How are we going to get by without any football? With rampant transfer speculation of course! The Preview Show: Getting everyone into trouble

E

Who needs actual football when we’ve got Nobby Solano getting in trouble with the law thanks to a Peruvian prank show? When we’ve got Borussia Mönchengladbach’s novel plan to fill their stadium with cutouts of fans? When we’ve got Son Hueng-Min: Super Soldier? And if you do want some of the important stuff, a European league has made a decision! Belgium have decided to crown Club Brugge champions. Will this have a knock on effect as the Premier League starts considering drastic options to finish the season? Almost certainly not. On top of all this we revisit one of our most notorious shows in Time Tunnel, learn of more video vans, discuss Richard Keys’ acting chops and potentially reveal evidence of a crime. On The Continent: Remembering Pape Diouf and The Sommelier strikes back

We start today’s episode of On The Continent with a deserved tribute to one of French football’s favourite sons, as former Marseille president Pape Diouf sadly passed away this week. We remember his incredible journey from humble beginnings in Chad to establishing himself as a respected football journalist and eventual club president, all while endearing himself to the French football public.Elsewhere, as clubs around Europe struggle with the financial fallout from the Coronavirus pandemic, we discuss whether the decision should rest on the players to donate some of their wages to non-playing staff or if that should be up to clubs and the authorities. There’s also time for a lowdown of the increasingly tense relationship between Lionel Messi and the Barcelona hierarchy, as well as some powerful statements from Atalanta supporters’ groups.  And finally – roll up, roll up, it’s time for the clash of the century. It’s the F1 car vs the go-kart; it’s beautiful goals vs beautiful features; yes, we make time to discuss the Karim Benzema vs Olivier Giroud beef! Fancy getting in touch? Ramble Meets... James Montague

E

On today’s Ramble Meets… we welcome author James Montague to talk about his experiences writing his new book, 1312: Among the Ultras.James has travelled to over 90 countries while writing the encapsulating football stories he’s become famous for, and this latest book documents another classic gonzo-style voyage to the inner workings of football’s ultra culture. He sits down with Luke to recount his experiences in the scene, from talking to the heads of ultra firms who typically hold disdain for the outside media, to being invited to organised brawls. James discusses his own moral dilemma in writing the book and presenting it for the reader to judge the stories, as well as the gambles he took with his own safety to get stories from some of the most dangerous fans in the world.Sign up to our Patreon for exclusive extra content here! Jules & Andy: Lower divisions are cancelled and clubs turn to their communities

After her Coronavirus-enforced obscene last week, Jules Breach makes her welcome return on this week’s episode of Jules & Andy! Her and Andy Brassell reconvene in the wake of The FA’s decision to end and expunge the results of tiers three to six of the football pyramid. We discuss the appeal that many clubs have signed to try and reverse the decision, as well as the steps other clubs are taking to instead help those in need within their community. We also try to gauge the possible domino effect this could have on those teams above them in the professional game who still, in theory, have seasons to complete. We also get to some of your correspondence, which includes questions around clubs’ finances in the wake of the crisis, some of our clubs’ favourite academy prospects and yet another bout of Newcastle takeover rumours. The Ramble: Pete Roulette

World Cup style camps. That’s the phrase that’s all the rage at the moment. The Premier League are continuing to look at ways to finish the season and good on them. Will we have a bizarre little behind-closed-doors conclusion to the season this summer? We just don’t know. In other news it looks like Newcastle United actually have a strong chance of winning the FA Cup this season, Arsenal have been engaging in a spot of espionage and Graeme Souness is still really angry about everything about Paul Pogba. There’s also time to learn more about Edinburgh’s bacon boys and of course, Pete’s Film Club, in which he robs yet more hours of our lives. Search ‘Football Ramble’ on social media to find us, and email us here: [email protected] ***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. The Blizzard: England 1-0 Belgium, 1990

On today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, historian Tom Holland joins us to discuss one of the standout moments in English football history: England 1-0 Belgium from Italia '90!With travelling England fans in near-penal exile on the island of Sardinia, Italian authorities were incredibly anxious throughout the entire tournament about the prospect of more of the hooliganism that had plagued previous England away games. After Bobby Robson’s side stuttered through their opener against Ireland, he changed to a back three – which immediately paid dividends. They escaped out of their group and then knocked out a Belgium side who probably deserved to win the game, thanks to that cracking volley from David Platt. For more stories from the annals of football history, visit www.theblizzard.co.uk to explore their archives that contain over 700 articles of stories just like this one!***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. Get that man a statue, outside every ground in the country. We’re also intrigued by Royston Drenthe’s latest post-football career move, Steven Gerrard’s intense in-flight behaviour and some frankly startling revelations from Marcus’ time as a particularly niche door-to-door salesman. Jules & Andy: How players are coping in isolation, with Arsenal physio Gary Lewin

It’s a slightly different episode of Jules & Andy today as, with Jules currently unwell, Andy Brassell is joined by presenter and pundit Kate Mason! After Kate tells us what it was like to present the news last night whilst introducing the Prime Minister’s address, we wonder how footballers themselves are dealing with these unprecedented times. To help shed some light on this, we speak to former Arsenal and England physio Gary Lewin. He discusses the mental challenges facing players who live almost entirely regimented lives, and how even big Premier League clubs will struggle to find the resources needed to adequately train their players. We then discuss what initiatives clubs are running in their local communities to help those affected by the crisis, as well as getting to some correspondence – which features a few ideas on how smaller clubs might be supported in the future. We'd love to here from you in these unprecedented, chaotic times - email us at: [email protected] or tweet us @JulesBreach @AndyBrassell @KvlMason!***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. The Ramble: The Torquay River Mystery

We’re back once again to find that football still seems to be a rich vein of absurdity even when there isn’t actually any football, and face up to the idea that our show might actually be better when there isn’t any. Admittedly this has been helped by some classic and very welcome outside-the-box-thinking from Ian Holloway, John Hartson’s “elaborate golf hole” idea and Torquay United discovering that they have a hell of an athlete among their ranks. We also found time to talk George Lazenby, around the house holiday clothes and the contents of Pete’s cupboards, while there’s seismic change afoot as for the very first time, we open the doors to Pete’s Film Club.Search ‘Football Ramble Daily’ on social media to find us, and email us here: [email protected] ***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. The Blizzard: Chelsea 4-2 Barcelona, 2005

We're joined on today's episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, by The Athletic's Adam Hurrey! He brings to the table an iconic Champions League tie as Barcelona arrived at Stamford Bridge for the second leg of their Last 16 tie.Barcelona ended up winning that season's La Liga in imperious fashion, and had the upper hand after their 2-1 win at the Camp Nou. The teams returned to London two weeks later, with José Mourinho naming the teams in the press conference leading up to the game. This tie served as a backdrop to the beginning of the totemic battle between the two managers, and the night featured a cocksure José Mourinho at "the perfect sweet spot of his arrogance" on one side of the ledger and, on the other, Ronaldinho at his dazzling, brilliant best. Yes, it's that goal. For more stories from the annals of football history, visit www.theblizzard.co.uk to explore their archives that contain over 700 articles of stories just like this one!***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. On The Continent: Euro 2020 gets postponed but Demba Ba is still scoring

European football has ground to a halt, but that won’t stop us recording a brand new episode of On The Continent on Football Ramble Daily!Andy and Luke sit down to discuss Uefa’s decision to postpone Euro 2020 by a year, as their new working group to try and find room to reschedule the continent’s domestic leagues. Each of those various nations have their own strategies to combating the virus, as the Spanish FA’s Luis Rubiales lambasted La Liga sides for prioritising the testing their own players. Elsewhere, we look at some of the stars who will benefit - and those who won’t - from the tournament’s postponement. The likes of Leroy Sané and Dayot Upamecano will surely light up next summer’s tournament, while Luke spares a thought for Olivier Giroud as his recent resurgence would have helped his chances of leading the line for his country again. We finish up with some actual football, as Turkey’s season continues! In these troubled times, we need comfort; and that’s exactly what Turkey’s given us, as Demba Ba keeps on scoring and a groomed Martin Škrtel stuck one in his own net. Jules & Andy: Welcome Old Trafford changes, Tanguy Ndombele's struggles continue, and another impressive Bruno Fernandes performance

Your favourite double act are back on Football Ramble Daily, here to distract you from talk of Coronavirus and cancelled football; it’s Jules & Andy!We begin today’s episode with the news that Manchester United have frozen their season ticket prices for the ninth season in a row. They have also announced an enlarged singing section within the ground and aim to move towards safe standing sections in the near future; we discuss how important these could be to improve an already-dwindling atmosphere that mirrors much of the Premier League. We then compare two recent continental signings and their vastly different impacts on the Premier League thus far, as Bruno Fernandes is already a fantastic addition to United, while Tanguy Ndombele faced further criticism from José Mourinho as he struggled in an inexperienced Spurs midfield. There’s even time for some correspondence, as we discuss the fallout around Charlton’s Jonathan Leko and what he felt was a lack of support from Kick It Out.Get in touch via twitter: @julesbreach @andybrassell @footballramble or via email: [email protected]!Check out our brand new Patreon page here: patreon.com/footballrambledaily***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. The Ramble: Manchester is red, Chelsea give Everton a hiding, and Sheffield United dream of Europe

E

Maybe Ole Gunnar Solskjaer IS the Messiah after all His winger-cum-striker filled Man United team have found some consistency and a convincing win over Man City could just… help Liverpool win the title a bit sooner. Ah, well. Chelsea also had a lovely time as they thrashed Everton, with Roy Keane unnervingly effusive, while Newcastle continued their incredible season with a win over 10-man Southampton. We also had time to discuss the mystery of the missing points, hear the first and hopefully last entry into the Football Ramble Daily slash fiction canon and enjoy a guest appearance from Mitch Hedberg. Search ‘Football Ramble Daily’ on social media to find us, and email us here: [email protected] Check out our brand new Patreon page here: patreon.com/footballrambledaily***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. At The Match: A Bundesliga II Special

It’s another At The Match episode from Germany, but this time Andy and Luke wander off the beaten track, and out of the top flight. The plan was for Andy to experience some fourth-tier football in Wuppertal but, as Uli Hesse (or Pyrolator) will tell you, it always rains in Wuppertal. Undeterred, Andy makes the most of his trip to Cologne to take in a game at Regionalliga West side Fortuna Köln, spending the afternoon on the open terrace with home supporter Axel, who’s been watching Fortuna since 1973, as they take on Schalke II. We talk about following football in the fourth tier, what it’s like playing top-flight clubs’ B teams and Oliver Kahn’s ringing endorsement of Südstadion. It rains torrentially here too, so we’re not missing out on anything. Then both Andy and Luke chase down Sunday lunch - copious helpings of currywurst, naturally - with an early afternoon trip to Bochum, where they dive deep into German fan culture. We hear about what makes Bochum stand out in such a crowded football region from Bochum ultra and filmmaker Gerrit and then witness an eight-goal thriller, perhaps the most thrilling match of our weekend.***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. The Blizzard: Sheffield Wednesday 3-4 Tottenham, 1994

There’s a Tottenham flavour in today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. We’re joined by The Athletic’s Jack Pitt-Brooke to discuss the opening day of the 1994/95 Premiership season, as Spurs took on Sheffield Wednesday. In his first full season in charge, Ossie Ardiles’ Spurs side looked to establish an exciting and intoxicating brand of football based on the technical skill of the European talent they acquired that summer. Ilie Dumitrescu and Jurgen Klinsmann were among those in this new-look, attacking Spurs side that played out a cracking match against Trevor Francis’ Sheffield Wednesday – featuring seven goals and one of the most infamous celebrations in modern English football. For more stories from the annals of football history, visit www.theblizzard.co.uk to explore their archives that contain over 700 articles of stories just like this one!***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. The Preview Show: Eric Dier takes centre stage, Liverpool lose again, and Steve Bruce goes from strength to strength

E

An action packed round of FA Cup fixtures gave us drama at Spurs,  Chelsea exposing Jurgen Klopp as yet another bald fraud and a huge upset as Arsenal beat Portsmouth. Newcastle made it through too! They never do that! And on top of their win we also got to see 59 year-old Chris Waddle’s cool new hair. Away from the pitch, Pete promises to release some music aimed at kids while also making a niche request for some fanfic; we learn of Delia Smith making Daniel Farke feel at home with the personal touch; and try as best we can to figure out where the midlands is. Well! Nigel Pearson and Watford shocked us all by showing that this Liverpool side can be beaten – though in doing so they did shut down some of the little remaining Narrative of the season. All the same, Pete was at the game with a Japanese hotelier he knows and by all accounts a great time was had. Elsewhere, Daniel Farke and Norwich turned the tables and got a surprise win over Leicester, Jose Mourinho bemoaned a lack of fairness and Man City won yet another Carabao Cup. We also learn about the complicated eagle loan market, christen the Milk Shake Boys and plead that you send us meat. Search ‘Football Ramble Daily’ on social media to find us, and email us here: [email protected]. The Preview Show: The Carabao Cup final is upon us, Bayern give Chelsea a lesson, and Liverpool are four wins away

It was big win for the little guy yesterday, as Man City beat Real Madrid at the Bernabeu – but will the energy they exerted give Aston Villa a chance in Sunday’s Carabao EFL League Cup final? Will underwhelming hackers ruin Pep Guardiola’s preparations? We just don’t know. It is impossible for us to know. Back in the Premier League Liverpool take their war machine to Watford, laying the foundations for an intriguing set of potential narratives re: where they actually win the title. Brighton vs Crystal Palace is also happening, so naturally there’s a lot of discussion about murderous seagulls and ducks doing stand up comedy. Elsewhere, Jon Bon Jovi announces himself as an ITK, we hear some always welcome immature translations and we look back at some crass goalkeeping tactics of yesteryear.Search ‘Football Ramble Daily’ on social media to find us, and email us here: [email protected] ***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. Jules & Andy: Was the Premier League ready for VAR, are officials inadequately prepared, and how does FFP work in practice?

After another shambolic weekend of VAR, there was only one thing we could start with on today’s episode of Jules & Andy. As officials mishandle baffling clear decisions, we discuss the effect these mistakes has on players’ most visceral emotions while on the pitch and the lack of training for match officials. We also speak to former Premier League referee Peter Walton, who wonders whether the Premier League was even ready for VAR this season due to this lack of training and understanding. It’s not all VAR chat, though, as we take another look at FFP in light of UEFA’s decision to ban Manchester City from European competition. The Blizzard: Milan 2-1 Benfica, 1963

Today we take a look back at a game of genuine historical importance in European football history. On today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we’re joined by The Independent’s Miguel Delaney to discuss the 1963 European Cup final between Milan and Benfica. This pivotal moment in the history of the European Cup cannot be understated; it represented two dominant teams at opposite ends of their respective cycles. Milan arrived as purveyors of a free-scoring, but still pragmatic, catenaccio and regarded themselves as significant underdogs. But, with their manager Nereo Rocco’s pre-match antics on the bus helping to lighten the mood, two goals from José Altafini denied Benfica their third consecutive European Cup. This was an early example of modernity in football tactics; a team winning on the strength of a tactical system with eleven components, rather than relying on eleven individuals beating their opposite man. Miguel's article for The Blizzard about this match is available here: https://www.theblizzard.co.uk/article/ac-milan-2-benfica-1For more stories from the annals of football history, visit www.theblizzard.co.uk to explore their archives that contain over 700 articles of stories just like this one! ***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. The Preview Show: Champions League blows for Liverpool and Spurs, Leicester take on Man City, and Chelsea are having a wobble

It's a big week in the ol’ football, as European football resumes and Big Weng steps in to do something about the offside rule – something we’re all frankly a little unsure about. We even saw Liverpool lose, as Atletico took a 1-0 lead into their second leg match at Anfield, insulting the place as they did so. Let’s see how that pans out. That’s not all we saw; we saw Richard Blackwood haunting Spurs; we saw Barcelona cleverly manipulating time itself; we saw a bitten penis. And if even that isn’t enough, Cristiano Ronaldo and Pingu drop in to say hello. Search ‘Football Ramble Daily’ on social media to find us, and email us here: [email protected] ***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. We’re heading back to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil for today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. The Guardian’s Jonathan Liew joins us to discuss the Netherlands’ 5-1 dismantling of Spain, as “Louis Van Gaal created something he loved - and then destroyed it.”Spain arrived at this tournament with the same formula that saw them win the preceding three as the likes of Xavi, Sergio Busquets and Andrés Iniesta looked to dominate possession. They took the lead and controlled the early exchanges in El Salvador but, with Louis van Gaal switching to a back three for this game, his Netherlands side took advantage of Spain's lethargic midfield. On The Continent: Addressing European football's imbalance, Iker Casillas' presidential bid, and Jurgen Klinsmann slips off into the night

We welcome another esteemed debutant to today's episode of On The Continent, as Luke Moore and Andy Brassell are joined by The Independent’s Miguel Delaney! In light of Miguel’s recent piece, ‘How football became broken beyond repair’, we discuss the current imbalances within European football. As the top clubs earn huge swathes of money from Champions League performances and their international reach, competitiveness is being eroded across the vast majority of Europe’s leagues – we assess how this damage has been done and what can be done to remedy it. We also mourn the end of Jurgen Klinsmann’s totemic 10-week stint in charge of Hertha Berlin, as he moves upstairs, and wonder what he can provide in his new ambassadorial role. There’s also chat on Iker Casillas’ bid for the Spanish FA presidency and some cracking games of the week!***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. Ramble Meets... Clyde Best

We welcome a footballing icon to today’s episode of Ramble Meets… as Andy is joined by one of England's first black footballers, former West Ham striker Clyde Best! After choosing football over cricket in his native Bermuda, and becoming involved in the national side when he was just fifteen, Clyde flew across to London for a trial with West Ham United and went on to score 58 goals over seven seasons. Clyde sits with Andy to discuss the horrific racist abuse from the terraces and how teammates like Bobby Moore and Harry Redknapp helped him through it. Clyde also talks about some of his favourite moments from playing in England, gives some advice to the current generation of black footballers and reminisces about managing the Bermudan national team. This episode was recorded on 5th December 2019.Clyde's autobiography, 'The Acid Test: A Life in Football', is available to purchase here:https://www.amazon.co.uk/Acid-Test-Life-Football/dp/1909245364***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. Jules & Andy: Watching our teams as fans, Sheffield United’s European dream, and managerial legacies

We’re back with another episode of Jules & Andy on Football Ramble Daily! Jules managed to catch this weekend’s Brighton game as a fan, so there’s chat about the emotional strains of watching your team from the stands rather than in a work capacity. There’s also talk about Sheffield United’s march towards Europe and how brilliant that would be considering their comparatively modest status, despite some saying it would be bad for the club. And as Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds potentially start their alarmingly predictable stutter, we discuss managerial legacies and why some coaches can’t seem to shake them off.Get in touch via twitter: @julesbreach @andybrassell @footballramble or via email: [email protected]!***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods.
