Did they really "BAN RAW" or not? RAWtalk 159

E

I must have had 200 people send me the article discussing Reuters supposedly “banning RAW files” and knew I needed to take a close look at what they were actually saying. The reason so many people were up in arms is because they read a headline that mentioned “banning raw” in it. The truth of the matter is RAW was not being banned, editing was. We go in depth on this news at 13:15 of the show. This weeks show is brought to you by ATOMOS which we use and LOVE. If you’re looking to get a clean signal straight off the camera and get beyond the 20/30 min record limit you need to check out Atomos. They have units starting as low as $295 that will get anyone in the game to get longer record times and much better video quality. Go check them out. Bruce Bennett was back on the show this week to discuss the release of his new book “Hockey’s Greatest Photos”. You don’t have to love hockey to enjoy this discussion that takes us through the journey of creating this photo book. Bruce was also on RAWtalk 106 with an awesome interview done on the Philadelphia Flyers bench. Gear of the week is the Sony RX100 IV pocket camera that we just did an unboxing and sniff test of. We spun the wheel and we requested that you send in your audio recording of you saying “Spin That WHEEEEEEELLLLL” to SingWheelOfFro at Gmail dot com. Thank you guys for your continued support. I bought an iPad Pro, does it SUCK? RAWtalk 158

E

Yes I ordered the new iPad Pro and yes Stephen and Todd made fun of me for a good long while for using it during this weeks show. Is it for photographers, do you need it, will I return it or love it? You get to hear my thoughts at 2:55 of this weeks episode. This weeks show is brought to you by the NEW Rode VideoMic ME. Aka this really cool microphone that plugs into your IOS or Android device and gives you better sound than the build in microphone. Oh yea, it’s only $59, well worth the purchase if you use your phone to record a lot of video. The FroKnowsPhoto SHOW is now LIVE and you can see the premiere episode right here http://froknowsphoto.com/show/ We have Photo News, Flying Solo and two winners of the Wheel of Fro this week. Thank you all for your continued support, without you we wouldn’t be able to bring you all of this fun and informative content. This guy followed my advice, now he's making BANK: RAWtalk 157

E

This is the second time Matt has been on the show. The first time was Episode #80 when he had only 30,000 youtube subscribers. Now he’s back and has raised his number to over 150,000. No he’s not a photographer or videographer, he is a hair dresser. He’s a hairdresser who has built a following and is now sharing with me how he did it so it can help you. Don’t forget that I started with ZERO subscribers and so did Matt, you can learn a lot from what he’s doing to help your business no matter what it is. We talk all things Misterwvies as both Stephen and I shot the show and Todd was there to dance during their last song. I had all access to shoot anything and everything and Stephen had access to the pit. This weeks show is PLUG FREE because their are five Mondays in November but we wanted to thank VideoBlocks and Atomos for their continued support. It’s because of sponsors like them that we are able to bring this show to you. We have Gear of the Week and no flying solo but we have the Wheel of FRO. Thank you guys for your continued support and please enjoy the show.

The Wedding Photographer was a NO SHOW: RAWtalk 156

E

The Wedding Photographer was a NO SHOW: RAWtalk 156 It turns out that the wedding photographer did not show up to a wedding I was attending a few weeks back. I debating taking my camera bag with me but ultimately opted to leave it home. The only thing I brought with me was the DXO One. Check out 5:05 of this episode to hear the story and see some of the images I was able to capture. This weeks show is brought to you by VideoBlocks. As you know we love VideoBlocks and long before they were a sponsor we were using their product. I ever personally signed up for the seven day free trial where I needed to enter a credit card and wasn't happy about it. Now you can get a FREE 7 day no credit card needed trial Right Here http://videoblocks.com/go/froknowsfree What is YouTube red and what’s it mean for you and I? What happens when a photographer who sells educational products online tells anyone who purchases her products that they can’t make videos or teach photography for two years? Stephen hit’s us with his photo news all before we discuss the Flying Solo questions and finish with some Gear Of The Week: Nikon 24-70 2.8 VR. Photography HORROR Stories Halloween Show: RAWtalk 155

E

This is a special Halloween episode as well as a late night recording show which means we had a few drinks and a lot of fun. I had just landed from Minnesota and came right home to record the show with the guys. This weeks show is brought to you by HOYA and their brand new killer filters the HD3’s. We love them and so do many of you, check them out. Instead of Flying Solo this week, I changed it up and request your “Photography Horror” stories. We all have them and you guys submitted some really scary ones that hopefully never happen to any of us. Stephen hits us with his drunken photo news followed by gear of the week, wheel of FRO and a lot of laughs. Thank you for your continued support of RAWtalk!!! Exclusive Sneak Peek of the FroKnowsPhoto TV Show: RAWtalk 154

E

Let’s get right to it, we filmed what we are calling the Pilot episode of the FroKnowsPhoto Show. We give you a sneak peek of the intro at 11:46 of this weeks RAWtalk. Many of you remember when we did RAWtalk from the Grand Canyon, well while we were there we did much more. We filmed an entire episode of a “reality” show centered around travel, adventure and photography. Check out the trailer for yourself and let us know what you think. This weeks show is brought to you by ATOMOS. The NEW Atomos Assassin which we so happen to be using this week is an extremely adorable 4k monitor and recorder. We love this recorder because not only do we get a clean signal from our cameras sensors via HDMI we get a HUGE 7 inch monitor and a 4k recorder. Getting all of that for an affordable price is insane. I keep saying it, you could pay the same amount for just a monitor without the recording option. You might as well get this bad boy, check out Atomos.com Todd brought in his maternity photos from when his wife was pregnant with his daughter. I must say, Todd’s face and look in the video is just priceless. Check it out. We have Photo News with Stephen, Flying Solo and the Wheel Of FRO. Thank you guys for your continued support and watching the show each and every week, we appreciate your support. I got in a FIGHT with Mr BIG at the airport: RAWtalk 153

E

I don’t like to fight generally but when I do I make sure it’s at the airport after you go through security so you know there’s a good chance the other person doesn’t have any weapons. This is just a stupid story but I think it’s one worth telling. This weeks show is sponsored by RODE who wants to give you 50% OFF all MERCH in their store when you use code FroKnowsPhoto until the 19th. You can’t go wrong with their gear as it’s not only well made but dam affordable with or without the code. Don’t forget I am giving away a camera, check out the site for how you can enter. I got to play with the DXO one camera, Stephen catches us up on photo news and two winners get picked for the Wheel of FRO. Thanks to everyone for their continued support week in and week out it is greatly appreciated. 00:00:16 - Show Intro 00:06:45 - Seattle Recap 00:14:17 - Photo News 00:49:23 - Flying Solo 01:25:51 - Gear of the Week 01:28:38 - Wheel of Fro

Are these the worst wedding photos EVER? RAWtalk 152

E

This week we finally take a look at Todd’s attempt at shooting photos at a wedding. We find out why he was asked in the first place and we learn that he used iPhoto to edit the RAW files. We apologize in advance if you are listening to this as audio only as you won’t get a chance to see the photos until you can watch the video. This weeks show is brought to you by GraphicStock, VideoBlocks and AudioBlocks. It’s simple, try them out if you do any type of video creating. We use something from either one of those services in almost every video we produce. I discussed my Pope Photos along with the Rode VideoMicro as gear of the week and Stephen hits us with some Photo News. Make this one last: RAWtalk 150

E

It might be a good idea to make this weeks show last. The reason being is there will be no show next week as Stephen is out on vacation with his family. He works so hard week in and week out not just on RAWtalk but many aspects of the brand that most don’t get to see. This is a well deserved break and I hope he enjoys it. This weeks show is brought to you by RODE who just announced their smallest ever on camera microphone called the VideoMicro. There no longer is an excuse for terrible audio coming from your camera being that this is priced to sell at $59. It requires no batteries and it has no switches. It’s made well, it’s ready for prime time and if you’re in the market for an inexpensive mic that gets the job done click here. This week we have photo news as always brought to you by Stephen of course with photo news music supplied by AutioBlocks.com/go/fro Gear of the week brought us a product from Turbo Ace that works really really well. And we wrap up the show with the Wheel of FRO. Thank you guys for your continued support week in and week out. We strive to keep the show fun and informative and can not wait to start traveling the world with a nice Mobile RAWtalk setup. Listen for #tags in this weeks show.

Who needs to be in focus anyway: RAWtalk 149

E

Right off the bat we had a little snafu this week. We did not focus the center camera during our pre show check which means we will be cutting around the center angle the entire show. From here on out we will have a nice little checklist to follow before we roll. It looks like we cracked the two hour mark once again. We had a lot of topics to discuss from Avirl being single to Todd shooting a wedding to the sigma 150-600, photo news and more. This weeks show is brought to you by ATOMOS who just released the Atomos Assassin. The assassin is 10% light and 35% more adorable then it’s big brother the shotgun. What I love about it is it has the same 7 inch screen as the shotgun and records 4k straight from the cameras sensor. Where the shotgun is the top of the line for high end cameras as well as DSLR’s, the assassin is the perfect match for DSLR’s and mirrorless cameras. Check out more info right here. Be sure to subscribe on iTunes to get the latest episode sent to you as soon as it goes live.

Mirrorless VS DSLR: RAWtalk 147

E

The Mirrorless VS DSLR debate seems to be heating up as of late. For the last few years people have been championing their switch from DSLR to all different types of Mirrorless Systems. It’s now time for me to start to educate myself on all things Mirrorless so I can share my finds with everyone out there. I am in no way opposed to the emerging technologies but what I am opposed to are the people who are quick to jump ship because the wind is blowing one way. This week I dedicated the entire Flying Solo potation of the show to questions about Mirrorless VS DSLR. My goal was to see what was on your minds as consumers and help to answer as many questions as I could. HOYA is this weeks sponsor. They just announced their new line of HD3 Series of professional filters designed for extreme environmental conditions. They are 4X Stronger than standard optional glass and 800% yes 800% harder than previous generations. They also have the ability to make water bead right off in case you are shooting gin a wet environment. The truth of the matter is, if you are someone who feels the need to add a UV filter to the end of your lens you can not go wrong with this new series. There are far more benefits to using a Hoya HD3 then simply blocking UV. It can cut down on glare which can lead to a sharper better image. It’s easier to clean when it gets dirty because of it’s special coating. It does protect your front element and much more. Check out more information right here. Photo News with Stephen has started to take on a very interesting life of it’s own. Stephen hits us with some really solid news stories this week and Todd and I fill in with some color where needed. Gear of the week plays perfectly into the title of this weeks show where we showcased a few different brands of popular mirrorless cameras. Like I said above, flying solo was dedicated solely to discussing mirrorless technologies and where I think the market is going. We wrapped the show up with the Wheel of FRO so be sure to check out if you were the lucky wheel winner. Thanks to RODE, Atomos, LEXAR (the official card of RAWtalk) and everyone else on the wheel of FRO. Are my eyes RED: RAWtalk 146

E

No my eyes weren’t red but I did fly in on a RED EYE the morning of RAWtalk. I left Vegas on a 12:30 AM flight that got me back into Philly at 8am. EST. From there I had a few meetings to take care of and without sleep it was now time to film the latest episode of RAWtalk. To put it mildly, I was a little tired for the show. This weeks show is brought to you by ATOMOS. Wether we are filming RAWtalk, recording 4k or simply using it as a monitor we LOVE OUR ATOMOS’s. We use the shogun which lets us record 4k out of cameras and lets us record longer than the 20 or 30 min limits of DSLR’s. If you need something that lets you do what I mentioned above please check out Atomos.com. RANT: Shitty house photos that Realtors take that they think will help them sell their houses. GET WITH the times, either learn to take quality images or hire someone who will. Photos news with Stephen this week was not interrupted my me or Todd. If you believe that I have a bridge for sale I would like to sell you. We FLEW Solo as well as spun the Wheel of FRO. Don’t forget that new shows go LIVE every Monday as both audio and full video. Trey Ratcliff aka Mr HDR the interview: RAWtalk 145

E

It’s been a long time in the making and the stars finally aligned to allow me to interview Trey Ratcliff right here in the loft. Trey is one of the most well known photographers online and is most commonly associated with HDR photography (high dynamic range). As man¥ of you know I have been very outspoken about not liking HDR in the past. Most of this stems from seeing really bad HDR. Trey on the other hand does HDR right and tries to share his methods with as many people as possible. No that does not mean I will be doing HDR anytime soon. But you can not deny the success and you have to give major credit where credit is due. Check out the FULL Interview at 33:54 This weeks episode is brought to you by RODE microphones. As you know we use the RODE broadcaster microphones each and every week. RODE not only makes these high end mics but they have other extremely affordable shot gun, condensers, broadcast and even lavalier offerings. If you entered the MyRodeReel.com competition RODE wanted me to let you know to keep an eye on your mailbox for a FREE microphone that will be showing up. How cool is that, not only do they run a free contest but they end up sending every participant a FREE microphone. Announcing the 3rd Annual Allen’s Nikon-A-Palooza taking place on Saturday September 12th from 10:30am - 3:30pm at Allen’s Camera. We can not guarantee that you won’t bust out laughing and disturb the people around you. Gear of the week was our new Masterclick, which is one of the coolest dam clocks I have ever seen. We finished off the show with Wheel of FRO as we also do and want to thank all the sponsors who’s names are up on the board. Oh how I HATE change, but change was needed: RAWtalk 144

E

Let’s start off with what has changed. First you may notice my hair has a more round shaped look. That’s because for the first time in 8 and a half years I sat in the barbers chair and got my hair trimmed. My goal was to give it a nice shape, think basketball aka nice and round. I think e succeeded there though change does not come easy for me. On top of that the crew and I decide to do a “reset” of the RAWtalk angles. We wanted to make the center camera tighter which involved Stephen and I not sitting directly across from each other. We switched up the position for the tables which made room for Todd’s seat and more room all around in general. It may seem like a large change but it really makes a difference in the end product. This weeks show was brought to you by GraphicStock. You have heard us talk about VideoBocks and AudioBlocks but to go along with those two you have GraphicStock. A place where you can get over 250,000 Graphics, images, vectors, icons, buttons and more. Sometimes you need to pull stock images for your videos or design projects so I suggest you check out GraphicStock right here. Photo News brings you the latest news from the prior week in Photography. We discuss it, comment on it and bring light to the most relevant and popular stories in photography. Gear of the week this week came from Canon who sent us their mega zoom Point and Shoot camera to play with. We will take this out of the box and give it a look in the not to distant future. Last week when we spun the Wheel of FRO we did not have any names to choose from so I decided that this week we would select two people from the “Flying Solo” portion. The first person selected won the prize form last week which was something from LEXAR. With one SPIN of the wheel we finally landed on the Grand Prize which was the Atomos Ninja 2 valued at $699.99. I don’t recall which show started the Wheel of FRO with the biggest prize option but after at least 100 shows we finally hit the big one. Thank you guys so much for watching each and every week. Don’t forget that new shows come out each Monday both as Audio and Video for your listening and viewing pleasures. Lexar is the official memory card of RAWtalk. This Dr. literally CUT my eyes out: RAWtalk 143 an interview with my Eye Dr.

E

Eyes, they are so very integral to every day life and even more so when your business revolves around seeing the world and capturing it. Many people don’t know that I was born with an eye condition that causes my eyes to shake which in turn hurts my vision. I have been seeing one of the best eye doctors in the world named Harold P. Koller since I was a small child. In fact he did surgery on me that involved cutting the muscles in my eyes and relocating them into another position. I’ve always wanted to sit down with Dr. Koller for a discussion because I know he can pass along some fantastic information. This interview isn’t just about my eyes, it’s about how you should be taking care of yours. What are the warning signs to look out for to determine if there may be an eye issue and what to do if that happens. Check out the interview at 51:58 to hear out entire discussion. This weeks episode is brought to you by TOKINA. Tokina is a lens manufacture with deep roots into lens manufacturing. They make consumer glass, professional glass as well as super high end optics for the movie industry. I got to hold onto one of their cinematic lenses at NAB this year and all I can say is WOW what a fantastic hunk of glass. They may not have the largest lineup of lenses but the ones they do have are worth a peak. They just released a 24-70 2.8 lens that if you’re tight on cash and need a killer full frame lens this one could be for you. Check it out right here http://bit.ly/1I3AEVt Stephen brings us the weeks “Photo NEWS” each episode where he takes the largest stories around and shares them. Todd is back this week with his commentary and we continue to test out the GoPro Hero4 Session on his angle. Gear of the week this weeks brings us the Tilta by Ikan which is an affordable rig if you are in the market for one. It’s not the cheapest and it’s not the most expensive, it falls right in the middle and may be the right fit for you. BorrowLenses was kind enough to send me out a Canon XC10 to test out, so we discuss that and a few more things. Wheel Of FRO got spun but I honestly didn’t have a name prepared which means I will pick two people for next weeks episode. One will spin the wheel FRESH and the other will win the LEXAR prize from this week. Thanks to everyone out there who continues to support the show including the sponsors on the Wheel of FRO. Why I signed the FOO FIGHTERS Photo Contract: RAWtalk 142

E

Over the past month or so there has been a lot of concern over many larger bands photo contracts. One in particular is the Foo Fighters photo release you must sign before shooting them. Yes the contact is over the top, yes it discusses turning over the copyrights but no it’s not really as big of a deal as you think. What’s going on is people are blowing the release way out of proportion. You have a choice, you can sign it and shoot or you could do neither. It’s no skin off the bands back since you would simply be shooting the same photos as everyone else. What you have to understand is the contract doesn’t say you can’t use the images, it doesn’t say they will take your ownership right from under you. It says they have the ability to do whatever they want with your images if and only if they ever ask you for them. Do you see any spaces on the contract that asks for contact info, NO. So why did I choose to sign the contract? One, I was work for hire, meaning I was getting paid to shoot the photos. Two if someone is paying me to use the photos they need the rights to use the photos. Three, what else would I be doing? Sitting at home wishing I was shooting something opposed to actually putting myself in a position to be successful. I never expected to end up shooting backstage, it just happened. But the truth of the matter is I can not share those images without permission. You know what, I am fine with that right now because I was work for hire. I shouldn’t be able to just share the images without permission in this one case. I want to share them but our agreement said I needed them to sign off on it. The moral of the story is by me going out and shooting, aka doing my job, I may have opened up some very important doors. Am I guaranteed anything further, nope. That’s okay with me because guess what, I already got my foot in the door, I did the work and they LIKED IT, the liked it a lot. This weeks episode is brought to you by ATOMOS. If you are investing in anything 4K and you want to give yourself the ability to select a professional codec, you should check out the shogun. Not only will you be able to record in professional codecs, you have a larger screen, tons of pro functions, better audio and so much more. If you’re not in the market for a 4k camera and simply want an inexpensive way to record longer than 20 or 30 min you should check out the “bare bones” option starting at $395. Check it out right here http://www.atomos.com/ Stephen brings us this weeks photo stories and much much more. While Todd fills his chair and we test out “Todd cam” with the new GoPro Hero4 Session. Gear of the week is my very own I SHOOT RAW ThinkTank Photo Retrospective 30 bag. If you’re in the market for a shoulder bag, this is the one bag you will own for many years to come. It fits everything I need on a shoot and is built to last. You can pick up a bag right here http://bit.ly/rawbag Thank you to all our sponsors and everyone who checks out the show each week. LEXAR is the official card of RAWtalk.

Now with MORE Angles: RAWtalk 141

E

We already have four camera angles so what’s one more. This week we added the “Todd Cam” aka the camera pointed right at his face. We hope you enjoy the added angle. This weeks Plug is brought to you by RODE Microphones. As you know we use their Broadcaster mics each and every week even when we hit up the Grand Canyon. Rode makes mics ranking from simple wired lavs to USB and XLR and microphones for your DSLR. Check them out at RODE.com I have to say I have not laughed so much during a show ever. Adding Todd to the chair has really added a fun spark for Stephen and I and hope you enjoy the added flair as well. Stephen hit’s us with his Photo News Stories which include everything from Photos on Maps to the Foo Fights contract and beyond. This week was another Flying Solo Week. If you are curious how we select questions, this is how we do it. Generally the night before a flying solo show I place a video on Facebook requesting questions be submitted. From those questions I select the ones to be read on the show. One of the people who asked the question may get a chance to spin the Wheel of FRO!!! Thank you again for all your support and don’t forget to subscribe on iTunes. Thank you to all the sponsors including RODE, LEXAR, Atomos, Kenko Tokina and everyone on the Wheel Of Fro. Turning down $100k to chase a dream: RAWtalk 140 LIVE from VideoBlocks HQ

E

We made the 2:45 min trip down south to Reston Virginia to do a LIVE Mobile RAWtalk from the VideoBlocks HQ. Not only did we pack the house but I got to sit down with the founder and CEO of VideoBlocks Joel Holland. If you want to know how one person with an idea can go from living in his parents basement to selling a million DVD’s over the internet check out 33:14. Sitting down with Joel and hearing his story about turning down a six figure job out of college to try and turn and idea into a business was awe-inspiring. This interview should light a fire under everybody’s ass out there. If you want something go after it. This weeks Episode is brought to you by VideoBlocks.com. As you can tell we were LIVE at their HQ and Joel gave a fantastic interview. I really don’t need to sell you on VideoBlocks, it sells itself once you give it a try. To try it out click here. Photo News brings us stories from all around the photo world including the one I created #RespectPhotographers. I called out the LIVE Nation CEO for the companies practice of not paying house photographers and asking for all their rights. We cover that and much more during this weeks Photo News. As we like to do with all Mobile RAWtalks we do a LIVE Flying Solo where I A’ed a bunch of Q’s. These are always fun because I never know what anyone will ask and I have to be on my toes. Finally we brought with us a min Wheel Of FRO to give it a spin and it landed on….. check out 1:48:42 of the show to see where it stopped. A huge thank you to everyone who came out to the mobile RAWtalk and to VideoBlocks for hosting the show. Joel, thank you for crushing the interview with some amazing and motivational stories. 00:00:16 - Show Intro 00:06:24 - Photo News 00:25:25 - Live Nation Story 00:33:14 - Videoblocks CEO & Founder Interview 01:12:28 - "Live" Flying Solo 01:48:42 - Wheel of Fro

Something get's filled :RAWtalk 139

E

It’s generally not easy coming up with titles for RAWtalk Episodes and this week was no exception. So here’s what we had, a seat got filled, I RANTED slightly, we had no main plug, we flew solo and we had a cool gear of the week. If you can pull a title out of all of that please let m know. Photo news this week was filled to the brim once again. If you missed my Rant on the Taylor Swift photo contract you will be filled in this week. Flying solo brought out some great questions as usual so I hope you find some nuggets in my answers. Thank you guys again for your continued support of each weeks episodes. Danny Clinch the Interview: RAWtalk 138

E

For the past 7 years I have been trying to track down Danny Clinch. Well, I finally had the chance to sit down with him for a very intimate interview recorded at his NYC studio. For those who don’t know Danny, let me just say he has defined music lifestyle and advertising photos over the past 20+ years. He is more than just a “music” photographer, he is a photographer who captures and shares images that tell stories. There are sometimes interviews where I need to talk a lot, this was not one of them. I was able to ask a question, sit back and listen to Danny share his entire world with us. Listen to how he got started. Listen to the dues he paid a long the way. And listen to how he continues to evolve time and time again to stay relevant in an ever changing world. This my friends, is a REAL RAWtalk, nothing was held back, nothing was glossed over, nothing was said with kid gloves. You can pick up a signed copy of “Still Moving” right here. http://dannyclinch.bigcartel.com/product/still-moving-book This weeks show PLUG was courtesy of AudioBlocks, VideoBlocks and GraphicStock. They have been a major partner over the past six months who have afforded us the ability to take our shows and videos to another level. On top of that they offer an amazing top notch service that we have been using for the past few years. Give their services a try, if you are a creator, the tools they have with make your content that much better. Get your trials right here. AudioBlocks.com/go/fro VideoBlocks.com/go/fro GraphicStock.com/go/fro This week we say goodbye to Sutter as he has become increasingly more busy with his own personal work and no longer will be able to join us each week. A BIG thank you for his work over the past year and good luck on your Alaskan adventure. Stephen hits us with 10, count them 10 photo news stories. As a note about this weeks show, we filmed four days earlier than normal since Stephen was headed on vacation for most of the week. Any major stories that were not mentioned this week will be included in the next episode. Be sure to subscribe for the podcast on iTunes so you can be noticed as soon as the episode goes live. SONY is making major MOVES: RAWtalk 137

E

This was a big week for Photo News with most of it centered around SONY announcing some new cameras that are sure to shake up the photo industry. What SONY has done is spent the last decade or so carving out their niche. I get asked all the time why I don’t like “mirror less” cameras. I don’t dislike them I just don’t think they are there yet. Do you notice what is going on with the new Sony A7, the grip has gotten larger, the buttons have shifted and it’s taking on a large feel. What you’re going to see is the best of both worlds come together in the next 10 years. ATOMOS ATOMOS ATOMOS, this weeks sponsor is Atomos and they were featuring the “Action Pack”. Check out more information about it right here. http://atomos.com/ . We use the Atomos each week when we are in the studio. It allows us to take just about any DSLR and via HDMI get a clean signal out allowing for recordings longer than what a normal DSLR will give you. You have to check them out if you haven’t done so yet. This week we brought something new out for the show and it’s also our gear of the week. We used the Redrock Micro “One Man Crew” director. You have to check this thing out if you are a one man band looking to add some motion into your videos. http://store.redrockmicro.com/OneManCrew.html We had a few weeks off from Flying Solo so this week we brought it back to answer your questions followed by the Wheel Of FRO. Is Wedding Photography a DEAD business? Cliff Mautner Interview: RAWtalk 136

E

I had the chance to have arguably one of the best Wedding Photographers in the world Cliff Mautner into the loft for a little sit-down discussion. Cliff does not hold back on his thoughts on the current state of wedding photography or anything else for that matter. But what I love about the interview is it’s no BS. It’s honest, it’s to the point and it’s filled with solid gold nuggets of information that you can cash and take to the bank. Don’t let our discussion dissuade you from going after weddings. Let it be a guide to help you navigate the sometimes turbulent waters of wedding photography and not let you get sunk. Heed the warnings, take them to heart, learn from them and you will find your way to the other side. http://www.cmphotography.com/ PLUG TIME: This weeks sponsor is RODE Microphone, we absolutely love our Rode Broadcasters which CRUSHED I mean CRUSHED it while out at the Grand Canyon. Do you remember the MyRodeReel.com competition where you could enter to WIN over $200,000 in prizes? Well all the submissions are in and it’s your turn to VOTE and check out all the submissions RIGHT HERE http://www.rode.com/myrodereel Stephen loaded up on Photo News this week, gear of the week brought us a bag from MindShift Gear and we SPUN the Wheel of FRO twice. The winners are Mike Hall (RODE mic) and Kaleb Autman (Fro Guides) Thank you for your continued support and don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast on iTunes so you can get notified of as soon as new episodes go LIVE on Monday’s.

LIVE from the GRAND CANYON, yes it's REAL - RAWtalk Episode #135

E

WARNING: this is a very visual episode that I highly suggest you watch the video if you can!!! No that was not a massive green screen, we were truly filming RAWtalk on the edge of the Grand Canyon thanks to AdventureDriven.com. Can you believe how amazing it looks. We filmed this weeks show with two Canon C300’s, a 5D Mark III, GoPro and DJI Phantom 3 PRO for the arial shots. This weeks sponsor so happens to be a LIFE SAVER for shooting landscape photos. HOYA supplied me with all the filters I needed to help make my pictures go BOOOOOOMMMM at the Grand Canyon. Having their circular polarizers on my lenses helped pump up the sky as well as the color in my images. Just think how amazing the world looks when you where polarized sunglasses. Now add that in front of your camera lenses and you have fantastically vibrant photos. Here is a link to the exact CP I used form HOYA http://www.hoyafilter.com/hoya/products/hdfilters/hdfiltercirpl/ As you can tell this weeks show took us to an amazing place. We had to change up the show slightly for obvious reasons but we cranked through photo news which included two main but very long stories. One involves Anthony Mazur a 16 year old High School student and the other Richard Prince who took peoples Instagram Photos and sold them for upwards of $100,000. You can check out the FULL Photo News Stories and more at FroKnowsPhoto.com/rawtalk-135 We had a ton of gear out with us but this weeks Gear of the Week was the Hoya Filters and step down rings which were a life saver. Also JOBY sent us car mounts for our GoPro’s which turned out to be freaking amazing. We had them attached to our vehicles in so many situations and they handled the harsh environment with flying colors. If there is an amazing place you would like to help bring RAWtalk please feel free to email me directly at Jared AT FroKnowsPhoto.com with all the information.

How to Ruin a 94k Lens and much more: RAWtalk 134

E

Let’s start off with the title story from Photo News where a rugby player decided after scoring to take out a sharpie and sign the camera persons lens. If there was a filter on the lens than it wouldn’t be such a big deal. Since there wasn’t, that just might cost someone a lot of money. You can hear the full story at 09:51. What would have saved that cameras lens would have been pretty much any filter from HOYA. And if it were the EVO filter by HOYA the sharpie would not have left a mark and would have been able to be wiped right off without any issue. We picked up a bunch of HOYA filters to take to the Grand Canyon. We have everything from ND to Polarizers and everything else in-between. To learn more about this weeks sponsor please click here http://bit.ly/1Sx6lOB Photo news was extra packed this week with stories ranging from that sharpie one to new Apple Computer products to a freaking DOG mount from Nikon. Be sure to check out the full photo news stories and more starting at 09:21 Last weeks show brought us situational questions for "Flying Solo” and since they were so good I decided to try it one more time. Take a close listen as you might find yourself in the same situation as the people asking questions. Don’t miss gear of the week as well as the Wheel of FRO to see if you are the lucky person who got to spin it. ***PSA for next weeks show*** Next weeks show will be released at least a day late. As soon as it’s ready we will have it up and LIVE for you all to enjoy. In the meantime go back and listen to some older episodes that you may have missed.

That's just GROSS, consider yourself WARNED: RAWtalk 133

E

It’s not often I am grossed out by a story but this one really left me scatting my head. Honestly the story and the photo’s in my opinion are so gross that I can’t talk about it anymore. To see the story I am taking about skip to 27:48. Consider yourself warned. This weeks Episode is brought to you by the fine people at AudioBlocks and VideoBlocks. If you want to know where all the menstrual flow music came from this week you can find yours at AudioBlocks.com/go/fro . My team has been using both AudioBlocks and VideoBlocks for the past two years and we love it. Please give it a try if you have a need for royalty FREE audio or video and I know you will not be disappointed in the service. Photo News got a little heated this week with stories ranging from the new Canon 50 1.8 to a wedding photographer calling out one of his brides than saying he was hacked to flowing blood photos. Give the Photo News a listen and enjoy. I put out the request for “Situational” type of questions to be sent in to change up Flying Solo. I must say the situations that you guys brought up were fantastic and made for some highly entertaining and informative answers. Don’t forget that new RAWtalks come out every Monday and if you subscribe on iTunes you have the ability to auto download all new episodes so they are waiting for you.

"On Fleek": RAWtalk 132

E

Before I jump into this weeks show I want to dedicate it to Allen from Allen’s camera who passed away last night at the store. Allen was there for me at the beginning and was one of the main catalysts to the early success of FroKnowsPhoto.com. What does “On Fleek” mean? Honestly it’s a made up term that if you look up on YouTube you just might find yourself laughing. This weeks episode is sponsored by ATOMOS http://bit.ly/froatomos who has been extremely supportive of the site and the show since way early on. If you are looking to pick up a Sony A7s to shoot 4k video you will also need an Atomos Shogun. The great thing is if you purchase both of them (doesn’t have to be at the same time) you will get a $500 rebate. Check out the new Atomos Power Station as well as the Barebones units which are priced to sell!!!!! During Stepgens photo news I may or may not have interrupted or broken into song, but you will find out shortly. Flying solo was back once again with more solid questions along with gear of the week and the Wheel of the FRO. Thank you guys very much for your continued support and don’t forget to watch or listen to RAWtalk every Monday.

Did I really give Stephen that as a gift? YUP: RAWtalk 131

E

I want to start off and say we filmed this weeks RAWtalk on Thursday afternoon and it wasn’t until Friday that we found out that Allen from Allen’s Camera had passed away. I will be having a special segment dedicated to Allen on the next episode. Some of you know I ordered two apple watches for a project idea that I have been working on. The plan was to do my project and return the watches within the first 14 days. It turns out that I am really enjoying the watch so I decided to keep one. That left me the Apple Watch Sport to return or keep. I decided to gift it to Stephen for all his hard work over the last two years. RODE RODE RODE RODE MyRodeReel.com competition is still in full effect and you have a chance to enter any of the 19 categories for your chance to win some of the $200,000 in prizes. There is even a category for movies captured entirely on a cell phone. So honestly you have nothing to lose, read up on the rules right here for your chance to WIN. http://bit.ly/1dGHzeU I decided to strap GoPro Hero 4 to my hockey helmet when I played in a charity tournament this weekend. I must say the footage looks fantastic and I am looking forward to cutting it up for everyone to see. Stephen added a clip for you guys to watch during this weeks show. As always we have Photo News with Stephen followed by another solid round of Flying Solo where you get to submit your questions to be answered on the show. For those who don’t know, NEW episodes of RAWtalk go live on Mondays and you can find the full photo news stories and more at FroKnowsPhoto.com/rawtalk-131

You guys delivered the fire and Flew Solo: RAWtalk 130

E

It’s not every week that I get over 350 Flying Solo questions but this week you guys delivered. I must say there were so many great questions that I chose a few extra to squeeze in as many answers as I could. The truth will be told during this weeks episode. I want us all to welcome a NEW sponsor this week, Kenko / Tokina http://www.kenkotokinausa.com/tokina/ . I am almost positive you guys all have heard of Tokina and the lenses that they make for stills and video. But they also work with a company named Hoya who makes all different types of filters. Please take a look around their site and see what they offer as they support the show and I support them. Stephen brought us the photo news this week with stories that range from the strange to the funny and informative. Be sure to check out the full photo news stories and more. Do you like Photo Books? Have you ever made a real deal photo book? If not I highly recommend using the code “pxfro35md” before May 16th to get 35% OFF your order of Photo Books at AdoramaPix.com . Please enjoy the show and don’t forget that new episodes arrive on Mondays.

To "post or not post" your Prices, that's the question: RAWtalk #128

E

There is an ongoing debate wether or not you should post your wedding package and portrait pricing on your website. I have said it before I am not a big fan of making definitive statements but this is the one of the few times I will say I would not post my prices online. Now I would consider putting a packages "starting" at price but not all of your prices. The way I look at it is I want people to contact me for the chance to "make the sale'. If they look at my prices and see that I am just out of their budget they may move on. Where as if I spoke to them on the phone I would have had a better chance of either giving them a discount or working something out. Of course it's totally up to you to decide what you would like to do for your business. That's the great thing about what we do is there is no right or wrong way, you go with what feels right and works best for you. As you guys know we have been using the Atomos Shogun for the last few weeks. This is the latest and greatest Atomos with its huge 7 inch touch screen and ability to record 4k footage. Of course you need to have a camera that does 4k but even if you don't have one yet you can take full advantage of the 1080 ability. I personally want to thank Atomos for their continued support and want you guys to know that without sponsors like them footing the production costs we would not be able to bring you RAWtalk each and every week. YouTube has started the process to possibly charge a monthly subscription fee to allow viewers to watch Ad free videos. Would you pay for this ability? If so how much? Stephen hits us with a TON of photo news this week and I wrap up the show with "Flying Solo" and the "Wheel Of FRO". 00:00:01 - Show Intro 00:07:15 - Would you pay Youtube to have no ads? 00:10:20 - Why you shouldn't put your prices online? 00:15:37 - Photo News 00:58:40 - Flying Solo 01:42:50 - Wheel of Fro

You know you’re in for a treat when my dad joins me on the show. You never know what direction our conversation will go. This week I got back my Ancestry.com DNA results and I don’t know about you but I expect a hell of a lot more information and so did my dad. Check out that interview at 1:07:05 Do you want a chance to win some of the $200,000 in prizes just for making a video in the MyRodeReel.com http://bit.ly/1IYHITB well go check out the rules because you still have time to enter. They have also created some really informative videos to learn from. I explain what I was doing in San Fran and why I ate BABY SQUID RAW. As well as go into more detail about the most recent 5 Min Portrait using the Nikon D5500 and Kit 18-140. For those who don’t know the story of Passover I went ahead and retold the entire story in roughly 2 minutes. Killer Tips for making $$$ shooting weddings: RAWtalk #126

E

Welcome back to another WEEK of RAWtalk which so happens to top the two hour mark once again. Did you know that Facebook mobile automatically corrects your image when you post it? Yup, they do, but you can turn that function off which I highly recommend doing. Go into your mobile settings and turn off the option for auto correcting images that you publish via mobile. You get to see the new I SHOOT RAW t-shirt commercial for the 8-bit “DOOM” shirt. There were a ton of Flying Solo questions this week with many of them asking me to discuss shooting weddings. I don’t think I have shared so much info on how to market for and shoot weddings ever. If you want to shoot weddings and command a higher than average price you may want to check this weeks show out. We didn’t spin the Wheel of FRO once this week, we didn’t spin it twice, we spun it THREE TIMES!!!! Did you get to spin it? Gear of the week showed us the Kessler Crane and the Aputure 7 inch field monitor that comes in at only $219. Thank you for watching or listening to this weeks show, without you guys the show would not be possible.

LIVE from Chicago it's RAWtalk #125

E

Last week we invaded Chicago for a sold out Mobile RAWtalk at Stage 773!!! A big thank you to everyone who purchased a ticket as well as to Squarespace who sponsored this Mobile RAWtalk. Without the support of Squarespace we wouldn’t be able to take RAWtalk on the road. If you have not tried Squarespace I suggest you give it a try. It is what I personally use for JaredPolin.com. To get a FREE 14 day trial please go to Squarespace.com/fro if you decide it’s for you please use code FRO to get 10% OFF your first month or year. I have to tell you that this show felt like the funniest show we have done to date. I don’t know if it was the combo of the sold out crowd or it was the one drink I had but it was funny. Why did we shoot on ALL Canon's this week? RAWtalk #124

E

Can you tell what is different this week? If you are watching the video playback you will see that we are not at the RAWtalk table. The reason being is I have been filming for the last 7 days the next video guide, the FroKnowsPhoto Guide to Video Editing. The crew would leave each night and all the gear would stay in place. The set was set along with the lights and Canon cameras so all we needed to do was turn the cameras on and shoot. Before I jump into telling you about the interview with Todd Wolfe this week I have to tell you we had some slight technical issues. It tuns out for whatever reason the ZOOM gave us a corrupt audio file from that interview. The strange thing is we filmed the interview first before filming the main intro with Stephen. Thankfully that audio was fine but I have to apologize for the camera audio that we used for Todds portion of the show. I guess the silver lining is that fact that you can hear how important quality sound is and why we use the RODE Broadcaster microphones. This weeks show was sponsored by AudioBlocks.com/go/fro and VideoBlocks.com/go/fro . We have been doing a lot of DSLR video coverage since so many people have been venturing into it. AudioBlocks and VideoBlocks are pretty much a must have for content creators and video editors. Todd, Stephen and I have been utilizing their service for the last few years and have recently work out a sponsorship agreement. If you are interested in checking out their service you can sign up for their 7 day trial which does require a credit card. Here is the trick, before the trial ends and they charge you full price for the service cancel it. They will send you an e mail offering it to you for only $99 a year opposed to $79 a month. Enjoy the show and sorry for the poor audio. Intro: 00:00:16 Photo News: 00:11:17 Todd Wolfe Interview / Editing Guide Discussion: 00:51:01 Gear of the Week: 01:16:01

KICKSTARTER FAIL: Apparently it's RAWtalk #123

E

Welcome to Episode #123 of FroKnowsPhoto RAWtalk. This week I started off the show with a look back at a video I recorded somewhere around 2008. It showcases me attempting to make a video but failing every which way I tried. The reason I posted the video is to show you that I have not always been this good in front of the camera. And if I can go from that guy sitting there fumbling words with no personality than there should be nothing holding you back. This weeks PLUGGY Mc Plugerson is brought to you by ATOMOS who sent us out the brand spanking new Shogun to sniff test and play with. For those who don’t know about the Shogun it’s pretty much the only way you can currently record 4k footage out of the cameras on the market. For example the Sony A7s can’t even record 4k internally, it needs the Shogun to save that footage. For more information on the Shogun and other Atomos products please click here http://bit.ly/1waSi9t We are off to Chicago for a Mobile RAWtalk curiosity of Squarespace on March 17th. If you would like to pick up a ticket for that show you can do so right here. http://bit.ly/1NyGa7V Stephen graces us with his photo news that brings up the subject of the failed “trigger trap” kickstarted. It’s time to lay the smack down on kickstarted so I guess you could call this a mini rant. Flying Solo this week was filled with a ton of solid questions that I hope you find informative. Finally if you listen to RAWtalk on iTunes could you please leave a review as well as your start ranking? That will help the show grow on iTunes and show up ahead of those other boring podcasts. 00:00:16 - Intro 00:00:45 - RANT: If Jared can do it YOU can do it 00:08:11 - Gear of the Week: Atomos Shogun 00:14:19 - Chicago RAWtalk 00:21:45 - Please Rate RAWtalk on iTunes 00:22:15 - Photo News 00:38:26 - RANT: Jared on Kickstarter 00:56:16 - Flying Solo 00:58:40 - Sutter Kindergarden Flashback 01:37:47 - Wheel of Fro

An interview with a Photographer who has more Sports Illustrated covers than me : RAWtalk 122

E

This week I sat down with former Sports Illustrated staff photographer Al Tielemans. I first met Al when I was 17 or 18 where we shot together in the dugout of Veteran stadium for a Phillies game. I invited Al in because he is one of the best sports photographers of our time and I know he would be able to shed some light on the industry for us all. If there is one thing I took out of this interview it’s a statement that Al made about “practice”. He mentioned during his off days form assignments he would go out and shoot to keep his skills tight. You can not become a better photographer if you don’t get out there and shoot. This is How Much YouTubers Make: RAWtalk 121

E

One of the biggest mysteries on the internet is “How much do YouTubers make?”. Well, I am one of those YouTubers so I share what I know to try and shed some light on this age old question. Be sure to check out the 47:58 mark and find out the answer to the question. The whole reason I bring up YouTubers and how much they make is there was a change of the terms of services for what YouTubers can promote in their videos. This change is going to effect some of the biggest names on YouTube and as of now the new rules are pretty vague. I took a look at these new terms of service to try and decipher what you can and can’t do. Did you see Inspector Dale Cooper aka Stephen Sutters Hedgehog? Isn’t he so cute with he pricklers and cute face? I asked Jaleel King to stop back into the loft to update us on what he has been up to over the past few years and what the next year has in store. If you missed the first time Jaleel was on you can check it out right here on Episode #18 http://froknowsphoto.com/rawtalk-18-bumping-wheelchairs/ PLUG ALERT. If you make videos online than you know how important quality royalty free music is. If you have been looking for a solution I have one in the way of AudioBlocks.com/go/fro which you can get for $99 for one year. Todd has been using them for the last two years and I have been a paying customer since early 2014. The RANT that had to be CUT: RAWtalk Episode #120

E

The plan for this weeks show was to have on a special guest who ended up having to cancel last minute. Of course this tends to happen and is out of all our control when their child is running a fever, it's also totally understandable. Alas the show must go on and it ended up being another fantastic show packed with great photo news, random discussion, DVDA and Flying Solo. This weeks pluggy mc plugerson was brought to you by ATOMOS. The NEW Atomos Showgun has sliced its way into filmmakers bags and soon will land on my doorstep. If you are looking to record 4k video into something THIS IS THE DEVICE that does it. Not only can you record 4k from the Sony A7II but with pretty much all DSLRS you can record full 1080 up to 60 FPS. All I can say is we use the Atomos Ninja Blade as our main center angle recording device. Everyone always asks how do you get longer recording than what the DSLRs allow us to do? The simple answer is get an ATOMOS. Thank you to Atomos for being supportive of our show for the last year+. Please enjoy this weeks show and don't forget subscribe to the podcast on itunes.

The TRUTH about making money on the Internet

E

Last month I gave a completely uncensored talk at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg campus. I spoke to a group of students in a creative thinking and business entrepreneurial class... I told the group we could talk about whatever they want and I would literally tell them anything about me and my business. Naturally how I make money in my business was a big topic during this 1.5 hour talk but there's a lot of great information and the students asked some great questions. This was a completely open and candid discussion and I pulled the curtain back on my business, answering EVERY single question they had. This is the only way I know how to be, completely open and honest. I have nothing to hide and want to share everything I know to help as many people as possible. You need to know there are no secrets to being successful. Sometimes you get lucky but I firmly believe that you make your own luck. I know this is a long video but if you take just one nugget of information and do something with it than it was well worth while. You have nothing to lose, go for it, make it happen. To see the VIDEO please go here. http://froknowsphoto.com/the-truth-about-making-money-on-the-internet/

Is Canon Back in the game? RAWtalk 119

E

The huge news this week centers around Canon releasing not one not two but four new DSLR’s and an Ultra WIDE zoom pro lens. Does this put Canon back in the game or were they ever really out of it? I personally don’t think Canon was anywhere near out of the game. They have the 5D Mark III along with the 1D X as well as a lot of adapted professional lenses. This is what happens in the photo world, Nikon has something new for a while then Canon has something new so on and so forth. So one or the other is always on top for a period of time. As a little side note, at the time of recording we did not have all the official specs. But I chose to discuss the camera after my inside source was able to verify the validity of information that was out there as fact. I tried something new for Flying Solo where I put up a video on Facebook asking for your flying solo questions. It looked like it worked because over 200 questions came in which is more than double what we usually get. I chose 30 of the questions to feature on the show and moved at a pretty brisk pace to make sure I got to them all. This weeks show was sponsored by RODE Microphone. As you know we use the RODE broadcaster Mics both in the loft and on the road. They sound fantastic and I think we have one of the best sounding Podcasts around because of them. Remember if you don’t check out RODE’s site this week our friend Scott over there’s son may grow up to have blonde hair!!!! Scott Kelby UNLEASHED and Uncensored: RAWtalk 118

E

Scott Kelby is not only one of the biggest names in online education but he has written over 60 books and sold millions of copies over the 15 years. As many of you know I was asked by Scott to come down and be on his show the GRID. While there I took the oppurtunity to sit down and conduct a very candid interview. The interview took place in Scotts office which is part of a brand new facility that Kebly Media has just moved into. This was an unbelivable facility housing studio after studio of recording spaces as well as 91 employees. When I conduct interviews I don’t come up with questions based on what I think people may want to hear, I ask questions based off of what I am most interested in hearing. In the case of this interview with Scott I was most interested in where he started and how he built the business to such a place. There is one part of the interview where he talks about the “moment” that one decision that set the ball rolling to allow him to be sitting where he is right now. And i must tell you I had shivers go down my spine when he told the story. You can hear and see the passion throughout this 40 minute interview. When we finished Scott told me the questions I was asking were not what he was expecting but in a good way. That is what I love to hear after an interview, that the questions were unique and brought out the best stories possible. Enjoy this interview and learn as much as you can from it. The interview starts at 52 min. As always we have Photo News with Stephen along with fantastic discussions leading up to the interview above. Gear of the Week this week was the Sennheiser Lav Packs that were are testing out and probably replacing the Sony’s that have served me well. Don’t forget Wheel of FRO and all the companies who are on it, thank you. This FREE Show is only possible because of the select few sponsors we choose to work with and who choose to work with us. Thank you to RODE, ATOMOS, Squarespace, AllensCamera.com, VideoBlocks and everyone around the Wheel Of FRO. Without them there the show would not look like it looks today. So please take a minute to check out what these sponsors have to offer and thank them for allowing us to create this show. LIVE from USFSP in Florida it's Mobile RAWtalk Episode #117

E

Coming to you LIVE…. (to tape) from the University of South Florida St. Pete it’s another Mobile RAWtalk. That’s right, we were in Florida for the latest RAWtalk because I was invited onto the GRID by Scott Kelby. A HUGE thank you goes out to Nathan for helping set up everything on the campus and to Sam Hamberg for helping rest the cameras and more during RAWtalk. This weeks Episode is Sponsored by ATOMOS. We used the Atomos Ninja II to record for over an hour and a half without having to rest the camera. That right there is worth the price of admission. You know how you are limited to only 29:59 of record time on most DSLR’s? The way around that is to use an ATOMOS which not only lets you record none stop but gives you an even higher quality video to work with than the camera itself. Atomos has units that fit in the pocket to the latest and greatest the SHOGUN which will record 4K, for more winning!!! For more info please check out Atomos.com There was a RANT, fun with the people in attendance, laughing, crying, earmuffs and who brings their toddler to one of my shows? Stephen has his photo news and we still spun the WHEEL OF FRO. Be sure to follow me on Snapchat at FroKnowsPhoto. Don’t forget to subscribe to the Podcast on iTunes to be the first to get each and every new episode. Enjoy the show.

Your Marketing, Branding and Business Questions CRUSHED: RAWtalk Episode #116

E

This week show takes us back into the LOFT for the second show of the year. I honestly never know what direction the show will go when we hit record but this week took a turn into Business territory that you will not want to miss. Before I dive deeper into the show I want to thank RODE for being this weeks featured sponsor. They just released a new accessory for the SmartLav and + called the SC1. The SC1 is a 20 foot extension cable which will really come in handy when you need to stay behind the camera and monitor audio. Be sure to check out everything RODE right here http://bit.ly/1IYHITB We discussed the killer video Stephen whipped together from CES that left me wanting to watch even more. We outlined why I am going to Florida and where the next mobile RAWtalk is going to be on Tuesday January 20th. If you are on SnapChat be sure to add me as a friend “FroKnowsPhoto”. Flying solo this week has to be one of the most candid discussions I have had to date about business, marketing and branding on a RAWtalk. I let you in on how I advertise on Facebook, what I target, how much I spend and the reasons for doing so. Generally I don’t want the show to go almost two hours but the amount of solid questions this week lead us down that path. In all honesty you don’t have to be a photographer to learn something about business, branding and marketing from this weeks Episode. I spent a good amount of time discussing Audio and Video Blocks a service that I have been paying for for almost two years now. People have been wanting to know where do we get royalty FREE audio and video to use in our videos. The answer is simple we use Audio Blocks and Video Blocks. You can get a 7 day free trial by going here http://audioblocks.com/go/fro for Audio Blocks and Here http://videoblocks.com/go/fro for Video Blocks. Both services go for $79 a month but if you sign up for the FREE trial than cancel your subscription they will send you an e mail with an offer for $99 a year for either service. That’s exactly what I did when I signed up.

LIVE From my Hotel Room in Las Vegas: RAWtalk Episode #115

E

Welcome to Episode #115 which so happens to be the very first one of 2015. The reason I went out to Vegas this time was for CES 2015 which is one of the largest tech shows in the world. I figured we are here we might as well set up a mobile RAWtalk and invite some readers. But the question became where would we film it? I thought it would be fun to invite a handful of readers to join us in our hotel room at the Excalibur. I got an e mail from a reader asking me to promote is gofundme campaign because he just had all his gear stolen out of his car. I get these e mails all the time and asked two simple questions. One did you have insurance and two did use lens tag for your gear. The answers to both were not that they are always very careful with their gear. Look, gofundme is not a place for you to basically ask friends, family or strangers to act as your insurance plan. I feel bad for the person for having their gear stolen but they are partly to blame for not having insurance. CES 2015 was packed with a couple hundred thousand people and Stephen and I braved the crowds to bring you guys what we think are the coolest and strangest items from the show. We give you our recap as well as our run in with Kazamm. After Photo News I opened up the hotel room floor to the fro readers in attendance to ask Flying Solo questions. A big thank you to Squarespace who allows for Mobile RAWtalks to actually happen. They foot the bill for the travel and other expenses that surround filming and production. Please help me by checking out Squarespace.com/fro and signing up for a FREE 14 day Trial of the service. Don’t forget to subscribe across the board to be notified of NEW episodes. This is the LAST RAWtalk....of the year: Episode #114

E

It’s that time of year again, by that time of the year I mean the end of the year. This is officially the last episode of 2014 and I know some of you may be upset but it’s only for a few weeks. This week we have Christmas followed by Stephen going away for the end of the year and than we head to Vegas for CES. We know how much you guys love waking up every Monday to a new RAWtalk but we will be back very soon with new episodes in 2015. Show days can be interesting days depending on which side of the bed I woke up on. I have those mood things, the ones where you can be down or you can be up but on show days the show must go on. I think this week I was a little thrown off by my gmail not working properly which turned out to be an issue with Gmail and not with my e mail which was a relief. Regardless of my mood, once we get into the flow of the show I am ready to go which ever way the news and questions take us. Speaking of Photo News am I wrong with my little rant on the mini Teleprompter kickstarted? I got to fly solo one more time to end 2014 with some challenge questions and others infuriating but that comes with the territory. The NEW Wheel Of FRO got one more SPIN to take us out on a high note with a nice prize as always. What a cool addition to RAWtalk the Wheel Of FRO has become. To finish the year I want to thank each and every one of you who enjoy RAWtalk every week. Wether you watch it on YouTube, your TV, listen to the audio podcast or enjoy it any other way, THANK YOU. Thank you to Stephen for coming on board this year and taking RAWtalk to the level of quaintly it has attained. Thank you to Sutter for taking on a little sidekick ROLL over the last six or so months. And finally thank you to RODE and Atomos for believing in the importance of organic advertising. Having you guys understand the importance of letting me have fun with your plugs makes the readers and listeners more apt to listen to our message. Happy Holidays and have a Happy and Healthy New Years from all of us here at FroKnowsPhoto. By all of us I mean the Stephens and I.

David Bergman gets the ACCESS we all wish for: RAWtalk 113

E

He has shot 13 Sports Illustrated covers, 11 Super Bowls, World Series’s, Presidents and 200 shows in 30 countries with John Bon Jovi. David Bergman has earned the access he receives with amazing photos time and time again. I had the chance to sit with David at the loft to discuss everything from what it’s like to get an SI cover to flying in a private jet as Bon Jovi’s tour photographer. That interview starts at 50:18 second and in my opinion is another fantastic discussion with an amazing photographer. His stories along with his advice are enjoyable and really worth a listen. If you have been waiting to see who WON the Atomos Ninja Star contest you can see the 7 finalists right here. http://froknowsphoto.com/atomos-ninja-star-contest-finalists/ We discus our upcoming Vegas trip and if you are in Vegas and know of a location for a RAWtalk or work for Excalibur please e mail me at jared at froknowsphoto dot com. Stephen hit’s us with the weeks Photo News which you can find starting at 13:34 Finally we did something new this week with the Wheel Of FRO where I selected 12 names and placed them on the smaller wheel. I gave it a spin and the persons name it stopped on got to SPIN the BIG WHEEL!!!! A big thank you goes out to Atomos because without them we wouldn’t be able to record continuously with a DSLR that only lets us shoot 20 minutes at a time. Thank you to RODE, Squarespace, Allens Camera and everyone else who has a spot on the Wheel Of FRO.

RANT Ken Rockwell says "pros only shoot in Pro mode, that's why it's called Pro mode - RAWtalk #112

E

Welcome back to another fun filled week of FroKnowsPhoto RAWtalk where I occasionally curse, scream, sing, rant and talk photography. This week I did not plan on ranting I only planned on sharing a few direct quotes from a certain someones website. Now I know you are asking yourself why do you read that guys site and my answer is because I want to see what he will say next. Now that that’s out of the way what did he say this time? First there was a quote about a camera being free but it costs $1,250 followed by “some people have this idea that pros only shoot in manual exposure mode”. All I can say is skip to 36:48 put your earmuffs on and get ready to be frustrated. This weeks show sponsor was RODE microphone and I featured their Invisilav which honestly will come in handy when I need to put a lav mic under my shirt. The truth of the matter is we currently just use gaff tape to stick the mics to my chest. In reality we should be using the invisilav which we are going to start doing. You will notice I had a little bit of trouble getting the included tape to stick and I have verified that it’s because it’s skin safe. My solution to this is use wig tape or gaff tape and you will be good to go. Stephen brings us the last two weeks in photo news from the new Sony A7 II to the rumor of GoPro manufacturing their own drones. Check out the photo news starting at 08:05 . Don’t forget to subscribe to the Podcast on iTunes or your iPhone to automatically have the new episodes sent right to your phone.

Fro's Favorite Things 2014 Special RAWtalk

E

Normally we record RAWtalks on Thursdays but this week it was Thanksgiving so we recorded something a little different on Monday. In honor of the holidays we decided to record a show called "Fro's Favorite Things". The Stephens and I decided to bring in and discuss different low cost items and some higher cost items that help us with our photography. We have everything from small camera phone stands to the updesk and everything in-between. I want to make it perfectly clear that no companies knew beforehand that we were featuring their products. There are no sponsors of this weeks episode. Listed below are all the items we discussed. If one of them interests you simply google what it is to find more information or where to purchase from. For a full list of all the items we discussded in this weeks Episode please follow this link. http://froknowsphoto.com/frosfavoritethings/ ‎
