He’s the co-author of the book ‘Bitcoin is Venice’, a very well respected book about modern economic theories… both the good ones and the bad ones. The title of the book comes from one of the Allen's essays in which he connects the properties of Venice which lead to it becoming arguably the most successful cities of all time with the attributes of the monetary technology of Bitcoin.</p> <p>As you may guess, Allen thinks that Bitcoin could be pivotal in helping to usher in a new age of governance and worldwide economic realities. We discuss Venice’s 1000+ year success story and its final demise along with his take on the sovereign individual thesis we see playing out in real life at the moment. Allen is somebody who uses the word 'Fiat' as an adjective, so we inevitably end up discussing the importance of letting go of the fiat monetary system in favour of a Bitcoin standard.</p> <p>All in all this is a very interesting conversation at the intersection of Free Cities and Bitcoin. Efrat Fenigson is a journalist and marketing expert who I sat down with in Prague a few weeks ago to talk everything CBDCs (Central Bank Digital Currencies).</p> <p>CBDCs, as the name suggests are programmable digital tokens issued directly from a country's central bank. Don’t think that’s a problem? I do, but don’t just trust me. Here’s how Agustín Carsten, the general manager of the Bank of International Settlements framed it a couple of years ago whilst he was talking about physical cash: "A key difference with the CBDC.. is that the central bank will have absolute control over the rules and regulations that will determine the use of that expression of central bank liability.”</p> <p>Yes, that’s right, it's programmable money issued solely by the creepy psychopathic banking overlord types. That’s my characterisation of course, but I’ve linked that particular speech in the show notes below so you can take a look to see if you would trust this guy as the issuer and controller of your money.</p> <p>Fortunately for us, since 2008 we have had an antidote to this sociopathy. I have been a fan of his for quite some time, greatly appreciating his ability to straddle the worlds of traditional finance on the one hand & the somewhat esoteric world of Bitcoin on the other. </p> <p>One thing that may need explaining here and something that I would definitely advise you to check out prior to listening to this episode is Tuur's interview on the 'What Bitcoin Did' podcast <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2FDvWGCS40">⁠episode #691⁠</a> entitled ‘From Psychedelics to the Bitcoin Boom’. </p> <p>During that show Tuur recounts his harrowing experience taking the psychedelic <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ibogaine">⁠Ibogaine⁠</a> in an attempt to gain access to the source of some personal anxiety he had been experiencing for many years.</p> <p>At the start of my episode we jump straight into those experiences, so it may help to listen to WBD first to better understand the context.</p> <p>My questions in this discussion may seem a little chaotic so you’ll have to forgive me for that. I had so much that I wanted to discuss with Tuur but only 1.5 hours in which to talk. In hindsight I think I was trying to conjure up the understanding that what Tuur experienced on his ibogaine trip and what we are all experiencing in our daily lives are very similar in nature, and that is summed up well in the title of this episode. Tuur says it in the conversation: </p> <p>“Let's identify how we are shackled’.</p> <p>I think that many of us are stumbling through life without ever noticing the shackles that are shaping our actions. This is a also true for our money of course as we discuss in the conversation, but the thing I was trying to convey is that change begins with the acknowledgment and experience of awareness. When we become aware of our shackles, be they suppressed childhood experiences or fiat monetary systems, from the position of awareness we can begin to let them move and become 'unstuck' as Tuur likes to call it. </p> <p>This is an episode about finding hope in dark places. <p>Timothy Allen talks with Patrick Lamson Hall and Nuria Forques.</p> <p>Patrick and Nuria are a husband-and-wife team whose firm, 'Fitted Projects,' was commissioned to design the Honduran ZEDE community of Ciudad Morazán, the second ZEDE established in Honduras after Próspera. While Próspera primarily focused on technological innovation and connecting Honduras with international business, Morazán was designed as more of a 'blue-collar ZEDE,' targeting working-class and middle-class residents primarily from Honduras.</p> <p>Patrick and Nuria have much to share about the design, implementation, and future of Free City projects. It was phenomenal to sit down with two individuals who possess such in-depth, hands-on experience in manifesting these innovative ideas in real life.</p> <p>This conversation was recorded during the 'New Cities & Network States' weekend at Zuzalu, the so-called pop-up city gathering in Montenegro. <p>Timothy Allen talks with Pavol Lupták.</p> <p>Pavol is someone who I’ve been trying to talk to for quite a while… so many people have mentioned his name to me but he had thus far proved to be a pretty elusive guy on account of the fact that he is (amongst other things) a perpetual traveller. Fortunately for me I bumped into him at BTC Prague where his company Liberation Travel had a stand next to the Free Cities Bureau, and I managed to sit down with him for a couple of hours to delve a bit deeper into his fascinating life.</p> <p>Pavol has been involved in the crypto anarchy scene in Prague for many years. As the founder of both an ethical hacking IT security company and Prague’s Paralelni Polis, arguably one of the world’s most infamous Bitcoin and crypto anarchy hubs, he has a unique perspective on the ins and outs of creating parallel systems and opting out of mainstream structures.</p> <p>In fact Liberation Travel’s sole purpose is to help freedom minded people to leave oppressive situations and relocate to a better jurisdiction or become what Pavol calls a ‘Global opportunist’.</p> <p>Interestingly, something I didn’t know before this conversation was that Pavol has been visiting intentional communities and Free Cities projects for quite some time already, conducting personal research on different governance models. <p>Timothy Allen talks with Niko Laamanen.</p> <p>This week it's another dispatch from my recent visit to BTC Prague. <p>Timothy Allen talks with Casey Given.</p> <p>Casey is the president and executive director of ‘Young Voices’ which is a non profit agency that aims to cultivate the next generation of libertarian thought leaders in policy, journalism, and academia, or as Casey himself describes it, "A talent agency for heterodox thinkers".</p> <p>Casey has an interesting connection with the Free Cities movement through his undergrad student days and UC Berkley where he hosted a number of prominent seasteaders at the university's libertarian club which he founded.</p> <p>In this conversation we discuss Young Voices’s strategy for creating change in the media, both the legacy version and the new media landscape of soundbites and social influencers.
