Pay close attention to how she explains exactly how having poor kidney function or kidney damage affects our melatonin and vitamin D production. If kidney is not working properly this MAY be one of the reasons we are struggling with sleep or experiencing low mood and/or depression. What we love about Robin is her passion on informing and educating physician's on EARLY INTERVENTION for increasing kidney function and her take on what she calls Renoology and what that involves. We know you will enjoy hearing her recommendations for how someone with kidney damage should eat and what they benefit from removing from their food plan. We thought it was important to discuss the vegan approach to Food Addiction Recovery because there are many in our community who eat this way too. What's MOST important is that find what works for YOU and what is true for YOU. What we learned in this interview is that these two food camps are not so far apart. Her particular areas of interest and expertise are public health dietary guidelines (especially dietary fat), nutrition, and obesity. Zoe has a BA and MA from Cambridge University (economics/maths) and in 2016, she was awarded a Ph.D. in public health nutrition. Zoe's thesis title was "An examination of the randomized controlled trial and epidemiological evidence for the introduction of dietary fat recommendations in 1977 and 1983: A systematic review and meta-analysis." Zoe is known for 1) Being the first person to examine the evidence base for the dietary fat guidelines at the time of their introduction (US 1977 and UK 1983). Discovering that not only was the randomized controlled trial evidence NON-supportive of the introduced guidelines but that fewer than 2,500 sick men had been studied in the process. 2) Coining the phrase 'the Eatbadly plate', which became 'the Eatbadly guide' in March 2016. 3) Devoting 7 chapters of my 2010 obesity book to dissecting calories generally and the 3,500 calorie myth particularly. 4) "Why do you overeat? When all you want is to be slim". This became the title of her 2004 (revised 2013) book, which is still unique in explaining physical reasons for overeating and how to overcome these. 5) Journal article dissection: Zoe receives requests from all over the world (many from my own heroes) asking if I can dissect a particular paper, which has led to daft media headlines e.g. margarine is better than butter. S1 Ep 49Episode 49: Prof. Tim Noakes
Dr. Tim Noakes is a South African scientist and an emeritus professor in the Division of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine at the University of Cape Town. He is also a member of the National Research Foundation (South Africa), which lists him as one of their highest-rated members. He has run more than 70 marathons and ultramarathons and is the author of several books on exercise and diet. He is known for his work in sports science and for his support of a low-carbohydrate, high-fat (LCHF) diet, as set out in his books The Real Meal Revolution and Lore of Nutrition: Challenging Conventional Dietary Beliefs. Noakes is an advocate of a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet, often referred to in South Africa as the "Noakes" or "Banting" diet. Noakes has characterized mainstream dietary advice as "genocide". In February 2014 a registered dietician complained to the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) that Noakes tweeted to a mother that she should wean her baby onto low-carbohydrate, high-fat foods, which he described as real foods. The HPCSA held a hearing about the allegation against Noakes over the next few years. Controversially, on 28 October 2016, the HPSCA incorrectly released a statement announcing that Noakes had been found guilty of misconduct. In a second press release issued over three hours later, the HPSCA apologized for the mistake. Noakes was cleared of misconduct in April 2017. The HPSCA lost its appeal in June 2018. Noakes co-wrote the 2017 book Lore of Nutrition with journalist Marika Sboros. In it, Noakes describes his Damascene conversion to low-carbohydrate dieting, explores how the lipid hypothesis is the "biggest mistake in modern medicine" and details his struggles with the medical establishment. Noakes has written several books detailing his research in sports science and nutrition. A selected bibliography is given below. To enhance the knowledge of the world around her, she completed a degree in human rights and social justice at Southern Methodist University. Her graduate studies degree allowed her to travel to learn more about Sugar Land 95 and to tour sugar plantations. She believes the combined experience of nursing and human rights and social justice allows her to use a unique lens on how sugar has impacted African-American communities since slavery. Since the completion of Bitten Jonsson's SUGAR certification, her beliefs about healing individuals, groups, and communities of color are much more refined. She believes wholeheartedly that food sources, African American women, and the hidden harm of sugar are the three most overlooked sources of healing African American communities. Therefore, her life's work is centered around sugar awareness and creating dialogue change that will empower and promote healing in communities of color. For far too long, vulnerable communities have been stigmatized. Shun believes it's time to heal all of our communities as a whole. Our Swedish Sugar Guru, Bitten Jonsson, is back today to speak with Dr. Vera Tarman about the hotly debated topic of FASTING. We believe that fasting is a powerful medical intervention to be used cautiously. You will hear Vera and Bitten discuss their personal and professional journeys, the difference between Time Restricted Eating (TRE) and Fasting, why individuals with Food Addiction should avoid fasting for long periods of time, why we shouldn't practice intermittent fasting or time-restricted eating in the beginning (*hint: it has to do with understanding our hunger cues and energy levels), how Bitten incorporates Biochemical Repair with clients, why we should avoid eating after 6 pm, why Addiction Medicine vetoes other interventions, and their plea to other professionals to learn about Food Addiction. Bitten is a close friend and colleague to our whole podcast team. She is a registered nurse, addiction specialist, a contributor to the Diet Doctor website AND She is the founder of Bitten's Addiction. Her mission is to spread knowledge about sugar addiction and to teach and train professionals how to screen, assess, evaluate and diagnose sugar addiction using the SUGAR tool she helped develop. Through this process, professionals can help individuals detox from their "drug foods" and find long-lasting recovery. S1 Ep 20Episode 20: Dr. Robert Cywes
Dr. Robert Cywes specializes in Weight Management and Bariatric Surgery for adults and adolescents in West Palm Beach, Florida. He has been doing bariatric surgery for 18 years performing over 8000 surgeries. His medical training began in Cape Town, South Africa where he received his medical degree from The University of Cape Town. In 1989, Dr. Cywes moved to North America and completed a year-long residency in Pediatric Surgery at Ohio State University's Columbus Children's Hospital. Then he moved to Canada where he completed his general surgery residency and specialized in Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of Toronto. Also, Dr. Cywes earned a Ph.D. in Liver Carbohydrate Metabolism and the effect of glucose metabolism on liver transplant immunology. After completing his pediatric surgery fellowship at the University of Michigan's C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, Dr. Cywes was appointed as an Assistant Professor of Pediatric and Fetal Surgery at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee where he did hepatic stem cell research. During this time, Dr. Cywes became increasingly interested in adolescent obesity and the impact of the liver and metabolic syndrome on young patients. Dr. Cywes' research led to a comprehensive understanding of the toxicity of chronic excessive carbohydrate consumption as the primary cause of obesity and so-called obesity-related comorbidities. He became interested in developing a clinical program to treat obese patients using this knowledge. Dr. Cywes relocated to Jacksonville, Florida where he joined the Department of Pediatric Surgery at the Nemours Children's Clinic and Wolfson Children's Hospital. This led to a national meeting in Jacksonville where guidelines for adolescent obesity surgery were established. In 2004, Dr. Cywes established JSAPA to continue his work in both adolescent and adult obesity treatment and surgery, and in 2013 opened a practice in Palm Beach County, Florida. He now works with a highly experienced team of professionals from a variety of medical sub-specialties to better care for obese patients. He has developed the practice into an internationally recognized Center of Excellence for obesity surgery. The practice uses a cognitive behavioral therapy approach that addresses carbohydrate addiction and bariatric surgery to help patients manage their obesity long term. Based on his extensive clinical research and observations, Dr. Cywes lectures internationally regarding the physiological impact of carbohydrate consumption as the primary cause of the current Chronic Non-Communicable Disease (CNCDs) epidemic. He also lectures on the behavioral aspects of carbohydrate addiction as the cause of obesity and obesity-related co-morbidities and the use of substance abuse methodology, rather than a diet and exercise approach, to the effective long-term treatment of obesity. In today's episode we discuss: Why Dr. Cywes refers to this disease as CARB ADDICTION vs Food Addiction. Why people "fail" How parenting styles impact our relationship with substances and behaviors Dr. Cywes speaks to parents with children in the home How treatment goals are tailored to each patient How to use a "bridge" tool "Nobody needs surgery as an alternative to what we are doing" Why how much you eat in a day doesn't matter to Dr. Cywes The importance of restoring satiety How Carb Addiction Recovery is DIFFERENT from dieting Dr. Cywes talks about the pushback he has received What he would tell his younger self about Carb Addiction/Carb Addiction Recovery Follow Dr. Cywes: IG: @carbaddictiondoc and @carbaddictionmom YouTube: CarbAddictionDoc Text/WhatsApp: 561 517 0642 Website: https://obesityunderstood.com/ The content of our show is educational only.
