Ep. 247. News: Who should we trust?

In this episode the team sit down with top fintech CEOs to tackle the week's top financial news Kicking off with the news that in the ten year anniversary of the financial crisis, Brits still don't trust their banks to act in the interests of society. We explore what this means, whether banks have ever acted in the interests of society and if this really is the case? We asked some people on the streets around our offices to see if they agree. Find out what they said. Big banks have had it tough in this week's headlines - TSB have had another outage in the exact week the FCA have mandated banks to declare their outages, and the Telegraph reveals the slightly underhand dealings with savers' rates, in the days and weeks before the Bank of England's interest rate rise. We spoke to Dominic Lindley Director of Policy, New City Agenda (and a member of the Financial Services Consumer Panel) to get his take on this, and to summarise all the big bank bad news stories we’ve just covered. Amazon have announced their desire to become a price comparison site, sending their competitors' share prices tumbling, we also got some great insight from Oliver Ralph, Insurance Correspondent at the FT on this one. The team also examine: Revolut's customers getting locked out of their accounts in an attempt to crack down on money laundering; JP Morgan's new investment app which is aimed at millennials and first time investors and offers free trades and the big fintech valuations of the week, which predict Monzo will become the next fintech unicorn in Europe. Ep. 244. Interviews: Tom Peters - The Excellence Dividend

Tom Peters is co-author of In Search of Excellence, a book that's often touted as the best business book there is. Nearly 30 years later and with 16 more books under his belt, Tom Peters is still leading the management guru industry he created. Sam Maule talks to him about everything that influenced his life and led up to the moment Peters wrote In Search of Excellence. Emphasising the need for innovation, transparency, honesty, empowerment, openness (all the traits 11:FS stands for) Tom Peters isn't afraid to call out bullshit where he sees it. Although, Tom is just as capable of going off-topic as Sam. This is a chat between two guys who love their jobs, love their careers, and reflect on both well enough to know how they got where they are today. There's a lot of expertise required to know hot to make things better. Tom Peters has led a career that's let him write in great detail what it means to derive the best results from a project. That stems from understanding the things that prevent everyone from delivering. And if you pay him well enough, he'll even tell you politely. Tom Peters makes a living from telling CEO they are doing everything wrong and they love him for it. Ep. 238. Insights: Debunking the myth of AI

AI is a massive subject that's been so spun out by marketing, consultancies, and project proposals as a cure all that it's become difficult to understand what it actually is. To start things off we define what AI really is so you know your AI fact from fiction, then we move on to how AI has developed from simple 'if and then' statements into the powerful applications of Machine Learning. We also take a look at where AI is being applied in complex use cases and how skeptical experts are about AIs ability to make you money. Ep. 236. Interviews: Howard Lindzon - the Angel investor

Some people think it's lucky to be able to make decisions, but Howard Lindzon doesn't see things that way. It's about practice, not being paralysed by indecision and limiting your options to two positive outcomes and then picking the one that you're able to live with. You've gotta keep moving forward and to keep everyone around you motivated and wanting to move forward. CEOs are vital to the nature of a startup, they need to be able to pull their company in the direction they want to grow in as fast as they can and keep everyone who's with them excited and interested. Sam and Howard also discuss how not everyone can be a great CEO but that isn't a bad thing. The world needs great second-in-commands and people all down the hierarchy, without them there'd be no companies. Being a CEO means being a great recruiter and communicator in addition to raising money. You can't just be good at one of them, all three are vital to being a CEO. It's important to ensure staff know what you need them to be doing, when, and most importantly, why. Angel investors are focused on creating the best possible team for the company, finding the specialists who are capable of operating in the space like a scalpel because they know what they're good at, how to do it, and are solely focused on getting their tasks done. And most importantly, trusting the others to achieve what they need to do too. We hope you enjoyed the show! Ep. 234. Insights: Legacy to Cloud

COBOL is a programming language that was ubiquitous to the programming world around 60 years ago. It's since been replaced by newer and more useful languages. Unfortunately, COBOL still underpins a great deal of the banking technology in the world, but no-one's trained in it. This has left to a rise in the number of 60-80 year olds who have come out of retirement to maintain the modern banking world. Cowboys who can do what they want because they're the ones maintaining current banking technology. We take a look at what happened to lead us to this point and interview Ewan Silver, CTO of 11:FS to shed some light on the issue. Next up we interview Scott Seely, Principal Solutions Architect at Microsoft. He runs us through the complex process of untangling legacy systems to work with new technology and hopefully escape the COBOL cowboys. People are the main sticking point here, so Microsoft have come up with an ingenious solution to enable the financial industry to work with legacy systems while still engaging with the most modern technology and making APIs a much smaller sticking point by extending legacy systems out to them. We also take a look at the AI problem. It's no secret that the industry has been going wrong with AI for a while now, using it in meetings to get budgets approved or used as a distance promise of results when numbers are flagging. We examine where the industry is making mistakes with AI. This episode was written by Ollie Judge. Produced by Petrit Berisha & Laura Watkins. Edited by Holly Blaxill and hosted by Simon Taylor. David Simon and Sam are live on the main stage at Money 20/20 covering the latest and greatest in news across the fintech world. Joined by those at the cutting edge of all things fintech, Leda Glyptis, Rob Frohwein, Anna Irrera and Peter Hazou. It's a different show from usual with our guests coming on in pairs. First up are Leda and Rob to share their views on what's going on in Europe. Kicking things off, European payments seemingly ground to a halt when Visa suffered a system failure over the past week. The panel have an interesting take on the issue, it is a payments conference after all. Next up, Kabbage competes with PayPal. Luckily we have the Kabbage CEO on-hand to give us some absolute insight into what's going on there. Finishing up this section, the panel discuss the (un)surprising revelation that Millennials trust tech companies over banks when it comes to personal data. Our two lovely guests have to leave us but we have two equally brilliant ones in the form of Sara and Jeff, ready to let us know their take on the latest blockchain news. It's been a weird one for blockchain with the world's largest shipping firm, Maersk, now tracking cargo using blockchain. Maersk is planning to use the technology to fight fraud and reduce paperwork. Next up we have two of the finest fintech minds in the form of Anna Irrera and Peter Hazou to round up the last of the big news stories in fintech this week. Starling has flown the nest after receiving £80M in funding and splitting from Transferwise, the general thinking is the capital increase is to bid for a share of the Capability and Innovation fund set up by RBS following the banking crisis. Next the panel talk about customer service. Surveys show that UK digital challengers are beating high-street banks on customer satisfaction. Although apparently high-street banks are doing a few things better. We also take a look at Citi and just why they're crushing the competition in investment in US fintech. Ep. 220. Fintech Insider Insights: Dirty Data

Did you know that you have a digital twin? Someone is the data version of yourself that lives and breathes the internet. The problem, in this digital world, is that Digital You leaves a digital footprint everywhere you go. Everywhere... Every app and tab you open, every T-shirt you buy online, every social media account you create, all leave a trail of data behind you. Now you might not think this is important, but have you ever wondered how it's being used. Why are companies like Facebook and Google gathering data about Digital You? Why is it so profitable for them? And if there's so much value at stake....why are we not offered anything in return for it? This is where GDPR steps in. It's power to the people: digital-style. Your inbox may have been flooded by a mixture of panicky, scary and funny emails asking you to read through some updated T's & C's for seemingly everything you've ever signed up to. They may reference something called GDPR, but what is this? How does it help us, the consumer, squeeze more value out of the apps and digital services we use? Ryan and Petrit take us on a data-filled journey, with a series of stories, as well insights from industry experts weaved in to make sure you don't get bored of their voices.
