S1 Ep 28Episode 28 Shun Foreman
Shun Foreman has been a registered nurse for twenty-two years. As she reflects on her career, she has always sought ways to become more effective in vulnerable communities. To enhance the knowledge of the world around her, she completed a degree in human rights and social justice at Southern Methodist University. Her graduate studies degree allowed her to travel to learn more about Sugar Land 95 and to tour sugar plantations. She believes the combined experience of nursing and human rights and social justice allows her to use a unique lens on how sugar has impacted African-American communities since slavery. Since the completion of Bitten Jonsson's SUGAR certification, her beliefs about healing individuals, groups, and communities of color are much more refined. She believes wholeheartedly that food sources, African American women, and the hidden harm of sugar are the three most overlooked sources of healing African American communities. Therefore, her life's work is centered around sugar awareness and creating dialogue change that will empower and promote healing in communities of color. For far too long, vulnerable communities have been stigmatized. Shun believes it's time to heal all of our communities as a whole. To put her vision into action, she started, Sisters Breaking the Bonds of Sugar where women of color can come together to discuss how sugar relates to their history and their health. S1 Ep 23Episode 23: Bitten and Vera
Our Swedish Sugar Guru, Bitten Jonsson, is back today to speak with Dr. Vera Tarman about the hotly debated topic of FASTING. We believe that fasting is a powerful medical intervention to be used cautiously. You will hear Vera and Bitten discuss their personal and professional journeys, the difference between Time Restricted Eating (TRE) and Fasting, why individuals with Food Addiction should avoid fasting for long periods of time, why we shouldn't practice intermittent fasting or time-restricted eating in the beginning (*hint: it has to do with understanding our hunger cues and energy levels), how Bitten incorporates Biochemical Repair with clients, why we should avoid eating after 6 pm, why Addiction Medicine vetoes other interventions, and their plea to other professionals to learn about Food Addiction. Bitten is a close friend and colleague to our whole podcast team. She is a registered nurse, addiction specialist, a contributor to the Diet Doctor website AND She is the founder of Bitten's Addiction. She has been helping people recover from sugar/flour/processed food addiction for nearly 30 years. Inspired by her own story about addiction, she developed a passion to help others become aware of their relationship with these drug foods and now shows people the way to heal and recover from sugar addiction. Her mission is to spread knowledge about sugar addiction and to teach and train professionals how to screen, assess, evaluate and diagnose sugar addiction using the SUGAR tool she helped develop. Through this process, professionals can help individuals detox from their "drug foods" and find long-lasting recovery. Through her Facebook Group Sugarbomb in your brain, she has connected those struggling with Sugar Addiction and now over 8,000 members support each other through the daily struggles with sugar addiction AND celebrate the victories that come along with recovery. S1 Ep 20Episode 20: Dr. Robert Cywes
Dr. Robert Cywes specializes in Weight Management and Bariatric Surgery for adults and adolescents in West Palm Beach, Florida. He has been doing bariatric surgery for 18 years performing over 8000 surgeries. His medical training began in Cape Town, South Africa where he received his medical degree from The University of Cape Town. In 1989, Dr. Cywes moved to North America and completed a year-long residency in Pediatric Surgery at Ohio State University's Columbus Children's Hospital. Then he moved to Canada where he completed his general surgery residency and specialized in Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of Toronto. Also, Dr. Cywes earned a Ph.D. in Liver Carbohydrate Metabolism and the effect of glucose metabolism on liver transplant immunology. After completing his pediatric surgery fellowship at the University of Michigan's C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, Dr. Cywes was appointed as an Assistant Professor of Pediatric and Fetal Surgery at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee where he did hepatic stem cell research. During this time, Dr. Cywes became increasingly interested in adolescent obesity and the impact of the liver and metabolic syndrome on young patients. Dr. Cywes' research led to a comprehensive understanding of the toxicity of chronic excessive carbohydrate consumption as the primary cause of obesity and so-called obesity-related comorbidities. He became interested in developing a clinical program to treat obese patients using this knowledge. Dr. Cywes relocated to Jacksonville, Florida where he joined the Department of Pediatric Surgery at the Nemours Children's Clinic and Wolfson Children's Hospital. This led to a national meeting in Jacksonville where guidelines for adolescent obesity surgery were established. In 2004, Dr. Cywes established JSAPA to continue his work in both adolescent and adult obesity treatment and surgery, and in 2013 opened a practice in Palm Beach County, Florida. He now works with a highly experienced team of professionals from a variety of medical sub-specialties to better care for obese patients. He has developed the practice into an internationally recognized Center of Excellence for obesity surgery. The practice uses a cognitive behavioral therapy approach that addresses carbohydrate addiction and bariatric surgery to help patients manage their obesity long term. Based on his extensive clinical research and observations, Dr. Cywes lectures internationally regarding the physiological impact of carbohydrate consumption as the primary cause of the current Chronic Non-Communicable Disease (CNCDs) epidemic. He also lectures on the behavioral aspects of carbohydrate addiction as the cause of obesity and obesity-related co-morbidities and the use of substance abuse methodology, rather than a diet and exercise approach, to the effective long-term treatment of obesity. In today's episode we discuss: Why Dr. Cywes refers to this disease as CARB ADDICTION vs Food Addiction. Why people "fail" How parenting styles impact our relationship with substances and behaviors Dr. Cywes speaks to parents with children in the home How treatment goals are tailored to each patient How to use a "bridge" tool "Nobody needs surgery as an alternative to what we are doing" Why how much you eat in a day doesn't matter to Dr. Cywes The importance of restoring satiety How Carb Addiction Recovery is DIFFERENT from dieting Dr. Cywes talks about the pushback he has received What he would tell his younger self about Carb Addiction/Carb Addiction Recovery Follow Dr. Cywes: IG: @carbaddictiondoc and @carbaddictionmom YouTube: CarbAddictionDoc Text/WhatsApp: 561 517 0642 Website: https://obesityunderstood.com/ The content of our show is educational only.
