis at private homes in Silicon Valley. Through that experience he developed professional and personal relationships with a number of prominent investment managers, who inspired him to study securities analysis and begin investing himself. This led to the co-founding, with his brothers Kurt and Joe, of Feshbach Bros in 1982. Feshbach Bros. managed the first "short-only" hedge fund. Assets under management grew from $20,000 to $1 Billon in 9 years. Matt's investment career, through the ups and downs of the stock market, spanned more than 30 years. In 2009 he and his brother, Joe, began researching adult stem cells and their potential, due to their interest in a publicly traded company. They spoke to researchers from all over the world - Israel to Japan, Holland to Spain, New York to Los Angeles, Chicago to Dallas and so on - to understand the best source of adult stem cells as well as the science, technologies and unmet medical needs they could potentially address. As a result of their research, they came to have a well-informed opinion that fat (adipose) tissue is the most accessible, abundant and potent source of adult stem and regenerative cells. As well, that the mixed population of adipose-derived stem and regenerative cells (ADRCs) could be used to address a broad spectrum of chronic diseases. This has now been validated in the published medical literature. 1 2 3 Along with his brother, Matt founded Okyanos (Oh-key-ah-nos) Cell Therapy in August 2011 in Freeport, Bahamas. The Greek God of Rivers, "Okyanos" symbolizes restoration of blood flow, which is an important mechanism of action of ADRCs. Shortly after helping to create Okyanos, Matt's brother, Joe, sadly died of a cardiac arrest. Joe's death prompted Matt to be even more dedicated his purpose to help patients with chronic disease with their own adult stem cells. In the Bahamas, he drafted the framework for what developed into the Bahamas Stem Cell Research and Therapy Act, while concurrently building and staffing Okyanos. Due to the uncompromising standards set by Matt, Okyanos came to be known as the first cell therapy center of excellence in the world. The passage of House Bill 810, Charlie's Law, in Texas paved the way for Matt to once again set a new standard in cell therapy for complex chronic disease. To be specific, Charlie's Law allows the use of investigational adult stem cell treatments in Texas for patients that have been diagnosed with a terminal illness or severe chronic disease. This is a Right-to-Try Law. The U.S Constitution - Tenth Amendment states - "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people." As such FDA has not taken action against drug companies or providers in the 28 states with medical marijuana laws and the 38 states with laws allowing patients who are terminally ill the right to try experimental drugs without FDA approval (Right to try Laws), respectively. Matthew Feshbach has combined his 3 decades of investment experience with his personal purpose to help others and, for a non-medical person, extraordinary knowledge of the science, technology and protocols of adult stem cell therapy to bring the highest standards of safety, care and potential effectiveness to patients in need. 1 A Nguyen, A et al Stromal vascular fraction: A regenerative reality? S1 Ep 20Peptides as Building Blocks to Robust Longevity – an Interview with Ryan Smith – Episode 20
Peptides are a grouping of 50 or fewer amino acids (more than 50 is a protein). Peptides are natural substances, though those covered in the show are variations on the naturally occurring versions. They can be beneficial in many ways, often amplifying the body's ability to heal itself. They discuss the history of the use of peptides in a medical environment, as well as the future of peptides becoming available commercially in the U.S., with over 7,000 in clinical development currently. Cancer research is one of the leading development areas for peptides (ALRN-6924 is one of the prominent ones studied). Antimicrobial research is also being done to potentially create new antibiotics. There are different methods of delivering peptides to the body. They are not very bioavailable orally and are prone to hydrolysis, so injection is the best for the majority of peptides. They explore some of the benefits of peptides over traditional medications, such as allergic reaction is limited with peptides, and neither the kidneys nor liver have to process them like traditional medications require. They also consider the potential side effects of using peptides. They warn against purchasing peptides from online companies, as many of them are produced overseas in bulk without any regulation, often not containing what they claim. The only safe way to get access to peptides is through a reputable doctor who practices integrative medicine, with access to compounding pharmacies like Tailor Made Compounding. Some of the peptides covered on the show: Human growth hormone (HGH) secretagogues like Ipamorelin, CJC-1295, Sermorelin and Tesamorelin encourage the pituitary gland to increase HGH production. They also explain the significant risks of using human growth hormone therapy directly. GLP-1 and Semaglutide could be used for diabetes treatment. Melanotan 2 stimulates melanocytes to produce melanin, causing a tanned appearance of the skin. Epitalon resets the HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) axis, with a number of potential positive effects on disease states, possibly helping to lengthen or preserve the length of telomeres, increases melatonin for better sleep and more. BPC-157 is orally bioavailable, unlike most peptides, with a variety of reported benefits. This includes helping with neural inflammation, muscle improvement, improved immunity, improved collagen synthesis, increased bone density and accelerated recovery/healing. It is most often used clinically to treat gut and bowel issues and tendon and ligament repair. Thymosin beta-4 is beneficial for soft tissue injury by increasing blood flow to the area, encouraging healing. Thymosin alpha 1 is FDA approved (commercially available as ZADAXIN™ for treatment of viral hepatitis), encouraging increased immune response to some cancers, Lyme disease and sexually transmitted diseases. PT-141 has a benefit for treating some erectile dysfunction and female sexual dysfunction. Follistatin (actually a protein, not a peptide) has the potential to inhibit myostatin, which prevents muscle breakdown. Cerebrolysin is a combination of peptides with potential useful for brain repair in neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and strokes. Selank and Semax are Russian peptides that are nasally bioavailable that have been reported to help with anxiety. MIF-1, ACTH, Dihexa have limited research but have been considered to help with depression, bipolar disorder and PTSD. IGF1 has nerve regenerative capabilities. GDF11 may be beneficial in tissue repair, so useful in anti-aging, but with potential health drawbacks. About the guest: Ryan Smith attended Transylvania University and double majored in Philosophy and Biochemistry. In that time, he had multiple research internships at the University of Kentucky and University of Pennsylvania, studying large scale protein synthesis and physical chemistry. After graduation, he attended medical school at the University of Kentucky for 2 years. After finishing all the educational curriculum and passing USMLE Step 1, he decided to leave and help open up a pharmacy in the United States that focuses on peptide synthesis and formulations for pharmaceutical preparations. Since that time, Tailor Made Compoundinghas become licensed in over 45 states and territories, including Dubai, and has become the leader in the compounding of peptides and proteins for pharmaceutical use. Listento the Ben Greenfield Fitness podcast with Ingoglia about NAD. Learn moreabout the NAD Treatment Center and follow them on Twitter @NADTreatmentand on Facebook. About the guest: Thomas Ingoglia is the business director at NAD Treatment Center. He is a private investor with a master's degree in finance. In the midst of trading, investing in technology and developing real estate in Costa Rica, Tom became very sick. He was initially prescribed antibiotics, suffered from an adverse reaction and was told that he'd have stomach problems for the rest of his life. In the years that followed, Tom also developed severe food allergies. His symptoms worsened, and he next began dealing with insomnia, anxiety, muscle pain, tedinopathies, joint pain, chronic fatigue syndrome, altered and clouded cognition and headaches. He finally had a mental breakdown in 2008. After a prolonged period of taking antibiotics, Tom began experiencing tendonitis throughout his fingers, hands, wrists and ankles and feet, so he started taking pain medications to relieve this pain. He had to give up his career in trading because his sole focus for the next eight years would be on finding a cure to his growing symptoms. Tom's life consisted of working with physical therapists, going to the gym, going to new doctors, and trying new foods to see if it would help. "I was in the prison of constant pain, and would try anything, any place, that might help." Throughout Tom's eight-year battle, he was prescribed consistently and persistently more medication. For six years, he was taking excessive amounts of Hydrocodone and Tramadol every day. Tom became obsessed with researching symptoms and treatments and learned about the NAD+ treatment. He visited a clinic, and on Day 7 of his treatment, "It hit me. I started feeling better. I felt amazing. There was a calm that came over me. I felt safe. I just had no cravings for drugs or pain meds. There was no need for them. I just didn't have the excruciating pain that I had before. I felt eight years of pain melting away. Tom's pain began to dissipate, and he started getting his energy back. "I was so paranoid of relapses, because they had happened in the past, but over the course of the following months I started feeling better, just as the clinic had predicted. Finally, I got my sanity back." More than a year later, Tom has nearly fully recovered, from both his illness and his cravings for pain medications. He's immersed himself in better understanding the NAD+ that saved his life, along with related treatments, and has engaged two cofounders to assist him in building out a facility to help bring this treatment to others in similar situations.
S1 Ep 15Preventing Cardiovascular Disease – an Interview with Dr. Jeffry Life – Episode 15
On this episode, we're featuring a special RAAD Fest discussion from last year between Dr. Gladden and Dr. Jeffry Life, a doctor who has focused his practice on healthy aging and helping patients avoiding heart attacks and strokes. He incorporates the Bale-Doneen Method (learn more in the book Beat the Heart Attack Gene) in his treatment plans, which is about aggressively looking for vascular inflammation that causes heart disease and working to stop it. They discuss some of the testing that can be done to identify vascular risk factors, which fall outside of the normal insurance-based model of healthcare. Dr. Life describes what he does for himself to improve his own health, fitness and longevity. He and Dr. Gladden discuss hormone replacement and HGH and when it is appropriate treatment. Special Guest: In 1997, Dr. Jeffry Life was a board-certified family practice physician who was 59 years old, overweight, poorly conditioned body and in rapidly declining health. He couldn't tie his shoes without losing his breath. His stomach was huge, his muscles and joints ached, and he was miserable. He decided it was time to focus some much-needed medical attention on himself. Not knowing where to start, he began reading fitness magazines and came across an article that featured the winners of the Body-for-LIFE contest. He followed a low-glycemic/low-fat diet, took supplements, and plunged into a heavy exercise regimen with help from a former Navy Seal personal trainer, Ernie Baul. At the end of 1998, at 60 years of age and after consistently eating right and training right, he became the GRAND CHAMPION in Bill Phillip's 1998 Body-for-LIFE contest. He continued his commitment to the Fitness Lifestyle, yet despite my hard work and dedication, he started losing ground as he edged toward 63. He was slowly losing muscle mass, and strength and was regaining body fat. His energy level was waning, as was his libido. He had heard about the Anti-Aging Medicine Movement, so he investigated further. He learned a whole new level of protocols and philosophies and immediately agreed to become a patient. Within a couple weeks, Life started to see and feel a marked shift in his body, mind and spirit. He was once again becoming a vibrant, healthy and happy man. It was life-altering and became the catalyst that moved him from Family Medicine to healthy aging medicine. He wanted every man and woman that struggled as he had to have hope for a better life. Today, at 78 years of age, he is in the best shape of his life. He's in the gym 5 days a week. He has a thriving practice in Charleston, West Virginia (The Life Center for Healthy Aging), and he has authored three books: The Life Plan, Mastering the Life Plan and The Life Plan Diet. S1 Ep 11Your True Age - Episode 11
On this episode, Mark and Dr. Gladden discuss the many ways your true biological age can be determined, your longevity possibly predicted – and what you can do to improve these factors. Mark talks about his experience with an ozone therapy machine and Vasper at Dr. Gladden's clinic. Gladden explains the benefits of ozone in the body and how the therapy works, including increasing a molecule called NAD, which allows the cells to make more ATP. Telomeres are the "timekeepers" for the cell, caps at the ends of your chromosomes. You can somewhat predict the span of your life by the length of your telomeres, but you can do things to improve telomere lengths. A telomere length can show you're physiologically younger or older than your chronological age. One company that does a thorough test on telomere length is Life Length. Cell mitochondria make ATP, or energy for cells. Cancer develops in cells that are abnormal and energy-starved. Cancer cells turn on telomerase to re-lengthen their telomeres, possibly making them immortal. Your lifestyle significantly impacts if you are shortening or lengthening your telomeres. Exercise, fish oil, meditation, Astragalus (via cycloastragenol, for instance) are tools to preserve the length of your telomeres. Molecular hydrogen can protect against radiation damage to telomeres. They consider other ways to judge a person's true age, like arterial age, bone age and brain age. They discuss the mindset that one should develop that places a high value on your health. Many people sacrifice their health in an effort to get more money, but then they spend much of that money trying to recover their health later in life. Mark talks about this in terms of how we experience the life we have, at different ages, and he stresses the importance of making novelty a priority, so our life feels fuller for longer. Robb Taylor and Dr. Gladden also discuss 5 alternative cancer therapies your doctor might not tell you about. To read a more in-depth article, visit the blog. Ask yourself, "What can you do to take care of your real asset, your telomeres?" S1 Ep 10Improving Sexual Health for Men - Episode 10
On this episode that focuses on men's sexual health, Dr. Gladden, Mark and Robb explore the importance of sexual health on body, mind and longevity. Statistically, people who have more sex live longer, and your ability to perform sexually is a great barometer of the health of your cardiovascular and nervous systems. They discuss some of chemical responses in the body that occur before, during and after sex, including the release of nitric oxide and oxytocin. There are many ways we can sabotage our own sex lives, including consuming poor diets, alcohol and other harmful substances. Dr. Gladden talks about how essential nitric oxide is for sexual health and recommends some nitrate-rich foods that can help improve it. Gladden references products, BeetElite® and Neo40®, from https://www.humann.com/, which can be good supplements to increase your dietary nitrates. They discuss how popular erectile dysfunction drugs like Cialis®, Levitra® and Viagra® work and explain that they'll still only be as good as the nitric oxide we already have in our bodies. Hormones balance is critical not only for sexual health, but for overall health. It's not just about hormones levels the blood but also the metabolites that show up in the urine you expel. Gladden references the DUTCH (dried urine test for comprehensive hormones) test that he uses in his practice to examine hormone levels for patients. When critical hormone levels go down, we lose our ability to handle our environment, perform sexually and end up at risk for cancers and other physiological problems. They consider the different ways testosterone can be delivered as a supplement to aid in libido and sexual health. Dr. Gladden and Mark briefly talk about peptides, short chains of amino acids that are being experimented with for their health benefits. Melanotan and PT-141 may help improve libido and erectile function; Epithalon may improve orgasmic quality for people. Sex begins in the mind, so if there are challenges, it's essential to heal the biology as well as the psychology. Mark describes how neuro-associations can lead to difficult-to-break post-traumatic stress responses, and he explains when hypnosis might be able to help you. They consider how pornography can affect a person's ability to perform sexually, on chemical and psychological levels. When it comes to improving your sex life with your partner, continuous communication and engagement is essential for long-term compatibility. Ask yourself, "What can I do today to move in a direction that optimizes my biology and my psychology for my sexual health?"
S1 Ep 9How to Exercise for Longevity - Episode 9
First and foremost, it's crucial to envision that you'll still be able to do athletic activities when you're into your 80s, 90s and beyond. Dr. Gladden explains that he's getting older chronologically, but he's getting younger physiologically – and he speaks on his mindset that sets him up for success. The Doctor recommends getting a cardio pulmonary stress test before starting a new exercise plan, to avoid injury or catastrophic health problems like a heart attack. Another test that helps identify potential physiological problems ahead of time is the MET-TEST. They discuss different kinds of physical training, including HIIT (high intensity interval training) and the need to develop a cardio baseline by exercising at a slower heartrate over an extended period of time. The recommend spreading out the kind of workouts that you do, to spare yourself from injury and build different muscle groups. Gladden provides some other tips on preventing injury, as well as how to cope and maintain strength if you do get injured. Gladden also talks about Fortetropin®, a myostatin inhibitor that helps people build muscle by decreasing the way muscle is broken down. They talk about the benefits of "loading your frame" to improve skeletal, tendon and ligament strength, then they discuss balance training and how to incorporate it into your life. Creating a habit of doing something every day is much better for your body and mind rather than only pushing your body to its limits once or twice a week. Play is also critical when you exercise, for keeping your mind and body youthful. In This week in Longevity Science, they discuss Klotho, what is being called "the longevity protein," as it could one day play a vital role in helping treat potentially deadly conditions. For more information on the subject, visit https://wisdomtolive.com/longevity-protein-could-save-lives-improve-health/. Key takeaways: Before you start an exercise plan, be safe, get tested, and work out smart to prevent injury. For your mindset, focus on being fast, agile and strong at every age. Develop the habit of exercise in small, sustaining steps. Variety in exercise is a necessity. Keep exercise fun and try new things. For this week's empowering question, ask yourself, "How would you change your training now if you want to be engaged in your favorite activity years, or even decades, from now?"
S1 Ep 8What Your Doctor Should Tell You – Episode 8
This week's episode focuses on the difference between what your doctor's visit should sound like versus the few minutes the average doctor spends with a patient. Dr. Gladden explains why these short visits prevail in the current health care system, and they discuss how you need to change your mindset about who is responsible for keeping you healthy. They talk about the dangers of NSAIDs and a how most people use them. When anti-inflammatory drugs are used regularly, the root cause of the inflammation is often not addressed and is allowed to continue to cause damage. They discuss inflammation and how it leads to aging. This Week in Longevity Science also focuses on the average time a doctor spends with patients, questioning how much your healthcare provider can actually address your well-being in that short time. Dr. Gladden recommends how to get more out of your visits. For a unique perspective, Dr. Gladden goes through real results from some of Mark's own tests after a recent visit – showing step by step how this critical set of data can be used to extend Mark's lifespan.
S1 Ep 7Making Resolutions You Can Keep – Episode 7
As 2018 begins, there are things to keep in mind as you set goals for improving health and happiness. New Year's resolutions need to be measurable and have a timetable. Also, we need to create good habits to be able to achieve these goals. Fostering small, good habits set you up for greatness and also give you faster feedback on how well you're doing. As people dive into new diets at the start of the year, Dr. Gladden and Mark talk about how no diet is a perfect fit for everyone. You need to pay attention to your own genetic make-up or possibly put yourself at risk. This week in longevity science, Robb talks about gene editing and its possibilities for erasing genetic medical conditions. For more information on CRISPR, visit https://www.wired.com/story/what-is-crispr-gene-editing/ and https://gizmodo.com/in-2018-we-will-crispr-human-beings-1821540150. S1 Ep 6Immunity and Aging – An Interview with Dr. Gregory Fahy – Episode 6
Dr. Gregory Fahy is a cryobiologist and biogerontologist. He's credited with a many of the breakthroughs in cryopreservation, and he has been working on finding new ways to use already-approved drugs. Fahy talks about his work with human growth hormone (HGH) and shares the highlights of the results of his first human trials with it. He talks about what happens around age 62-65 for most people that rapidly increases chances of death. Fahy urges people interested in longevity to pay attention to what is on the cutting edge of medicine, he stresses the importance of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) in staying youthful, and he believes there is a profound connection between the immune system and aging. Also on the podcast, Mark explains what he means when he says Americans are eating like we're on death row. Dr. Gladden expands on HGH and considers some of the drawbacks and complications that could occur when it is used as treatment. In This Week in Longevity Science, they discuss peptides as a form of treatment, including how they function in the body and their promising regenerative properties. Research is being done to see how well peptides could work for highly customized medicine, not only for a specific disease but the exact disease within the individual. Ask yourself, "How am I going to learn more about this cutting-edge science in order to change the trajectory of my aging?" About the Guest: Gregory M. Fahy, Ph.D. Dr. Fahy earned his B.S. from the University of California at Irvine in 1972 and his Ph.D. from the Medical College of Georgia in 1977 for work on basic aspects of cryobiology. He spent the next 18 years developing methods for preserving whole organs at cryogenic temperatures at the American Red Cross in Maryland. In 1980, he conceived of preserving organs by vitrification. He published the first proof of principle of this concept in Nature in 1985 using mouse embryos as a model system, an event that led to the wide use of vitrification in academic and commercial animal husbandry as well as in human assisted reproduction. In 1995, he won the Grand Prize for Medicine from INPEX for his invention of the first effective computer-operated equipment for perfusing organs with cryoprotective agents. The same year, he left the Red Cross to become Chief Scientist of two biotechnology companies and the Head of the Tissue Cryopreservation Section of the Transfusion and Cryopreservation Research Program at the Naval Medical Research Institute in Bethesda, Maryland. In 1998, he became the Chief Scientific Officer and Vice President of 21st Century Medicine, where he invented several new principles in cryopreservation that have been extraordinarily effective in practical applications ranging from tissues to whole organs. Dr. Fahy's efforts have recently raised the question of whether human suspended animation might be an attainable goal that could allow the human species to survive in deep time as a result of enabling migration from the earth to other habitats in the cosmos. Dr. Fahy is a sought-after speaker and problem-solver. He is on the Board of Directors of several organizations concerned with cryopreservation or aging, serves on the Editorial Board of Rejuvenation Research, and has served as a reviewer for numerous journals and granting bodies. He has over 20 patents in fields related to cryopreservation, aging, transplantation, metabolic protection, and the reversal of autoimmunity and immunosenescence, and has many publications in the fields of cryobiology, aging, and nanotechnology. He currently serves as Director for Intervene Immune, Inc. Learn more about the projects they are working on and how to become a part of their clinical trials at http://interveneimmune.com/. S1 Ep 5The Future of Longevity Research – an Interview with Dr. Aubrey de Grey – Episode 5
Dr. Aubrey de Grey is a biological gerontologist on a crusade to defeat aging. He thinks we are within a couple of decades of rejuvenation medicine capable of adding another 30 years to human lifespan, proposing that the first person to live to 1,000 years old may already be alive today. In the field of longevity science, there are a few roadblocks, but the biggest one is funding. They discuss why it isn't a higher priority for average people to further this research. Mark and Dr. de Grey cover a number of concepts at the forefront of anti-aging, such as whether increasing telomere lengths may be beneficial against aging or may cause side effects. Dr. de Grey suggests we learn more about the subject of defeating aging. Then become an advocate for the research, to bring about these medicines faster. Mark also asks Dr. de Grey about the morality of pursuing greater longevity for humans. Also on the podcast, Mark and Dr. Gladden discuss how the typical medical approach isn't designed to promote longevity but treat the immediate problem. Medicine is still, after all, a business. Reimbursement is always going to trump research. They consider de Grey's focus on finding a big breakthrough, versus the approach of making what you have better now, along the way. For more information on This Week in Longevity Science, visit https://news.osu.edu/news/2017/08/07/regenerative-med-study/. S1 Ep 3A Learner's Mindset – Episode 3
One of the biggest challenge to living longer is getting over the accepted idea that people can't live well much longer than they do now. Just because we haven't seen it with our own eyes does not mean it's impossible. We must take the first step to ask the right questions rather than being confined by our own experiences. Mark talks about what some researches have concluded about a change that happened in the history of humans that may have caused a dramatic change in average lifespan. They reveal one of the most dangerous products/pollutants ever made that finds its way into our systems, discuss just how important water is and suggest what you should be drinking. They also start considering some of the many problems with the current insurance and "healthcare" systems, showing how living to 120 means you'll be an outlier working outside of those systems. Cancer is something that can be detected much sooner than most doctors ever test for, and Dr. Gladden talks about what helps cancer thrive that we can eliminate or reduce from our diet. They also conclude how health and aging relate to one another. S1 Ep 2Where Do I Start Living Beyond 120? - Episode 2
Living beyond 120 years doesn't mean just flipping a switch, but it requires a slow on-ramp of changing your habits. However, this journey should start today at whatever condition your body is currently in. Diet and exercise isn't a one-size fits-all prescription for every person, as genetics play an important role in how your body processes certain foods and responds to different physical activity. Precision is the key to real health optimization. When it comes to eating well, we need to start thinking of food as a means to support our mission of health. This doesn't mean becoming a fanatic about food, but Dr. Gladden and Mark explain what foods should be avoided and how to choose better nutrition and establish better eating strategies. They suggest sustainable changes that you can make now to begin your path to healthy longevity. S1 Ep 1What Does Living Beyond 120 Really Mean? – Episode 1
Where does the goal of 120 years come from? What does it really mean to live that long? Host Mark Young and longevity expert Dr. Jeffrey Gladden explain the basics of what people need to extend their health span farther than most people ever realize is possible. They consider the evidence that proves what the body is capable of and the "astronaut mindset" that we need to achieve it. Dr. Gladden explains the impact of our genes and how much you can control the fate of your own health, including focusing on the overall eco-system of your body. The current health care system is a broken one, where it only treats sick people. Dr. Gladden explains what changed his thinking about his own health and that of his patients. He started shifting his approach and learning how to improve health.
