Late into the night of September 8, 1972, Minnie Winston was taking a bath before going to bed. It had been a typical warm fall day in the south, and a nice bath was just what she needed to wash away her sweat and any worries she may have had while taking care of her husband. She had always been more of a night owl and her husband, William, the only other person living with her at the time, had been asleep for a couple of hours at this point, tired and frail from his battle with his health at his older age. The house was still and quiet as Minnie stepped out of the tub. But as she put her foot down, she realized that what she thought was water was stickier than it should have been. She lifted her foot and found that there was a strange red substance on the floor. She was confused, because she hadn’t seen it when she got into the tub and it seemed to be coming from in between the tiles. Not concerned at this point she walked out into the hallway, noticing more red spots all along the way. It was splattered on the floor and across the bottom of the walls. She went to her bedroom to check on her husband and make sure all was well. He laid there, still sleeping just as he had been before she got into the tub. She wasn’t really sure what was happening and woke him up, letting him know that something strange was going on. We often ask a question here on the pod – can people manifest their own hauntings. We know that hauntings have occurred via summoning with objects like ouija boards. Deep beneath the surface of the water, at the bottom of this manmade lake, sits the ruins of a once prosperous town. It’s frozen in time, bridges, roads, and even some buildings still in the same place they were 70 years ago when the river valley was flooded. Lake Lanier, today, is a vacation destination to millions who live in the Southern US, but that land beneath the water holds a history of violence, racism, death, and destruction that the water simply masks. This land is said to be the source of a curse so dark, and so deadly, that even the best swimmers find themselves being pulled down to the depths, as if the spirits of those who suffered so greatly so many years ago are still there to enact their revenge. From 1886 to 1922 construction on this 24,000 square foot mansion is said to have been near constant. Today there are 10,000 windows, 2,000 doors, and 160 rooms in this house, but at one point it was 7 stories high in some places and thought to have had more than 500 rooms within. Have you ever looked at someone you’ve just met and gotten an uneasy feeling? Oftentimes we will tell stories of spirits and hauntings in places where we can’t quite place the origins or reasons for visits from the other side. But then there are certain places where so much harm, bloodshed, and violence have occurred that it’s no surprise when you hear ghostly tales of haunted houses and entities lurking through the shadows. Today we are talking about one of those places. Harpers Ferry, WV is known for its many battles and conflicts before and during the American Civil War, but it is also known to be one of the more haunted places in the US. With spirits of well known founders, rebels, revolutionaries, and victims of unimaginable tragedies, this small town is incredibly interesting. But when you add to it the fact that it’s the halfway point that many hikers stop in as they make their way through the Appalachian Trail, I think Harpers Ferry has its own unique and fascinating story. Especially since it touts being home to the oldest ghost tour in America. Ever since we did our first episode on past lives and possible reincarnation, we have been fascinated with the subject. It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and to kick off the holiday season we are doing a month full of ghost stories, your stories to be exact!
