Deep beneath the surface of the water, at the bottom of this manmade lake, sits the ruins of a once prosperous town. It’s frozen in time, bridges, roads, and even some buildings still in the same place they were 70 years ago when the river valley was flooded. Lake Lanier, today, is a vacation destination to millions who live in the Southern US, but that land beneath the water holds a history of violence, racism, death, and destruction that the water simply masks. This land is said to be the source of a curse so dark, and so deadly, that even the best swimmers find themselves being pulled down to the depths, as if the spirits of those who suffered so greatly so many years ago are still there to enact their revenge. From 1886 to 1922 construction on this 24,000 square foot mansion is said to have been near constant. Today there are 10,000 windows, 2,000 doors, and 160 rooms in this house, but at one point it was 7 stories high in some places and thought to have had more than 500 rooms within. Have you ever looked at someone you’ve just met and gotten an uneasy feeling? You’re not sure why, they seem pleasant enough, but there’s just this feeling in the pit of your stomach that something isn’t adding up. This week we are returning to England once again and talking about one of the most documented cases of a haunting probably ever! For nearly 18 months, a family of 5 was tormented by what some refer to as a poltergeist, and there were more than 30 witnesses who not only saw for themselves but captured photos and audio recordings of the activity. Tucked away in a small market town in the Cotswolds in Gloucestershire, England, sits a storied building so terrifying that ghost hunters who have explored it vow to never stay alone. The Ancient Ram Inn is hundreds of years old and those who have been brave enough to visit claim there is a dark and oppressive energy residing within. The claims about its past paint a picture of violence, tragedy, and misfortune that lead many to believe a darkness now calls this building home, and some even go as far as saying it is the most haunted house in England. There are stories of wild poltergeist activity, sightings of full bodied apparitions, and even physical attacks on investigators who enter looking for proof of the paranormal. It’s been described by some paranormal investigators as one of the darkest places they’ve ever encountered. Even the once Bishop of Gloucester, Rev. Oftentimes we will tell stories of spirits and hauntings in places where we can’t quite place the origins or reasons for visits from the other side. But then there are certain places where so much harm, bloodshed, and violence have occurred that it’s no surprise when you hear ghostly tales of haunted houses and entities lurking through the shadows. Today we are talking about one of those places. Harpers Ferry, WV is known for its many battles and conflicts before and during the American Civil War, but it is also known to be one of the more haunted places in the US. With spirits of well known founders, rebels, revolutionaries, and victims of unimaginable tragedies, this small town is incredibly interesting. But when you add to it the fact that it’s the halfway point that many hikers stop in as they make their way through the Appalachian Trail, I think Harpers Ferry has its own unique and fascinating story. Especially since it touts being home to the oldest ghost tour in America. Ever since we did our first episode on past lives and possible reincarnation, we have been fascinated with the subject. It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and to kick off the holiday season we are doing a month full of ghost stories, your stories to be exact! There’s just something about the vibe at a theme park. If you’ve ever visited one, then I think you know what I mean. The smell of fair food in the air, distant screams from rides towering above you in the sky, and the thrill you get at watching lines of people before you fly in train cars at incredible speeds or dangle stories high as they are shot off into the air. You know that feeling of anticipation (and maybe even suspense) as you slowly watch yourself and a group of strangers with you make their way up to the very top of the first hill on a roller coaster. But what if I told you that between the squeals for joy and the endless days of fun, that many of these parks harbor much more than the people who work tirelessly to keep it all running. What if I told you that many of these parks contain the spirits of those who once visited and unfortunately lost their lives on those grounds. Well that’s what we’re discussing today! Kings Island in Ohio and Lake Compounce in Connecticut both have stories from its past that may explain some of the strange and paranormal reports by guests and staff. While doing research for another topic (that may or may not be coming at another time now) I came across a story so interesting, and it took me down a total rabbit hole! I spent hours reading and listening to stories about people going missing in national parks in the US. I had heard of Missing 411 before, though I have never read any of David Paulides’s books or watched any of his shows, and there are so many strange cases reported by people spending time hiking and camping in these vast expanses of wilderness. This led me to another story, so interesting and at the very least paranormal-adjacent, and I literally had to share it with all of you. The story of Haley Zega and her time alone (but possibly not entirely) in the Ozarks at just 6 years old is shocking and incredibly intriguing and may leave you with nothing but questions by the end. Happy November Ghosteas! We thought we should visit a few haunted cemeteries today and talk about the ghosts and spirits that make these places so well known. In store today we have the possible curse placed on the Lafayette Pioneer Cemetery in Oregon, the half-man-half-goat creature running through the trees of the Red Ash Cemetery in Tennessee, the dark shadow who physically attacks those who come near his grave in Greyfriars Kirkyard in Edinburgh, and the weeping woman crying from the tomb in which she was buried alive in Buenos Aires.
