While we take precautionary measures this hazy season (again), many of us wonder - is this going to be an annual event none of us signed up for? And if so, why are we putting up with it?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Special Education Needs - Buddy Club Programme
Malaysia has recently paid more attention to special needs education, as highlighted in Chapter 4 - Student Learning, in the recent 2013 - 2015 Malaysia Education Blueprint. With a staggering 400,000 Malaysians considered disabled or having special needs, recent statistics show that up to 95% of them are unemployed, possibly contributing to the country’s GDP loss of RM92 billion per annum. Yet, awareness and education amongst Malaysians about the hardship faced by the disabled community remain low, causing discrimination within our society, be it at schools or offices. The government has since started engaging other ministries and NGOs to help in identifying pertinent issues faced by the community and are looking at implementing these initiatives.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Talkback Thursday: Is this burgeoning demand for international schools a reaction against the standards of the Malaysian public education system?
The government has been encouraging the growth of international schools in Malaysia, which have been increasing each year. Education, one of the National Key Economic Areas under the Economic Transfer Programme, has listed scaling of international schools as one of its Entry Point Projects. To date there are 91 international schools currently in operation, with a marked increase of students over the years and it is estimated that by 2020, it will help contribute to a GNI of RM2.6 billion. While the support has been great, and the benefits rewarding, where does that leave the majority of Malaysian students whose only option is our public school? With about 10,000 public schools throughout the country, will we see these schools’ syllabus and curriculum come close to the standard of international schools? How much is being done to support the current public schools’ education system?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
