Can This Blood Test Tell if You Are Going to Have a Heart Attack? - Episode 181

Do you know the #1 killer of people in the US that kills more people than all cancers combined? Join Dr. Jeffrey Gladden, Steve Reiter, and Rhonda Rhyne in this episode of the Gladden Longevity Podcast. Rhonda Rhyne is a highly accomplished healthcare executive with a Bachelor of Pharmacy and an MBA. Most of her career has been spent in cardiovascular medicine and industry, primarily in medical devices. With experience in General Electric Medical Systems and Cardiodynamics, she became fascinated by the biomarker world, particularly non-invasive cardiac output and single biomarkers such as BNP. Rhonda then became the CEO of Prevencio, leading the company towards developing multi-analyte or multi-protein tests after seeing the potential of these combinations. In this episode, they discuss current diagnostic testing modalities, including exercise/echo/nuclear stress tests, coronary artery calcium scores, cholesterol, single protein blood tests, and genetic scores that have lower accuracy as compared to AI-driven multiprotein blood tests. As the podcast progresses, they look at how Prevencio's HART blood tests were developed through the use of AI to select and combine multiple proteins and optionally clinical parameters in an algorithm and scoring system that has almost 90% accuracy for detecting whether you have heart disease and are at imminent risk of heart attack (HART CADhs), or one year risk of heart attack, stroke or cardiac death (HART CVE). They discuss the negative effects of alcohol on sleep and exercise routines, as well as how the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase can contribute to aging. Rhonda shares their experience conducting cardiopulmonary exercise tests and strategies for protecting kidneys during contrast dye exposure. We dive into the importance of identifying insulin resistance and understanding genetic expression in predisposition to cardiovascular disease. Finally, we look at a new algorithm combining six parameters for a more accurate diagnosis of coronary artery disease. Do you know you can use the HART tests as a baseline to track and trend your hopeful improvement or deterioration of your heart? Listen to this episode to learn about making 100 the new 30 and living young for a lifetime! Dr. Gladden welcomes everyone to the show and shares how he met Rhonda (2:15) Rhonda shares how she got into what she presently does and her background. Ep 170What You Don't Know About Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy - Episode 170

Join Dr. Jeffrey Gladden, Steve Reiter and Dr. Paul Harch in this episode of the Gladden Longevity podcast. Paul G. Harch, M.D. is a clinical private practice and academic physician who made a discovery in 1989 treating divers with chronic brain decompression illness. He found that the wounds in these divers' brains were similar to chronic extremity wounds, but they were only responsive to a non-traditional dose of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. In 2004, based on the life-extending outcomes of treating patients with dementia, he proposed the longevity potential of HBOT to the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. In March 2020, he proved the efficacy of HBOT in mild TBI persistent post-concussion syndrome in a randomized controlled trial and proposed HBOT application to COVID. Now in its 3rd edition, HBOT is explained as an epigenetic therapy with expected revolutionary effects on medicine, neurology, and longevity. In this episode, they talk about HBOT as a dual-component drug, the primary target of HBOT, and how HBOT is a treatment for wounds and inflammatory conditions in any location and of any duration. Do you know the medical benefits of HBOT? Listen to find out more. Listen to this episode to learn about making a 100 the new 30, and living beyond 120! Dr. Gladden considers Dr. Harch to be one of the fathers or grandfathers of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (00:58). Dr. Harch explains what drew him into researching hyperbaric oxygen therapy. (1:35) Dr. Harch discusses why hyperbaric oxygen therapy is used for scuba divers or diving medicine. (3:05) Dr. Harch mentions how important the first hour is when using hyperbaric oxygen to treat injuries divers may have. (6:05) Dr. Gladden shares that molecular hydrogen is a way to modulate reperfusion injury. (7:00) Dr. Harch notes that if you can give the hyperbaric treatment in the first hour, it totally inhibits those attachment molecules on the white blood cells from expressing themselves. (9:45) Dr. Harch says all coastal facilities that treat divers do not get the same results the US Navy does. (11:15) Dr. Gladden infers that everything is in its own balance. (13:10) Dr. Harch clarifies that barometric pressure is a separate entity from oxygen. (15:14) Dr. Harch mentions that only a few people have used dosing as a primary method of treatment. (18:15) Dr. Harch elaborates on hypoxia-inducing factors. (21:44) Dr. Harch says there is a whole literature now on hyperbaric oxygen preconditioning. (23:08) Dr. Harch expresses that if you give two hyperbaric treatments a night before cardiac surgery, you significantly reduce the cognitive insult that results after surgery. (25:40) Focuscalm.com uses the promo code longevity10 to get a 10 percent discount. (28:55) Dr. Harch argues that doctors are trained and taught reimbursable medicine. (30:17) Dr. Harch discloses that so much of brain diseases are caused by problems in the white matter. (33:07) Dr. Harch reveals his treatment approach. (36:45) Dr. Harch specifies that he has treated 130 drowned children over the years. (39:50) Dr. Harch recounts his interaction with the FDA some time back. (43:23) Dr. Harch gives reasons why people may not benefit from hyperbaric chambers. (46:33) Dr. Gladden points out how inflammation becomes a problem as people get older. (49:15) Dr. Harch recalls going to the NIH and FDA to seek funding for studies. (52:25) Dr. Harch testifies that he has treated many dementia patients and shares that hyperbaric treatment prolongs their lives. (57:05) Dr. Harch confesses that hyperbaric oxygen has limited or no effect on ALS by itself. (6:05) Dr. Koz points out a red flag he comes across when dealing with patient documentation. (7:55) Dr. Koz refers to going to treatment at twenty-seven or twenty-eight and not being able to name an emotion. (10:25) Dr. Koz reveals that he was very traditionally minded and never thought he would be doing functional medicine today. (12:00) Dr. Koz emphasizes that the symptoms of adrenal fatigue can look the same as the symptoms of a low thyroid, so different tests are needed. (13:55) Dr. Koz explains that the thyroid gland makes T4 and that T4 is converted to T3 and shares that T3 is the hormone that binds to cells all over your body. (16:00) Dr. Gladden mentions that the only way to deal with some issues is to do genetic testing. (18:19) Dr. Koz says an area of functional medicine he was not willing to get into originally was environmental medicine. (20:20) Dr. Koz advocates that the accumulation of toxins results in disease. (22:10) Dr. Koz explains how toxins may get stored in any cell in our body. (24:55) Dr. Koz maintains that heavy metal is the number one toxin he would test anyone for. (26:45) Dr. Koz reveals that organic products are not necessarily protected from things that are in the air. (30:09) Dr. Gladden says that those that are near highways have higher levels of exhaust fumes and toxic products in their toxic profiles. (33:05) Dr. Koz discloses that he will use different detox strategies depending on the toxin he finds. (37:10) Dr. Koz shares that his favorite detox supplement is glutathione. (39:19) Dr. Koz states that what he was taught in functional medicine was to start with the gut. (41:49) Dr. Gladden details that he was taught detoxification in phases. (43:00) Dr. Gladden lists the Dirty Dozen and how it is important to clean them before consuming. (47:00) Dr. Gladden highlights the importance of testing your environment and opening phase 3 pathways. (49:39) Dr. Koz realized that doing the gut was not enough, replacing hormones was not enough, but there were other steps that he needed to take. (51:00) Dr. Gladden expresses that he really enjoyed the conversation. (52:37) Dr. Koz ends his conversation by saying he would love for people to dig more into functional medicine's mental, emotional, and spiritual parts. (53:24) Dr. Gladden notes that what we fail to understand is that our biochemistry is mainly influenced by our mental, emotional, and spiritual state. (54:13) Dr. Koz is very confident that getting your hormones right starts with proper testing. (55:33) Steve thanks everyone for listening to the podcast. (0:35) Andrea explains how they started as a traditional practice and how they found out that traditional medicine is not always working for their clients. (1:30) Brent notes that over one-third of clients were not seeing improvements with traditional medicine. (3:00) Brent shares that we are currently in a time when the paradigm is being questioned. (5:43) Brent reveals that staying on antidepressants and other similar medications changes the physiology of how brain chemistry works. (7:15) Brent points out that there are some genes that indicate whether a person will metabolize a medicine quickly or slowly. (9:20) Andrea discloses that they ask about patients' history and lifestyle when trying to help patients. (11:00) Dr. Gladden recalls having read that neuroinflammation is associated with depression. (14:00) Dr. Gladden says that neuroinflammation is interesting because aging comprises increasing mechanisms of inflammation. (16:10) Dr. Gladden refers to what he is currently doing at Gladden Longevity called Brain Frequency, which is a modified form of transcranial magnetic stimulation. (18:34) Brent brings up the observation that no one has really done a clinical trial in the last 20 years testing the effects of NAD. (20:32) Dr. Gladden advocates that if you are interested in improving the energetics of the neuron, then getting intracellular NAD is what you are going to be after. (21:59) Andrea talks about the effectiveness of ketamine and how about sixty percent of the time it works for people with treatment-resistant depression. (25:55) Andrea points out that people seem to open up a little bit more after taking ketamine, and it helps them open up better than traditional therapy. (29:00) Brent throws light on ketamine, its use, and its FDA approval status. (31:00) Brent says ketamine is an NMDA receptor antagonist. Join Dr. Jeffrey Gladden in this interesting conversation with Mark Young Jr., With a resumé steeped in business startups and entrepreneurial ventures, Mark Young joined the Zona Health team in 2016 with a single purpose: to make the Zona Plus a household name. To say that Young's background is diverse would be an understatement, but "one consistent thread ties it all together," he would say, "and that is a passion for education … delivering practical solutions in a way that invites people in." And at Zona Health, education is the key to engagement. As the episode progresses, they talk about how Zona Plus increases nitric oxide, what isometric exercises have to do with longevity and blood pressure, and nitric oxide's influence on metabolic and cardiovascular function. Dr. Gladden welcomes Mark Young Jr. to the show. (2:20) Mark shares how he took a leadership position in Zona and mentions Dr. Gladden's love for biohacking. (4:10) Mark mentions what Dr. Wiley noticed while studying to know more about fighter pilots' reactions to high speeds. (6:49) Mark elaborates on how Dr. Wiley made the connection that isometrics improves cardiovascular health and specifically lowers blood pressure in that respect. (8:30) Mark tells how Zona calibrates to your current maximum voluntary contraction. (10:51) Dr. Gladden poses the question: Is there a problem if one squeezes the device harder than usual? (11:58) Dr. Gladden talks about how they measure grip metrics. (14:03) Mark notes that using Zona is just like doing a plank: everyone finds it easy at first, but it begins to look/feel difficult after a few minutes if they have not been doing it regularly. (16:00) Mark clarifies that there are signals on the Zona screen to help keep you in a particular range because it's too hard for anybody to stay at exactly the same pressure for two minutes. (18:35) Mark points out that nitric oxide flow reduces blood pressure by opening the cardiovascular system and that nitric oxide typically stays in the body for approximately six hours before it starts diminishing. (20:06) Mark highlights that an equal balance of sodium and potassium must exist in every cell at all times. (22:07) Dr. Gladden mentions how arteriosclerosis actually has to do with an increase in senescent cells inside the arterial wall, leading to that excess thickening, and then it's also complicated and stiffening by the destruction of something called the glycocalyx. (24:05) Dr. Gladden adds how over time, there is increased oxidative stress on the arterial wall. (26:00) Mark makes the statement that potassium is your longevity doctor. (28:00) Mark points out that using the Zona Plus, they have noticed that the higher the blood pressure, the better the drop. They also noticed approximately a 15% drop in systolic and up to a 10% drop in diastolic. (30:30) Mark adds that Zona increases blood flow, which obviously can reverse erectile dysfunction or eliminate that symptom. (32:39) Mark tells us how he uses nitric boost pre-workout to improve blood flow and energy. (34:24) Marke shares how he used Zona to deal with a blood pressure issue he had. (36:27) Dr. Gladden cautions that those with high blood pressure who want to try out the Zona should not stop taking their medication suddenly. (38:50) Mark advices monitoring your blood pressure frequently, so it does not become too low. (41:00) Mark explains how using Zona is a way to make your body do what your body was made to do. (44:19) Mark describes how we only have a sick care system instead of a health care system. (47:30) Dr. Gladden brings up how tragic it is when the sexual function is sacrificed or feels the need to be sacrificed for the sake of another health problem.
