Five Clubs

The boys from The Wagyu Filet Show, Johnson Wagner and Brendon de Jonge joined Gary Williams in studio. They dove into a number of topics including the FedEx playoffs, the Ryder Cup and some of their stories of the year from surprises, breakthroughs and disappointments. 

Writers Gabby Herzig and Claire Rogers joined the show today. Host Gary Williams started the show by discussing Cam Young and his breakthrough win at the Wyndham and all the movement in the standings as well as a look at this year’s major winners on the men’s and women’s side. Herzig and Rogers discussed Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIroy, the Ryder Cup, their most underappreciated stories of the year and their road trip through Ireland and the U.K. after The Open.

Ian Baker-Finch joined the program as he prepares for is final TV broadcast after 19 years with CBS. An Open winner and now a staple in the broadcast world, Baker-Finch discussed his transition from player to broadcaster, best advice he got, Adam Scott winning The Masters and what that meant for the Aussies, the team around him at CBS and how he loves calling up places and they welcome him to come play with open arms. Host Gary Williams closed the show with the golf dogs of the week and the team picks for the Wyndham Championship and the AIG Women's Open.

Emerging PGA star Chris Gotterup and Sports Business Journal writer Josh Carpenter joined the show today. Gotterup talked about the start of his season and how better course management has led to his rise and win at the Scottish Open, how the pairing with Rory McIlroy on Sunday made him lock-in and how that win changed his season by qualifying for The Open, where he finished 3rd, and touched a bit on knowing he is at least now part of the Ryder Cup conversation. Carpenter talked about what will be priority for Brian Rolapp, the LIV TV situation, the business side of the upcoming Ryder Cup and more.

Gary Williams went through the weekend that was in golf from the 3M, the Senior Open and the U.S. AM and was joined by Grant Boone who dove into the women's game and the early success of Lottie Woad and what is making her so successful. Williams also talked about the continued emergence of Chris Gotterup and what that means for the remainder of the season.

Today's show started with a look at the U.S. Junior AM and all the names of players who have famous and notable golf fathers including the names Woods, Kuchar and Byrd and the hope that there is joy versus burden in carrying that same name. Bob Harig on Sports Illustrated also joined the program to talk about the evolution of Scottie Scheffler as a media voice, where things stand with Rory McIlroy going forward, the potential lost voice of Phil Mickelson and the new voice of the PGA TOUR, Brian Rolapp. We ended the show and the week with our golf dogs of the week and team picks for the 3M Open.

The Ryder Cup conversation will start to heat up as we head towards the FedEx Playoff and Brendon de Jonge joined Gary Williams in studio to talk about the which players from both sides are going to likely head to Bethpage Black. De Jonge was on-site at Royal Portrush and gave some first-person accounts of what he saw from Scottie Scheffler, Harris English, Chris Gotterup and others.

Scottie Scheffler again showed why he is the word's top-ranked golfer after capturing The Claret Jug as Champion Golfer of the Year at The Open. Host Gary Williams dove into an incredible week for Scheffler and what is separating him from the field. Sky Sports' David Howell also joined the program to talk about The Open, Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and the looming Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.

We had a full guest list today for our Open Preview Show on Golf Channel and were joined by Rich Lerner, Brandel Chamblee, Billy Horschel, Tommy Roy and Stephen Watson. Horschel provided a player perspective on what it takes to get into the hunt and the conditions that alter play. Lerner and Chamblee gave some historical perspective to the event while weighing in on some of the top story lines. Roy discussed the event from the television perspective and what the audience will see. And Watson talked about the local Irish angle including what it would mean for Rory McIlroy to win the Claret Jug at Royal Portrush.

The 153rd Open will be held at Royal Portrush and the 5 Clubs crew takes a deep dive into this year’s tournament. Gary Williams, Johnson Wagner, Brendon de Jonge and Taylor Zarzour all weigh in on the top story lines heading in, the return of Rory McIlroy to where he grew up, the favorites, the longshots and what they expect to unfold in the last major of the 2025 season.

The 2025 Open Championship will kick off July 17 at Royal Portrush and in this wagering preview show, 5 Clubs and Read The Line partnered up to give viewers an in-depth look at the 153rd Open. 5 Clubs host Gary Williams, Read The Line's wagering expert and PGA professional Keith Stewart, and 5 Clubs contributors and former PGA TOUR players Johnson Wagner and Brendon de Jonge hit on a number of key topics as you look to prepare for how to "bet" The Open.The group discussed some of the basics from course examination, player characteristics, analytics, players in form, past history, and dove into some of the more detailed particulars on how to find value, when to bet certain odds and how to bet World #1 Scottie Scheffler.This show is intended to arm you with what you need to do the most important thing - WIN money.

Lee Westwood and Trevor Immelman joined the program this morning. Westwood recently qualified for this year’s Open at Royal Portrush and Immelman is the lead analyst in the booth for CBS Sports.

U.S. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley headlined a packed show today that also included Johnson Wagner, Brendon de Jonge, Taylor Zarzour and Keith Stewart.

Bilas will participate in the American Century Championship this weekend and talked about what he loves about that event. Bilas, with a law background, also talked about the PGA TOUR and LIV discussions and how the collegiate landscape in changing with NIL, anti-trust, transfer portals and more. And finally, Bilas talked about what it is that draws him to the game of golf.

This 5Clubs conversation is one that happens somewhere, every day in grill rooms and on golf courses all over the world. Tiger or Jack? Hogan of Jones?  Author Michael Arkush took on the task of constructing a list of the top 100 players all time, meaning ALL time golf and not just men but women as well. This conversation examines the challenges and parameters of compiling a top 100 but it extends beyond the book to include where Scottie Scheffler would be right now and which other players currently competing will eventually be in the top 100. We all love debates on lists, here’s a top 100 all-time golf discussion rooted in Michael’s new book.

Andrew Novak and Henni Zuel joined the program this morning. Novak, who is having a career year, talked about how he has had to grow into every level of golf to get comfortable and feel like he can belong. He also talked about how motivating it is to know he is part of the Ryder Cup conversation. Zuel, part of the Sky Sports broadcast team, joined to talk about the recent qualifiers for The Open including Lee Westwood. The show ended with dogs of the week and team picks for the John Deere Classic.

Brendan Porath, head of content at The Fried Egg, joined Gary Williams to talk about a number of topics in the game from the ever-evolving schedule, the need to have more overseas events, the way the season seems to end with a whimper, what the new PGA TOUR CEO will prioritize, whether Rory McIlroy has anything left this year that can top his April and the inevitability of Keegan Bradley as a Ryder Cup USA playing captain.

Sean Zak of Golf Magazine joined the program today to cover a number of topics in the game from best story from the Majors this year, the Keegan Bradley playing captain debate for the Ryder Cup and expectations and thoughts on the new head of the PGA TOUR, Brian Rolapp. Host Gary Williams recapped the weekend that was in golf and dove into Nebraska golf highlighting Sand Hills, CapRock Ranch and Landmand.

Nathan Smith, the U.S. Walker Cup captain, and Brad Faxon joined 5 Clubs on Golf Channel. Faxon led off the show talking about The Broadmoor, the host site of the U.S. Senior Open and how the players will need to adjust to the altitude in what Faxon thinks is the biggest event on the Champions Tour. Faxon also talked about Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. Smith discussed how good the new generation is with the depth at the collegiate and junior levels. He talked about Ben James, Jackson Koivin and Michael LaSasso as members of this year’s team that will compete at Cypress Point.

John Wood and Tyler Rae joined the program today. Wood, the team manager for the U.S. Ryder Cup team talked about the process leading into the selection of the team and all the details that need to be addressed. He talked at length about how captain Keegan Bradley has played his way into contention and how that may unfold if he makes the team and how many guys are realistically on the roster of candidates. Rae and his team will get straight to work starting Sunday night renovating Detroit Golf Club, home of the Rocket Mortgage Classic. He discussed how his team wanted to tell a story to the membership and bring back the greatest version of the club and the gifts of Donald Ross to game as it relates to putting surfaces.

Kevin Clark joined the program and talked about his relationship with the new PGA TOUR CEO Brian Rolapp and what he knows about him and the career advice he gave him years ago and what that means about how he thinks. Host Gary Williams also talked about how the Traveler’s Championship unfolded with Keegan Bradley winning and Tommy Fleetwood letting one get away and what that now means for Bradley as captain of the U.S. Ryder Cup team.

Mel Reid and Gabby Herzig joined the program this morning. Reid will be covering the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship this week and she shared her thoughts on the ladies next major. Herzig joined to share her thoughts on the announcement of the PGA TOUR’s new CEO, Brian Rolapp, and what that means moving forward. And we unveiled the latest installment of the golf dogs of the week.

This was a newsworthy show as the PGA TOUR announced a new CEO, Brian Rolapp. We were also joined by Justin Tupper who is documenting the story of the Cobbs Creek project outside Philadelphia and Brendon de Jonge stopped by the studio with some final thoughts from the U.S. Open and on the Tour’s new CEO.

Gary Williams recapped the 125th U.S. Open from Oakmont Country Club. J.J. Spaun birdied 17 and 18 to win his first major and outlast the field and finished as the only player in the field to post a final overall score under par. We also discussed the tournaments had by Scheffler, Burns,Scott, McIlroy and more.

We were live from Oakmont Country Club, site of the 125th U.S. Open and joined by John Bodenhamer of the USGA, Bob Ford, Gil Hanse, Andy Johnson & Brendan Porath of Fried Egg, Gabby Herzig and Mason Howell. 

We were live from Congaree Golf Club, site of the 2025 Arnold Palmer Cup, which begins on Thursday. We were joined by Palmer's grandson, Sam Saunders, as well as the Friedkin Group's Director of Golf Bruce Davidson, Brandel Chamblee, Eamon Lynch, Paul McGinley and Palmer Cup participants Michael LaSasso and Louise Rydqvist. Discussion centered around the Palmer Cup and the ways it makes an impact, the integration of men and women in the competition itself and the initiative's of the Friedkin Group and Congaree and the Global Golf Initiative.

We were joined today by Grant Haefner and Taylor Zarzour. Haefner made it through the 36-hole qualifying on Monday earning Medalist honors at Springfield Country Club. He talked about the day, his journey and what’s ahead as he heads to Oakmont for the U.S. Open. Zarzour joined in studio and he and host Gary Williams recapped golf’s longest day before diving into the last month of Scottie Scheffler and how we’ll see how Rory McIlroy responds with the next major just over a week away.

It was a busy show with Gary Williams providing a recap of the U.S. Women's Open at Erin Hills and The Memorial and Jack's place and were joined by Ryan French, the man behind Monday Q Info. Williams and French also broke down golf's longest day as golfers from 10 different sites will battle it out over the course of a 36-hole day to qualify for the U.S. Open at Oakmont. French shares the unknown stories better than anyone and today is a day that provides a lot of them.

Michael Bamberger has been covering the game of golf for four decades. The GAME. He has always been curious and determined to tell all the stories and not just those about the best professional golfers. The Playing Lesson is classic Bamberger as he spends a year immersed in every aspect of the game of golf from caddying in pro ams, to playing in pro ams, to being involved in volunteer services at tour events, to putting lessons with Brad Faxon. Of course, Michael shares conversations with some of the most interesting people in golf. Michael is one of the game’s great writers and this lengthy conversation with Gary Williams veers in so many directions. Not surprisingly, two people who love the game talking about why it does to us what it does to us. This new book is for lovers of the whole game and this conversation tries to cover it all.

As we mark one year since the passing of PGA Tour winner Grayson Murray, Gary is joined by a man who entered Grayson's life at a very young age and became one of the most important people in his life. LPGA Hall of Famer Lydia Ko and golf personality Will Lowery joined the program today. Among the topics discussed, Ko talked about her Olympic experience and golf’s role in the Games moving forward as well as her emotional win that followed at St. Andrews. Lowery talked a lot about the growth of junior golf in recent years and in particular his work with Steph Curry’s Underrated Golf Tour, the impact the tour makes and the opportunities and access it provides for those from a different club house.

Johnson Wagner and Brendon de Jonge joined the program to recap the 2025 PGA Championship with Gary Williams. They dove into Scottie Scheffler and his greatness, Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, the driver testing and a peek ahead to the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club.

Golf writers Ron Green Jr. and Michael Bamberger joined the program this morning to talk about the major story lines coming out of the 2025 PGA Championship. Both talked about what makes Scottie Scheffler so great and that it would not surprise Bamberger to see Scheffler pull off the career grand slam by year’s end. Between the two they also talked about how nice it was to have Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau in contention to give some buzz to the leaderboard.

Don Rea Jr. & Justin Ray joined the program this morning. Ray is known as a golf stat and information guru and he shared some mind-boggling stats on Rory McIlroy at Quail Hollow, Tiger Woods against the field, Jack Nicklaus in the 70’s and a number of other stats for the game’s best. Among other things, Rea talked about the PGA Works collegiate event going on in Whistling Straits and how many people are still finding golf in non-traditional ways and enjoying the sport. We also shared our picks for the Truist Championship and the dogs of the week.

Broadcasters Frank Nobilo and Chris “Mad Dog” Russo joined the program this morning. Russo recapped what it was like watching Rory McIlroy win The Masters and how his audience reacted for days after. He talked about how often he talks golf and why to his general sports audience and the stories he needs to sell his passion for it. Nobilo also weighed in on the ups and downs to McIlroy’s win at Augusta and talked about what is prime age now in the professional game and how we got there.

NBC broadcaster Mike Tirico and Tom Coyne, founder of the Golfer's Journal, joined the program this morning. Coyne was up first and talked about some of the bigger stories in golf so far this year, gave a low down on Philadelphia Cricket Club where this week's PGA TOUR event will be held for the Truist Championship, some history of Philadelphia golf and an update on Sullivan County Golf Club. Tirico also dove into golf's biggest stories of the year, looked for some historical comparisons to Rory McIlroy's win at The Masters, spoke to the big three of McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau all being in form headed to the PGA Championship and reflected on some iconic sports calls.Host Gary Williams opened the show on rivalries in golf and how rare they actually play out on significant Sunday's and the big weekend for Scheffler at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson.

Newly-appointed Presidents Cup captain Brandt Snedeker and writer Michael Bamberger joined the program today. Snedeker talked about the task that lies ahead, the traits he will look for in team selections, making sure the team knows the plan in advance and how Keegan Bradley still playing to earn a spot on the Ryder Cup team could factor into this year's team competition. Bamberger talked about how he didn't think that Rory McIlroy was necessarily going to go on a tear now, how to compare eras pre- and post-big headed drivers, the freedom of Bryson DeChambeau, and shared thoughts on the upcoming Truist Championship coming to Philadelphia Cricket Club.Host Gary Williams also reviewed the Dogs of the Week and revealed the team picks for the CJ Cup Byron Nelson.

Wagner will be re-creating a number of these iconic shots for Golf Channel and there are plenty to choose from. Shots at Pebble Beach, the Canadian Open, Torrey Pines, St. Andrews, Muirfield, Hazeltine, Firestone, The Memorial and of course, Augusta National.

We had a full house in-studio with Johnson Wagner, Brendon de Jonge & Taylor Zarzour and the group dove into a lot of topics including: what does post-Master win Rory McIlroy look like, is Scottie Scheffler ready to win again soon, who might have a second half the season to counter Rory like Schauffele had with Scheffler in 2024, who might some of the rookies be making their first U.S. Ryder Cup team, the depth of the European team and the route chose by Blades Brown.

We were joined by Steve Wheatcroft and Gabby Herzig for today show. Wheatcroft, the former PGA TOUR player, is now one year sober and has found new purpose with the Mulligan Foundation. He talked about the Mulligan Foundation and the impact they are making. Herzig talked about what was next for Rory McIlroy after his Masters win and dove into Jordan Spieth as he continues to make his way back from injury.

It was a busy show to close the week with our updated Club 5 standings, team picks for the Zurich Classic and Chevron Championship and of course the golf "Dogs of the Week". Gary Williams also talked about the state of the women's professional game and the sponsors involved before being joined by the Hojgaard twins Nicolai and Rasmus as well as Golf Channel commentator Tom Abbott. The Rasmus twins talked about their parents allowing them to be different growing up but that they chose similar paths, how hard it was at times to enjoy the success of the other, their Master's experiences this year and what they like about the format for the Zurich Classic with alt shot on the final day. Tom Abbott talked about the Chevron Championship and the women's professional game and how important Lydia Ko is and has been over her career.

Cole Hammer joined the program this morning for his second visit to continue discussing his professional journey. Since he was last on the program he had a 54-hole lead on the Korn Ferry Tour and he dove into how that experience was in retrospect and how he was and wasn't prepared for the moment. Hammer also touched on his coach Bruce Davidson, the use of range finders, and talked about the journey of Rory McIlroy as was on the range with him as a 15-year old at Chambers Bay for the U.S. Open. We were also joined in studio by Preston Cole, Quail Hollow Club Pro, as he embarks to qualify for the 2025 PGA Championship that will be hosted by his home club in Charlotte. He talked about the experience qualifying at Valhalla last year and the support he has from everyone at the club to try to do it again this year.

We were joined today by designer Rob Collins of King Collins Dormer Golf and Tom Pashley, President of Pinehurst Resort. Collins and his team are behind the design and Landman, a course in Homer, NE that has quickly become a go-to destination for the traveling golf afficiando. He talked about how it came about, its uniqueness and the surrounding area. Pashley announced that Pinehurst No. 11, to be designed by Coore Crenshaw, will be completed by Fall of 2027 and talked about how different it will be from its newly-opened and highly-acclaimed neighbor, Pinehurst No . 10.Gary Williams opened the show with Justin Thomas' win at the RBC Heritage and closed with the heartbreak for Joel Dahmen in Punta Cana and the very sad news on the passing of Jay Sigel.
