This week's guest is an exceptional storyteller - Dr. Kelly Flanagan. This father-to-three shares how he's rebelling against the dichotomy of providing for your family while pursuing your passions. How many men out there are not responding to a call that they have felt for a while out of fear? He has the desire to teach men that carrying the burden of providing for their family does not have to come at the expense of that other thing they're interested in. Dr. Kelly shares how this showed up in his own writing career and talks about his new book, The Unhiding of Elijah Campbell. We dive into the idea of giving a voice to the younger version of ourselves and how we've outgrown playing as adults. We talk about marriage as being an adventure as a battle to fight for. It can sometimes show up as the ego's desire to win the battle - even if it is against our wives. This battle should be seen as an opportunity to fight alongside our wives and not just letting our ego win. This can force our wives to show up in the masculine form to protect her heart. Men, we are to provide and protect our wives. Look back at your week and see if there were places you needed to show up more in this area. This week's conversation with Yves Bright, actor, pro surfer, and photographer, is full of wisdom from a dad who confidently knows the focus that he's placed on being a father now will have an impact for generations to come. We discuss the idea of trying to control our kids. He shares the realization of how it's more important to relinquish that control in the name of growth and raising independent young adults. He reminds us how vital it is to foster an environment where our children can think for themselves. He talks about how Surfline helped him as a new dad and a reminder to not lose our identity and passions as fathers. Our children are our priority but it is important to remember that we have our own identity as a father too. Yves shares how he's rebelling against the stress of our world and is striving to create an environment without fear and stress. He's creating freedom for his children by encouraging them to think for themselves as we can all so easily lose our individuality by falling into the need to belong. When talking about raising teens, he shares his realization that they are going to learn one way or another - from us parents or from their friends, social media, etc. Don't relinquish the opportunity to teach your kids about the important stuff to outside sources. I'm so stoked on this episode with comedian, surfer, father, and rad human - Jonathan Wayne Freeman. We talk fear, comfort, laughter, tacos, and booze. We discuss how he broke away from the 9-5 to follow his dreams and find more happiness by working for himself. He shares how to combat fear and make big steps to change the betterment of your family despite what our current culture pushes upon us. He shares how sobriety has shifted his perspective on everything - how it has impacted his home and raising his kids. I love that he shared how partying for decades led to a realization of how damaging this selfishness could be and how it shifted his perspective on what it means to be a man.
