The Ramble: Ancelotti’s Everton march on, Watford slip up, and Leeds wobble
It may have taken 34 Premier League games - and Jordan Pickford having one of his moments - but CHRISTIAN BENTEKE IS BACK! That’s what we’ve come to during this whole winter break thing. It will be worth it when Dominic Calvert-Lewin leads England to glory at Euro 2020.Of course, football exists outside the Premier League. Sammy Ameobi's making Leeds think they too may continue to exist outside the Premier League next season, as Nottingham Forest grabbed the win.On top of all that, Louis Armstrong drops in, Nigel Pearson’s globe reveals a dark past and listener Damian Cunningham signs off on his mad reign of terror. The Blizzard: Celtic 2-3 Porto, 2003
“José Mourinho’s side hold on, and they’ve won the UEFA Cup! In this meeting of two former European champions, it is Porto who come out on top in Seville.”Yes, for today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we’re heading back to the 2003 UEFA Cup between Porto and Celtic alongside Kieran Canning, journalist at Agence France-Presse. This frenetic game brough the curtain down on Celtic’s most successful trophyless season, after losing the league by a point and the league cup final the week before. 80,000 fans (and one Jonathan Wilson) descended on Seville in the searing heat to see Martin O’Neill’s team take on a hugely impressive Porto side managed by the Special One himself. For more stories from the annals of football history, visit www.theblizzard.co.uk to explore their archives that contain over 700 articles of stories just like this one!***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. The Preview Show: FA Cup replays happened, the winter break has come, and a chopper was seen
We’re back, with our most immature show of the season! If a Newcastle fan fires up the willycopter on live TV then what other choice do we have?Though the winter break is here we’ve still had a surprisingly fun week, with the aforementioned chopper-chopper, Wayne Rooney rolling back the years in the FA Cup and Luke’s pilgrimage to Anfield’s Roy Hodgson statue. And we still have time to hear from our worst listener! Listen please. On The Continent: Tensions rise at Barcelona, Roberto Soldado's back among the goals, and Gennaro Gattuso works on his night moves
We’re covering every single blade of European football grass on today’s episode of On The Continent, as Andy Brassell is joined in the studio by Lars Sivertsen and Nicky Bandini! We start with the recent high profile troubles at Barcelona, as Lionel Messi responded on social media to Eric Abidal’s outburst. There’s also time for a wider look at the Catalan side’s struggles over the last few seasons, as repeated signings haven’t worked out and fans intermittent fears that Lionel Messi’s final years are being wasted. Elsewhere, Roberto Soldado grabbed two goals to take Granada into the semi-finals of the Copa Del Rey at the expense of Valencia, who themselves were left infuriated by VAR.We then swing over to Germany for a look at this week’s DFB-Pokal as elite own-foot-shooters Borussia Dortmund lost 3-2 to Werder Bremen, despite a cracking debut goal from American prodigy Giovanni Reyna. There’s all that plus the virtues of shooting from impossible angles, Gennaro Gattuso’s late night whispers and the upcoming Milan derby!***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. Jules & Andy: What next for Olivier Giroud, Newcastle's takeover rumours return, and office football chat
With February here, we’re taking a look at some of the fallout from a fairly lively January transfer window on today's episode of Jules & Andy!We begin with marooned striker Olivier Giroud who, after touted moves both within the Premier League and overseas never flourished, he remains stuck in the stands at Chelsea. We discuss where it's gone wrong for the Frenchman and how he may be able to squeeze himself into Frank Lampard's squad. We then take a look at the suspiciously timely rumours of a takeover at Newcastle United and run the rule over their own new loan signings. There's all of that, plus a load of correspondence – including a dramatic turn in the "Shrews" vs "Shrows"-bury debate.Get in touch via twitter: @julesbreach @andybrassell @footballramble or via email: [email protected]!***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. The Ramble: Liverpool go 22 points clear, Jose vs Pep has spice, and more woe for West Ham
Liverpool are brilliant etc etc. What more can be said of them at this point? We bow to our new Scouse overlords. Further down the depths of the table Man City got Mourinhoed in North London, West Ham West Hammed themselves in east London and Nigel Pearson’s Watford are dead after they turned a 2-0 lead into a 3-2 defeat against 10-man Everton. They are dead. This cannot be stressed enough. Dead. They are going to wish they’d never been born. We also have time for a cameo from Maurizio Sarri, to be mean about young Theo Walcott and to hear yet more of your utterly baffling suggestions as to how to “improve” the domestic cups. The Blizzard: Tottenham 1-2 Arsenal, 1987
On today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we’re looking back at the heady days of the 1987 Littlewoods Cup. John Cross, the Mirror’s chief football writer, joins us to remember the semi-final second leg replay between Tottenham and Arsenal! With Arsenal languishing in comparative mediocrity by the early 1980s, George Graham’s arrival begun a revolution at the club – and nowhere was this typified more than in this game. Arsenal, spurred on by the half-time announcement at White Hart Lane detailing how Spurs fans could buy tickets to the final, fought back to level the second leg and force this replay. John remembers this incredible game and its crackling atmosphere as David Pleat’s free-scoring Spurs side took on Graham’s resilient Arsenal for a place in the final against Liverpool, as well as the amazing story of David Pleat giving George Graham a lift home after a cup of tea and a sandwich! James Maddison chipping off at referees, Portsmouth drawing Arsenal in the FA Cup, Everton telling Barcelona where to go with their paltry £85m bit for Richarlison!Incredibly we still find the time to talk about whaling, UB40 and Death Grips, while Mr. Manhattan postpones his holiday for the benefit of us all. On The Continent: Madrid derby, the race for Italy's top four, and The Barber of Leipzig
EGreetings OTCers! It's time for yet another episode of our European football show and today Luke and Andy is joined by Spanish football expert David Cartlidge to discuss all the big stories from around the continent. This week we look ahead to a big derby in Spain as Atletico, beset with muscle injury worries, head to the Bernabeu. What's become of El Cholo and his team this season? Meanwhile, in Italy, there's a race on for the top four, but Torino most certainly aren't in it. Roma, Atalanta and perhaps even Milan are though. Can Zlatan do the unthinkable and help this Milan side actually achieve something?Yep, there's all this and more - Leipzig's Ralf Rangnick getting annoyed at a celebrity barber, Hatem Ben Arfa making an appearance alongside the original Ronaldo, and Steven Bergwijn rocking up at Spurs. Ramble Meets... Joe Palmer
On today’s Ramble Meets… episode, Andy Brassell sits down with Joe Palmer, CEO of AFC Wimbledon, to discuss his fascinating career in football.Joe can trace his obsession for football back to the 1987 FA Cup final where his beloved Spurs lost to Coventry, and his love for the game has never wavered. After beginning his career at a PR agency selling stories for MUTV, Joe eventually found himself as the Executive Director of Strategy, Commerce and Marketing at Shakhtar Donetsk. He talks Andy through his incredible time at the club that began with Champions League knockout football and emerging stars, and ended with being evacuated from a developing war zone. Jules & Andy: A mid-season break, West Ham's struggles and can Liverpool go unbeaten?
It’s Tuesday, and you know what that means: it’s time for another episode of Jules & Andy on Football Ramble Daily! We begin today’s show with a chat about the upcoming ‘mid-season break' that the Premier League is trialling, where it will split one round of matches over two weekends to give players a rest. Will this help reduce player fatigue as we head towards the Euros? Or will it simply result in a piling up of fixtures elsewhere? We try to answer those questions, and discuss Jürgen Klopp’s comments on the matter.Elsewhere, we look ahead to an intriguing midweek clash between West Ham and Liverpool. We discuss whether the Reds can go a season unbeaten and work out how West Ham might escape their current troubles. The Ramble: Shrewsbury rock Liverpool, Man United are BACK again, and it’s time for Newcastle’s annual takeover talk
Y’all ready for this? On today’s Milk Football Ramble we say the word “Cumdog” a frankly uncomfortable amount, but Shrewsbury’s Jason Cummings has given himself the nickname, scored twice to bring his team back from 2-0 down against Liverpool and so has given us no other choice. Elsewhere in the cup, the Bilić is back as Slaven’s West Brom knocked out his former club West Ham, Newcastle put on a show for their potential new owners and Man United turned on the style. As well as all that there are Evil Fulham fans, Sir Alex Ferguson’s legacy and that word “Cumdog” again. Urgh. The Blizzard: Liverpool 2-1 Blackburn, 1995
On today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard we head back to another epic Premiership finale. The Irish Times' and Second Captains’ Ken Early joins us to remember Blackburn’s title win on the final day of the 1994/95 season, despite a 2-1 defeat at Anfield. Blackburn needed to win or hope title rivals Manchester United didn’t beat West Ham, to clinch their first title in more than 80 years. Many Liverpool fans at Anfield found themselves in the curious position of wanting their team to lose to Blackburn and thus denying their bitter rivals the title, as their treasured son Kenny Dalglish sat in the Blackburn dugout. Ken, Marcus and Jonathan remember the buildup to this pivotal final day that was the culmination of this season-long battle between the definitive Premier League juggernaut and their new challengers looking to halt a third successive title triumph.Fancy getting in touch? Andy joins Marcus and Jonathan to discuss Juventus’ spectacular 3-1 win over Real Madrid in the 2003 Champions League semi-final.The game was played at the notoriously derided Stadio delle Alpi on the outskirts of Turin. This, however, was different to the usually under-attended matches at Juventus’ ground, as Marcelo Lippi’s side played in front of rapturous home support. The Blizzard: Everton 3-2 Wimbledon, 1994
We’re headed up to Liverpool for today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, for a classic escape from relegation. On the docket today is the final day of the 1993/94 season, as Everton had their last roll of the dice against Wimbledon, and we’re joined by author and deCoubertin Books principle James Corbett! After a fantastic period of success in the 1980’s, the turn of the decade brought about tougher times for the Toffees. Everton were actually one of the key five drivers in forming the then-Premiership but looked ill-equipped to deal with the change, after many senior players followed Howard Kendell out the door in the late 80s and early 90s. There were four other teams in the mix for relegation as the final round of fixtures arrived and, after going 2-0 down against Wimbledon, all hope looked lost - but Everton performed the impossible. We discuss a miraculous comeback on that nerve-shredding afternoon at Goodison Park, as fans in the adjoining Stanley Park climbed various trees in hopes of watching one of the most significant ever matches in their club’s history.Fancy getting in touch? The Preview Show: Liverpool visit Spurs, injuries ahoy for Roy, and Southampton travel to Leicester with revenge in mind
The goings on at Man United are going on so much that they’ve reduced Sir Alex Ferguson to lonely red wine sessions in his old office, which may or may not be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s current office. They face Norwich at the weekend in a fixture more intriguing than it has any right to be. Spurs also host Liverpool, which should be a spicy one. Will we see Jose Mourinho attempt to park the bus? Probably, yes. As well as discussing the upcoming action, we take some necessary detours through ear irrigation, Pizza Hut’s social media team and a particularly furious emails section. We've all got exclusive new music from Pete Donaldson. On The Continent: Milan blandness, Coupe de France madness, and Dries Mertens' sadness
We’re back in the studio with some more continental content, as Luke Moore and Andy Brassell are joined by The Guardian’s Nicky Bandini! We begin, as the man himself would expect, with Zlatan Ibrahimović’s largely uneventful debut for Milan. Nicky discusses how his leadership off the pitch might be more valuable than his contribution on it, as well as assessing Stefano Pioli’s struggles in the dugout. We also mention some struggles down south, as Gennaro Gattuso hasn’t had the best start at Napoli and club legend Dries Mertens now find himself resigned to the subs bench. Elsewhere, Andy runs us through Porto’s impressive win over Sporting and their impressive boss Sérgio Conceição. There’s also some chat on perhaps Europe’s best cup competition, the Coupe de France, and a preview of some cracking Games of the Week. Table-toppers Inter against free-scoring Atalanta, anyone? Jules & Andy: The FA Cup's dwindling magic, how the tournament can find it again, and some potential January transfers
Has the FA Cup lost some of its sparkle? What are the big teams’ attitudes towards the tournament? These are a few of the questions we’re trying to answer on today’s brand new episode of Jules & Andy! After a mixed set of results from the third round this weekend, we debate how significant a place the Cup still holds in football’s television-dominated environment. We suggest some ways to help recapture the magic of past FA Cups, including moving the semi-finals away from Wembley and incentivising teams to take it more seriously, while Jules recounts some of her favourite memories of watching it as a fan. Elsewhere, we discuss some of the potential movers and shakers in this January’s transfer window, as Arsenal need some new personnel in defence and Manchester United could do with some creativity.Got something you want us to discuss? The Blizzard: Ireland 1-0 Netherlands, 2001
You join us in the Emerald Isle for today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. We’re taking a look at a historic afternoon for Irish football from 2001, alongside JOE’s Dion Fanning! The Netherlands arrived at Lansdowne Road with qualification for the 2002 World Cup on the line, while Mick McCarthy’s men had enjoyed a hugely successful qualifying campaign. Louis van Gaal had began to drift from his traditional 4-3-3 philosophy by this point, after a tough spell at Barcelona, and as this game slipped through their fingers he even finished the game playing four strikers. In contrast, Dion remembers how this game was perhaps “the last time Irish football felt united and moving in the same direction.” The Green Army were still the usual underdogs but, with a fantastic goal from Jason McAteer and a stalwart performance from captain Roy Keane, they secured World Cup qualification in front of 35,000 at Lansdowne Road.Fancy getting in touch? The Ramble: David Moyes returns to West Ham, Arsenal lose but improve, and VAR is rubbish again. And again. And again…
David Moyes is back in charge at West Ham as they once again ask him to ferry them to safety! Is anything surprising any more? No, not really. Elsewhere in London, Arsenal and Chelsea played out an energetic game that felt like a victory for Arsenal - despite it being a victory for Chelsea - because they weren’t booed off. Small victories and all that. There was also lots of action in the Championship, Steven Gerrard’s Rangers got one over on Celtic and we chat thrusting, IKEA stadiums and cramp. The Blizzard: Liverpool 2-1 Arsenal, 2004
Joining us on today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, is The Independent’s Vithushan Ehantharajah! His chose today's game based on pure, glorious nostalgia: Liverpool 2-1 Arsenal from 2004.This game, with its mix of technical ability and unrelenting pace, was a tremendous advert for the Premier League. Arsenal’s performances were beginning to falter after coming off their invincible season, though this was still only their second defeat in 55 league matches. The goal they did score, a truly glorious one, served as a fleeting mirage of that previous Arsenal. Their opponents came flying out the traps, with Xabi Alonso particularly impressive, and played their part in a classic Premier League affair. And it was all rounded off by Neil Mellor’s astonishing goal deep into injury time! Fancy getting in touch? It’s Christmas Eve, and there’s a brand new episode of Jules & Andy wrapped up under the tree! We discuss the remarkable achievements of Chris Wilder and his players as the newly-promoted side sit fifth in the table. We also praise Southampton and their improved performances - and how it all could have been so different had Ralph Hasenhüttl been sacked after their 9-0 thrashing. And we finish with Leicester’s final throw of their title-racing dice, as they host newly-crowned world champions Liverpool. The Ramble: Liverpool are champions of the world, Lampard bests Mourinho, and Manchester win the battle of the Citys
Given that they’re so far ahead, Liverpool took the weekend off to go and win another trophy in Doha, while Riyad Mahrez came back to haunt Leicester as Brendyball came up short against Man City. Elsewhere, Nigel Pearson’s revitalised Watford were too much for the ghost of Man United. Forget all that though, because Miguel Almiron scored! The Blizzard: Red Star 2-2 Bayern Munich, 1991
On today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we’re looking back at an absolutely phenomenal match - one that Jonathan describes as potentially his favourite ever game of football. The Athletic’s Rafa Honigstein joins us to represent the other half of this fixture, as Bayern Munich take on Red Star Belgrade in the second leg of the 1991 European Cup semi-finals.Political instability formed an all-encompassing backdrop to this game, with Slovenia and Croatia both declaring independence unilaterally in the months leading up to this game, and it was built up as a momentous footballing occasion. The 1991 European Cup was a tournament both sides were desperate to win; Bayern were obsessed with winning the European Cup again after 1976, and had suffered some traumatic final defeats in subsequent matches, while the Yugoslavian national side had notoriously lost a range of finals in the latter half of the 20th Century. With a home defeat in the first leg, Bayern were praying for a miracle - as we discover, the game more than lived up to this sizeable billing.Fancy getting in touch? The Preview Show: Everton host Arsenal in the New Manager Derby, Leicester & Man City battle for third, and it’s Mourinho vs Lampard at Spurs
What a week for new managers, as Mikel Arteta takes the reins at Arsenal (probably at the time of recording) and Carlo Ancelotti rocks up at Everton (possibly etc etc). Bouncy new managers galore! There’s even more to get excited about as Leicester put Brendyball to the test against assistant-managerless Man City, while Jose Mourinho’s Spurs host Frank Lampard’s Chelsea in a sentence that is still new enough to seem really weird. On The Continent: Dortmund and Leipzig slug it out, El Clásico ends goalless, and Goal Bae returns
The Fussball-Meisters are back again for a brand new episode of On The Continent. There’s a whole load of stuff on the docket today, and we begin with last night’s El Clásico. It was the first goalless tie between the two sides since 2002, and Real Madrid were (predictably) unhappy with some of the officiating. We discuss Zinedine Zidane’s deserved public praise for Gareth Bale after his impressive display, as well as Luka Jović’s struggles in the Spanish capital. We then take stock of a crazy Bundesliga game Andy saw earlier this week, as a Jadon Sancho-inspired Dortmund somehow didn’t emerge victorious from a cracking 3-3 with RB Leipzig. We also celebrate the goalscoring return of original OTC Goalbae Patrik Schick, before looking ahead to Leipzig’s intriguing matchup against Spurs in the Champions League and previewing the draw more generally.James also talks about his recent chat with Max Allegri, and we have some cracking Games of the Week lined up. Jules admits how frustrating it was to not taking all three points from Selhurst Park and gives her thoughts on the Seagulls' mixed results. After that, we turn our attentions to potential changes in football broadcasting, after studies have found that television audience numbers have taken a notable hit over recent seasons. The Ramble: Bournemouth shock Chelsea, Norwich blunt Leicester, and Man City beat Arsenal in their sleep
Us again, after another weekend of football. What a game this is. Mikel Arteta may have had a preview of his very own Ghost of Christmas Future, as Man City brushed past apolitical-Arsenal on autopilot. Leicester weren’t “top enough” to keep up with Liverpool, as they were held by Norwich, and Big Dunc Ferguson kept up the good work with a point at Old Trafford, even if poor Moise Kean suffered the indignity of being a sub for a sub. As well as all this we muse on sleepy voiced sat-navs, “loopy behaviour” and wearable Pete Donaldsons. They’re not yet in production but if there’s enough demand we’ll probably look into it. The Blizzard: Cambridge United 5-1 Bristol City, 1990
On today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we’re joined by the leader of that mob over at The Guardian: it’s Football Weekly host Max Rushden! He’s here to talk about Cambridge United. Obviously. In fairness, Max brings a cracking game to the table: Cambridge United 5-1 Bristol City from the 1989/90 FA Cup. This was the start of a hugely impressive run of form for the U’s, as they went on to gain promotion and reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup - feats they repeated a year later. They built this success on legendary manager John Beck’s genius philosophy of: 1) every marginal gain is a necessity and 2) pump the ball down the channels. This philosophy took Bristol City to pieces and dragged Cambridge all the way to the verge of the Premier League’s first ever season two years later.Fancy getting in touch? On The Continent: Champions League competitiveness, disappointment for Inter, and Gennaro Gattuso gets back in the mix
The gang are finally back together for another episode of On The Continent! With the Champions League group stage wrapped up, we assess the competitiveness of a tournament that has no teams from outside the traditional top 5 leagues in its knockout stages. RB Salzburg were one of the underdogs who came closest to qualifying, but couldn’t get the result they needed against Liverpool. We discuss some of their other bright young stars aside from Erling Braut Håland, as Liverpool are reportedly lining up a move for Japanese attacker Takumi Minamino. Elsewhere, after their elimination from the tournament, James gives a thorough assessment of Inter’s performances this season and how far they still have to go under Antonio Conte. Andy brings us a Lyon update after their laboured win over nine-man Nîmes, and Gennaro Gattuso is the new Napoli boss. We repeat: Gennaro Gattuso is the new Napoli boss. It’s tremendous stuff, it really is.Correspondence?
