Episode #398: Reviving a 200-Year-Old Whisky Distillery with David Prior
David Prior is a lifelong entrepreneur. He founded Baroda Packaging, which was acquired in 2007, before turning his eye to yoghurt, with Five:AM Organics, which after just three years in the market was acquired for $80 million. A year later, in 2015, David proceeded to invest half of his net worth into the acquisition of Bladnoch Distillery, a 200 year old whisky distillery in the Scottish lowlands that was in administration; destitute and downtrodden, having not produced any Scotch Whisky for almost a decade. David saw an opportunity to bring life back, not only to the distillery, but to the people of Bladnoch; after the purchase, he returned jobs to everyone who had lost them and was dedicated to restoring value to the community's history and heritage, empowering them for a successful future. This was a fascinating conversation that unpacked some of David’s business philosophies. We unpacked: 1 - why your business doesn’t necessarily need a unique value proposition to be successful 2 - why David decided to pour all of his money into Bladnoch and a non-for-profit foundation, instead of sailing into the sunset 3 - how David regulates stress 4 - what it takes to build a successful FMCG business We covered this, and more, so strap yourself in for my conversation with David Prior. Episode #397: Gad Saad on Social Justice Politics at Work
Gad Saad is a Lebanese-Canadian evolutionary psychologist at the John Molson School of Business who applies evolutionary psychology to marketing and consumer behaviour. His latest book is The Parasitic Mind: How Infectious Ideas Are Killing Common Sense, and it explores the numerous idea pathogens permeating today’s social landscape, such as, but not limited to post-modernism. We covered lots of ground in this rapid fire 30-minute conversation with Saad, including: How dangerous fringe ideas are permeating the mainstream The problem with Diversity and Inclusion programs Social media censorship and free speech absolutism Fake news Social justice politics at Google and Spotify Falsification theory The tyranny of the minority How the silent majority can stand up And, why rapper 50 Cent is, apparently, no longer black This was a very important discussion about ideas that hold truth firmly in their crosshairs, and can have devastating consequences on how we work and live if kept unchecked. We can either bury our heads in the sand, or, we can listen, learn, and act, so with that I bring you the one and only, Gad Saad. Episode #393: My new book, Time Rich, is out today + 10 Productivity Tips
Today’s the day (finally)! My fifth book, Time Rich: Do Your Best Work, Live Your Best Life, is now available. The book was originally slated for release in May, but with all of the uncertainty surrounding coronavirus at the time, my publisher (Wiley) and I decided to push it back to October, thinking that the world would have returned to some semblance of normality by then. While that isn’t exactly the case, the book is perhaps more relevant now than ever, with people spending, on average, 11 hours a day staring at screens since remote work became more than just a fringe startup and freelancer movement, and a reality for almost everybody employed in a white collar profession. As Roman statesman and philosopher Seneca put it almost two millennia ago, “people are frugal with their money but not with their time”, but unlike money, time cannot be earned back once we’ve spent it and it is by virtue of the shortness of life, the most precious commodity we have. Time Rich builds upon the foundation laid by my Harvard Business Review article, The Case For the 6-Hour Workday, and provides actionable insights for not only the lone worker, but teams and leaders at large organizations. It’s about reorganizing how we work - something we’ve never truly learned how to do - in order to not just be more productive and more innovative, but free up time to lead our best lives. The book has been endorsed by a number of thought leaders, including Adam Grant, Nir Eyal and Whitney Johnson. Adam Grant (bestselling author of Originals and Give and Take) was kind enough to say that “Steve Glaveski understands something that few leaders have figured out: it’s possible to do less and get more done. This book offers a blueprint for working smarter.” Nir Eyal (bestselling author of Hooked and Indistractable) put it simply; “Steve Glaveski offers countless ways to get more out of each day”. If you’re looking to get more out of your days - whether that be at work or in your personal life - then I am sure that a modest investment in this book will repay itself in orders of magnitude. And if you’re not convinced, below you’ll find ten quick tips which scratch the surface of what you will find in Time Rich. How You Can Support the Book Buy the book: Of course, the best way to support the book is to pick up a copy. You can do so here. Bulk buy: If you work for a company and think that your organization might benefit from learning how to be smarter with its time, then I am offering bulk buy deals, which also include a remote keynote talk. You can learn more about that here. This might be of interest to your human resources team. Leave a review: And if you’ve read and enjoy the book, I would really appreciate it if you took a minute or two to leave a review on Amazon, Goodreads, Booktopia or your platform of choice. Share it on social: If you’d otherwise like to support me and the book, you can share it to socials with the following pre-populated share links, or forward this email to some colleagues or friends: Twitter | Facebook | Linkedin Thank you so much for your support - without an audience of people coming back to read my articles and listen to my podcast, this book would simply not have happened. He has also been elected as a Consultant for the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry. Episode #391: Get Rich and Die Trying with John Roa
At the age of twenty-six, John Roa founded a tech-consulting and design firm, ÄKTA, that he sold for a fortune to Salesforce. His account of his rise from a self-described below-average student, to becoming a poster boy for the ambitious, successful young entrepreneur, to nearly destroying himself in the process is the subject of his book, A Practical Way to Get Rich . . . and Die Trying. Roa's twenty-year-long journey from being dead-broke to wealth he never imagined is an absurd and often comical story of talent, luck, risk, rapidly changing technology, larger-than-life personalities, sex, gambling, and excessive alcohol and drug consumption. We covered lots of ground in this conversation, including: How Roa went from a six-figure debt to multi-millionaire before the age of 30 The toxic lifestyle he led while building his company, AKTA The psychotic breakdown he experienced, which forced him to sell his company And the lessons learned along the way about business and life Listeners of this show will know that I am an advocate for balance, and Roa’s tale serves as a cautionary one that I hope entrepreneurs listening to this will learn from. Episode #380: Rising From the Startup Ashes with Michael Fox
Michael Fox is an entrepreneur and investor, best known for co-founding Shoes of Prey, the online retail startup that raised US$25M and grew its team to 200 people, before lagging demand forced the company to famously call it a day in 2019. Today, he heads up plant-based meat alternative company, Fable Foods Co. Michael joined me to unpack the Shoes of Prey journey, the highs, the lows, the lessons learned and on being a proverbial phoenix rising from the ashes. We touched on so many big ticket items, but three that stood out for me were: 1 - how so-called market validation can lead startups astray if it is not performed carefully 2 - why raising venture capital isn’t always necessary for startup success and can sometimes come at a detriment to it 3 - how Michael consciously uncoupled from his wife Jodie but continued to work together as co-founders at Shoes of Prey for another 7 years We unpacked this and a ton more, so strap yourself in for an enlightening conversation with the one and only, Michael Fox. Topics Discussed: Michael’s early years as a lawyer and why and how he got out The early days of Shoes of Prey Organic growth v venture-backed growth Market research and validation - how it can set you astray Conscious customer feedback v unconscious reality What Michael would do differently next time Ethical manufacturing Media backlash Laying staff off empathetically Ethical manufacturing The cost of employee engagement and retention Being transparent without compromising employee motivation The importance of not deriving your entire self worth from one thing Conscious uncoupling Humility and ego amidst turmoil Why it can be darkest before the dawn Why 2019 was Michael’s best year Fable Food Co and its mission of ending industrial agriculture Show Notes: Twitter: @mmmichaelfox Fable Foods: fablefood.co IG: @fablefoodco ---------- Listen to Future Squared on Apple Podcasts goo.gl/sMnEa0 Also available on: Spotify, Google Podcasts, TuneIn, Stitcher and Soundcloud Twitter: www.twitter.com/steveglaveski Instagram: www.instagram.com/@thesteveglaveski Future Squared: www.futuresquared.xyz Steve Glaveski: www.steveglaveski.com Medium: www.medium.com/@steveglaveski Steve's book: www.employeetoentrepreneur.io NEW Facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/futuresquared/ Watch on YouTube: https://bit.ly/2N77FLx GET COACHED BY LUCAS: https://www.ergogenic.health/product/coaching GET LUCAS TO DESIGN YOUR SUPPLEMENT PROTOCOL: https://www.ergogenic.health/product/custom-stack Hosted on Acast. Paul McIntyre is the host of ABC Radio’s ‘Medical Matters’ and has more than two decades of experience at ABC Radio. He is also a playwright and author. His book, Use It or Lose It, is a guide to remaining vital through mid-life and beyond. We unpacked many topics from the book, including: Why body and mind is a false dichotomy What to eat for a ripe old age Exercise and mobility The connection between sleep, anxiety and neurodegenerative disease Community and the value of a flourishing social life Maintaining meaning after retirement The importance of learning Activities seniors can perform to ward off dementia How we can engage seniors and look after them during COVID-19 Show Notes: Get the book: https://www.amazon.com.au/Use-Lose-Paul-McIntyre-ebook/dp/B07P18SDD4 Twitter: @pauldavidmc ---------- Listen to Future Squared on Apple Podcasts goo.gl/sMnEa0 Also available on: Spotify, Google Podcasts, TuneIn, Stitcher and Soundcloud Twitter: www.twitter.com/steveglaveski Instagram: www.instagram.com/@thesteveglaveski Future Squared: www.futuresquared.xyz Steve Glaveski: www.steveglaveski.com Medium: www.medium.com/@steveglaveski Steve's book: www.employeetoentrepreneur.io NEW Facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/futuresquared/ Watch on YouTube: https://bit.ly/2N77FLx GET COACHED BY LUCAS: https://www.ergogenic.health/product/coaching GET LUCAS TO DESIGN YOUR SUPPLEMENT PROTOCOL: https://www.ergogenic.health/product/custom-stack Hosted on Acast. Episode #378: Steve Blank talks Virus Survival Strategies for Business
Steve Blank - considered by many to be the father of modern entrepreneurship - returns to Future Squared to talk COVID19 virus survival strategies for business. Steve is credited with spearheading the customer development movement, which was popularised by his former pupil’s Eric Ries book, under the guise of the lean startup. We discussed the specific steps that startup CEOs, and to an extent leaders at large organisations too, should be taking in order to not just survive COVID19, but with some luck, come out the other side stronger. Specifically, we talked: Startup runway, and why it’s no time to move slowly if yours is short Whether COVID19 is a 3 month, 1 year or 3 year problem Whether you need a new business model and operating plan New opportunities presented by COVID19 Managing board and investor expectations Compassionate leadership and more… So with that, it is with much pleasure that I welcome back to the show, the one and only, Steve Blank. Episode #376: How to Avoid Going Crazy During COVID-19 Lockdown
Many of us the world over now find ourselves in isolation, either forced to shelter in place as is the case in large parts of California, or practice social distancing and effectively spend more time at home. While Counterstrike gamers and Netflix bingers might’ve been unknowingly in training for this moment their entire lives, for most of us — even the introverts among us — this period might test our emotional fortitude, all the more so because there is uncertainty around when this experiment in social isolation will end. According to The Depression Project, isolation has the capacity to and is already triggering a number of mental health issues as a result of: decreased financial security social withdrawal and loneliness fear the health of our loved ones anxiety over catching COVID19 a survival mindset less distractions lack of control and feelings of hopelessness It’s no wonder that solitary confinement is used as a form of punishment at many prisons — one that has been found to cause anguish, provoke serious mental and physical health problems, and work against rehabilitation. In this episode, I unpack what you can be doing to come out the other side a strong, better version of yourself. Episode #375: 23 Steps to Surviving COVID19 for Startups and Small Business
Successfully building a company is a Herculean feat at the best of times — 95% of startups fail and most small businesses close their doors before they turn five. With that in mind, it might seem near impossible to do so when there’s a global pandemic shutting down the world’s economy. Nobody knows for sure when we will emerge out of this black hole and markets will resume normal programming — estimates ranging from several months to several years. What we do know is that unlike the global financial crisis of 2008 which pointed to internal problems in our financial markets, COVID-19 represents an external event, and so it stands to reason that we should expect a rapid recovery once the crisis subsides — or at least we hope so. Based on this, if your company has less than 24 months runway left, it’s time to calmly delineate between what you can control and what you can’t, and focus on the former. As such, I’ve taken the time to prepare the following 23 steps — many of which are applicable to both startups and small businesses — to increase liquidity, decrease burn rate, increase runway and ultimately increase thee chances of surviving the so-called apocalypse. Episode #374: COVID-19 and How to Crush Working From Home
COVID-19 has had a deleterious effect on our world as we know it. First, it sent sharemarkets into a downward spiral, then it put countries such as Italy into lockdown, and forced the cancelation of festivals such as SXSW(something the author of this article was going to attend — bummer!). Oh, and who can forget ‘toiletgate’ — Australians, embarrassingly for me, stripping grocery stores bare of necessities such as toilet paper, hand sanitiser, pasta, rice and Vegemite. He is also an unapologetic animal fanatic, and is a past member of the Board of Directors of Furry Friends Adoption, Clinic & Ranch in his town of Jupiter, Florida. We unpacked the following in this conversation: The five laws of the go giver way - value, compensation, influence, receptivity and authenticity - and how applying them can benefit you in business and in life Why it’s not what you sell, but the value it delivers that matters most - and why that value need not always be direct or monetary; and How to get past objections and determine the conditions required to sell your product We also touched on cognitive biases and how to get better at mastering them, the left-right political divide and how to better persuade people to your line of thinking, and the value of free markets. WIth that, please enjoy my conversation with the one and only, Bob Burg. Episode #355: Forever Noob
“There is nothing permanent except change”. Heroclitus’ dictum is over 2,500 years old, and it’s more relevant than ever. Moore’s law, the doubling of computing power every 18 months, is fifty years old. In 1971, Intel’s 4004 contained just 2,300 transistors. Today’s microprocessors contain over 20 billion. The meteoric rise in computing power is rendering businesses big on process, five year plans and consensus seeking meetings unable to adapt fast enough. ---- ---------- Employee to Entrepreneur book: www.employeetoentrepreneur.io Listen to Future Squared on Apple Podcasts goo.gl/sMnEa0 Also available on: Spotify, Google Podcasts, TuneIn, Stitcher and Soundcloud Twitter: www.twitter.com/steveglaveski Instagram: www.instagram.com/@thesteveglaveski Future Squared: www.futuresquared.xyz Steve Glaveski: www.steveglaveski.com Medium: www.medium.com/@steveglaveski NEW Facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/futuresquared/ GET COACHED BY LUCAS: https://www.ergogenic.health/product/coaching GET LUCAS TO DESIGN YOUR SUPPLEMENT PROTOCOL: https://www.ergogenic.health/product/custom-stack Hosted on Acast. Episode #352: How Big Is Your Team? Who Cares!
“How Big Is Your Company?” Human beings are social animals. Henceforth, like a peacock signaling reproductive fitness with its large and colourful tail, human beings signal through our haircuts, clothes, the cars we drive, the places we live, what we eat (or choose not to eat — here’s looking at you vegans and intermittent fasters), when we wake up, how often we work out, and the titles on our business cards — among a plethora of other things. If you’re an entrepreneur or leader, then you’ve probably felt the urge to signal how many people you have working for you. At the very least, you’ve no doubt been asked the status gathering question, “how big is your team?” before. The thing is, the answer to this question no longer means what it once did. --- Listen to Future Squared on Apple Podcasts goo.gl/sMnEa0 Also available on: Spotify, Google Podcasts, TuneIn, Stitcher and Soundcloud Twitter: www.twitter.com/steveglaveski Instagram: www.instagram.com/@thesteveglaveski Future Squared: www.futuresquared.xyz Steve Glaveski: www.steveglaveski.com Medium: www.medium.com/@steveglaveski NEW Facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/futuresquared/ GET COACHED BY LUCAS: https://www.ergogenic.health/product/coaching GET LUCAS TO DESIGN YOUR SUPPLEMENT PROTOCOL: https://www.ergogenic.health/product/custom-stack Hosted on Acast. Episode #353: Trillion Dollar Coach with Google’s Jonathan Rosenberg and Alan Eagle
Jonathan Rosenberg is the former Senior Vice President of Products at Google and current advisor to Alphabet Inc. CEO Larry Page. Alan Eagle is the Director of Executive Communications at Google. The pair co-wrote How Google Works, and the newly released Trillion Dollar Coach: The Leadership Playbook of Silicon Valley's Bill Campbell, alongside longtime Google CEO and Chairman, Eric Schmidt. Trillion Dollar Coach unpacks management lessons from legendary coach and business executive, Bill Campbell, whose mentoring of some of our most successful modern entrepreneurs has helped create well over a trillion dollars in market value. Bill Campbell played an instrumental role in the growth of several prominent companies, such as Google, Apple, and Intuit, fostering deep relationships with Silicon Valley visionaries, including Steve Jobs, Larry Page, and Eric Schmidt. In addition, this business genius mentored dozens of other important leaders on both coasts, from entrepreneurs to venture capitalists to educators to football players, leaving behind a legacy of growing companies, successful people, respect, friendship, and love after his death in 2016. We unpacked many of Campbell’s teachings in this episode, including: 1 - Why it’s not your title, but your people who make you a leader 2 - How to build trust into the fabric of your organization so that it avoids the debilitating politics that plagues many organizations today 3 - The value of taking a people and team first approach 4 - Why it’s not what potential hires did in the past that matters, but how they did it 5 - First principles thinking 6 - Why the process can sometimes matter more than the outcome 7 - How to get the best out of people who might be underperforming ...and so much more. With that, strap yourself in for a fascinating conversation on what it takes to build a culture that gives organizations the best chance of thriving in the 21st Century, with my guests, Jonathan Rosenberg and Alan Eagle. Topics Discussed: Who Bill Campbell was Trip reports Team first Why every sports team needs a coach NBA basketball and the Warriors What exactly is a coach? What does it take to be coachable? Why your people make you a leader, not your title How to deal with aberrant geniuses Why tension in the machine can be a good thing The rule of two - a decision and relationship building mechanism The smart creative Asking ‘how’, not ‘what’, when hiring How to create an environment that empowers great people to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson Firing geniuses First principles thinking Process v outcome Radical transparency and the elephant in the room Mitigating the toxicity of politics Commitment over consensus Decisiveness Vulnerability and trust What to look for in new hires Caring for your team Building relationships first Show Notes: Slideshare: https://www.slideshare.net/ericschmidt/trillion-dollar-coach-book-bill-campbell The book website: www.TrillionDollarCoach.com Jon on Twitter: @jjrosenberg Alan on Twitter: @aeaglejr Get the book:https://amzn.to/30rMxVl ---------- Employee to Entrepreneur book: www.employeetoentrepreneur.io Listen to Future Squared on Apple Podcasts goo.gl/sMnEa0 Also available on: Spotify, Google Podcasts, TuneIn, Stitcher and Soundcloud Twitter: www.twitter.com/steveglaveski Instagram: www.instagram.com/@thesteveglaveski Future Squared: www.futuresquared.xyz Steve Glaveski: www.steveglaveski.com Medium: www.medium.com/@steveglaveski NEW Facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/futuresquared/ GET COACHED BY LUCAS: https://www.ergogenic.health/product/coaching GET LUCAS TO DESIGN YOUR SUPPLEMENT PROTOCOL: https://www.ergogenic.health/product/custom-stack Hosted on Acast.
