Ep 7676: Lisa Bronner on Organic Skincare, Activism & going Green
Everything you need to know about organic skincare and fair trade activism! Lisa Bronner, grand daughter of Dr. Bronner himself, shares with us her tips on picking the greenest, safest products for body and home, and tells us the unbelievable story of how Dr. Bronner's became a household name. Whenever asked about what she does, the first thing Lisa says is "I'm a mom." Her top priority is her family's physical, emotional and mental well-being. She began her blog, Going Green with a Bronner Mom, to give other busy moms quick, easy, honest information about organic and natural products and help them make informed decisions about their and their children's health. And she's well placed to do so, as the grand daughter of the founder of a well loved green living brand, Dr. Bronner's. Lisa's advice on how to make your life greener is simple: the first step is to educate yourself. Take the matter into your own hands. Read labels – whether it's food or a beauty product, see what's there. Do you recognize the ingredients, or would you need a chemistry degree to make sense of it? Lisa recommends visiting the Environmental Working Group website, which rates products according to safety and has a breakdown of ingredients including their potential effects. But you don't need to read the label if you're buying a bottle of D.r Bronner's soap, which contains only natural skin loving ingredients, and can be used for all kinds of cleaning tasks. The story of how Dr. Bronner's was founded could be made into a film – Emanuel Bronner grew up in a German soap making family in early 1900's. His philosophy, or Moral ABC, which focused around world peace, environment protection and the belief we are all one, caused his family to shun him, and compelled him to emigrate to the USA. There, he was wrongfully imprisoned in a mental institution for making impassioned speeches where he sought to promote the idea of an environmentally conscious, peaceful world. But he escaped and set up the Dr. Bronner's that has now become a household name. His philosophy for this better world can still be found today, written on the soap bottle labels. Dr. Bronner was a true visionary and his passion for creating a more ethical world lives on through the "Fighting Soap Company," as the family have lovingly nicknamed it. "It's part company and part activism," says Lisa, referring to the campaigns Dr. Bronner's has fought over the years. Where her grandfather's causes were fluoridation and world peace, now the company is active in raising awareness and creating positive change in the areas of GMO labelling, fairer trade and business practices, animal welfare and living wage reform. Click here to find out how Dr. Bronner's is making life better for both communities and the environment in Sri Lanka and Guana. We wish there were more companies like this! Dr. Bronner's story proves that you can do business well while being fair, ethical and responsible. Ep 7373: Joe Cross's new film, The Kids Menu PLUS how to reboot your body
Best known for his ground breaking film Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead, Joe healed his chronic urticaria (also known as chronic hives), and got off the pharmaceuticals thanks to juicing and a plant based diet. We caught up with Joe while he was in LA for the screening of his new documentary The Kids Menu! In The Kids Menu, Joe meets with experts, parents, teachers and kids, coming to the realization that childhood obesity isn't the real issue, but rather a symptom of a bigger problem. The lack of knowledge of what healthy foods are. Lack of access to healthy and affordable options. And the influence of negative role models, whether a parent, teacher or even a celebrity. All of this together seems to be a lot to overcome, but when empowered, kids often make the surprising choice of the healthier path. In this inspiring and hopeful documentary, we see amazing programs in action, inspiring individuals paving the way for change, but most of all — Kids, taking the lead in getting healthier options on their own menu. We first met Joe when we interviewed him for our film, Food Heals and his transformational story blew our minds! Joe used to be in financial trading, and while his career blossomed, his health deteriorated. His weight shot up to 320 pounds and he was taking a cocktail of medication to manage a variety of health issues including an autoimmune disease. One bite away from a heart attack, Joe decided to take matters in his own hands and make a drastic change, and film it! After 60 days of juicing and 90 days of eating only plant based foods, he was a new man. He knew his film, Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead would have a big impact – it's probably responsible for how trendy green juices are these days! Now, Joe has two businesses, a production company and Reboot with Joe, a community and website that helps people "reboot" their health." "We all know there's a problem," says Joe about the current state of our health. That's why The Kids Menu showcases what's possible with a healthy diet rather than focusing too much on the issues. Joe and his film crew went around the country looking for healthy initiatives, found the ones that were worth sharing – and the film was born! Without wanting to give too much away, one thing The Kids Menu shows how children can connect to the earth, and how positive that connection can be. Give a child the chance to experience food in a whole new way, from garden to plate, and they're hooked for life. "I like to think of a reboot as time travel," says Joe when we ask him about his health reboot tips. Where humans used to have periods of feast and famine, today we see mostly feasting. It's never been easier to access high calorie food, and at the same time it's never been easier to do nothing, with elevators and cars moving for us. Rebooting your health is a bit like going back in time to a period when feasting wasn't always possible. Without advising a period of famine or starvation, Joe is a convincing advocate of controlled juice fasting. When you juice, you extract the water from the cellulose of plants, water that is bursting with micronutrients, phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals that are essential to health. The first three days will be difficult, but if you break through something magical happens. Suddenly you'll have all this energy, you'll be calmer, your senses will be heightened, you'll be mentally clear, your joints will feel better. And you'll be giving your body a chance to heal. Joe's tips for a good reboot: get 75% of your juice from vegetables and 25% from fruit, make sure you drink plenty of water, and if you plan to juice for longer than 15 days, add some plant protein to your juices. But even without rebooting or fasting, simply adding fresh juice to your day can help your body to heal and your health to thrive. Ep 6969: Adam Sud on healing from depression, addiction and obesity naturally
EIn Part 2 of our interview with Adam Sud, we take a look at how he and his twin brother Bobby are making the world a healthier place through raising awareness of mental illness and challenging the stigmas associated with it. We also answer a listener question about holistic healing and coming off prescription meds. Three years ago, Adam weighed 300 pounds, was diabetic, suffered from depression, and was addicted to drugs and junk food. Since overcoming his addiction and healing his diabetes with a plant based vegan diet, Adam's life has completely changed for the better. When he noticed that his twin brother Bobby was in the same position he had been in previously, he reached out. A few months ago, he suggested Bobby move in, and follow the same diet and exercise regime Adam was on. Bobby accepted, and has been following Adam's health routine for about a month in a half. Even in such a short time, the results are astounding: Bobby has lost 20 pounds, balanced his blood sugar levels and improved his blood pressure. There have been challenges—change isn't easy—but Bobby already feels happier and healthier and says looking at it as his very own "hero's journey" helps to keep him motivated. Adam and Bobby want to make the world a healthier place and challenge the stigma that surrounds mental health. "People need to recover out loud. We need to remove the shame around addiction" says Adam. They will be taking part in the Ice Breaker Run—an event that aims to break the ice around talking about mental illness. The run will be 3100 miles long, spanning from Los Angeles to Washington DC and its end will kick off Mental Health Awareness Week. You can follow their progress through their website and look out for their podcast! We also answer a question from one of our listeners, who is in the process of changing her lifestyle and wants to know how she can heal herself naturally and holistically, and the best way to come off prescription medication for depression and ADD. Thank you for reaching out! We always advocate talking to a doctor about coming off medications and doing so gradually. There are many things you can do to get your brain balanced, such as positive thinking and giving your brain proper nutrients. Ep 6868: Overcoming Adderall addiction, losing weight and finding peace with Adam Sud
EIn today's moving episode, Adam Sud tells us how he overcame his addiction of prescription drugs and junk food, lost 100 pounds, regained his self esteem and turned his life around with a whole food, plant based vegan diet. Prescription drug misuse kills over 300,000 Americans every year. Adam Sud very nearly became part of that statistic, but he managed to turn his life around. He shares his inspirational story with us today. Adam comes from a home where healthy living was encouraged. When his grandfather passed away from cancer, his father, founder of Whole Foods Market, became focused on health and wellness, running marathons and encouraging his family to eat nutritious food. Consequently, Adam wondered whether there was something wrong with him for liking junk foods, and by the time he was in high school, he'd rebelled and begun to reject the healthy lifestyle promoted at home. In middle school he was prescribed the ADHD medication Adderall, which he began to overuse, enjoying the feeling of focused attention and the fact the drug helped him manage his weight. But Adderall is one molecule away from being street meth, and soon Adam found himself increasingly craving the drug. By the time he was in college, his metabolism was seriously damaged and he began gaining weight. It wasn't until Adam left college than things really took a turn for the worse. He was taking six times the recommended amount of Adderall each day, and when he couldn't get hold of it he would self-sooth with junk food. His self image was at an all time low, he had no self esteem. Nothing mattered except the drug. He lost his job, his life retreated into his apartment, he didn't go out with his friends and his relationship with his family was strained. But his father kept reaching out to him and one day Adam realized he had to do something. He started rehab in September 2012. "The physical exam was dehumanizing", Adam remembers as he thinks back to being 300 pounds and seriously overweight. The test results were frightening: he had high blood pressure, and his blood sugar levels were through the roof. It was the diabetes diagnosis that hit Adam the hardest, and what propelled him to making the lifestyle changes needed to fully recover. He started working with the personal trainer immediately. "If I'm the cause of my problems, I get to be the solution," and, 37 days later, he moved into Sober Living. This was another challenge, as the food on offer was "worse than hospital food", frosted flakes and microwaveable pizzas—indeed most people gain weight in Sober Living. But that wasn't the case for Adam. He started a diet consisting of oatmeal and egg whites, and as many steamed vegetables as he could handle — this was an act of self love and care, and the diet helped reaffirm his sobriety. After two months, he'd lost 30 pounds, and with the therapy he was receiving, was able to start liking the person he saw in the mirror. Adam also reversed his diabetes. He moved out of Sober Living eight months later, weighing nearly 100 pounds less. Now, Adam has been a vegan for around two years, and is planning to run the New York Marathon with his father. He's certified as a Holistic Health Coach, and has gone from hating himself to being the healthiest and happiest he's ever been — and if that's not a story worth listening to, nothing is! She founded the Kasem Cares Foundation to establish and fight for the rights to have visitation and reasonable access to an ailing parent, especially when under the care and control of an uncooperative spouse or sibling. Today's #TBT episode features an excerpt from our interview with Kerri for the Food Heals documentary.
