BONUS 001 - Gigi: Proof of Work - Part 1
bonus
Hello and welcome to this BONUS episode of the Free Cities Podcast.

These episodes are only available to our subscribers on Fountain.fm, and I'll be dropping them during the weeks when the regular release episode is one that subscribers have already had early access to.

.

If you're not on Fountain, you can access the episode here:

https://fountain.fm/episode/dC5YtEIodvAuYj0gYsTp

.

A little background behind the episode: this is part one of two separate conversations I had with the Bitcoin OG Gigi, which—sadly, until now—have never actually been heard by anyone other than him and me. Back in the summer of 2021, I was working on a personal film project with the Australian filmmaker Richard James. On my part, this involved conducting a series of interviews with prominent Bitcoiners discussing the subject of proof of work, which was also to be the name of the film. Back then, as now, I believed that understanding proof of work was key to greater acceptance of Bitcoin in the mainstream world, particularly with regard to energy consumption, which was certainly a hot topic at the time. How things have changed.

Anyway, understanding proof of work is probably one of the harder aspects of Bitcoin to wrap your head around. And since I consider Gigi to be one of the key people on this subject, I was incredibly grateful to end up recording for nearly four hours with him. The conversation ventures into many different parts of the Bitcoin rabbit hole, including (in part two) some fascinating discussion about the spiritual aspects of Bitcoin’s emergence and Gigi’s personal story of discovery and transformation, which is just incredible.

Now, bear in mind: this conversation often falls into a question-and-answer format, which isn’t my preferred way of talking (as you probably know from listening to the podcast), though it works well for film interviews. Speaking over the internet brought its own problems, too. You'll hear Gigi’s connection cut out no less than four times during the discussion. I tried to edit the interruptions out, but often it’s better to just leave them in to preserve the true flow of the conversation.

Anyway, long story short: this film project fell foul of the so-called pandemic, which was still (kind of) raging in the background at the time of recording. I ended up closing my office and going abroad with my family to escape the draconian measures the UK was experiencing at the time. As a result, this interview—plus many more with the likes of Nic Carter, Brandon Quittem, Max Hillebrand, Tomer Strolight, Knut Svanholm, Harry Sudock (to name just a few)—have all sat idle on a hard drive for the last four years.

Now, I hate seeing things go to waste, so I figured this might be the perfect place to finally publish these conversations. You’ll discover tons of signal here, of course, but what I found especially fascinating was observing just how much things have changed since these discussions back in 2021. And I don’t mean just my own understanding of the subjects discussed (I remember really struggling with the concept of proof of work), but also the massive changes we’ve seen in the adoption and public image of Bitcoin itself.

Anyway, here’s the conversation. I would class Gigi as—well, in my case at least—the most respected Bitcoiner out there. He’s been at the sharp end of the Bitcoin wedge for a very long time, and I think these two interviews represent an excellent snapshot of that particular moment in Bitcoin’s history. Plus, it’s Gigi, so obviously, there’s a ton of alpha too.

Anyway, enjoy the conversation, and see you on the next one.

109 - Alex Ugorji: Life in a Honduran Free City Under Threat

Honduras, Ciudad Morazán, ZEDE Law, Repeal, Libertarianism, Economic Freedom, Governance, Legal Challenges, Community Development, Incentives, Political Dynamics, Próspera.

Timothy Allen talks with Alex Ugorji.

Alex is one of the original residents of Ciudad Morazán, the so called 'blue collar Free City' and one of the lesser known Honduran ZEDEs. In fact, as far as I can tell, he is the third-longest-standing resident of a modern Free City in history, so his opinion carries weight.

He shares his journey from the Northern Mariana Islands in the northwestern Pacific Ocean to Honduras, exploring the potential of crypto-friendly environments and the complexities of navigating financial regulations. Alex sheds light on the current legal uncertainties surrounding the ZEDE regime in Honduras, particularly in the wake of the supreme court's controversial decision to retroactively repeal the ZEDE law, and discusses its implications for investors and residents.

The conversation also delves into the broader political landscape of Central America, examining the rise of libertarian figures and the competitive dynamics shaping policy decisions in the region.

Morazán often flies under the radar of journalists and commentators reporting on ZEDEs in Honduras. More often than not, this is because it doesn’t conform to the negative stereotypes frequently perpetuated by legacy media. 105 - Efrat Fenigson: Unmasking Agenda 2030

Agenda 2030, Agenda 2050, Agenda 21, Stablecoins, Climate Change, Control, Smart Cities, 15 Minute Cities, Surveillance, Bitcoin, Spiritual Awareness, Fear, Compliance, Resistance.

Timothy Allen talks with Efrat Fenigson.

This conversation explores the rise of centralised control in a digital age with particular reference to Agenda 2030.

Efrat sees Agenda 2030 as a plan to control many facets of human life, from finances and movement to information and even food choices. She argues that while the agenda is presented as a benevolent path toward sustainability, it relies heavily on manipulating people through fear and encouraging compliance. Efrat is particularly concerned about the way climate change is being used to justify policies that could erode personal liberties.

Efrat believes it’s impossible to save everyone, arguing that awakening to these realities is ultimately a personal choice. She emphasises the importance of individual responsibility, urging listeners to educate themselves, become financially independent through tools like Bitcoin, and seek out communities that align with their values. She also highlights the spiritual dimension of this struggle, suggesting that true freedom requires not just external changes but also inner work and a deeper understanding of one’s place in the world.

Enjoy the conversation.

VIDEO version of this episode: https://linktr.ee/freeCitiesPodcast

Free Cities Podcast on Fountain: https://fountain.fm/show/xudG4tsYH5TimGLfAmqn

Contact the podcast: [email protected]

Free Cities Telegram Community: https://t.me/+im6c6r4jQkUzMjU0

LIBERTY IN OUR LIFETIME CONFERENCE: https://libertyinourlifetime.org/

Make a small weekly donation to support the show:

https://www.patreon.com/FreeCitiesPodcast/

TIMESTAMPS:

00:00 Start

00:30 Introduction

07:50 Personal branding and PR

19:07 Understanding the Agenda and Its Implications

20:00 Stablecoins and CBDC's

26:40 Agenda 21 > Agenda 2030 > Agenda 2050

35:08 Food, Farming, and Control

44:04 Do People Actually Want Freedom?

45:01 Understanding Agenda 2030

46:57 Build Back Better: A Deceptive Agenda

51:14 The Role of Destruction in Rebuilding

57:04 The 2030 and 2050 Visions

01:03:23 C40 and the Smart City Agenda

01:10:25 The Climate Agenda: A Tool for Control

01:20:00 Misinformation and the Sustainable Development Goals

01:28:59 The Limits of Sovereignty and Personal Growth

01:32:42 The Role of Activism and Personal Responsibility

01:36:01 Safety and Freedom: A Personal Perspective

01:39:21 Exploring Alternative Living Spaces

01:42:19 The Intersection of Spirituality and Freedom

01:55:34 Navigating the Spiritual Battle in Today's World

NOSTR:

Efrat Fenigson: npub1dg6es53r3hys9tk3n7aldgz4lx4ly8qu4zg468zwyl6smuhjjrvsnhsguz

Timothy Allen: [email protected]

Free Cities Foundation: npub1lsj8pmgedqqamt89c27tzjjnlf0wn7q7udjm7j2cl9xxz97eacns2mwpee

TWITTER X:

Efrat Fenigson: https://x.com/efenigson

Timothy Allen: https://twitter.com/MrTimothyAllen

Free Cities Foundation: https://twitter.com/freecitiesfound

LINKS:

Efrat Fenigson: https://linktr.ee/efenigson

Efrat's other appe

Elon Musk, Twitter, X, Free Speech, Censorship, Trump, US Election, Liberty, End The Fed, Nostr, Federal Reserve, Bitcoin, Libertarianism.

Timothy Allen talks with Natalie Danelishen.

It is election week in the US, so I thought we should get some feedback from a local this week.

Natalie is well-embedded in the political quagmire as a well-followed Twitter influencer, tweeting about liberty and freedom. One of Elon's favourite libertarians, she even got Javier Milei to retweet a photo from the conference this year. Well done, Nat!

We recorded this conversation a few days before the election, so we didn't know the result.
Bitcoin, Pensions, Institutional Investment, Austrian Economics, 2008 Financial Crisis, Hyperinflation Risk, Energy Consumption, ESG Considerations, Pension Schemes, Financial Literacy, Financial Planning.

Timothy Allen talks with Sam Roberts.

Sam is a qualified actuary and director at Cartwright, a UK-based pensions and investment advisory firm that serves institutional clients such as corporate pension schemes, charities, and corporate treasuries.

Under the direction of Sam, Cartwright has been the first UK firm to make the bold move of advising their clients to allocate bitcoin to their portfolios, part of the so called 'arrival of institutions' into this new financial realm.

In this episode, we delve into Bitcoin's emerging role in the institutional investment landscape, particularly within pension funds. Sam shares his journey from the 2008 financial crisis to viewing Bitcoin as a hedge against systemic risks and discusses the challenges of integrating Bitcoin into the traditionally slow-moving pensions industry.

We also discuss the potential of Bitcoin as a tool for economic resilience, its environmental impact, and its role in a future financial system that could lead to a new economic renaissance.

Enjoy the conversation.

Free Cities Podcast on Fountain: https://fountain.fm/show/xudG4tsYH5TimGLfAmqn

Contact the podcast: [email protected]

Free Cities Telegram Community: https://t.me/+im6c6r4jQkUzMjU0

LIBERTY IN OUR LIFETIME CONFERENCE: https://libertyinourlifetime.org/

Make a small weekly donation to support the show:

https://www.patreon.com/FreeCitiesPodcast/

TIMESTAMPS:

(00:30) Introduction

(04:52) Previous episode with Glenn Cameron (Ep 081)

(05:44) Introduction to Sam

(06:42) The 2008 global financial crisis

(09:41) Dabbling with cryptocurrencies early on

(11:19) The event that was an inflection point in my thinking

(18:55) The traditional way to hedge against inflation is to buy UK government bonds

(25:57) All models are wrong and some are useful

(31:01) Why is Keynesian economic theory so prevalent?

(35:34) Pensions and Bitcoin

(42:59) How the UK pension system could be improved

(49:39) George Osborne did away with requirement to buy annuity for retirement

(55:23) Concerns about Bitcoin

(1:02:52) Bitcoin is good for the environment because it uses energy

(01:10:47) Big firms move very slowly

(01:11:44) Is volatility a bad thing?

(01:14:58) What's your opinion on the likelihood of hyperinflation?

(01:22:18)

101 - Ben Arc: Nostr, Anarchy & Algorithms

Nostr, Social Media, Algorithms, Censorship, Freedom of Speech, Cryptography, Anarchism, Hutting, Próspera, Honduras, Fountain App, Amethyst.

Timothy Allen talks with Ben Arc.

You may have noticed recently that I’ve been talking a fair bit about Nostr on this podcast. We’re even reading out Nostr messages at the beginning of each episode. Well, it’s time to take a deeper dive, but before we do, I want to give my best 101 intro to start you off.

This is important. As far as I can tell, Nostr is not just another fly-by-night social media platform that will never get enough onboarders to change the world. Yes, it’s true that most people are using the protocol for social media right now, but that misses the point of this incredible new technology.

Nostr (Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays) is a decentralized, censorship-resistant protocol for creating and sharing content.
It uses no central servers or authorities.

As an open protocol, anyone can use, implement, and build upon it without requiring permission.

In the same way Bitcoin works, users identify themselves with cryptographic public-private key pairs and send messages through a network of relays. This makes censorship on the platform incredibly difficult since users can connect to whichever relays they choose. So, if a relay is censoring content, you just switch to another that isn’t.

Social media apps are just the start, as you’ll hear in this episode. As we speak, there is a massive and growing community of people building out a new censorship-resistant version of the internet on top of Nostr.

On Nostr, you own your own identity and data—or what people refer to as your social graph—and you can take it to whichever app the sits on the protocol that you like.

Ben Arc is the founder of LNbits and a developer who was involved in Nostr from its early beginnings.

Enjoy the conversation.

Free Cities Podcast on Fountain: https://fountain.fm/show/xudG4tsYH5TimGLfAmqn

Contact the podcast: [email protected]

Free Cities Telegram Community: https://t.me/+im6c6r4jQkUzMjU0

LIBERTY IN OUR LIFETIME CONFERENCE: https://libertyinourlifetime.org/

Make a small weekly donation to support the show:

https://www.patreon.com/FreeCitiesPodcast/

TIMESTAMPS:

(00:30) Introduction

(11:29) Nostr, Bluesky and Jack Dorsey

(21:30) Freedom of speech requires a free space

(34:45) Decentralized Identity and internet of things Integration

(40:04) Identity, reputation and Key Management

(48:53) Public key cryptography is the revolution

(53:47) Development of LNBits ATM Technology

(01:04:02) LNBits news

(01:11:29) Future of Encrypted Messaging

(01:18:39) The naivety of certain left wing beliefs

(01:29:58) Hutting, Off-Grid Community Living and Decision Making

(01:37:17) Community Land Ownership and Governance

(01:45:48) Bridging Anarchism and Private Cities

(01:52:11) What I found visiting Prospera in Honduras

NOSTR:

Ben Arc: [email protected]

Timothy Allen: [email protected]

Free Cities Foundation: npub1lsj8pmgedqqamt89c27tzjjnlf0wn7q7udjm7j2cl9xxz97eacns2mwpee

TWITTER:

Ben Arc: https://x.com/arcbtc

Timothy Allen: https://twitter.com/MrTimothyAllen

Free Cities Foundation: https://twitter.com/freecitiesfound

LINKS:

LNbits: https://lnbits.com/

Nostr Resources: <a href="https://nostr.com/"&

100 - Peter Young: 100th Episode Free Cities Review

Governance, Bitcoin, Intentional Communities, Libertarianism, Próspera, ICSID Arbitration, Dubai, Liberty In Our Lifetime, Seasteading, Sark renovation, Liberland.

Timothy Allen talks with Peter Young.

So, how can I sum up the last 100 episodes? Well, it's been a phenomenal journey for me, which has taken me all over the world, meeting exceptional people who are really pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the market of living together.

Of course, I feel very fortunate to have had this opportunity to learn out loud about all this stuff, and thankful that you've been able to come along with me for the ride. Before I started this podcast, governance wasn't high on my list of interests, but as the months have gone by, I've realised that it's one of the most important aspects of the freedom that we're all searching for in the world. Also, one of the aspects that is often at the heart of conflict and dispute.

If only it were as simple as 'live and let live'… but we all know that it's not and never will be, so we carry on discussing, building, and creating parallel systems into which people can voluntarily opt in.

There are no utopias in the future, there's no end to this road, but right now, what there is in our present is a world in which you can choose to work on a project that you believe in, a project that you can offer up to your fellow humans to join in or not, and then after that, and I've said this many times before, it's just a case of turning up each day and putting in the work.

Never forget, you get to work on what I believe are the most interesting projects on the planet at this particular and incredible time in history. 099 - Dr. David Bovill: Future States, Regenerative Cities & Open Source Law

Privacy, Identity, Future State Congress, Network State, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Open Source, Nomadism, Regenerative Cities, Digital Utopias, Intentional Communities.

Timothy Allen talks with Dr. David Bovill.
David is a former medical scientist, hacker, programmer, and artist, currently known as—and I’ll quote his brief bio from the current Future State Congress website here—“Liquid democracy OG, Ethereum early adopter, commons platforms like WikiWiki contributor.”
As you will hear, he’s been involved in quite a few projects, most interesting for us being his work at the Network State end of the Free Cities spectrum, which includes a lot of unfamiliar territory for me.
In this conversation, we talk about privacy, identity, grassroots action, digital utopias, intentional communities, nomadic communities, regenerative cities, and open source law, to name but a few. I also learn a new word: 'Anarchive', from the word 'anarchy,' of course. I like that one.
Although we share much in common, we also disagree on quite a bit, so hopefully this will be an interesting discussion for you, as a fly on our wall.
Enjoy the conversation.

Free Cities Podcast on Fountain: https://fountain.fm/show/xudG4tsYH5TimGLfAmqn

Contact the podcast: [email protected]

Free Cities Telegram Community: https://t.me/+im6c6r4jQkUzMjU0

LIBERTY IN OUR LIFETIME CONFERENCE: https://libertyinourlifetime.org/

Make a small weekly donation to support the show:

https://www.patreon.com/FreeCitiesPodcast/

TIMESTAMPS:

(00:30) Introduction to episode
(05:29) Dr. Bovill's career path
(11:25) Why do you have a much more public persona these days?
(19:15) Just about any technology, any biological knowledge, economic process tends towards centralization
(22:29) The UK party scene in the 1980s and 90s
(31:09) Are we're doomed to keep repeating cycles of authoritarianism?
(38:33) Network state infrastructure and abstract power
(44:18) What is a network state?
(53:26) How do you deal with the physical aspect of someone taking over property?
(01:00:48) Building a regenerative city in Ukraine
(01:05:49) What is a regenerative city?
(01:14:04) Experimenting with governance models & choosing leaders.
(01:20:03) Who is funding the Futurestate project?
(01:24:59) How do you keep nomadic people from moving on?
(01:25:55) Ideological cities
(01:34:05) Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy's involvement in Futurestate
(01:41:54) I.P. rights
(01:46:29) What are some examples of successful governance projects that you've encountered?
(01:57:23) Crypto is not robustly decentralized & Bitcoin is
(02:04:13) Some amount of centralization is essential to good governance
(02:07:34) The base chain must be decentralized or else truth is lost
(02:13:34) Why wouldn't you use a normal database instead of a blockchain?
(02:16:31) Name something in existence that is really decentralized
(02:22:17) What can you do with bitcoin that you can't do with cash?
(02:27:09) Bitcoin is naive and retro
(02:33:23) Bitcoin economics are childish
(02:49:43) Bitcoin defunds the state
(02:53:16) You can't see the full potential of Bitcoin

NOSTR:

Timothy Allen: npub1gcf9ltaeu42f4tr20z3avkas04dezlx3jaudqsuu87gvmh686xasrvqjg0

Free Cities Foundation: npub1lsj8pmgedqqamt89c27tzjjnlf0wn7q7udjm7j2cl9xxz97eacns2mwpee

TWITTER:

Dr David Bovill: https://x.com/fortyfoxes

Timothy Allen: https://twitter.com/MrTimothyAllen

Free Cities Foundation: https://twitter.com/freecitiesfound
<
098 - Selfbankt: Decentralised Networks, Filter Events & Confronting Orthodoxy

Nostr, Surveillance State, Religion, Bitcoin, Great Filters, Acceleration Theory, Family, Decentralised Networks, Defiance.

Timothy Allen talks with Selfbankt.

I've got another pseudonymous guest for you again this week. He's somebody I originally met through Twitter some years ago, subsequently forging a good friendship in real life, you may know him from Twitter yourself, in fact. He was a well-known character to Bitcoiners: SelfBankt, that was until he was banned from Twitter during the pandemic for 'wrongthink'… that was pre-Elon, obviously.

Anyway, rather than reappearing on the bird app under a new guise, he made a home on the decentralized messaging network known as Nostr, something that many other people appear to be doing of late, myself included… and that is something that we speak about a fair bit in this episode, along with his experience of nearly losing his job as an anesthetist over the COVID jab, the importance of what he calls 'filter' events in life, and his discovery of religion and how that fits in with all the Orwellian events he's witnessed over the last few years.

Enjoy the conversation.

Free Cities Podcast on Fountain: https://fountain.fm/show/xudG4tsYH5TimGLfAmqn

Contact the podcast: [email protected]

Free Cities Telegram Community: https://t.me/+im6c6r4jQkUzMjU0

LIBERTY IN OUR LIFETIME CONFERENCE: https://libertyinourlifetime.org/

Make a small weekly donation to support the show:

https://www.patreon.com/FreeCitiesPodcast/

AI SUMMARY:

"Timothy Allen hosts the 98th episode of the Free Cities Podcast, featuring a pseudonymous guest known as Selfbankt. They discuss the guest's experience as an anesthetist during the COVID-19 pandemic, including nearly losing his job over vaccine mandates. The conversation touches on the importance of Bitcoin as a financial security measure and the potential of Nostr for self-sovereign digital identity. They also explore the guest's newfound religious beliefs and their impact on his life, emphasizing gratitude, optimism, and community. The episode concludes with reflections on the challenges and opportunities in modern society."

NOSTR:

Selfbankt: npub103a6vk43crw497dlaptwfmhctxqu22mwepshjcvvp29fzwrhtx4q675n6p

Timothy Allen: npub1gcf9ltaeu42f4tr20z3avkas04dezlx3jaudqsuu87gvmh686xasrvqjg0

Free Cities Foundation: npub1lsj8pmgedqqamt89c27tzjjnlf0wn7q7udjm7j2cl9xxz97eacns2mwpee

TWITTER:

Timothy Allen: https://twitter.com/MrTimothyAllen

Free Cities Foundation: https://twitter.com/freecitiesfound

LINKS:

Free Cities Foundation: https://free-cities.org/

097 - Ben Gunn: Volatility, Stoicism & Anti-Fragile Networks

Bitcoin, Forestry, Stoicism, Próspera, Volatility, Risk, Anti-fragility, Nostr, Identity, Land Ownership, Parallel Networks, Freedom, Citadels.

Timothy Allen talks with Ben Gunn.

Pseudonymous Ben is somewhat of an elusive character.. and I mean that in the best possible way. He’s a grafter, a proof-of-worker and he doesn’t sit down and do podcasts very often.

I drove up the Welsh borders to visit him at his woodland estate last week to chat about a number of things. The idea was initially sparked by a conversation we had in Prague a few months prior when he told me he was starting a company in Próspera.

We meander though a number of subjects during this chat, diving under the surface of Ben’s forestry project in Wales and the ethics that underpin its business model. We talk about his experiences living on Roatan in Honduras, about the pandemic, inflection points and the broader implications of global economic shifts. Ben is a former broker and he uses the language of finance to frame many of the interesting concepts we speak about, including my request for him to explain “Long Vol” to me. If you don’t know what that means, I’m not about to explain it here but its something I’ve been grappling with for a while. Thankfully Ben sorted me out this time, so many thanks for that and listen on for your own answers and much more.

Enjoy the conversation.

Free Cities Podcast on Fountain: https://fountain.fm/show/xudG4tsYH5TimGLfAmqn

Contact the podcast: [email protected]

Free Cities Telegram Community: https://t.me/+im6c6r4jQkUzMjU0

LIBERTY IN OUR LIFETIME CONFERENCE: https://libertyinourlifetime.org/

Make a small weekly donation to support the show:

https://www.patreon.com/FreeCitiesPodcast/

TIMESTAMPS

- 00:30 - Introduction

- 05:45 - Setting the scene

- 09:06 - Creating new existential threats to society

- 14:12 - ESG and the misallocation of capital

- 15:57 - Ben's journey: Military, finance, diving and forestry

- 26:25 - Explanation of the project in Wales

- 35:22 - Living in Prospera: Experiences and insights

- 48:59 - Critique of the Prospera model

- 1:04:26 - Blue collar/white collar pay spread

- 1:18:30 - You can fight the system successfully

- 1:22:27 - Explanation of "long vol" & anti-fragility

- 1:35:42 - Protecting physical networks from destruction

- 1:42:59 - Preparation & risk

- 1:51:39 - The modern comfort crisis

- 1:55:20 - Stoicism & raising children

- 2:06:53 - Resilience and anti-fragility in life & business

- 2:21:01 - Doing business in a network of Bitcoiners

- 2:26:05 - Successfully dealing with bureaucracy

- 2:34:42 - How do stoics deal with incompetency in others

- 2:47:34 - The most important task is to have a family

- 2:53:17 - Strategies for making decisions in life

- 3:04:22 - Describing the world through the lexicon of finance

- 3:13:18 - The truth is in the pudding

NOSTR:

Ben Gunn: npub1lt8nn8aaa6qa63wjwj8gz2djf5nlhg3zfd0v6l45v8zhvuyh0p3s5zzt5y

Timothy Allen: npub1gcf9ltaeu42f4tr20z3avkas04dezlx3jaudqsuu87gvmh686xasrvqjg0

Free Cities Foundation: npub1lsj8pmgedqqamt89c27tzjjnlf0wn7q7udjm7j2cl9xxz97eacns2mwpee

TWITTER:

Ben Gunn: https://twitter.com/poorbengunn

Timothy Allen: https://twitter.com/MrTimothyAllen

Free Cities Foundation: https://twitter.com/freecitiesfound

LINKS:

Free Cities Foundation: <a href="https://free-citi

Socialism, Communism, 1989, Gold, Bitcoin, Central Banking, Dollar Hegemony, Stablecoins, Governance, Rebellion.

Timothy Allen talks with Niko Jilch.

Today I have for you my last recording from Prague's 2024 Bitcoin conference. Niko is an Austrian financial journalist who’s been covering financial markets, monetary history/policy and macro economics for over 10 years. Interestedly for me, he’s been an advocate for gold for most of that time too and, as many of you will know, I’ve been dying to get a gold bug on this show for quite some time now. Spoiler alert: Niko is also an evangelical Bitcoiner… I'm trying my hardest here!

In this long conversation we cover a number of key financial topics beginning with the historical and contemporary implications of socialism and/or communism . Niko draws many parallels between the peaceful revolutions of 1989 in Eastern Europe and the situation we find ourselves in today in Western Europe vis-à-vis the emergence of Bitcoin as digital gold and a vehicle that can be used to peacefully exit the current fiat system.

Continue listening for more of Niko's takes on gold, stable coins, governance models, the federal reserve and central banking, plus his personal opinions on what might be your best practices to help you ride out the current wave of social and economic volatility that we see in the world.

Enjoy the conversation.

Free Cities Podcast on Fountain: https://fountain.fm/show/xudG4tsYH5TimGLfAmqn

Contact the podcast: [email protected]

Free Cities Telegram Community: https://t.me/+im6c6r4jQkUzMjU0

LIBERTY IN OUR LIFETIME CONFERENCE: https://libertyinourlifetime.org/

Make a small weekly donation to support the show:

https://www.patreon.com/FreeCitiesPodcast/

TIMESTAMPS

00:30 - Introduction

05:59 - Historical and contemporary implications of socialism

09:04 - The role of Bitcoin in modern social and economic volatility

14:31 - Socialism and fiat money

22:37 - Govt subsidies and the free market

49:25 - The future of gold

54:36 - Lessons from the 1989 revolutions in eastern Europe

1:13:25 - The role of media in social and political movements

1:27:09 - The implications of Bitcoin ETFs

1:45:44 - States will try to claim all the dormant Bitcoins

1:55:07 - Donald Trump and Bitcoin

2:00:51 - Competing with the US dollar

2:07:46 - Watching Bitcoin game theory playing out IRL

2:15:58 - Disrupting the federal reserve

2:17:58 - 'Gradually then suddenly' is a myth

2:32:49 - Bitcoin and the 2024 US general election

2:37:00 - The democratic system is important

2:44:28 - Tactics of the fiat socialist system

2:50:16 - Be the change you want to see in the world

TWITTER:

Niko Jilch: https://x.com/NikoJilch

Timothy Allen: https://twitter.com/MrTimothyAllen

Free Cities Foundation: https://twitter.com/freecitiesfound

LINKS:

Niko's website: https://nikojilch.com/

Free Cities Foundation: https://free-cities.org/

093 - Nathan Day: Overlanding, Self Sovereign Identity & Bitcoin Adoption

Self Sovereignty, Overlanding, Landsteading, Bitcoin Adoption, Digital Identity, BTC Map, Flag Theory, Freedom.

Timothy Allen talks with Nathan Day.

Nathan is a former global IT systems optimiser who managed to gain a degree of financial freedom after he sold his business a few years ago. Consequentially, this lead to him and his wife to ask themselves the question:

“If we were terminally ill and had 2 years to live, what would we do?”

The answer came in the form of a custom built, fully pimped out overland & off-road truck which their family has been using as a home from home ever since.

In this conversation we discuss various topics related to Bitcoin, including the installation of miners in their truck, their experiences living self-sovereign lives during the COVID-19 pandemic and the potential of decentralized networks like Nostr to revolutionize digital identity.

We also explore the connections between time, entropy and Bitcoin and discuss the current state of Bitcoin adoption and infrastructure globally. If you’re a Bitcoiner you’ll probably know Nathan better as the co-founder of BTC Map, the indispensable app for finding merchants that accept bitcoin. Nathan shares some fascinating insights into merchant adoption around the globe, arguably one of the best metrics for measuring the success of the decentralised money.

Enjoy the conversation.

Free Cities Podcast on Fountain: https://fountain.fm/show/xudG4tsYH5TimGLfAmqn

Contact the podcast: [email protected]

Free Cities Telegram Community: https://t.me/+im6c6r4jQkUzMjU0

LIBERTY IN OUR LIFETIME CONFERENCE: https://libertyinourlifetime.org/

Make a small weekly donation to support the show:

https://www.patreon.com/FreeCitiesPodcast/

TIMESTAMPS

(0:30) Introduction

(4:40) Overland truck and Bitcoin mining setup

(12:51) Nathan's background & ensuing self-sovereign lifestyle

(18:47) Travel experiences and COVID-19 impact

(33:52) Bitcoin, adoption and BTC Map

(40:20) Bitcoin is time

(50:49) Is BTC adoption increasing?

(54:26) Where are the most interesting clusters of BTC adoption?

(1:01:32) Nostr and decentralised identity

TWITTER:

Nathan Day: https://x.com/nathan_day

BTC Map: https://x.com/BTCMap

Timothy Allen: https://twitter.com/MrTimothyAllen

Free Cities Foundation: https://twitter.com/freecitiesfound

OTHER LINKS:

BTC Map: https://btcmap.org/

Free Cities Foundation: https://free-cities.org/
