Jules & Andy: Abhorrent racist abuse, England’s united response, and impressive individual performances
On what should have been a night for analysing England’s impressive performance in Bulgaria, racist abuse from the stands is, rightly, the main focus on today’s episode of Jules & Andy. We discuss the dignified response of the England players and staff, the unprecedented actions taken by UEFA and how this abuse can be stamped out at future matches. There’s also time for deserved praise for the likes of Raheem Sterling and Tyrone Mings, the latter hugely impressive on his international debut, who are sought out for comment by the media spotlight on occasions like this. We do manage to talk about England’s hugely impressive display on the pitch and take stock of where this England team are, eight months out from Euro 2020. We're currently on tour! The Ramble: England stumble, Wales earn a hard fought point, and Scotland stun San Marino
Oof, England’s visit to Prague wasn’t the stroll in the park many anticipated it being. It was more like a stumble into some stinging nettles because you were looking at your phone and had assumed the whole thing would be straightforward. Things were better over in Wales, as Gareth Bale’s brilliance earned the home side a point, while Andorra won their first ever European Championship qualifier and and John “Bangin’ ‘em in” McGinn kept up his goalscoring form. Aside from the football we also find time to discuss… Fantasia, Royal nicknames and Petr Cech: Goaltender. We're currently on tour! The Blizzard: Boca Juniors 2-1 Real Madrid, 2000
Hola y bienvenido to another episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. We’re off to the 2000 Intercontinental Cup final where Boca Juniors took on Real Madrid, and our tour guide for today is football writer and editor of Brazil Global Football Rupert Fryer! This was a hugely significant game for both sides; the Boca side featured three legends of the game fleetingly crossing paths, as manager Carlos Bianchi led a team featuring Juan Román Riquelme and Martín Palermo. Whilst on the Spanish side of the ledger, Luís Figo recently signalled the beginning of the Galáticos era by moving to Real as the world’s most expensive player. He was backed up by a team that included Guti, Raúl and Steve McManaman and was manager by legendary coach Vicente del Bosque. Listen on for extensive chat about a collection of brilliant footballers showcasing their brilliant skill.Fancy getting in touch? The Preview Show: Euro 2020 qualifiers, Sergio Ramos and, of course… Coleen Rooney vs Rebekah Vardy
International breaks can sometimes make for a dearth of talking points, but not today! DI Coleen Rooney has been sleuthing and she’s uncovered some suspicious activity on Instagram. In a slightly less charged battle North Korea take on South Korea, while England revisit the scene of many, many appalling stags as they take on the Czech Republic in Prague. We’ve also got snipers, Mick McCarthy and the Royal privilege of five-a-side enthusiast Prince William at Carrow Road. On The Continent: Managerial merry-go-round, Freiburg's great start, and Euro 2020 qualifiers
With Andy Brassell away on various continental crusades, we’ve got Lars Sivertsen on today’s On The Continent, alongside messrs Moore and Horncastle. After beginning with renewed praise for Lars’ goalscoring compatriot Erling Braut Håland, we discuss the fallout from St-Étienne’s last gasp win over Lyon in Le Derby. The fortunes of the two managers could not be more different, as Claude Puel got his dream start as Saint-Étienne coach and Sylvinho subsequently lost his job in the Lyon dugout.Elsewhere, we discuss Freiburg’s hugely impressive start to the Bundesliga season under long-serving coach Christian Streich. We also get a Milan roundup from James, after Stefano Pioli replaces Marco Giampaolo in the Milanese hot seat, and Lars gives us a preview of Norway’s upcoming EURO 2020 qualifiers!Drop us a line: [email protected] or find us on social media by searching 'Football Ramble Daily'.We're on tour, and playing Bournemouth's Pavilion Theatre tonight! Jules & Andy: A superb win for Brighton, Southampton struggle on, and worries for Marco Silva
Of course, there’s only one place we’re starting on this week’s episode of Jules & Andy: Brighton’s cracking win against Spurs. Jules, our delighted Brighton representative, recounts her recent meeting with manager Graham Potter and discusses how much the team have improved under his tenure. There’s even time for a Wimbledon update from Andy, since they won as well! Halcyon days indeed.Elsewhere, we take a look at struggles further down the south coast at Southampton who have gone three league games without a win. There’s some praise for their weekend opponents Chelsea- Willian in particular- and we also try to unpick Marco Silva’s troubles at Everton.Get in touch via our email: [email protected] or tweet us: @FootballRamble @andybrassell @julesbreachWe're now on tour! A weekend full of surprises as Man City, Spurs and Man United lose after limp displays— but what a day for Steve Bruce and Matty Longstaff! No Brucey belly rub for Man United this time. Could the Longstaffs be the new Ameobis? The Blizzard: Benfica 5-3 Real Madrid, 1962
Join Marcus Speller and Jonathan Wilson, this time alongside author and commentator David Bolchover, for another episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. Today we’re heading back to 1962 to celebrate one of the most influential figures in 20th century football: Béla Guttmann. His Benfica side beat Real Madrid 5-3 in the 1962 European Cup final, and this extraordinary game was entirely reflective of an extraordinary man. After arriving at Benfica, having won the league the season before with Porto, Guttmann immediately sacked twenty first team players. He then took Benfica to two Primeira Divisāo titles and a triumph in the previous European Cup, before meeting five-time winners Real Madrid in the 1962 final in Amsterdam. A thrilling, chaotic game featuring a Ferenc Puskás hat-trick finished 5-3 to Benfica, with Guttmann cementing himself as one of the finest coaches of any generation.Fancy getting in touch? The Preview Show: A nightmare for Spurs, a stern test for Leicester and a potential thriller at St James’ Park
Marcus’ giddy aunt, Ruddy Nora and Gordon Bennett were all present at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Bayern Munich continued their sustained efforts to destroy all football in North London with a comprehensive battering of Spurs. Can they put it right against Brighton?Liverpool had a strange Champions League experience themselves, and entertain Leicester and the disrespect-machine that is Jamie Vardy on Saturday. We also look ahead to Norwich hosting Aston Villa and Man United heading up to Newcastle, if only to see if both teams can remember what sport they play. On top of all this gold there’s a peek into our live documents, the return of the Brucey-belly-rub and a half understood assessment of the Robin Williams movie Bicentennial Man. On The Continent: Champions League roundup, Balo's back at Brescia, and Le Derby comes to Saint-Etienne
It’s time for another Champions League recap, as James and Andy are in situ for more continental coverage. We begin with Bayern’s tonking win over Spurs, thanks to four goals from Arsenal legend Serge Gnabry. We also take a look at some of your correspondence regarding Niko Kovač, and whether some of the doubts over his qualities have been alleviated, and we consider Bayern’s prospects for the season.Elsewhere, we discuss Real Madrid’s laboured, and largely undeserved, draw against Club Brugge, as well as revelling in the return of Mario Balotelli and Brescia. Ramble Meets... Maggie Murphy
On today’s episode of Ramble Meets… Andy Brassell is off to Lewes FC in Sussex to meet their general manager, Maggie Murphy. Lewes FC are one of the most forward-thinking clubs in the country and pay their men and women teams equally, with both sides drawing from the same cumulative revenue and sharing the famous pitch at The Dripping Pan.Andy joins Maggie in one of their pitch side beach huts to discuss scoring a hat-trick at her now-home for Shanklin Ladies when she was thirteen, her record breaking work with Equal Playing Field, her twenty-year footballing career and the potential legacy from the recent women’s World Cup. Jules & Andy: Arsenal stutter on, Man United slip to eleventh, and more troubles on Tyneside
It's time for a brand new episode of Jules & Andy, hot off the press after Monday Night Football! We delve into that slightly underwhelming affair between Man United and Arsenal, before discussing the sides' capacity for any sort of success this season. We then head north to Tyneside to try and understand what's been going wrong at Newcastle. The Ramble: Liverpool edge past Sheffield United, Villa struggle, and Watford are officially terrible
Sheffield United came so close to earning a point against Liverpool only for young Dean Henderson to make a costly mistake. Chris Wilder’s response was less arm-around-the-shoulder and more foot-square-in-the-nuts. IT’S THE ONLY WAY HE’LL LEARN.Elsewhere in the Football Universe, Wolves got a much needed win, the magnetic Slaven Bilic marches on with West Brom, we hear of ill-disciplined ball boys, Mario Balotelli makes a welcome return and Mike Dean steals the show in another sport all together. The Blizzard: Rangers 2-2 Celtic, 1987
There are some football derbies that transcend the ninety minutes on the pitch and the few annual fixtures, and instead become knitted into the fabric of the societies they inhabit. The Old Firm Derby is one of the definitive derbies in world football and we’re heading to the 1987 tie between Rangers and Celtic for today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. We’re joined by Guardian sports writer Scott Murray to discuss a truly incendiary affair - Graeme Souness’ Rangers had suffered a turgid start to the league campaign and hadn’t won the title for nine seasons, while Billy McNeil’s Celtic were flying. The two sides met in front of 44,000 people at Ibrox for one of the craziest matches you’ll ever see. The Preview Show: Giant killings in the Carabao Cup, the return of the Premier League, and more horse bothering
A man’s punched a horse again and there’s really nowhere else to start. This time it was a Portsmouth fan. We don’t know why supporters of our teams keep doing this and we assure you we’re not involved.Away from that there was an actual Carabao Cup game as Southampton won THE South Coast derby, while Spurs went out to Lolchester on penalties and Old Man Milner helped Liverpool past MK Dons. The Ramble: Man City smash Watford, VAR perplexes Spurs and Man United lumber on
New manager bounce, you say? Oh no, Watford, there will be none of that. Man City got back to their ruthless best this weekend, while Liverpool saw off the plucky underdogs of Chelsea and Spurs lost at Leicester because Son Heung-min sloppily strayed a few atoms offside. The Blizzard: Maccabi vs Hapoel, 1928
On today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we’re joined by Nicholas Blincoe, the author of ‘More Noble Than War: A Football History of Israel and Palestine.’ We’re heading to that part of the world for today’s match as we take a look at the 1928 Tel Aviv Derby, where Maccabi took on Hapoel for the first time.In these clubs’ formative years, football was an entirely different proposition in Israel-Palestine. Initially seen as too individualistic a sport, it was gradually introduced by the British military and helped by mass immigration of younger people from Austro-Hungarian cities after the First World War. Jonathan, Marcus and Nicholas discuss the background around the two sides, each formed of an entirely different demographic, as well as the 3-0 Maccabi win and its historical significance. For more stories from the annals of football history, visit www.theblizzard.co.uk to explore their archives that contain over 700 articles of stories just like this one!Our live tour starts very soon! The Preview Show: A South Coast derby, Liverpool travel to Chelsea, and Spurs visit Leicester
And so to the South Coast for one of the biggest games of the season (apparently) as Southampton host Bournemouth, while Chelsea host Liverpool, desperately hoping they won’t win a penalty as they simply have no way of knowing what will happen if they do. The true main event is of course Sean Dyche vs Daniel Farke. Will it be Burnley or Norwich who take home the points? Who cares? This one is all about the eclectic sounds of the post match interviews. Alongside all this there’s a cheese-based blast from the past, an injustice for Jeff Hendrick and further ear worms. Brie you later. Our live tour starts very soon! The Ramble: Jubilation for Norwich, Chelsea’s youngsters impress, and Arsenal revert to type
In Daniel Farke’s voice:“A pleasing weekend of football in which many of the topics were covered, such as Norwich City’s win over Manchester City which was perhaps not expected, Liverpool asserting their sporting superiority over the struggling Newcastle United and Arsenal showing much quality in the first half of their game with Watford and then perhaps letting themselves down in the second. There is also much discussion of the parting of the Red Sea, which is slightly off of the topics, there is some controversy regarding the designated email section of the podcast and some perhaps unnecessary discussion of dog boobs.”Search ‘Football Ramble’ on social media to find us, and email us here: [email protected] ***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. The Blizzard: Peru 4-2 Austria, 1936
Today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, sees us travel back to the 1936 German Olympics. Journalist and sports writer David Owen joins us to discuss the chaotic quarter-final between Peru and Austria. The game was played against a backdrop of Nazi rule and propaganda in front of a fairly empty Stadion am Gesundbrunnen. These were two sides with contrasting fortunes throughout the 1930’s; Peru were beginning an impressive run of form that culminated in a victory at the 1939 Copa América, while Austria had begun a stark decline. Despite the sides’ lowly reputation, the match and extended aftermath were utterly bizarre. Join us as David, Jonathan and Marcus discuss a tumultuous affair involving a pitch invasion, three disallowed goals and a rescheduled game. For more stories from the annals of football history, visit www.theblizzard.co.uk to explore their archives that contain over 700 articles of stories just like this one!Fancy getting in touch? The Blizzard: Ajax 2-0 Panathinaikos, 1971
For today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we’re joined by another member of the Football Ramble Daily parish: Andy Brassell! He’s here to discuss the 1971 European Cup final, where Rinus Michels’ imperious Ajax side took on Ferenc Puskás’ Panathinaikos.Ferenc Puskás’ return to Wembley - eighteen years after his miraculous display in Hungary’s 6-3 hiding of England - was most significant achievement in his coaching career. He led an unfancied but hugely talented Panathinaikos side past Everton and Red Star Belgrade in the latter stages of the competition to the final, against one of the most significant teams in football history. Captained by Velibor Vasović and featuring a Johan Cruyff at the peak of his powers, this era-defining Ajax side went on to enjoy huge success with their Total Football philosophy, and this final may well have been the sliding doors moment at the beginning of it all.We discuss the match itself, the political landscape surrounding Panathinaikos at the time and this pivotal moment in Dutch football history, which Jonathan sums up via a splendid gardening metaphor! For more stories from the annals of football history, visit www.theblizzard.co.uk to explore their archives that contain over 700 articles of stories just like this one!Fancy getting in touch? Jules & Andy: Manchester United’s struggles, a case for David Luiz’s defence, and promising signs at Everton
What’s going wrong at Manchester United? That’s our first question on today’s episode of Jules & Andy, as we cast a reflective eye over Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s time in charge. Despite some promising young signings in the summer, they still seem to be lacking in key areas further up the pitch. Can they turn it around? Or is Solskjær’s time running out?Later on, Andy makes a case for the defence in the recent public trial of Arsenal signing David Luiz. The Blizzard: Brazil 0-1 France, 2006
For our latest episode of Greatest Games, we’re joined by football writer and broadcaster Tom Williams as we take a deeper look at the 2006 World Cup quarter-final between Brazil and France. This match, despite being awash with some of the greatest players in history, was completely dominated by the balletic and utterly irresistible Zinedine Zidane. After two poor seasons with Real Madrid, many—Zidane included—felt his star was on the wane. So pervasive was this sentiment, that he announced his retirement ahead of this tournament. What followed however, against Spain in the Round of 16 and against Brazil, was a final glimpse of Zidane at his best in all his former glory. This Joga Bonito-inspired Brazil side, featuring some of the nation’s greatest attacking talent ever, could do nothing in response. Zidane left his mark on this game in broad, beautiful strokes and cemented himself as one of the greatest midfielders football has ever seen. For more stories from the annals of football history, visit www.theblizzard.co.uk to explore their archives that contain over 700 articles of stories just like this one!Fancy getting in touch? We begin with a thorough look at Frank Lampard’s Chelsea after a promising but inconsistent draw with Leicester— will we see a return to the unease that plagued much of last season? Then we take a look at some of the players who have come up from the Championship as they look to adapt to the demands of the Premier League. Teemu Pukki has taken the bull by the horns after his hat-trick against Newcastle, while Southampton’s new star Che Adams hasn’t enjoyed as successful a start. We also look at Sol Campbell’s recent exit from Macclesfield after he excelled last season despite the constraints of ‘the worst job in the football league.’Tell us your thoughts!
